I've been here many times sit in and takeaway. Food always good. Service friendly and helpful. The chicken is always tender, fresh spices used and prices very reasonable. This place is so good it would do well in Glasgow, and are a great asset to the seaside town of Stranraer. Well done for keeping standards so consistently high.

. . Staying in Stranraer for one night we found this curry house and decided to give it a go. Although for a Saturday night it was quiet which was a little concerning, once the food came I cannot understand why. As an Indian cuisine enthusiast I have experienced many flavours throughout the UK and this restaurant ranks right up there with the best of them. The freshness and flavours were excellent and the staff attentive and very pleasant. Be sure to give this place a go, you will not be disappointed

There were two other families in at the time we called in. Staff were welcoming and helpful. We had the buffet meal. Not a huge choice we felt. Starters were reasonable but not brilliant. Naan bread was renewed and was very nice. Mains of chicken tikka masala, bhoona and lamb jalfrezi were really good. Meat very tender and plenty of sauce. My wife enjoyed the lamb jalfrezi in particular although it was too spicy for my palate, but then I don't like very spicy anyway! Rice was fragrant and well cooked.Staff were attentive and checked several times that we were happy. When the fresh naan arrived, the waitress brought it straight to the table and offered us some.We have been once before. We don't live locally but felt it was worth a return visit. There was no pressure or over-bearing staff which just puts me right off!Traditional music was good. Not a big place but clean and presentable.Takeaway seemed to be steady business.Surprised at some of the other comments about the place. Think we found the improved service which will hopefully continue.

This restaurant is now called the Stranraer Tandoori and has changed management recently. I called in there just after five on a Saturday evening and found it empty - probably I was there too early. I found the staff friendly and helpful and the decor simple but attractive and there was appropriate Indian music playing, which I always like. Who wants western music with an eastern meal?I only wanted a main and chose a chicken Palak, which was described on the menu as being made with spinach and fairly spicy, along with pilau rice. The dish was well cooked and tasty, though not perhaps quite as spicy as I had expected. However, there were plenty of flavours and it did leave a pleasant spicy aftertaste.Service was quick and the cost of the meal very reasonable. I'd certainly go back.

The menu was extensive and the food we ordered was well up to the standard of any similar meal we've had elsewhere. They even made us a Raita even though it wasn't on the menu and it was delicious! Enjoyed my chat with the owners about places we both knew in India and highlight of the evening was seeing the indoor Koi Carp pond and look forward to seeing it when its refurbished. This was my first visit to Stranraer on my way to Ireland, my friends and I had the Taj Maha Tandoori highly recommended, we were a bit sceptical but being the only curry restaurant in the town we were somewhat limited in our choice. However, what a great choice, the restaurant sits on its own on the London Road a short climb up the steps at the front and once inside we were made welcome by the suit clad manager and made feel very welcome. On the evening we visited there was an all you can eat buffet, now it must be said I'm not a fan of these "all you can eat" affairs I find the food inferior I like my food to be freshly cooked and not kept warm in pans, but in this occasion I was pleasantly surprised the food was hot and spicy and nicly presented, my friends who are curry aficionados were impressed. The staff were very friendly and professional and were willing to put up with our "hail fellow well met bonhomie" with good humour all our requests for more drinks and food were greeted with a smile and brought to our table quickly. For anyone visting Stranraer and looking for a good curry Tej Maha Tandoori is worth a visit.

Me and 3 golf buddies made the journey to Stranraer last Sunday night. All of us coming from Glasgow we are used to Indian food of the highest quality. Unfortunately the standard of the food in the taj maha is very short of the standard I was looking for. I decided against the buffet and opted for a lamb boohna. The lamb was delicious, well cooked and tender, but the boohna sauce was watery and lacking any flavour at all and totally spoiled the dish. The starters of chicken pakora and veg pakora were ok but 5 pieces of the chicken and 4 of the pakora...come on guys.Cokes were watered down heavily as was the fresh orange and lemonade which we ordered to replace the Coke. Not impressed at all guys.

Its now called Stranraer Tandoori, and its a completely different owner, Chef's and waitressing team are all new too... so to all extents and purposes a new business.I have eaten here a few times now over the last 8 months or so, and ordered takeaway too.The restaurant seems to be getting busier especially at the weekends, and the phone is quite often engaged at peak times which is also a good sign of an upturn in business. My party of 4 were very well looked after from the moment we arrived, and the timing of each course was spot on.Waitresses were very attentive but discrete, which we really liked.Didn't ask every 5 minutes if everything was okay etc.The food is phenomenal for the price, the flavours are spot on every time.I really cannot find anything to say that could take away from full marks all round with the exception of the bar prices which are a little expensive, but for the food, atmosphere, and attention to detail I will continue to be a regular diner here. Its well worth it, so full marks it is.

