We stayed overnight and had a three course dinner in the evening. The food was lovely just wish we were giving the option to dine outside as it was so hot in the restaurant. We didn’t realise it was an option until we had finished our meal and headed outside.

We haven't been to the Spread Eagle for many years, but have always had good food. Although we live in Farnham, we thought it was about time to pay a return visit. As one other reviewer said, it was just like visiting an old friend. The minute you walk through the door, you are made welcome. My wife and I both had the beer battered fillet of Hake, and the fish was so fresh (moist and white)We were looked after by Horace, a most debonair and friendly restaurant manager. So we will not be leaving it so long before returning.

It’s like going to see an old friend. I visited the spread eagle when I was 10 (I’m now 71) as I live in the north of England I stay there regularly but not frequently. It is a lovely and very quirky old hotel with loads of character and pleasant helpful and friendly staff and while they may have changed over the last 60 years the ambience and charm remains the same.If you want a clinical and totally sterile environment go and stay in a travel lodge (I do, they have their uses and provide an excellent service when you are travelling) The bedlinen in the spread is Is always spotlessly clean and there are always plenty of of extra bedding extra blankets extra pillows et cetera.. most rooms do not have a fridge for reasons of space although they do have an espresso machines, fresh milk is usually delivered to your door withinMinutes of you asking for it.For dinner the menu is limited but I don’t think I have ever eaten there without having to debate with myself which starter I will have or which maincourse. Credit often we work it out because my sister will have a dish that was my second choice or vice versa and that way we get to taste each others.Food is always beautifully cooked the wine list has something for everyone(Except me I don’t drink!)There are a couple of niggles which do nothing to spoil my stay there, as before animals are allowed in the dining room (in transit) and I’m not sure whether one should live and let live or not. There were minor niggles with the decor which had just been redone throughout, little things like splashes of gloss white paint on the tiles in the bathroom and on the towel rail. Didn’t spoil my stay but why let it happen? Get the decorator back to clean up after himself!I don’t think there is anything the spread could do it would put me off going there they have some terrific staff and I would recommend it to anyone

The menu is not extensive but what they offer along with a few specials is lovely. We started with a mushroom macaroni cheese, delicious. My husband had the tomato soup which went down well. For the main course he had the chateau briand steak which was cooked to perfection. I had his tomato as he doesn't like them and added this to my twice baked soufflé, it added a whole new dimension to the already lovely flavour. Cheese and biscuits followed, sadly no crackers available. A truly lovely meal

The Spread Eagle is the most welcoming place to go, if you are lucky enough to stay it is very much home from home! Prior to dinner we enjoyed a leisurely drink in the bar and then went and chose our meal from the menu, the warm, homemade rolls were the perfect start followed by incredible 3 course served at a pleasant timing not rushed or waiting just enough time to enjoy each course before the next one arrived. The service is friendly and professional which makes you feel comfortable and relaxed. An after dinner drink with your coffee in the bar is the perfect way to finish your delicious meal.

We met up with my partner’s family for lunch. We were promptly served drinks in the bar lounge and given the days menus to order. All of us chose the salmon starter followed by pieces of cod for two of us, - 3 chose the vegetarian risotto and we all had the Eaton mess for desert. The food was very good but such small portions particularly for the cod - just 3 small battered pieces. The service was good but a bill of £70 (including drinks) for my partner and I while the rest of the family paid over £100 for the three of them is high for lunch particularly as the portions are so small. The restaurant is quirky with Christmas puddings hanging over the fire place. If the hotel is aiming for ostentatious and pretentious at least put white table clothes on the tables to match the nicely starched napkins.

