Spoken Cafe Bar in East Devon

Good service and a good atmosphere, a bit let down by the food. Had a gyros that wasn't really a gyros more of a Lebanese flatbread with stuff on, couldn't fold it with out it falling apart. Son had a pizza that was just a flatbread with some tomato puree on and cheese. It was fine but expected a bit more.

Needs one or two more staff on a Friday night. The waiter handled it well but there was a long wait for our food which was only OK when it came. My burger bun had been grilled but it was just tough and burned. I'm sure the bun was nicer before it was put near the grill. I'd go back for a drink but will go elsewhere for food.

Drinks only...nicely done out place, cool vibe! Parked round the corner. Outside seating galore in the nice square centre of Exmouth. Table service, the young staff very friendly and efficient. Reasonable pricing too. Will go back next time in town!

Went on a Saturday night in November - first impression coming in from the dark was of light, warmth and colour - great decor! Staff are lovely & friendly, food was delicious - we had gyros and both thoroughly enjoyed - perfect size portions - didn't feel ill when we left! I thought prices were good in relation to what you pay for a main in most places.. It was quite loud so maybe not come on Sat nighr if you prefer quieter; however, we loved it - a must try if you love a vibrant atmosphere & mediterranean food.

Fantastic Sunday roast, really tasty, vegetables cooked to perfection and really nice cauliflower cheese. Good portion size, along with great service! Thank you.

The drink selection was amazing and the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome, talk to us and advise. Highly recommend this place, we only had a few drinks but would love to eat here next time we visit!

Its ok for a drink but wouldn't stop for anything more, I've heard friends saying that the Tapas are good but after a small selection of them with a couple of drinks being presented with a bill for over £100, not that great really.

We sat outside in the evening as it was a lovely hot day. Lots of seating and really busy with people drinking. Lovely area outside with fairy lights. It felt like we were in Italy. The waiting staff were good considering the amount of people there. The only downside for us was the food. I had the prawn and chilli linguini. There were only a few tiny prawns and it was quite bland. My husband had a burger which he said was ok. We also had a jug of Sangria that didn’t taste like it had any alcohol in it. Such a shame as such a great location.

Really tentative friendly staff and a great place to go for a drink! Food on the other hand is very poor quality so we would eat elce where in the future.

The food is great, quite delicious. We loved the roast lamb, the portion was great for 2. The place has a excellent vibe and the staff is kind and very efficient. We had a lovely meal.

Visited for the first time in two years, new chef. Prawns not deveined, ring of chorizo which was not chorizo. cocktails that were tragically watered down. A very confused menu and a waiter who didn’t care for feedback. Don’t visit

Went here for something to eat on my birthday. The weather was nice, so we sat outside we got flatbreads, which were amazing, so simple but tasty highly recommend . The truffle parmesan chips are the best ! We had cocktails which were lovley too ! Overall really happy with our meal and drinks , service was good too staff really freindly!

Been here many times before, however today when we went, the menu has been drastically reduced, and when items ordered, they did not match what was on the menu, service was good but that’s about it, go here for drinks but forget the food

Way to ruin my 30th wedding Anniversary Spoken .! Made an 830 booking to be told on arrival that couldn’t be the case because the kitchen closed at 8 . We did get seated and served food but I didn’t need the rude attitude on arrival . Word to the wise Spoken , don’t use open table booking’s system if it doesn’t match your kitchen hours .

Visited on a Sunday expecting food. No food served on this day. Food served only three days a week. Cocktails were packed with ice. Consequently hardly any cocktail.

Evening meal. The ordering system was straightforward, you go to the hatch outside, but it was slow as only one order could be taken at a time. We had tapas: sardines, hummus, croquets and patatas bravas. It tasted delicious, however £6.50 for what turned out to be one sardine wasn’t great value at all. We also had drinks, I wanted a decaffeinated espresso martini but sadly they didn’t do decaf coffee so couldn’t make one. Nice enough.

Authentic tapas, as good as you would get in Spain. Pork Belly fab croquettes and patatas bravas all excellent

We were really impressed with Spoken. The staff were good, the good great - and excellent value for money - and the atmosphere welcoming. A good range of vegetarian small plates was really pleasing for us. We've been a couple of times and each was just a good (and we would definitely go again) but it can get a bit noisy at the bar early Saturday evening. If that's something that might bother you just go a little earlier or later.

Booked food for 3.30 weeks in advanced , the day we booked we received a reminder about our booking. Arrived and it was closed, staff unlocked the door and said we are not opened until 4 and kitchens not opened u til 5pm. We explained about our booking and they said it wasn’t their fault. No apology or explanation. We decided since it had such good reviews we would return once it opened. We arrived back, gave our name for the booking and told sit wherever. Sorry we returned, rude staff, bad food. Not sure if the staff were having a bad day, but considering there was 10 people in the restaurant, I would have expected a decent level of service. £120+ for drinks and bad tapas, I wouldn’t return.

Second time we've been there. Food and service was great!

I booked a table for the Mothers Day brunch and wasn’t too sure what to expect as I know it’s different to the usual menu. We were both incredible impressed with the food and the variety that was available with Mediterranean twists on brunch classics like chorizo eggs Benedict with Smokey paprika hollandaise sauce which was amazing! The dessert was incredibly delicious (lovely almond and orange cake with creme fraiche and loads of honey!) and I really hope that these brunch items are here to stay. Very reasonable price too and the service was fab. If the brunches stay on the menu you’ll have a very regular customer!

We went to spoken this evening booked a table for 4,asked for a regular table not height seating.when we got there there we we were given a table with stool high seating even though one of our party had difficulties getting on the high seats and another was 70 years of age however we accepted that they had no other seating.food was lovley but when we came to settle the bill we had already rounded the bill to leave a tip but they had added one£3 as well! We did question this but she told us she could do anything about it. George come back! The menu on line is not the one on offer, service isn’t great either.wehave been coming to spoken since forever but so disappointed tonight.

