We arrived at 13:00hrs. Electronically ordered our food at 13:30. By 14:30, I asked a waiter where was our order. I was informed that if it is ordered, it will be on the way. Meanwhile other customers, who came later, ate and left. By 15:30, I asked again. The new waiter checked their tickets and produced the food within 5 minutes. I think they forgot or deliberately ignored us. The food must have been ready for a long time and has been sitting on the transfer area, gathering dust. Our sausages were cold and the potatoes were burnt. We paid and did not leave a tip.

I booked a table weeks in advance. On the day, it was sunny and our table was in the shade. I asked if we could move into the sun. Numerous requests were refused because the other table was reserved and they were waiting 30 minutes before releasing it. It turned out that due to a fault in their “system”, the table wasn’t reserved. When they finally realised this, they gave the table to some walk-ins. Even more infuriatingly, Victor the supervisor told me that they couldn’t accommodate requests to move tables because “everyone would ask”. I would’ve had better service from a robot trained to run a restaurant.Rubbish customer service combined with a terrible online ordering system has reduced this place to an overpriced Wetherspoons. I really used to enjoy coming here, but never again.

Great location and set for COVID world. The lentil soup which though tasty was luke warm and too many peppercorns. The currywurst with potatoes and sauerkraut gave a good wurst experience but potatoes were not crispy. Poor value at about £13 which was almost double the price of just wurst and a roll.

One member of staff was very rude to me and my mum. I assume he was a manager/supervisor because he appeared to be overseeing everything - very overzealously might I add.He abrasively confronted me and my mum when we made our way to the toilets not knowing we were customers. We had just bought three portions of their overpriced currywurst and I was annoyed that when we explained the situation he did not immediately apologise for so harshly accusing us of using their facilities as a “public toilet”. In fact, when my mum was in the toilet he decided to reprimand me further for being in the way of a man waiting for the gents’ toilet. He later apologised to my mum when I was in the toilet but I was still annoyed. You shouldn’t work in hospitality/customer service if you’ve got an abrasive personality. The interaction really really ruined my day.

Whoever has tried proper German food knows that this is more than an embarrassment. Its a joke. Overpriced lidl sausage that costs nearly 14 quid. Lentil soup for £6.50 is completely tasteless and looked like dishwater. For the same price you can visit the Ivy and eat incredibly well. Ordered a dark beer and instead received something completely different, a white beer with attitude from the staff claiming that thats exactly what I have ordered. Once I insisted on my original order, received a lacklustre watered down dark beer with no head. 1 star only for the great location. I will definitely not be returning or recommending this place.

Honestly. If you are familiar with bavarian food you will notice this is a JOKE within seconds. We ate here after a long pleasant walk down the river. I got menus for our table since the waiter refused to acknowledge our arrival. I ordered mini bratwursts with mashed potato and sauerkraut, which you order yourself at the till which they then bring to your table which you then have to take around the corner of the seating area to the self-serve condiments (mustard; ketchup, not sure whyt hey don't just put bottles on each table..). the sausages were literally the same as the ones you can buy from Lidl or Aldi. However, the biggest disappointment was the mashed potato which was actually Smash - dehydrated potato powder mixed with water resembling a trampled turd in both texture and appearance. I paid £13 for Smash and Lidl sausages with a 'salad garnish' that didn't even had any dressing. The best thing about this place was the cleanish toilet.

Some people think it's great German food and it's nice to be sitting by the Thames. Really? In truth, it's one of the worst meals I've had in 5 years, and what you eat is not German, but fake meat sausages and meatloaf with reconstituted fillings served with frozen or dried mash potato mix. A small portion so-called German meal here costs around £16 with beer. People taste the beer, but not the food it appears. Avoid this place if you want good German food at all.