We took my mother for a birthday lunch and were very disappointed with several aspects of the experience. i) Access: despite checking, there are steps into the building and these steps didn't even have a handrail !; ii) Waiting time: the lunch service was very slow indeed; iii) Constant Disturbance: the restaurant is a thoroughfare to the hotel with people constantly parading through the centre of the restaurant with suitcases and in states of undress to the spa; iv) Food: whilst certain dishes were good, my mother's sirloin steak was frankly dreadful - three off cut pieces of meat one cm thick, tough, cold and overcooked, I wonder how the chef had the front to send the plate out and the price at £43 for her three course meal was absurd !! To be fair the bill was substantially reduced without my having to ask but what a pity. The hotel is lovely and the restaurant setting historically interesting. With a little effort (like complying with the law about providing disabled access) and a shake up on the service and patchy food quality this restaurant could provide a wonderful experience.

We recently booked to have afternoon tea at this hotel. On arrival, we were ushered to what the staff termed the 'conservatory', which is more like a lean-to, that functions as the thoroughfare for any guests walking to their rooms, the pool or the spa. Many of these guests were wearing towelling robes as they strode past guests seated and having afternoon tea. Being closer to the pool end of the 'conservatory', we could also smell the chlorine emanating from the pool. There was no heating on, it was raining and cold outside and it was therefore very chilly sitting in this area. The view from the conservatory is onto the carpark. When the tea finally arrived, other guests having complained about waiting too long, it was luke warm. The food was acceptable though and those serving us pleasant. We learnt on departure that there is a lounge, which looked cosy and warm, where 'non residents' of the hotel are welcome, so why on earth aren't those paying for an afternoon tea treated with equal welcome and respect by being housed in the lounge? Residents of that hotel should show respect and not parade in towelling robes past those paying for their afternoon tea. We did note that some residents, obviously possessing better standards, were clothed appropriately and carrying a bag probably containing their swimming gear, etc. Perhaps the hotel can ask their guests, some of whom were wearing their robes in a loose fitting manner, to refrain from doing so. Other people there for afternoon tea were also appalled and expressed their opinions to us.

I booked the restaurant some weeks ago for my father in laws 80th Birthday. My brother in law was flying in from the states and my husbands grandmother, who is 101 was being driven from Brighton. We live in Wiltshire so we chose the Spread Eagle as easy for everyone to meet. It is a 1 1/2 journey from Wiltshire so we set off at 11.30. On the way over I asked my brother in law to ring and say that we were now 10 instead of 8. They told him that they didn't have a booking for me. I used to go to the Spread Eagle years ago and was confident that when I explained the circumstances of everyone meeting up they would move heaven and earth to help. I rang them back and they couldn't have been less helpful. As you can imagine I was fairly distraught. 10, relatively old people, with nowhere to go for an 80th Birthday lunch and I can assure you that I booked!! I will not be returning. Very sad that the management has changed to that extent. Judging from some of the reviews I have now read on Trip Advisor, it was probably a lucky escape. We arrived for a special birthday lunch at this lovely hotel at the time they asked us to come - 12.45, and sat down at the table. Nobody came for ages then the man who seemed to be in charge came and offered us water. We saw the table next to us had a jug of water and said yes, but we were brought a bottle of water, already undone. (At my request they took it off the bill later), but nobody gave us a wine-list and it was about half an hour after we arrived before anyone came to take our food order (we still hadn't been offered wine). So I asked if we could order wine and he went off, then came back with a wine-list, which he left with us and came back a full ten minutes later. We then ordered both our wine and our food. It was another half hour before either of them came - the wine. About five minutes after that, the starters arrived. Quality ok, but not as good as it always used to be at this hotel's restaurant. We finished our starters and they eventually came and cleared those. It was ANOTHER half hour before our main course arrived .... for two of us. Nothing for the third. He said it was just coming. After about ten minutes, the third arrived and at last we could eat ... but it was only lukewarm, including the one straight from the kitchen! The main course was very disappointing - minimal portions. I had the been stroganoff. It was very bland (no taste of paprika or sour cream at all ... and the fat had not been cut off the meat, so horrible to find it in my mouth! Consequently, there was very little beef in the 'stroganoff! By this time, all the people who had arrived for lunch after us had eaten their two or three courses, had coffee and gone. Nobody came to collect our plates, in fact nobody came into the restaurant at all, so at 3pm, having not been offered desserts of coffee, we walked out of the restaurant, just as a young man waiter came through and we asked for coffee in the conservatory. That took another half hour, at which point he apologised and told us he'd been the only one there! When I went to pay at reception, the receptionist explained that one of the chefs was off sick and it was the manager's day off. It's such a shame to see this lovely place go downhill. I'd like to come again one day and find it back to its former good standards.

