This was a chippy on the higher street a few years ago / it is now a Chinese and nice fish and chips is now only served in local pubs . The Chinese is highly recommended - but there is no chippy now

Had a hell of a time finding it, it has now become a Chinese takeaway. Still serves a fish supper which was disappointing. Fish was way too thickly battered and the greasiest I've had. Chips were lackluster, not really worth eating. Partner had the Chow Mein "was OK, but a bit dry".

Stopped here on the way back to Kirkwall after cycling around Hoy and hanging around in a cold and windy downpour whilst waiting for the ferry.Long wait (Friday evening at 18:30, it's to be expected) but pretty cheap and piping hot and, to be honest, when you're freezing cold with a 16 mile windy cycle in front of you back to Kirkwall, believe me this was good, which is a bit better than the average TA forced me to give as I couldn't honestly give it Very Good!

This is the second best chip shop in Orkney. Not a negative, you have to track down the best which is a van which has various stops across the mainland and unless you are a local, lots of luck. The Haddock supper here is superb. Take it out to the point and enjoy the view and that undiscribable aroma of malt vinegar, salt and fish as you inhale your supper. Enjoy.

Visited the 'chip shop' last Friday. No battered sweets for us, we ordered simple fayre. Ordered at around 7-o-clock. we didn't have to wait long either. I had the local haddock, chips, haddock patty, and a patty with curry sauce. The fish was fresh and sweet, and cooked perfectly in a crisp bronze battered coating. Tasted fabulous. The whole meal, was spot on. Much better than the anaemic, pasty, pale yellow coloured slops from most chippies in the midlands. Well served up, with very little residual fat. Can't recommend highly enough. Would i go again, damn right i would.. Delicious.!!

Opened packet and batter from fish stuck to paper. Fish grey not white. Entire meal of fish and chips glued together in one heap which suggests not heated to correct temperature? Local delicacy of patties were slimey and impossible to cut with knife due to incorrect cooking temperature making the coating which should be crunchy meld with the soft inner to create gunk. Young untrained staff would appear to be the problem. Not going back here ever. Apparantly was excellent under a previous owner but not now. Was other halfs birthday and this was replacement for Hamnavoe which was shut. A birthday to remember? No

If I could recommend one thing on the menu at the Stromness chippy, it would be the patties. If you are not enlightened to the pattie, they comprise mincemeat (not the stuff of Christmas mince pies), mashed potato, onion, pepper and, occasionally, "secret" spices. These delights are then fried in batter until golden and crispy. The Stromness chippy also does haddock patties, but I've never found out if there is a pattern to their appearance, as they don't seem to be on the menu all the time. Add patties to your list of must dos if you're in Orkney, along with the beaches, neolithic stuff, etc.

We've used Stromness Fish and Chips a couple of times when we've visited Orkney and there are very solid guidelines as to when their Fish and Chips are served at their best!Opening hours are limited to Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Never, Never, Never buy your fish and chips before 7.30pm in the evening, or you'll get 'warm ups' pre-prepared part cooked chips, which just end up soggy and greasy. Similarly with the haddock, the batter goes limp and soggy. Cod is not an option, they don't serve it!The staff are a delight but appear to be petrified of the owner (fish fryer)!Hit it right and their Fish and Chips are the best you'll find anywhere. Enjoy!

The bag with food was dumped on the counter as she walked away without comment - to tell the other member of staff that someone had said she was gorgeous. I am all for young people having fun and chatter - but not even to stop and say - 'here is your order' or 'thank you' I had to ask 'is that everything in there' ?

Firstly he staff were not very friendly, they appeared to be too busy taking amongst themselves to bother much with us. Never have I been to a chip shop like this before. Being veggie, I know I can be limited at eating places - but we wanted something quick and easy for our tea, on our last night in Stromness and opted for the chippy. Were one of the first thro' the door at opening time - 5pm - in fact you had to be early, place is only open til 9pm. After checking out the menu, asked for macaroni pie - sorry, we've got none. Tried asking for macaroni cheese - sorry none. Next option was veggie curry - surprise, surprise we've got none of that either. Just before I decided 'forget it' and leave the shop and asked for veggie haggis - which they actually had.Had no idea how this was going to be presented, but after waiting on our order being cooked, we kind of guessed by looking at the drainer - every single item was in a thick layer of batter - not sure I've ever seen battered chicken in a chippy before.Anyway, haggis, once you hacked thro' the batter was ok - but greasy. Family member had the chicken, which was dry, full of bones and the batter, again, was greasy. All in all, we decided we would not return to this chip shop and wish we'd gone with the option of a ready meal from the local co-op - anything would have been better than what we got for the price.

unico negozio Fish & Chips dell'isola.

As the only fish and chip shop for miles, they've obviously got a captive market. There's not a lot of choice of fast food in Stromness and with three boisterous and fussy boys, didn't want to pay for a fancy meal in a restaurant. Unfortunately the food was distinctly average and the portions were on the measly side. I had a sausage supper which I could have eaten twice over, as in quantity not quality. Where we come from the sausage supper is usually quite large, but there was just one small average sized sausage in batter. We asked if two were supplied, but no. The kids ate theirs. However, probably just because they were hungry. If we went to Stromness again we'd probably avoid.

I appreciate it was one member of staff's first night but the other member should have been able to take an order and then total up the bill correctly. Not only did he over charge me 50p he argued it was only 40p. Must not us the same counting words in Stromness as they do in the rest of Scotland. The fish was sliced so thin this place should be done under the trade discrimination act, it was a battered supper I had. The white pudding was soggy with grease, I dont think the vinigar bottle was working and the chips gave me indigestion they were so greasy. And as if that werent enough I had to return with a red pudding, because they gave us sausage. Wouldnt give us a refund because it was claimed this was a red pudding. ( Hot tip hen, we are scottish we know what a red pudding tastes like and I really would like to think thats how your treat forginers) When I informed the boss that I wouldnt be back she told me "fine". We stay in Stromness for 2 weeks every year and look forward year-on-year to our fish suppers from this great place. We very rarely have fish and chips at home (Norwich) as no-one does it like Stromness!! We have been to places which proclaim to do the best fish & chips but don't believe them!! As said in other reviews, the batter is crispy, the fish is huge and meaty; never sloppy and the chips are real traditional ones. My one problem is that I would love to try the other things on the menu but I can never resist the fish!! My husband & I sometimes share a haggis as well as our fish suppers but that's a bit greedy!!!