Googled for an Indian in Stranraer. 2 listed. Same place but changed owners and name. Parked at rear of a large building that would make a nice hotel with a little TLC.Nice chap met us at back door and led us through a conservatory with a koi pond up stairs into the restaurant. The interior was as shabby as the exterior but the restaurant area had been freshened up although it was a little bland. The waiter/owner/manager was also very friendly. He moved from London a few months ago to take over this place. He took our order and was happy to accommodate my 4 year olds request for 2 starters together for his main. Food and drink arrived and were amazing. Had a mango lassi which hit the spot after a hot curry (salty lassi not to my taste but at least I tried it). End of meal liqueur on the house was a really nice unexpected unusual touch. Hope the locals support this place off season to keep it open for the tourist season. Wish the new owners all the best. Hope he and his wife can find a social scene to keep them in Stranraer or they'll move back to London.

Firstly, this is a review of the takeaway we had recently but before I mention anything else so as to avoid confusion, this was from the Bollywood which used to be the Taj Maha and is now Stranraer Tandoori. Has it changed hands or just different marketing? Anyway, the meal we ordered and picked up consisted of a prawn balti [my said it was great] and a special tandoori [chicken on bone, chicken and Lamb tikka, butterfly prawn and a sheik kebab served with salad and nan bread. Verdict, absolutely dreadful and would have been returned had we not live 4 miles away and the fact that I'd downed a beer on getting home. Bearing in mind we had to wait for it the meal was dry and shriveled, almost like it had been sitting around all day; may be it had.So, whilst my wife would be happy to return for another balti I think I'll go to the chippy!

This is the 3rd visit (excluding take-aways) since the changes and each has been delightful. The service is prompt, courteous and friendly but not intrusive. The food is always first rate. we tend to order a dish each, plus naan and rice to share, and try everything. So far I've tried the Bollywood Special Balti, the Chicken Madras, Chicken Patia,Bollywood Lamb, Chicken Masala, and my favourite, Lamb Nawabi. I'd be happy to eat any again (and probably will!). We usually start with poppadums and pickles, and have never had room for a dessert yet! These appear to be bought-in kulfis and sorbets. There are all sorts of deals, buffet nights, banquets etc to try. So far I've only tried the full menu, and the lunch deal which was limited but plenty to choose from, and extremely good for the price. Takeaway dishes have been to the same standard.Trip Advisor asked me if this is one of the best meals I've had in a restaurant, and I only put "No" because I've been lucky enough to eat in Michelin-starred restaurants etc. It's certainly one of the best Indian meals of its price, taking into account food, variety of choice and service.

My partner (who isnt usually a big indian eater) absolutely adored the Chicken Korma that was prepared for her and to my surprise finished the whole portion. The dining room itself is very clean and the small lights on the wall add to the authentic feel of actual 'bollywood'. As I entered the building I was greeted by a very polite young girl; who hung up my coat and then showed my partner and I to our table and took our drink order. After this a waiter took over from her. The himsel was also polite and friendly, although I had already experienced this due to my frequent takeaways as it was the same man that had given me my order before. All in all I would definitely return here for a meal as in Stranraer this is the only real place to sit in a good atmosphere and enjoy a fine indian meal.

The Taj Mahal recently changed to "Bollywood" was a great experience. Me and my boyfriend enjoyed our meal as we went on a Wednesday which is the special banquet night. In my opinion I loved this meal deal! The service was fabulous and staff are really friendly and helpful. The establishment is spotless no doubt about that. I would definitely recommend this to anyone interested in going. Overall one of the best meals I've had and I loved the atmosphere. I will definitely be back again!!

New name "Bollywood" was Taj Mahal, Stranraer. April 10th (Easter week) lunchtime menu, 2 courses £7.95. Firstly ordered a beer from the menu but they didn't have it; the second choice tasted off. They use the evening menu for lunch, limited to the starters and the cheaper mains, but excluding dishes with prawns or salmon. So I ordered a Chicken Chat starter and Lamb Madras main, but then told - no lamb! So had chicken starter & chicken main. At this point I wondered why I'd bothered coming in. The meal was pretty average - it was certainly not freshly prepared.

We heard that the Taj Mahal had changed ownership and had become the ‘Bollywood’. A friend advised that the food was much improved from that served by the Taj Mahal so we decided to give it a try.I was put off right from the outset. We entered through the entrance off the weed strewn car park; passed a mucky pond with goldfish and up the back stairs with a filthy carpet that looked as if it hadn’t been cleaned for months. This led on to a sticky, food laden carpet on the access route from the kitchen to the dining room. The dining area looked bleak and tired. Clearly the owners had not invested much in the decor. The staff were pleasant, friendly and attentive throughout and the service was good. The food varied massively. I chose a mild dish of Hyderabadi chicken in a cream sauce with cashew nuts. What arrived was a sickly sweet cream sauce with cubes of chicken floating in it. I think maybe the chef forgot the creamed cashew nuts as I couldn’t taste them. It was lukewarm and pretty revolting. The Onion Bhajis which I ordered for starters were much better. Two of our party of four enjoyed their meals.I confess that I couldn’t get over the dirty state of the place. If my feet stuck to the carpet then I wondered what the kitchen must be like.I know that the owners are new and are obviously trying hard. The restaurant is ‘half way there’ but it would need to be cleaner before I would considered going back.