What a discovery on the banks of The Thames River at Richmond. With a beautiful Monet-like willow drooping it's leaves in the water, an excellent variety of Bavarian food and drinks awaits you. You might want to eat here several times to get the full Bavarian feel of this excellent cuisine. Many a German accent was heard around us as we ordered and then ate in the sunshine by the river. Tables are abundant and we enjoyed watching the tide come in so quickly as we ate and drank surrounded by happy people, their kids and dogs and quite few cyclists fuelling up for the popular tracks along the river banks. Sauerkraut, warm potato salad, sausages, steins of Bavarian beers and Bavarian wines are all to be had in this authentic restaurant.

We've been regular patrons over the years, and the setting remains excellent - next to the river, well shaded, lots of tables and with a safe place at the back for children to play including slides and seesaw. But sadly the staff are changing, and for the worse! My wife is allergic to potatoes, and on previous visits they've always happily swapped the side of potatoes for a bread roll, with a smile. Not any more though - despite bread rolls being on the menu at 90p and the fried potatoes at £3, apparently no swaps are allowed at all. What really upset us though was the sheer rudeness of the staff - "we've never made substitutes" (not true, we've been eating here for years) and sneering "I very much doubt that's true" when we said it's never been a problem in the past, followed by more arguing and attitude as the queue behind us grew. Setting aside the sheer pettiness and and refusal to accommodate any reasonable allergies, the real problem is the nasty attitude - there's really never a need for such offensive response to courteous requests. If the policy on substituting or removing sides has changed, just tell us politely and we'll head elsewhere, don't be rude... This place will no doubt continue to prosper thanks to the idyllic location, and the food remains good (albeit increasingly pricey for what it is) but this experience suggested that either staff training is falling away or Stein's is resting on its laurels, and sadly I'm not sure we'll be back.

Very much enjoyed Stein's. Came here when it was a rather miserable and rainy day, but had a lovely time with friends over good beer and simple yet very tasty food. I picked the 'Münchner Bratwurst mit Bratkartoffel Salatgarnitur', which is basically sausage, fried potatoes and salad - all of which was excellent; I also liked that you could add a selection of different mustards and ketchup - reminds me of when I have been to Germany (or Switzerland). If I was in Richmond again I'd certainly come back for more sausage and beer!

The ordering system is dumb. It's a bit of a wrestle in the queue in such a confined space (and the food queue is competing with the beer and toilet queues). I went along by myself to see if it was worth taking the family and - nope. It is amusing if you go by yourself because you need a table number to order food. Not sure how you are meant to keep a space reserved when you are alone. A towel maybe? Ha ha. I had a hilarious catch-22 conversation with the guy at the till. They could perhaps put a table aside for singles but now I come to think of it, I don't really see it being much fun for couples either. In any case, I do not know why they can't have a system like Wagamama. Well, I can guess that they are just being cheap - and that is the overriding impression I got from the place. I would guess that the ordering system allows them to use cheaper labour to serve the tables. Maybe German sausages are expensive to source, but the food is quite pricey and everything feels like it's done simply to pump up the margin. I've eaten similar in Munich, and places like that are fun and the food is cheaper and better. Stein's feels like a cattle market designed to extract your cash as efficiently as possible, and there's no attempt to make it any kind of experience (other than a Sainsburys till-queue simulation). I didn't half feel ripped off. I'm sure if you're with friends it could be more fun, but then someone has to volunteer to stand in the tedious queue. Anyway, I'd go somewhere else if I wanted to chat with friends. I had a £20 bill for a beer and a bland sausage-based main course inside me. Home made CURRY sauce; really? The £5.50 pint was OK, but German beer is not exactly hard to come by these days.

Slap bang on the Thames walkway in Richmond, this place is very well situated. We went there on 2018's hottest day when the temperature touched 36C and cold beer was all we could think of. This was supposed to be a short visit and just a drink, but after having queued for a long time we were told that we weren't allowed to buy beer unless we had dinner. I've never ever heard anything like that before, anywhere in England, and wonder if it's really a legal rule or just a way to up sales? Anyway; we bought food which was OK when it came to sausages. Vegan sausage was good and so was the currywurst, whereas my tuna salad left more to wish.

