Absolutely charming! Really friendly polite service and lovely home prepared food. Quite good choice for us Veggies My brother and l really loved it. We went early Sunday morning so got seated easily but in future l would happily wait for table. Back in time- quaint decor, old fashioned good service, lovely food - what's not to like!

Such a shame. Really was looking forward to this after reading the reviews and seeing the pictures. I get that when you purchase afternoon tea, you purchase an experience and had we got that experience, I could have overlooked the other issues. Firstly, although a quaint building, it felt like I may as well have had afternoon tea in Wetherspoons. Quite closely packed in with people next to you having a fry up etc. It's effectively a slightly upmarket greasy spoon, not the ambience I was hoping for. Like I said, AT is an experience, it's meant to be whimsical and pretty..... Beautiful teapots, crockery all that... Not here I'm afraid. Clear modern tea pots, plain white cup and saucer, and severely chipped cake stands.... On to the food. One round of sandwiches each, consisting of four different flavours, all tasted pleasant enough but we did wonder where the rest was. Two, smallish scones that appeared to be shop bought rather than homemade but I can't say for sure, they certainly don't look like the ones in their website gallery, that were nestled above the rather more generous supply of sandwiches. Tiptree Jam and clotted cream in individual pots. Personal preference, but I much prefer the more personal touch of it being in little dishes rather than massed produced pots. Nice enough taste though. Then the cakes, again their gallery shows lovely big slices of homemade cake whereas in reality it was a bite size piece of flapjack, same size rocky road, bite size square of ginger, the same of carrot and two bite size Victoria sponge pieces. If you go by the pictures on the website, you'll be disappointed.... If you want the experience and ambience you'll be disappointed, if you want to leave feeling like you've had a a decent amount of food, you'll be disappointed. Two rounds of sandwiches, 2 scones and 6 bite size pieces of cake and cups of tea for nearly £40. I certainly couldn't justify it and wouldn't go back. A real shame.

My sister and I popped into here with the intention to have some lunch but was short of time so just asked for tea.Well the owner in an abrupt manner told us that it was lunch time and normally would not just serve tea but this time he would. He spoke to us like we were tel years old ,me and my sister could not believe it but we did stay. If there had been a queue or no other tables available we would have not stayed but there was no queue and several tables available so there was no reason at all for the attitude and arrogant manner. If you don't want people to just have coffee or tea during your opening hours maybe put a notice on your door but after all it is classed as a coffee and tea shop.

My husband and I have visited this place on several occasions and on the whole the food has been acceptable but usually the customer service is hit and miss, however today it was so terrible that we left without even ordering due to the poor attitude of the young person who insisted we sat on a table that has been squashed in near the fire place there is no room to move and you are on top of the other customers, we had asked to sit at one of the other tables that was available but the girl was not interested my husband could hardly move it was totally unacceptable.. We live in Rayleigh and use all the coffee shops cafes to support the local town however we certainly will not be supporting Squires any more

Have visited twice this summer but didn't review initially. This establishment gives the impression of being a traditional tearoom/coffee shop. Small and quaint although not really suitable for large families, children or anyone with mobility aids. Quirky mismatched furniture and "no room to swing a cat" as they say. Toilets very basic, with baby changing facility apparently, although it looks like this would be very awkward to manage. The friendliness of the staff is hit and miss, unfortunately for us, both times we were not made to feel welcome. 1 All day breakfast - Mushrooms not fresh fried, possibly tinned? thinly sliced & watery, tomatoes thinly sliced barely warm, beans looked like they were the last lot from the pan, squashed, dark and gloopy (complained and replaced). Bacon was nice and thick, sausage was tasty. 1 Veggie Muffin - all heaped-on plate basically. !!! cheese on muffins was tasteless. (Same thin mushrooms & tomatoes) the scrambled egg was overcooked and dry. The tea was good, but the coffee was weak, i requested a new cup which was replaced. TBH the portions were just too big. Perhaps if they concentrated on quality not quantity, they would have a better review? Our personal choice for breakfasts, would be whole or halved fried, fresh mushrooms, tomatoes halved and well grilled, so they are soft and sweet, plus reduce the egg portion. It may be ok for people with huge appetites but a little finesse and some tlc on the food would go a long way! Our previous visit was similar although we had sandwiches - looked ok - but tasteless sadly