The restaurant was quite busy when we visited midweek but service was prompt but not rushed and all staff were well trained, polite and friendly. The restaurant is located in an historic hotel close to the centre of the country town of Midhurst and there is plenty of car parking on site. The restaurant area was spotlessly clean and comfortable. The menu choice was excellent with a fine dining menu in addition to one that was more modestly priced. The choice of wines was equally good with some reasonably priced offers in addition to wines for the more demanding customer. Overall the superb old world charm made this a very enjoyable occasion and we will certainly visit again despite the distance from home. We were amused when we left to go home to see that the quick food outlet a few yards down the road was almost empty whereas the more expensive and traditional hotel restaurant was clearly very popular.

I usually post a review if somewhere is either very good or very poor. In the case of the Spread Eagle, it was both. The £10 lunch offer was very good value, with two of the most flavoursome courses I've had in months. However, we waited an eternity for someone to take our dessert order, whilst adjoining tables were cleared and relaid, we sat with the menus in front of us. Eventually, due to time constraints we ordered coffee and petits fours. We waited once again for too long, for a cafetiere of mediocre coffee and a jug of hot milk which cost £7.50. At the same time we asked for the bill, and that didn't come either. The restaurant was not busy, being a midweek lunchtime, but front of house seemed to have lost interest in us after the first two courses.Such a shame, because otherwise we would certainly have visited again.

A group of friends and I regularly enjoy dining at the Historic Hotels Group including the Spread Eagle. Their £10 lunch voucher is usually exceptional value and allows us to have a fine dining experience on a budget. We possibly made the mistake of booking for a Monday - I suspect that supplies were strained! One item, a fish risotto was the choice of two of our party. However, the restaurant had no risotto rice (!!!) and so the offer was amended to fish with pasta and cheese. The starter of a fishcake was decent and tasty. I ordered a steak with a sauce, with a hefty £3.50 supplement - this was the best dish of the menu. Nice juicy steak. But the ladies who ordered the fish "risotto" got a dish that was similar to my "use whatever is left in the larder" creations. Nice fish, on a bed of cheesy pasta - a rather basic dish for this kind of venue. It tasted fine, but presentation wise was a bit like a Tesco Ready Meal. My other friend ordered gnocchi, but I am not sure that any gnocchi arrived on her plate but instead some mini roast potatoes with the advertised wild mushrooms. A bit disappointed. Service was very patchy. Staff seemed harried and had to be reminded about more bread and butter. We were barely acknowledged on arrival and the welcome was lukewarm. I appreciate we were not high spenders, but offering people a special priced meal I presume is a way of bringing in repeat, higher value business. We decided against a pudding as the choice was not that exciting and took our coffee and tea in the lounge. This came with "petit fours" - when these arrived we received some pieces of chocolate truffle and some tiny meringues like the icing from Midget Gems. Not the classic petit fours you might expect. The waiter said this was the cheaper option at £3.75 per head than the coffee and biscuits! A second order of tea yielded a teapot with hot water and no tea bag. The waiter then rushed off and returned with a tea bag and commented that "the teapot is still hot"....obviously had not heard about the concept of using boiling water to infuse tea with. I firmly requested a fresh pot and this was done, but again it felt like it was a bother and a bit of a rush. My impression was that there were not enough staff to cover the restaurant and the lounge areas and that service was stretched. We love the surroundings and ambiance, but the food was not as expected, other than my steak, and the service really let it down. I have stayed here and dined a la carte but on this occasion it felt like we were second class citizens.