First takeaway since changed hands and very disappointing. Bought dearest item on takeaway which did not include the pilau rice as promised and the lamb was tough. Also although said was fairly hot was bland. The takha dahl was runny and also tasteless. Will not return

We went tonight for a meal, it has changed hands recently (now called Bollywood) but the service and food where absolutely first class. New menu with vast choice, staff were very friendly and helpful, food was delicious and cooked fresh to order but did not have to wait long. Two courses with soft drinks for less than £35. Will be back!

perhaps not the best time to review this, the Taj Mahal has changed hands and is about to be refurbished and renamed. Its to be called Bollywood. We turned up without booking and were made welcome. The meal was very good but the décor was a wee bit bland. However the new owner came across and advised us he had recently taken over, had upgraded the kitchen and was about to start work on the premises. He has great plans for the future and one thing is for sure- we will go back.

Having had plenty of curries since the Taj Mahal opened, my carry out experience of saturday 24th January was so disappointing...I ordered it at lunch time ( as usual ) for our dinner later on at night..When I got it home, the first thing I noticed, or didn't notice was where was the usual gorgeous aroma of indian spices ...Weird...My Chicken Tikka Chasni had six pieces of tikka in a sauce which had way too much coconut...Then came my Jalfrezi...No smell of garlic or ginger or coriander,Infact it had no kick to it at all...The worst was yet to come..My Chicken Tikka Garlic was strips of chicken ( like a Chinese stir fry ) in a very bland sauce...This was never cooked in a tandoor...And it had huge chunks of garlic cloves which were not diced....I have since phoned the restaurant to enquire if they have a new chef and explained of my first disappointing meal...I was not impressed by the gentlemans responce...It will be a long time before I'am back....

Looked everywhere in Stranraer and Cairnryan for a place to eat and found this restaurant open. We received a warm welcome and were the only customers there. We enjoyed a lovely meal, one of the best Indian food we've ever had. Funnily enough my partner forgot his mobile phone, we were 5 miles away when the restaurant rang my phone (they'd taken the time to investigate the numbers) to tell us. Very impressed with the owner and staff for their kindness and service. Will be back!

We had booked a table for 19.15 on arriving we entered the bar and ordered some drinks. After being served we were not even asked about reservation or even if we wanted food and had to ask for our table. After ordering our starters were brought out promptly and were very tasty unfortunately it was most probably the last bit of positive feed back I can give. We waited over 20 minutes for our starters to be cleared and an hour for our main courses to arrive. I between this time we were never asked if we would like any further drinks. The main courses were brought out one fish at at time and by the time they brought the rice out the plates dishes and nan breads were all cold. As we were a party of three it was hardly because we a lot of dishes to bring to the table. Although all the food tasted ok none of it was actually hot but luke warm. When we commented to the server he apologised and stated he would knock something off the bill however this did not happen as he disappeared and we waited a further 20 minutes to for another staff member to finally come over. We were never offerred a sweet or coffee. I could understand if the establishment was busy that service might be slow but we were the only table in the bar area and through in the other area there seemed to be only one larger party in. Two female staff spent the entire night at the bar giggling rather than actually doing any work and the other young lad although polite didn't appear to have a clue what he was doing. So rather than dispute the bill I paid the full amount but would never return or recommend it for a meal out. Given that Stranraer is a small town with many restaurants and eateries in the surrounding area you would think they could get the basics of good service right.

I visited here for a quiet meal on a Saturday night. On walking in first appearances were good, although the signage could be inproved as they pointed us upstairs...when infact the restaurant was downstairs. Our host was friendly and attentive. A drinks order was taken in good time and they had a good selection on offer. I went for a Chicken Dopiaza and Pilau rice. It looked good when it arrived however seemed to lack taste. There weren't as many onions as there should have been, afterall the dish should be packed full of them. There was however a good quantity of meat and the rice was superb. My Naan bread was also excellent. All in all for the price you pay it isn't bad. I would take happily go back and explore the menu further.

After staying with friends for the week we ate here on our last night. What a mistake. Although the restaurant was not full the staff obviously could not cope. Curt service, no drinks offered, orders took forever to come. All dishes lacked flavour and were full of food colouring. Chef could be heard shouting in the kitchen. Staff spent the whole evening apologising to everyone for their poor service. Stranraer's answer to Fawlty Towers !

My wife and I ate here on Saturday night for the first time and what a disappointment firstly there was no draught lager and were served bottles of warm cobra lager, secondly the pakora starter was of meagre portions and was oozing grease thirdly we waited 45 mins for the main and it arrived just before we were about to leave it also was very greasy and was served with the wrong type of rice from what we ordered. I have read previous reviews about here and I think I must have been in the wrong place, we did not complain as sorry to say we wont be back

One of the invoices says The India Palm the other says Royal India? Who knows what’s going on there? No breakdown on the bills just a total price so no idea if you’ve been charged for what you’ve actually had.Service was ok but rushed, food was poor. My main course seemed to be unidentifiable gristle in rice.