We came here in the summer, which has to be the best time to visit, as all seats are outside. There are outdoor heaters, but a warm summer evening by the river has to be the best time to come here, although competition for the tables closest to the river is strong. The view of the river is wonderful, always interesting, and this is a great place to spend an evening watching passers by and river life whist enjoying your food. The tables are long trestle types, so this is not personal, romantic dining, but it can also make for interesting conversation with your neighbours at dinner. You order at the counter, then pay separately for food and drink, not my favourite system of paying but it works ok. The menu is Bavarian - wurst in a number of disguises, with traditional accompaniments - sauerkraut, which I love. The salads looked good, but we had all gone there for the wurst, so we chose bratwurst, currywurst and cheese and pork sausage - all tasty and filling. We also stuck to beer rather than wine, enjoying the blonde beer on a hot summer night. There were options other than wurst - including a vegan dish - with schnitzel or salad looking good. The desserts were interesting, the friend who chose the Germknodel felt that it was rather heavy and uninteresting, I chose cheesecake, which was what I epected for baked cheesecake, a goo balance of flavours, but again a very filling end to a meal. This is a great restaurant for a fun evening with friends and family, but take it as it is and be prepared for Bavarian food and the functional set-up, it works and can make for an enjoyable and different meal.

One of the hidden gems in Richmond down by the river just past Gauchos on the towpath. Lovely location by the river. Tasty Bavarian food. Long tables so great for groups. You cannot beat it on a sunny day.

German sausages, cheesy pasta and beer followed by apple strudel and dumplings. Good food and a fantastic location on the river which is perfect on a sunny day. A bit pricey but good service and you are paying for a seat next to the river.

We were looking forward to a proper German sausage lunch by the river, but was so disappointed with the "fast food" we were served. You can't order a beer until you've ordered food! The beer was erdinger Weiss beer and was good but £5.50 a pint.We both had the Munich bratwurst (or No. 2) as the waiter called them. These are nothing like proper German bratwurst at all. Just partly browned lukewarm skinny herby sausages (2 of) with cold, undercooked ( but some overcooked with hard bits) sliced fried potatoes and salad leafs without any dressing!Beach tables are too close together and too narrow to get 2 plates opposite each other. And very uncomfortable.

The food at Stein's is not going to win any prizes but it is still a great place. It's unusual, has a great atmosphere and is in a lovely location along the river (an easy stroll from the town). As soon as you sit down and open the menu you feel as if you are in Bavaria. I love Germanic food so I am in my element. I've eaten here quie a few times over the last six or seven years - and again today. It does feel busier and a tad more expensive but the quirkiness of a Bavarian restaurant and the fun element is still there, and for a group of friends their sharing menus are fantastic, but you had best bring a good appetite.

A great location on the river, this extended German fast food stall (it's not really a restaurant) does serve a good Currywurst in a laid back atmosphere. Best appreciated on a sunny day with a cold beer! No fuss, no frills.

Have been going here for years. Has become very popular and thus busy and now over priced. Obviously it's a German bar/restaurant and every time I've been, it's well attended by Germans, which must be good sign! The beers are fab, food tasty and one of the best places to be on a sunny afternoon in Richmond.

Locale informale, carino e simpatico, ben inserito nel contesto di Richmond, verde attorno, molto piacevole, ci stanno bene anche i bambini. Gentili e professionali. Il cibo buono e di ottima qualità. Qualche buon vino bianco, buona la birra. Prezzi nella media. Consigliato. Enjoy

This restaurant is situated right by the river so if you get a table overlooking the river it is absolutely beautiful. The food is nothing special and the price is average. I was not overly impressed.

