We visited with my parents yesterday day, very welcoming, lovely service staff were really kind and helpful. love the environment clean but interesting things to look at and a relaxed atmosphere. Best of all was the food, being vegetarian it's often hard to find anything other than a veggie burger but this cafe offered all delious and well thought through options, my mum enjoyed halloumi and pesto bagal with thick fresh tomatoes and my partner and I had the veggie platter which was absolutely delious and really filling, so well presented, best veggie food we have had when eating out in a long long time.

We stopped for lunch whilst visiting John O Groats, and this was the highlight in an otherwise very touristy area. It was warm and welcoming, including our 2 dogs who got a welcome treat and plenty of pets and fuss. The food was so tasty but the cakes were the highlight, the doughnut was the best I've ever had! I loved the vibe of the place and service was faultless.

Stacks is a family run cafe that would cause a buzz in St John’s Wood let alone John O’Groats. Great coffee, delectable bakes and friendly service make it an unmissable stop if you’ve made it to this famous destination. Soon to be the best Deli in the far north too!

So happy we went to this place! We were in John O'Groats for a week for Orca Watch and tried every single cafe and restaurant in the area, and this was the one we came back to time and time again. Excellent choice of veggie food (hard to find elsewhere), DELICIOUS cakes and scones and excellent coffee. Snacks has a partnership with an endometriosis charity providing sanitary products, has won an accessible toilet award in the local area, and sells loads of local products instead of the big brands (Green Cola instead of Coke) - a commitment to being inclusive and supporting the local area is a big plus, and so wonderful to see in an area that is otherwise quite commercial by nature. A must if you're visiting.

Lovely cafe. Staff were so friendly and helpful. I was, sadly, too late for lunch (sad because the menu sounds amazing!), but I had a delicious cake and coffee, which was just what I needed before resuming my drive around the area. I really valued the atmosphere, and was so happy to see free sanitary products available in the bathroom – a seemingly small but very important touch!

What a really lovely cafe with the best staff. We stopped here for tea/coffee and a snack. They were out of their famous brownies but the fruit loaf we had was delicious. We returned to buy their wonderful little book on baking brownies (full of great tips as well as the recipes) and were able to buy a brownie that they had found. It was amazing! Forget the signpost, this is the reason for going to John O’Groats.

Amazing home made scones and Hot Rubens!! Traybakes and much much more. Absolutely delicious my only disappointment was that it didn’t have more breakfast items on as the car park was full at 10am and this little gem was the only place open. Poached eggs, Stornaway Black Pudding Bagels? Just a suggestion definitely NOT a criticism as what we had was amazing x

Really appreciated the variety of options to suit dietary requirements. We enjoyed the Mediterranean board, halloumi bagel, hot chocolate and a flat white. Service was friendly. Popped in to Stacks Bistro 2 days ago for lunch after building up an appetite by walking out to the cliffs to have a look at the actual "Stacks" of Duncansby. The staff were very freindly and welcomed us into this warm and cozy bistro. My wife and I both opted for the special which was melt in the mouth braised beef served with tasty garlic polenta and cabbage. The food was superbly cooked and tasted absolutely delicious. Feeling rather full after our main course we had to share some sticky toffee pudding with ice cream, which was also fabulous.I would highly recommend anyone who goes to John O'Groats to head to Stacks Bistro, you will not be disappointed.

Visited Stacks whilst on a brief visit to the area. Due to current social distancing we had to queue outside for a brief period. You were called forward by a door bell playing the Overture from William Tell. Quite amusing. The social distancing and precautions taken within the Bistro were very good. We were told they couldn't supply the normal lunch menu, alas, no problem as there was still plenty choice. We chose to eat in the garden area towards the side and back of the building. If ever back in the area we would would not hesitate to return. Staff working well under the current circumstances. Well done.

We were recommended by two people to have lunch here. We turned up at peak time, and were happy to wait the 40 minutes for a table, as the food looked and smelt delicious. I ordered the soup and a sandwich (with flat bread). After a few minutes a rather sullen teenager said the soup was finished. So my meal came with what looked like half a sandwich for almost the same cost as the full meal. After I had eaten my sandwich the food board was updated to say soup was back on. Why could the server not have just told me to wait a few minutes...