Dropped in for dinner. Really friendly. Great atmosphere. Was lovely to see it busy midweek. Food was fabulous and great value. Thoroughly recommend.

Disappointing experience tonight. We had booked table for 8.30. Ordered and had our mains went to order dessert and the waitress told us that the kitchen had closed at 9pm. Asked to speak to the manager and she then said that the kitchen wasn't closed but they had ran out of most deserts - only ice cream and the chocolate brownies were available. The food we had was very good. One of us had the burger and another the Moroccan chicken both of which were excellent. I had the tapas option which was also very good (wild mushrooms croquettes and the hummus with pitta bread).A more generous serving of mayonnaise would have been appreciated the serving I received was tiny. From 9pm onwards the music became louder not at all conducive to a relaxed meal and conversation. In future I'll revisit during the afternoon not for dinner in the evening Toilet was also an issue - no toilet paper provided in the ladies and no soap in the mens.

I recently went here with my partner to celebrate our anniversary and we had a wonderful time. Immediate thoughts when walking in are that the atmosphere and welcome from the staff were fantastic. The food was both of great quality and also not overpriced like other similar restaurants (I'm usually reluctant to have tapas for the latter reason - but I can safely say that eating here won't cost you the earth). The wine choice was also top notch 👌 would thoroughly recommend.

Well, talk about customer service.....this venue says its open from 12 mid-day to 11 in the evening, but on the 1st December at 2pm it was closed....not a notice of why on the door or any hint of a problem....this is NOT the way to treat regular customers....not impressed

Staff are rude, Table service is frustrating as staff don't even serve you for up to 20mins. Then take another 20mins to get your drinks. Food is over priced for the portions and not enough options. This place just seems to care about money

Good atmosphere and great food.

Whilst I total appreciate the complexities of Brexit and our service industry, sadly, the kitchen can prepare a descent meal, front of house can be attentive, BUT, when your server/waiting staff are rude, demonstrating clearly their intent to go home, then all of the above is, sadly, a waste of time and energy!

The place is nice and has a cool atmosphere and vibe, however our experience was a bit all over the place. We ordered 2 of the rump steaks, they first had to go away and check the price as there was confusion on whether it should be the price on the menu. Then they needed to check whether it comes with fries or salad or if you get everything as it says on the menu. Basically they had to keep double checking the menu and what we were ordering as it seems like there was some discrepancy between the menu and what the manager and the chef wanted. It should be as per menu or the menu shouldn't be used. Finally got our steaks and then there was no steak knives. We were literally told good luck. The plate was crowded, food was bland, no seasoning of the steak. No salt or pepper on the table or asked if we wanted anything, just left to it with normal knives. Very disappointed, other food may well be good but when you push the boat out and go for the steak you expect a bit better. Waitress was really nice and seemed to be doing best she could with a bad / confusing situation.

I visited Spoken last night for dinner and drinks with a friend, it was so lovely! a great atmosphere, talkative friendly waitress, everyone looked relaxed, very delicious food (thanks kitchen staff!), and great choice of cocktails, didn't feel rushed at all we were welcomed to take our time. Such a little gem in Exmouth :-) thanks guys!

Really nice, lovely place with friendly, helpful staff. The place looks great and it was a pleasant surprise to find a place like this in Exmouth… The food was good and decent but I think, with little extra attention, it could be better. We ordered three dishes. The risotto was lovely but the artichoke and mushrooms clearly came from a jar… with fresh ingredients it would have been so much better. The peppers stuffed with couscous: again, amazing flavours, all spot on… but the couscous was dry. Finally, the shell-on large prawns: cooked to perfection, not over cooked. My only issue with it (but this is something very personal and subjective) was the sauce - it had such a strong flavour (chilli) when the prawns have such a delicate one. It’s like when people put ketchup on food (sorry for the comparison), everything tastes of ketchup… Prices: reasonable. Someone in the comments complained about paying £8.50 for three large prawns. Would you really want to eat in a place where they cost, I don’t know, £1.50 each?? You get what you pay for, no exceptions. It feels like 5 stars is a bit too much but as there is no 4.5 we thought rounding it up is fairer than rounding it down. We will absolutely be back and this place is so much worth of a visit!

Had an enjoyable tapas selection on a busy Saturday night that was washed down with Mahou beer. It is worth reserving a table in advance. Can get a little noisy (but then it is a Saturday night). A mix of people dining and some just drinking.

Love it! Just had everything on the menu! Edit: just been back after a year. Still fantastic. Had the open sandwiches (meat and vegan) which were sensational. The quality of ingredients, the variety of salads, the crispness of the sweet potato fries.

Went in for drinks (cocktails). Great atmosphere, very friendly staff and good prices. We will return here when back in Exmouth.

Good food selection and drinks.

When we went to order food and drinks, the server refused to process our 2 for 1 cocktails saying that deal was no longer available. All branding remained the same and included the 2 for 1 deal and we went on a Sunday where the 2 for 1 deal applied all day. It was just poor service and the server just argued with us instead of acknowledging their misrepresentation.

We went to Spoken as part of a works gathering and weren't disappointed. The tapas food was lovely and plentiful. Fantastic range of drinks and the staff were great offering choices and advice. The outside area is fantastic in nice weather and again the staff are very attentive. Will absolutely be calling in again.

Excellent food selection...tapas style very good. Gin selection excellent, can recommend Wicked Wolf. Staff friendly, efficient and knowledgeable.

What a fab place! Arrived 30 mins before the kitchen closed, so apologies to the chef, but the food was amazing and we really enjoyed it!