Have visited this place many times over the last 3 months whilst staying in Richmond and since the weather warmed up. It's lovely to sit outside on the banks of the river and have a beer or wine while eating wholesome satisfying food. the currywurst is well worth considering but I have had salads and they are very tasty also. It's casual, staff are always pleasant and the food is consistent. It's not fancy dining - more like a barbeque feel but very enjoyable.

First of all, you are in greater London. Why choose from 3 different lager German beers and not from dozens British lager or ales from a near pub.If you think that you can just sit and have a refreshing beer to continue your walk later, guess again, you have also to order food with your beer. There is a no only alcohol rule in this place. So you have to order food but you don't want to, ok, the nice gentleman informs you that you have to order from (at least) some specific menus, so you can order your beer. Then, you pick your solo sausage (it is served with half a small tomato and a small bread) for 6£.Anyway, I didn't like this place. If you want German beer and German sausages with a nice view this is the place to go, if u want anything else avoid it at all costs.

We went as a group of 7 and ordered a variety of items. The menu listed many as suitable for 2. So our group doubled up on some things. When the food arrived it look more like orders for 4 rather than 2 which resulted in us having a tremendous amount of food to the point it was comical. So something to be mindful of when deciding. I am a vegetarian so I could not help with the quantity on our table. What I did have I enjoyed which was the lentil soup, the pretzel and some of the cheese. On a nice day, the location is unbelievably amazing, right by the river in a park area. They have heat lamps but no one seems to use them when we were there even though it got a little chilly towards the end. Would recommend for those in need of some beers and brauts or just nice easy meal in the area.

We have visited the Steins Richmond branch for the first time, location is perfect, with a nice view to the river, nice relax atmosphere. Service wise, I cannot really comment as the system they adopted is like Nando's, where you have to place the order at the till and help yourself with cutterly. However doesn't reflected on the price charged, which was Disappointed to say the least and to charge nearly £3,00 for a single espresso was a bit extortion. Also the portions served was a bit small compared to the other branch in Kingston where we have been many times. Therefore I will not return.

We used to walk around the restaurant, but just yesterday realised what is there. It was an unexpected, but very nice experience. We had one of the sharing platters for 2 pp, and some Paulaner beers. Felt like we are in Germany. Food came really quick, it was very delicious, the apple tart dessert was amazing. I think we just found our place for this summer!

Food/Drinks: good variety of German food (mainly sausages and pork) with excellent German beer. Notice that you must order food to get beer for license reasons. We had a schnitzel, a goat cheese salad and a board of sausages that were all very very good. The apple strudel for dessert was good too.Premises: Good outdoor tables for good weather. The tables are not very wide and the chairs are close to the next table's chairs so you will not have an ample space. I would not advice Stein's in the case of bad weather. Depending on the timing and day, it may also get very crowded.Service: OK service.Price: mid/high price, normal to London standards. Do not expect lower prices as it seems to be an informal place.

I have been to Steins many times , as always the food is great , the beer excellent and the ambience just right . This is not a cheap option for outdoor dining , but also this is not an imitation German Beer Garden , this is the closest you will get to the real thing . So the prices are a little more than you would pay in Germany , but you're paying for all the original beer and food from Germany .Sitting by the Thames on a sunny evening drinking Paulaner and eating Scnitzel with a group of friends takes some beating . If you want cheap and cheerful or imitation German then this is not the place for you . If you want quality food and drink and an authentic German Beer Garden , this is the spot .

In the words of Victor Meldrew! - and I even put it in writing - hey ho wife got 3 halves so had to be a gentleman and assist. I suspect I might still be there if tried to do the refund and reorder process. Food was nice though. As for Richmond - well the walk along the footpath by the river, on the way to Steins, as one of thousands of pedestrians on a nice sunny day, ended abruptly as I was ram raided from behind by a six year on a bike. Her and sister had all the gear, as did mother who rode sublimely on and not one of then apologised whilst I soldiered on with tyre tracks up the back of my trousers and a very sore ankle. How in God's name they don't have designated cycle/footpath is beyond me - proper accident waiting to happen - oh I forgot - it's councillors.

