Taberu Japanese Restaurant in Oxford

Absolutely awful customer service. I walked in and there was no one queuing. Not one staff member made an effort to greet me, nor asked me to wait. One of the staff members made eye contact but quickly scuttled away. I waited for nearly 10 minutes actually witnessing staff have a casual chat! Never visit again.

Visited here twice,First time I’ve tried shrimp udon,it have really nice soup base also chewy udon. Second time I ordered takoyaki and pork ramen.The takoyaki was freshly made and taste really similar to Japan’s one. The ramen soup base was nice too. Going to visit again.

This place is absolutely great. The staff was one of the nicest I have ever experienced in any restaurant before. The food was really tasty. What a great experience would really recommend 👌

The food was amazing. We got a wide selection of sushi as well as the seaweed salad, edamame spring rolls, and pork katsu. We also had the apple gyoza, chocolate mochi, matcha ice cream and black sesame ice cream for dessert. It was all absolutely delicious. My brother spent 6 months in Japan last year and was really craving some sushi - this absolutely hit the spot for him! The only problem is the music which is quite loud and mainly centres around club bangers which makes the atmosphere feel a bit odd. It would be really nice if they perhaps played some Japanese city pop or shibuya pop in my opinion. My mum loved the music though (she runs exercise classes) so each to their own!

Food, atmosphere was great, although I felt a bit rushed by the waiter. Also find a bit odd the way they treated the allergens questions, I basically got a big book in my lap to dive into the information.

Nice place serving authentic Japanese dishes. Can't fault any of the food we've ordered, all freshly made and nicely presented. We've ordered okonomiyaki skewers and volcano roll for starters which were both very tasty, loved the presentation of the volcano rolls. For mains it was tonkotsu ramen and salmon teriyaki bento box. The ramen was excellent, with nice and silky broth and super tasty and tender rolled chashu pork belly, yummy. Bento box was lovely as well, salmon done perfectly, well done, flaky but still juicy. The staff is professional, attentive, and very friendly. Taberu is definitely a place to return to when we'll be in the area again.

This place was recommended to me a lot especially to have ramen. I had chicken ramen and I have to say I’ve had better ramens. The broth was very thin and super greasy and did not taste like how it should be. I really want to go ahead and try their sushi next time. But I would not eat ramen if I go again…

Me and my mom decided to come to this restaurant as we were wandering around and stumbled upon this place. We were greeted and brought to our tables with very nice service. Chahek gave us a wonderful experience and dining, the food was brilliant and very customer welcoming. The staff are ready to explain and help with the dishes if unsure, the chefs are very efficient and can make the food within minutes. it was a overall a good experience.

Moved away from the area but I miss ordering from here so much. Such good quality food!

Cowley maki is delicious Spicy tuna maki is somewhat delicious The yakitori is somewhat delicious but greasy The seaweed salad is not delicious at all The japanese soda (ramune) is nothing special I would come back to try more makis next time

I pay the service fee but the waiter asked me to take my rubbish(used tissue) away. I feel that I’ve been racially discriminated against. Say Japanese restaurant but discrimination against Asians. If you are an Asian, DO NOT come to this restaurant! Re: In fact, I remember there does not exist any other customers in the dining hall, except me. And the respond said their staff wanted to protect others safe. Unbelievable!

The food was cold, not fresh as it should be. However the service was attentive,warm and friendly. As a Japanese restaurant I would expect food to be top quality and unfortunately it is not the case. Not bad tho

My top sushi choice in Oxford. Taberu roll and spicy tuna roll are my staples, though they have loads of other options (great ramen and bento boxes). Always quick delivery.

Used to be our favourite Japanese restaurant until I caught Salmonella there. They did not apologise, admit fault or produce the refund they promised although there was no doubt that i caught it from under cooked chicken Yakitori. Generally good food, but they have acted terribly with no honour or compassion. Cross with myself for not reporting the incident at the time as I didn't want to get them in trouble. Misplaced loyalty.

Cosy little Japanese restaurant, and over of our favourites. The food comes when it is ready, so don't expect starters to come out first; order what you intend to as you go. Although you can't book online, they'll take a booking over the phone.

Three of us were at a loose end on a Friday night in a busy Oxford, and wished for a meal at about eight in the evening. Everywhere was very busy - and noisy - and we were starting to despair when we found Taberu. It too, was busy, but also quiet and the food was magnificent. I ordered Tuna Sushi followed by Beef Guyani on rice with a side of crispy spring rolls. It was quite simply, glorious - and very filling, as were the dishes chosen by the others. The service was attentive, swift and invariably courteous. We all agreed that this had been a most fortunate choice. One of us requested a business card in order to publicise the restaurant. The Waiter apologised for not having one, but produced a slip of paper with the details together with a smiling face and message "Thank you for visiting us" - a lovely touch. All in all it was a beautiful experience and we shall definitely wish to repeat it. Thank you very much, Taberu!