We can warmly recommend the Spread Eagle Hotel Restaurant. The food is excellent. Service is friendly, efficient and professional. THe surroundings are beautiful - a historic hotel in the heart of the beautiful small town of Midhurst. It is also reasonably priced for its location.

In another review, my fiancé and I visited the Spread Eagle to make use of the hotel and spa facilities, this review is focused on the restaurant. We visited during the week (a Wednesday) and the restaurant was very quiet with only us and a few other groups in the place. The dining room has a lot of character with low beams and artifacts on the walls. Staff were extra attentive but were never intrusive at any point. The set menu had just around the right amount of choice for us and we both went for different starters and mains. I particularly enjoyed the monkfish which was meaty but also light. All the food was well cooked and well presented. My fiancé’s rib of beef fell off the bone and was absolutely delicious. We normally share desserts but found ourselves enjoying the mousse and crème brule too much that we forgot to offer each other a bit! We finished off dinner with a tea/coffee and a dessert wine (added supplement). The only down-side (which is very minor) is the through route to rooms from reception runs through the dining room. Whilst this didn’t disturb us whilst we were next to a window, I imagine if we were sat near to the centre of the room it could get slightly annoying. We have already started to look at possible dates to return and fully expect to take advantage of one of the packages from the hotel offering the 3-course dinner as part of it.

Went yesterday for our Christmas presents to each other. Although we enjoyed ourselves the roast we ordered was pretty poor. The beef was thick and tough and as everything had been served on the plate the gravy had set before it got to us. The cheese board seemed like it had been prepared the day before And left out all night. Just a bit disappointing really.

We met for lunch with my fiancé's sister and her husband who made the booking. We had the lunch voucher (available on the web site and the waiter was happy for me to simply show it on my iPhone) and at £14 a head this is tremendous value for a 3 course lunch - choice of 3 starters, 4 mains and 2 desserts or cheese. Cafetière with at least two cups each plus petit fours £3.50. All courses were very tasty - not massive portions but perfectly adequate for the grey generation! Our service was very attentive and not rushed. We had coffee in the lounge. The hotel and restaurant has a lot of character.

Good welcome, nice table, attentive staff initially. Starter, two edible, a soup and smoked salmon (charged extra), two second rate crab dishes, looked terrible, tasted not much better. Main course, after a very long wait, one vegetarian, edible, two duck, one lamb dish, all chef's specials, complete rubbish, presentation awful, duck uneatable, lamb which I ate truly second rate. Everyone then avoiding us like the plague. The young bar steward eventually cleared the plates, I caught him in passing. He brought us the sweet menu. I remonstrated with the manager, we paid for what we had and left.

We went for lunch, and were sat on a table right in the walk way through to the hotel with people pushing past with suit cases. The starter was fine, and then they bought out our main course, Five of us all ordering the same thing. The so called skinny fries were not cooked through, when we told the waitress the Manager/head waitress herd an looked at us all as though we were lying, she did then agree and took all five plates away, the meals were then returned with the fries cooked. We were not given back the plates of food randomly therefor each of us having another's plate of food with either new fries or probable reheated fries put back on the plates. (Disgusting)

We went for Sunday lunch for a treat. The restaurant has bags of atmosphere, very charming old world as you would expect, plenty of space between tables, and has a light and airy feeling looking out into the conservatory and gardens. I can imagine it would also feel quite snug in winter with a large open fireplace. The waiting staff were perfect, very polite but not condescending. Starters were not very large - but the main course is huge and a decent sized dessert so no worries if you are feeding a hungry man. A strange mix of presentation - some dishes were very well presented others looked very basic (eg prawn cocktail which tasted delicious looked as if it had been thrown into a breakfast bowl ). The main course vegetables were basic and not great quality but everything else delicious. Four of us ate the 3 course meal with a bottle of wine and two further glasses of wine . The whole bill was £150 inc tip which we thought was very reasonable. You can have coffee served outside in the conservatory or garden if you wish. Overall a very pleasant laid back experience and makes a good change from the traditional pub lunch.