All staff dealt with the woman with professionalism and patience but were met with rude and abrupt demands. It was uncomfortable to watch and sadly did affect the atmosphere of the cafe. From what we understood this was not the first time this woman has created a scene in the tea room and staff clearly felt uneasy around her. So off we went, the sandwiches were divine, coronation chicken, smoked salmon, 3 cheeses, ham and mustard. The scones, wow, came with a pot of cream each and tiptree jam. The next box had the cakes, oh goodness me, what little beauties they were, macaroons, coffee and walnut, lemon, Victoria sponge, chocolate crunch biscuit, I may have forgotten one! The table of 4 next to us complained because they were getting their food in dribs and drabs so they didn't start eating all together. I think that they need to get more staff or cut down on the amount of tables that they have to cover as they can't seem to cope. What do they do in the height of summer when it;s really busy? Booked an afternoon tea here a while ago which we enjoyed this afternoon. Super attentive-but not intrusive-service which meant we were happily occupied eating and chatting for a couple of hours! Lovely food and a nice atmosphere. Would definitely recommend!

I visited recently with the wife. This is an of fashioned tea room as you would expect. We were served quite quickly and were quite happy. However, when we wished to place a further order we had to wait quite a while. This was in spite of the fact that the place was not crowded at that point. The food and drink were very good quality and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal's.

My friend and I often have a coffee or tea here. There is even a coffee and tea menu! Toasted tea cake is good too. It is not cheap, but nice traditional tea room, although the chairs are rather uncomfortable perhaps they don't want us ladies to chat for too long! Toilets are clean but could do with updating too.

An amazing Afternoon Tea! We booked Squires for 31 family and friends for a family birthday on a Sunday afternoon in September . Nothing was too much trouble for Carl and his team. The tea / coffee and food were plentiful and beautifully presented. Cakes and scones were delicious! Would highly recommend. Thank you so much from us all.

Breakfast was outstanding!! Hot cooked lovely tasty sausage to die for . I was pleasantly surprised when my wife and I decided to pay a visit before going to a meeting . My wife treated me to a scrumptious meal and I was overwhelmed by its taste and arrangement on my plate followed by various cups of tea. Well Done

This place is a delight and continues to get better by the year. The largest choice of teas I have encountered anywhere and the Tea of Life is the perfect blend (which you can also buy as loose tea). Fabulous home-made cakes and food. I do not visit there as much now that I live far away, but when I visit my daughter I have to have a little Squires in my life!

Have been to Squires several times and never had a bad experience. Went there today for lunch with a friend and wasn't disappointed. Their cream teas are lovely and very filling. The service is always excellent. My only minor criticism would be that there wasn't enough jam for the scones, but they were very big scones!

If you have a pram don’t bother and if you only want a drink and not food do not go to this coffee shop. I had family come and stay and thought this would be a lovely quaint place to have a drink and relax with my family which included young children. We were served by the rudest lady who had nothing good to say regarding our visit and made us feel like an inconvenience. When we only asked for a drink we were told in this occasion they would serve us but lunch times are very busy and will only serve you if you ordered food. If we came back another time they would refuse us entry !!! This is a coffee shop not advertised as a restaurant we had already been moved from one table and criticised for not facing out pram the same way as everyone else. I was embarrassed that my local establishment would treat my family this way and would advise anyone to not bother there are plenty of other places in Rayleigh to relax and have a cup of tea without Being chastised for everything you do !!! Very rude and unhelpful would never go back

Went with work colleagues after lunch time. This little gem is always full. But there never seems to be a wait. Magically a table always becomes free. We had jacket potato, omelette and the club sandwich. All very nicely presented and tasty. This place is very quirky & quaint and is well staffed. The tea and coffee selection are amazing for such a small venue. Prices are reasonable and the menu has a good selection of breakfast, lunch, snack, etc. We use it regularly and have no complaints.

Recently we hired the venue for my mums birthday and booked afternoon tea for about 25 people, it was brilliant. Staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly, the afternoon tea was delicious (scones were to die for) and the whole experience was just perfect. Can't recommend this place enough!

Know how cosy the tearooms are so always pick my moments to visit . Latest was 10am on a Sunday . Treated my Mum to a cream tea (brunch!) . Scrumptious warm scones, fresh tea , polite young staff . Same observation as another reviewer that it’s frustrating the staff often need to check a menu for prices working from the docket system - have twice been overcharged and needed to point this out . Small issue but it’s the last interaction at the tearooms & can detract from the tasty bit !