The best sushi restaurant I’ve ever been! Always so delicious, fresh sushi! Soy sos, ginger, wasabi is always on the table and you can use as much as you like it. First class service, very nice, smiling and helpful waiters 👌🏻always I’m getting my order as fast as possible. I am coming back there every week! If you want to eat the best sushi in the Oxford, you should choose Taberu! ❤️

A week ago I celebrated my 21st Birthday with the loveliest dinner in the upstairs private dinning room - I truly can't recommend this experience enough!! I called the restaurant to book which was a smooth and easy process which to my pleasant surprise did not require any deposit despite it being a large group of us (the room has a capacity to seat 16). Upon entering we were led through and up the stairs to a the room which was nicely decorated and not too stuffy as to allow for a comfortable experience although there were 16 of us in the room on a summers evening. I was then introduced to our lovely waitering staff for the evening: Lila and Abhijit. They were dedicated to ensuring that our party were as comfortable as possible and did their upmost best to accommodate all of our requests. Their service was impeccable and the evening was magical because of them. I had eaten lunch at Taberu a couple of times prior and the food had always been top notch. The dinner menu similarly did not disappoint!! My particular favourites were the fried vegetable gyozas (some of the nicest I've ever eaten) and the Cowley Road sushi roll. To top it all off, the staff accommodated that my parents pay us a quick visit in the middle of dinner to make a toast and to cut cake. My parents called prior and the staff were incredibly helpful and nice to them so it ended up being a surprise to me (a testament to the smoothness and skill of customer service as Taberu) !!! Thank you Taberu for making my 21st celebrations so special :)

The food was absolutely outstanding.The waiters and manager were very kind and friendly. There were many options and the California rolls were my favourite. Agatha the manager was so lovely, welcoming and helpful. Excellent and fast service and reasonable prices for authentic Japanese food. That is why i am rating it 5 stars. I'd recommend you to go there as it was a fantastic meal and I will definitely come back.

Set lunches are really good value for Oxford. Wakame salad also recommended.

Recommendable. The staff is lovely, the food is delicious. They serve you quickly and the menu is varied without going overboard with multiple options. There are vegetarian options and it's cheap! Compared to sushi prices, it is very cheap and very good quality. Excellent presentation and very friendly waiters who are attentive to the table all the time. The place is a little small, to say the least. Not recommended to go with children (or babies or strollers). I also don't think it is highly recommended for people with disabilities or wheelchairs. I will repeat and it is definitely one of my favorite restaurants in Oxford.

This Japanese restaurant is amazing! The atmosphere is so cool and makes you feel like you're in Japan. The menu has tons of yummy traditional and modern Japanese dishes that look and taste amazing! You've got to try the sushi rolls - they're made with super fresh seafood and seasoned rice that's just perfect! And the ramen is so filling and the broth is full of flavor! The staff is really nice and they know a lot about the food. Everything is served so pretty that you'll want to take a picture of it! Definitely go check it out!

Went for what was meant to be a nice meal. Food didn't disappoint but we had a constant cold draught from the door, the smell of urine and toilet cleaner in the air and delivery services speeding past us every two minutes. So if you don't mind that it's a good place but make sure they give you a decent table.

Highly recommend ramen! The texture is smooth without sticking, and the soft-boiled egg tastes just right. In comparison, the edamame spring rolls were slightly inferior. Tangyang chicken nuggets were mediocre. The lights were relatively dim, and when walking on the street I thought there were no lights on. The service is great. Will definitely come again for the ramen. Update 7/3/2023: The bean curd rolls are very delicious. Spider roll tastes good but has a little too much sauce. Okonomiyaki skewers: average. Chicken katsu udon: The noodles and soup taste very good, the fried chicken coating is a little thick, but overall it is still very good.

Food is delicious! Not hugely authentic, and definitely tweaked to suit western tastes, but still a lovely sight for hungry eyes!!

Quality food, selection and great service.

I've been to Japan a few times and the majority of my Japanese friends and I agree this is the most authentic Japanese food you'll find in Oxford. The food is always delicious and served in good time, with lots of options for sashimi and sushi. Highly recommend the scallop nigiri - it has a very mild fish flavour and the meat is so buttery-soft it melts in your mouth. Refreshing Kirin beer comes in a frozen glass which is exactly what I'm looking for when it comes to Japanese beer. If you've never tried sushi or ramen before and want to play it safe, I recommend starting with salmon or tuna nigiri, karaage or yakitori fried chicken, and chicken or tonkotsu (pork bone). Tonkotsu broth is thick, rich and meaty which is perfect for a winter day, and topped with lovely chashu pork. Chicken katsu curry is always an easy go-to if you don't like noodles or fish.