Wholesome fare but not the fine dining experience the billing might have suggested. If pitched properly then the quality of the food etc would have scored higher. Accidents happen in restaurants, but staff have an opportunity to impress with their remediation - I would score the staff at about 6 out of 10 on this occasion: passable but little effort to make up for inconvenience and discomfort caused. With half a pitcher of wine in one's lap and the other half swimming around one's starter, one might expect something over and above replacement of what you had left of your starter.

This is a fairly upscale hotel with dining & spa. The spa is very pleasant with an old style garden outdoor courtyard area with sunloungers, great in good weather as you can get away from the chlorine (I'm not normally a spa-dweller, but enjoyed my visit here!). Treatments such as massage are available and these are excellent, the staff are really professional and the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly. Treatments not cheap but pretty good value. The hotel is in a beautiful very old building but the room facilities are nice. It is not super smart, but tasteful, I liked the style. It is probably worth paying the extra for a superior room (...if you're going on a spree, go the whole hog, including the postage!). Undoubtedly the biggest plus of this hotel is the staff, they are all highly professional, courteous and friendly - there is a nice vibe here, which speaks of good managment. I found some of the evening meal options slightly over-intense on the seasoning for my taste, but two breakfasts were both just great; again, with wonderful service.

We ended with one of us enjoying the lemon creme brûlée then coffee with petit fore. The dining room was busy but the staff went about their work quietly and efficiently. I had been meaning to come here for a long time as lots of friends had recommended it. We decided to try and come for Mothering Sunday but it was fully booked so we came the day before for Afternoon Tea.Although the setting is beautiful and atmospheric the tea was a bit disappointing. The sandwiches were dry, like they had been made and then left out uncovered. The cakes were not very exciting; lemon drizzle, chocolate and fruit but the scones were excellent. My daughter said they were the best she had ever had. The service was also excellent and we did get extra scones all included in the same price.I would try and come again, maybe for dinner or lunch.

This was our 3rd time here and once again we had to send the food back. The steak we ordered Med/rare and arrived Med/well, the seared calves liver had been cooked so quickly that the outside was done well but the inside was completely uncooked. I am a huge fan of rare liver but this was raw. When the food came back the liver was superb but the steak was still medium. We also had the tomato soup for starter which was on the verge of being too salty to eat. On a good note the staff were all very good especially the young barman in the pub, this is a guy that is worth every penny and should be commended for his enthusiasm, customer service and knowledge of his profession. i wish he worked for me. Give the guy a huge pay rise.

I took my mother here for afternoon tea as a Mothers Day treat. The hotel and setting is simply beautiful, so quaint and English. We arrived a little early for our tea (13 minutes) I enquired at main reception if it were possible to be seated already. The receptionist was lovely and said I'm sure a table has been set up ready, she asked us to follow her, we passed a young waiter and waitress, the receptionist asked if the table was ready, the young waiter said yes, as we walked past (and within my ear shot) he said but they are very early! This I thought was rude and unnecessary! We were seated at a lovely table opposite the fire, and left to peruse the tea menu. We ordered our tea and some tap water, which the waiter forgot and so we had to ask twice for. When the tea stand came it was a little underwhelming. I have a major sweet tooth, so was disappointed to see slabs of cake on a tier instead of some lovely little pastries. The scones were to die for ! Simply divine ! The sandwiches were delicious, they made them all on brown bread as per request which was greatly appreciated. The clotted cream was amazing and the cherry jam lovely. I have had many afternoon teas and I do expect better pastries than slabs of cake. For the price I had expected something a little fancier. Also I expect the plates to be changed after the sandwiches, my mother had to use her saucer for the cakes and scones, as she had egg mayonnaise all over her plate. The young waiter was nowhere in sight! I wonder if we caught the young waiter on an off day ! Maybe a little more training on politeness, and etiquette !