Wonderful spot on the river and it's absolutely glorious on a summer day. Hubs and I went today for lunch, everything was delicious. The Radler was the best lager shandy I've had in a while; certainly better than one from a British pub. We had the chicken escalope with potato salad and the goulash stew. Everything was so tasty and prompt! We plan on going back with a booking and having the sharing platter- Saw one today and it looked spot on. Definitely a place to visit when visiting Richmond!

Rick Steins has only been open since 17th March 17 so all glitches should have been dealt with by now - and they had! We arrived at this attractive converted barn with cobbled area and plenty of parking. Delightful staff welcomed us and discussed which table we would like... the window tables looking directly onto the Thames were taken but due to the clever mirrored 'window walls' everyone gets a slight sight of the river before the sunset. It's worth asking when booking if you wish to have a river table but it's first come first booked on the river table allocation. I noted some ladies asked for blankets later although it's enclosed so maybe it's a bit cooler by the full length windows. Parquet floor, wooden tables and linen napkins with baskets hanging of greenery hanging from the ceiling gave an elegant feel and helped with the acoustics. A very pleasant ambience to enjoy our Hendricks gin and Fevertree tonic whilst we relaxed and read our menus. Great menu - obviously seafood as it's a Stein restaurant although lamb Navarin and steaks were dishes on the menu too and also a vegetarian option were available . Roberto our waiter offered us waters plus soda bread and walnut bread served with olive oil, followed by a very tasty Muse Bouche of Carpaccio of tuna & pickled cabbage on a crouton. I chose a platter of Japanese style raw salmon, scallops, tuna and halibut served with wasabi, ginger and a very light soy sauce. My husband enjoyed fresh mackerel in an Asian salad of carrots peanuts which was quite salty but very tasty, the mackerel was a very small portion really compared with my generous but perfectly sized starter.I then had a beautiful cooked Dover sole filleted at the table with excellent proficiency by Fleur served with the first of the season minted Jersey Royal potatoes. The melted lemon butter was served separately in a cute little jug on the side - it was a very strong lemon sauce so go carefully before pouring over your sole. The husband had the salmon fish cake with poached egg and Hollandaise sauce with a side order of thin chips. He had to ask for more hollandaise almost immediately which arrived promptly but still only a tiny portion in a little dish. I would have thought it added a bit of style to the dish to serve it with a little pan or dish on the side. It must be noted that all the staff in their very stylish fabric and leather trimmed aprons were excellent, friendly and polite, attentive but not intrusive. The pudding menu looked divine! Liquorice meringues with chocolate mousse and raspberries, creamy rice pudding with grilled pineapple, panna cotta or sticky toffee pudding etc but we had to pass on the puds as we had also been out for lunch the same day. We saw various puddings arrive on neighbouring tables all looked fabulous. The loos were small but very clean and well lit. The general areas and bar where you could sit and have an aperitif were very tastefully decorated. The wine list is selected by Charlie Stein (one of Ricks sons). Extensive and each wine having helpful comments by him or Rick. The wine is generously marked up which you would expect but not outrageous. Rick and his family were eating here on Saturday night so look out for your celebrity chef. In a nutshell a thoroughly enjoyable evening in a great location and we look forward to returning.

I stopped off to buy a few deli bits and cakes, . I read the notice on the door "No more than 2 people in the shop at any one time." I waited until this state of affairs applied and went in. The door was closed despite it being a sunny and warm day. I attempted to open it but without sucess. While I was ordering my food at least 4 other customers came into the shop unchallenged (and its a tiny space). Meanwhile my food was being prepared by a surly young woman not wearing any disposable gloves, The loaf i bought was in a paper bag so weak that it split on the way out rendering it inedible, Nobody offered to help me or commented, it was very poor experience and needless to say I shall not be returning.