My girlfriend is a chef from Italy (so has high standards). I’m a Brit and would be happy with beans on toast. We ordered from here using Deliveroo and both agreed it was the best Japanese we’ve eaten in a long time. Everything tasted fresh and authentic. We will definitely order from here again.

I visit Taberu often and I have to say, as a vegetarian - although I love their miso ramen, the avocado sushi is the best dish on the menu. It's so fresh and perfectly ripe, and the combination of the creamy avocado with mayo on the top - the soft, sticky rice is just unbeatable. The presentation is beautiful as well, with the sushi rolls neatly arranged on a stylish plate. The staff at Taberu are always friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is cozy and intimate. I highly recommend trying the sushi at Taberu - you won't be disappointed!

Not pretentious, just straight forward amazing food. I had the beef Gyudon meal deal with chicken gyoza and my wife the chicken teriyaki bento. My wife said she wants to give a 5 star fish review for this, even before we left. The kids menu was perfect.

Today was a very cold day and I was glad that it was very warm in here. I ordered Eel Dragon Roll and a Beef Teriyaki bento box and the food was delicious. The steak was well tender and juicy and the rice was very good.

Has always been great food here. Hadn't booked and was asked to vacate the table in an hour, which is understandable; the food service was so quick we were out in 30 min! Waiting staff friendly and polite. A little cramped but then it wouldn't have the same feel if it was a big place.

Amazing as always, I've been going to Taberu for years. The menu is pretty much always the same and so is the price. A little suggested from a usual customer is to maybe include a special menu, just to make the food experience slightly more interesting. Overall I highly recommend!

Just arrived back from the U.S., East coast. After a long international flight a good meal was much needed and Taberu was highly rated on Google Maps. Finding parking was a nightmare, but we eventually found parking near the church several blocks away. It was a good walk to be able to see what's in the area of this side of Oxford. We missed the 11AM-12PM lunch crowd as it was not busy at the time we arrived at Taberu. The hostess was welcoming and she promptly got us to a table of our choice. The server was also courteous and welcoming and he was helpful to share his knowledge of the menu. The menu had a good variety and had a few dishes of some of our fave Asian restaurants back home. I looked forward to eating an Asian noodle dish. We were served our drinks and given some fortune cookies while we waited for our meals. The atmosphere was energizing with the sound of Latin dance music playing. Our food was served nice and hot. I was so hungry I forgot to take pics of our dishes. I took a pic of the menu at the front store window before we left Taberu. The only negative is the decor and restaurant table furnishings need updating and the latrines are located below the restaurant/underground. Overall, a decent place to eat Asian cuisine in Oxford.

Nice place for ramen. We ordered a seaweed salad, dumplings, spicy tuna roll, chicken Katsu udon and beef ramen. It was all served promptly. Service was great. They have asahi beer on draft. They have a lunch deal we’ll be back to try.

We had the beef gyudon with egg and chicken katsu curry - both were quite tasty. People were nice and it was pleasantly quiet.

I lived in Oxford for 4 years, and I love the city to pieces and whenever I come back this restaurant holds a special place in my heart The food here is delightful, easily the best Japanese food I've ever had! Please try the Chicken Curry Udon and the Takoyaki... Oh please please please try the Takoyaki I really can't get enough on it. On top of that the service is great, very reasonable prices and it's a solid location central to all you locals!

This is my favourite place to go for sushi and ramen in the city because of the quality and authenticity of the food. It is always delicious, and there is such a nice atmosphere in the restaurant. I also sometimes get take-out and it is always securely packaged so there are never any spills. My favourite thing to get is the takoyaki.

Good service, average food. The rolls aren't exactly creative but certainly okay. Prices are a little high unfortunately.

Really solid restaurant option on Cowley road. Having visited here twice the range of options I tried (both sushi and a ramen) have all been delicious and the service has consistently been friendly and efficient. If you’re looking for somewhere for a nice easy dinner in Cowley then I would highly recommend Taberu

The food was served quickly, it was relatively cheap and it was fine!

Where do I start. I order online for takeaway, it takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. I called a few times, was told that the food was almost done 1 hour in, clearly not true. The food finally arrives. It isn't even much of a distance to cover, (that was my bad, should've got takeaway), and the sushi looked 3 days old. Rice was bland and chewy, nori was in a sorry state, and the filling of each Hosomaki tasted old. The people who took the phone were apologetic which I appreciate, but quite frankly this is inexcusable. Hopefully I don't have to edit this saying I have food poisoning. Never coming back.