we booked a table for eight for a family lunch today and were asked after we were seated if we had a voucher, when we said no we were then treated like fools and charged £18 for a very meager two course meal made with the cheapest ingredients that the rest of the restaurant were charged £10 for. There was no a la carte and the only other choice was a three course menu for £38, as I had a very bad feeling by then this was duly declined. No one likes to be treated like this and I certainly won't go there again.

My partner and I stayed here a couple of weeks ago ( friday night). This is our second time here and we both love it. The food is superb and the staff are friendly and helpful. Our room was on the small side ( we stayed in a suite previously). I have never reviewed a hotel before but what happened to us on the Friday evening still bugs me!! We were seated at our table for our evening meal and the restaurant was rather busy. I noticed a free table by the window and asked the waiter if the table was free and if we could possibly move. He politely informed me the table was reserved and asked if he could get us champagne from the bar to which we replied, yes please. Now, the waiter made this sound as though he would bring us a glass of champagne each as he couldn't accommodate our request to sit by the window. We soon discovered this was not the case when the champagne was added to our bill at £16 per glass. Not wanting a fuss, we decided to let it go. But i regret not speaking up about it at the time. Just be warned! That aside, we love this hotel and will go back soon for another luxurious break.

We arrived for our afternoon tea which was booked with a voucher for my birthday. We were shown onto the bar and told someone would be with us shortly after a while the bar person started putting a rack of different teas on the table. I then asked if this was where we were going to be sitting and he said yes i said I expected to sit in the restaurant area for a formal tea. He then moved us to the restaurant to a table which was not laid up. The restaurant manager then told us we could not sit in the restaurant area as they wanted to lay it up for the evening. I then spoke to the manager in reception and he said he would sort it out. We were then taken back to the bar area and a table had been laid for us. There was hardly any staff on duty and the restaurant manager then seemed to serve us and be doing everything. The fires were not made up until just before we were ready to leave. The manager tried to help my dissapointment with complimentary drinks but I am afraid it was not the afternoon tea experience I had expected and would not recommend it.

We went for a family lunch with 25 including 8 kids and had a private room which my Father had booked about 9months ago to try to ensure a nice birthday celebration for my stepmother. The hotel didn't seem very kitted up for kids with 3 glasses at every place setting, although we had ordered food in advance they rechecked it all and still managed to get four or five dishes wrong, more chaos with pudding. Roast dinners with meat which was just okay, cheap veg (red cabbage and swede, no greens) and fingerprints on every choc pudding slice. Sure the decor and ambience is nice and to be fair my salmon was nicely cooked but overall a big thumbs down.

Went as a couple for our wedding anniversary on a special deal Sunday to Monday. The Spreadeagle is a 14th century hotel with a lovely fascinating history. Ask about Gorings Eagle taken from the Reichstag by American officers who had stayed at the hotel, and Gorings visit to Goodwood with Ribbentrop a few weeks before the start of War. They must have known and were surveying the country estates they might live in after the invasion! The room we booked was one rung up from the basic deal, at an extra £40, and was a lovely newly refurbished luxurious room with excellent bathroom called The Lawns. The spa is open on a Sunday and the deal of £249 for bed breakfast and dinner included £30 towards a massage. I had a 55 minute full body massage at £75 delivered by the amazing Steph. The best massage I have had in years. The swim in the pool the next day was delightful. The dinner included in the package was excellent- smoked salmon of very high quality, the home made blinis with sour cream and onion filling, just divine, and the double cheddar soufflé and mangetouts were to die for. We paid extra for drinks and the massage of course. Place was spotless and ambience superb. We were also provided with a reserved car park space.
