Sun Kai in Dumfries & Galloway

Ate here years ago and decided to use takeaway on a return trip. Still the highlight of our stay. Tasty, hot and fresh and a good price.

The meaning of the given name Sunkai represents creativity, curiosity, charm, friendliness, cheer and social life…. This place has it all wrapped up in one . Been a while since we last visited and decided takeaway and what a feast and fantastic value for money. Marie so socialable, chef very creative with flavours . Cheer… always smiling is Marie as she took the order and so charming and friendly and never forgot our faces . I am always curious to try a dish I haven’t had before .. so tonight we had beef and tomato , succulent pieces of beef in a really tasty sauce and a good starter for someone just trying out Cantonese dishes . Prawn foo yung ( hubby is a great fan of the sea) Chinese pork cooked with water chestnuts and bamboo shoots … delicious. Everyone’s favourite sweet and sour chicken balls and a good size too and really tender moist chicken inside . One portion of King Prawn rice which is enough to serve two with all the other dishes .. of course no Cantonese is complete without prawn crackers .. Thank you again Sunkai very happy bunnies and at £28.30 well worth the money ❤️❤️

Food was dismal, ordered Fillet Steak Cantonese Style & asked for medium rare, told it was pre-cooked and unable to accommodate, came in a sugary sweet red sauce with onions & 4 small pieces of steak which I would argue wasn't fillet. Special curry consisted of chicken & 4 prawns. After waiting over 2 hours for our order it didn't contain the fried rice we'd order,hot & sour soups were lukewarm & tasteless. Only positive was the chicken & sweetcorn soup which was delicious but again only lukewarm. BBQ Ribs were average but expensive at £5.30 for the ribs & an additional £1.30 for BBQ sauce. Will not be eating from this place again

Ordered a takeaway to pickup, food was ready exactly when they said it would be. Was clearly cooked fresh as it was still hot after a ten minute drive home. Excellent COVID-19 precautions in place. Would recommend and will be back.

Ordered food for 7 of us, it was just ok, nothing special. Was just warm when we picked it up so by the time we got it home it wasn’t very hot at all. Tasted ok but I wouldn’t rush back.

Great selection of meals to share and very, very enjoyable. Great service from arrival drinks through to sweets for those who could! Excellent value always a bonus.

Nice welcome, good table, freshly cook food. The restaurant wasn't busy so we had lots of time to take to owner and her daughter about Stranraer.

Bang average. 5/10. Middle diddle. There are things that are decent, the ribs for starters, meaty, tasty n decent enough. The spring rolls were okay. The mains we tried were chicken chow mein, again okay nothing starting. The sing chow mein, Singapore as it used to be was super spicy, beyond my taste buds. The curry likewise had heat. I would not go rushing back. The 13 bucks for three courses was a little steep too. I did not enjoy my visit there.

Prior reviews seemed to vary greatly so we were hesitant to go. However, we were glad we did. The atmosphere is indeed a little dim but it was not objectionable at all. The service was perfect. The food was very good. We had the sweet and sour soup and the corn and crab soup and both were good. The menu is extensive. We shared a combination seafood dish with crispy noodles which we thought was great. We also shared a starter of scallops which were wonderfully spicy yet let the flavor of the scallops come through. They have a limited selection of beers on tap. Prices are reasonable.

The service was quick but the food was very disappointing, like it was out of a can. My husband couldn’t eat his. My beef was tough but edible although I have reflux.

The food appeared too quickly to be freshly cooked, the beef was tough and the schezuan crispy chicken looked like sweet and sour instead. It tasted like it was pork and like it was out of a can. Staff were friendly. I found the darkened atmosphere odd.

Staff lovely, gave great recommendations. Food really tasty and big portions for a very reasonable price. Would highly recommend. First Kung po worthy of its name in a very long time!

Visited for our first takeaway. Good quality food. Portions were fine. Ready within 15 minutes. A bit more expensive than my usual Chinese but not excessive. I would recommend if you’re looking for a good quality service.

We have only ever used the takeaway, but we have used it numerous times over the last couple of years, which is a recommendation in itself!

This is a lovely Chinese restaurant which is a little hidden away. The food is delicious and the staff are very friendly and helpful. My only small criticism is if you are vegetarian or eat halal or kosher the range of dishes is limited. There are no fish dishes only king prawns and scallops. But if your happy to eat king prawns the choice is excellent.

Met friends who had recommended this place. My son is coeliac, so ingredients are important. Waitress knew the contents of most dishes and any she was unsure of, she checked with the kitchen. Good food, well cooked and served. Excellent value

In Stranraer for an overnight stay and did a bit of research on the internet and found this gem of a restaurant which happened to be just round the corner from where we were stopping . The early bird 3 course menu is served from 5pm -9pm and has something for everyone,the soup was authentic chicken noodle and the chicken curry was superb and to finish off I had banana fritter At £11,90 for three courses I think it is fantastic value coupled with great service and when ever we are in Stranraer we will make a point of visiting Sun Kai

Tuesday evening isn't the best time for a meal out, but the only evening we had in Stranraer. I'm so glad we spent it at the Sun Kai!!! The food was hot, freshly cooked and delicious. I had the sweet and sour King Prawns (12 of them) with fried rice and hubby had the King Prawn Chow Mein... he managed a pudding, but I was full to bursting point. The house red wine is an excellent Romanian Merlot. If I'm ever back in Stranraer, I'll certainly go again. The waitress and the manager were friendly and efficient and made us feel like we were VIPs.

went with friends to the Sun Kai, staff are pleasant. There is nowhere to hang up coats/jackets and I was told that we could just through it over the back of our seats! I want happy with that . The food is good and pretty standard for a Chinese Rest. The portion size is good but this is an average place to eat with little atmosphere.

Phoned the Take Away part of this restaurant, placed an order for pick up, was told about 20 minutes for pick up. Arrived after 20 minutes gave my name to the person behind the counter, then waited another 30 minutes only to be told that they had no record of my order and what would I like.I decided to go else where for food that night absolutely terrible service received.