After scanning previous reviews - the good, the bad and the ugly - it's clear to me that people don't understand how to properly review restaurants. Just because a dog-friendly restaurant had a dog in it, you're mad? Grow up. There is an entire wall dedicated to doggie visitors inside. If you're one of these people who don't like dogs, go eat somewhere else.

Was appalled by the level of customer service at Stacks Bistro today. As regulars, a friend and I reserved a table for 1:30pm. At 1:32pm we were greeted by a member of staff who told us they didn’t think we were coming so had given our table away. I remarked that we were only 2 minutes late and surely there was a period of grace however, the member of staff continued to tell us that they had to turn customers away because they were keeping a table for us. We were then told that we could share the end of a table with another group. Obviously, we declined. If table reservations are an inconvenience to your business, then perhaps you should review this policy. It’s very easy to forget that it is us locals that keep small businesses like yourselves afloat when the tourist season ends!

I went as part of a bus tour. There were three buses pulling in so I waited 35 minutes before popping my head in the door. I saw some empty tables so I sat down. The young girl came over and told me that table was “taken” so I looked around and didn’t see anyone but moved for her anyway. I moved to a dirty table full of dishes where people were just leaving from. I continued eating and an older woman came over and asked me to leave. I said why? She said because there are people over there waiting for a table! I’m like, what? Why are you asking me to leave the table I am also a paying customer. Then the man from the group waiting for the table comes and starts to pull out a chair. So I get up and move again. Finally, I got fed up with the crappy treatment and asked the young girl for a takeaway bag for the rest of my food. She comes back empty handed and asks me if I paid for it - well the receipt was sitting in front of her on the table, so, of course I paid for it. Finally got the takeaway bag and just left. Terrible service........you won’t get many returning customers with at attitude.

We ordered a gourmet burger and a chicken toastie, with a drink each. Both meals were excellent, and set us up for the rest of the day. Recommended

We stopped here for just coffee and cake however lunch options looked great as well. A cute little family run business, this cafe offers scrumptious cake selections with generous servings. Stop here. You won’t be disappointed! Great little independent cafe!

We popped in here for a quick lunch. Very quick service & didn’t have to wait long. Everyone had flatbreads or a toastie & raved about it. I had a cheese scone which was enormous & the best scone I’ve ever had!

Cannot stress enough how welcome we were made to feel with our dog Woody, all staff made an effort to make our dog feel welcome too. He was offered numerous treats and given lots of attention. I was slightly nervous to take him in due to him only being a year old and know he is still a little vocal at times. He wasn't perfect but staff were understanding and we were put at ease so we were able to enjoy our brunch. Food, service and coffee was great. It is fantastic to finally have somewhere local that will allow us to take our dog in with us. Well done Stacks, we will be back soon.

We spotted it after leaving the Orkney ferry. We booked ahead and enjoyed a really nice meal in a lovely decorated bistro. It's a family business and the menu was really well thought out with something for all tastes. Wine was reasonably priced and the service was excellent.

I had a home bake which was nice but I felt was a bit expensive for what it was. The place itself is nicely decorated and staff were nice.

My wife and I visited Stacks on a really cold day in February, having travelled all the way up from Cornwall to see John O'Groats.

This was one of the few places open out of season in John O’Groats, and we loved the cosy ambiance. It had a little fire, board games and lots of homely little touches. We both had the sandwich and soup lunch deal for just under £10 each. The soup was carrot and coriander; I chose a veggie toasted flatbread which tasted freshly baked. My other half went with a macaroni cheese and bacon toastie and really enjoyed it. The drinks selection was good including beers from John O’Groats as well as more quirky/healthy waters, cordials and juices. The menu was well marked up for people with different dietary requirements. There were lots of different cakes, coffees and teas on offer. For lunching or having a tea/coffee in John O’Groats this may be the best place to visit.

Stopped for lunch on a quick visit to Groats, very pleasantly surprised. Lovely fresh lunch made to order, soup and beef flatbreads. Staff were welcoming and pleasant. Will definitely return, one of the best eateries in the county.

Returned here for lunch - still as good as always. The toastie and soup deal is great and the bistro is a nice place to get out of the cold wind, eat nice food and be welcomed by friendly staff.
