Don't judge a book by its cover! This Indian restaurant has a splendid service and excellent food. We went there as a family of 6, got seating earlier than what we booked for, and the waiter did everything he could to guide us to our choice in food and spiciness. It was all perfect and a really good experience, even with our two youngest children (7 and 8 years of age) did not fancy spicy food and settled for basmati and nan only. Bring you own alcoholic drinks - and buy softdriks in the restaurant. We'd go again any time we're back in London.

The curry is not greasy which is good. But both meat dishes we had were very lime flavoured to the point it was not pleasant to eat (lime was the main flavour of the dish and it definitely shouldn't have been for a chicken dhansak). It also took half an hour to get the popadoms we ordered straight away with only one table having other people on. There are much nicer places in the area for less or similar money. Maybe a bad night based on other trip advisor reviews but not sure.

On gritty Chapel Market street near a tattoo parlor and a hardware store is some of the best South Asian cooking in London. They will let you try the dishes and adjust the heat to your level. Some creative Indian and Bangladeshi going on here. This isn't a gleaming, see-and-be-seen diva hangout. Atmosphere isn't what is offered here. But the food is outstanding. Even a routine dish like Dahl sag is taken to a new level. No unidentifiable mush here. Instead, it is an appealing collaboration of firm lentils and fresh ingredients full of bright flavor. Fresh. We came here the other week for some proper curry, and boy did we get it! The place is a little dated décor-wise, but I’m there for the food. If you want a hip place go to Masala Zone down Upper Street (incidentally the poorest curry I’ve had in a long time). The other comments about the manager being a bit pushy - I think they’re misinterpreting that as I only saw him as hard-working and passionate, a genuinely nice person. Sure, he goes out of his way asks questions and figure out what kind of food you generally like, and he might make a couple of suggestions, but with such a large menu I appreciated that. Keeping some roti’s back while we were eating so they stayed hot was a lovely touch, and the food was authentic, decent Bangladeshi food. The bhindi was really tasty and the lamb (something) rich, tender and well spiced. The pricing is very, very good, especially the set menu, but I’d say go for the specials. BYOB drives pricing down too for those who like a tipple with their spices. Now that I’m writing this review I think I’ll go again tonight!

Spices is one of my favourite restaurants. The setting is totally no-frill, but the food is very good. My friend had a vague idea of what she wanted but couldn't find it on the menu, so the owner just put something together for her which included all the ingredients she had named. You can decide yourself how spicy you want your meal to be and are allowed to taste the sauce when it's brought to the table and if it's too spicy or not enough it goes back in the kitchen! My food was amazing as well and just as spicy as I wanted it. I will go back and tell all my friends about it. You get great food at a really good price and the final bill is never exorbitant as it's BYO alcohol!

MORE AT OpenTable

I love this place! I came here no less than 10 times, with many people of any ethnicity and background, and it was always great! I live in London, ten minutes walking from Spices, so I have never felt the urge to write a review - it's something I do sometimes when I travel. But today I read the most unfair review and I thought I had to have my say too. In the review I read today, the 'waiter' was described as 'pushy' and the food as 'sloppy'. Nothing so inexplicably far from reality - but everyone has a bad day every now and again, so I guess it must be that... Let's be clear on this: I've been here no less than 10 times and it was always great! The 'pushy' waiter (he is the owner and a very nice person to speak to) not only knows the menu by heart but is also happy to talk you through the jungle of at least 50 options it contains by asking you what flavours you like the most. He then identifies the best dish for you (although you can obviously order á la carte if that's what you prefer). He generally starts by asking you to choose the meat: chicken, lamb or prawns; then he asks you if you prefer more of a 'tomato' kind of taste, a lemony taste or a creamy taste; then he goes on with a number of additional sub-options, until he works out the best dish for you. And the best thing is that if you don't like it, he is happy to take it back! (To be clear, I have never sent back a dish or seen anyone doing so.) I don't know what is meant by 'pushy' but I wish I could get the same type of service in every restaurant! Also, when I went to Spices with my mother (who is not exactly fluent in English) he surprised everyone by speaking Italian, which was quite impressive. As regards the food, well... taste is subjective, right? But what makes me wonder about the review I read is that I came to Spices with a quite significant and diverse sample of people and - trust me - I never heard but praises... Given the place is also quite cheap (yes, it's got them all!) I would definitely give it a try...

I've been living and working in Angel for some time now, and it's surprised me how few good Indian restaurants there are in the area. Fortunately Spices is a refreshing change - Ali makes a conscious effort to make sure any dish you order is tailored to your needs - if you need it more spicy they can easily do that, in fact they almost let you design your own dish. Decor & service wise, it's like your standard Indian restaurant, but then it's all about the food in these places. Definitely worth a visit though.

Today was the 5th or 6th time I have eaten at Spices. Each time, the food is constantly good, the service is amazing with the manager? being the sort of customer focused person that deserved to make this restaurant a roaring success. Today, realised that they accept Tastecard for 241 so this made my rating go from a 4 to a 5.Is it the best curry I have had? No, but in terms of quality, value and it being a few minutes from home, this could be my favourite curry house in the UK. (This is a really high praise as I lived in Bradford for 6 years eating Pakistani/North Indian curries on a daily basis, and have visited a number of the michelin star restaurants in London including Quilon and Benares)I work in the industry and watching the manager in action, he is everything good about a service. The number of people he talked to with the opening line "nice to see you again" speaks volumes. The way he explains the food, allowing you to taste to make sure you like it is high quality service. It really is the little things that makes the difference.Back to the food. As I wrote before, I have had better food. Poppadoms and pickle tray was better at Mumtaz in Bradford. My starter of poached egg and spinach was spicy and tasty. It was a surprise as the menu said. I had a King prawn Jalfrezi that was very good, with the right amount of spice and heat. In terms of main, I have had better but usually at a price 3 times as high. All in all, I wish this place all the success as long as the quality of food and service stays at this level.

I've been coming to Spices for about 6 years now. I eat here about once a month generally with my brother but also with other family, friends and business contacts from abroad. We must have taken about 50 different people here over the past few years and all of them, without exception, have loved the food they've been served. I do like curry a lot, I must admit, and have eaten at most of the better regarded restaurants in town; I can honestly say that the specials on Spices' menu (particularly my favourite the Moris Masala) compare with the very best offerings from those places but at a fraction of the price. The experience is a little different in that the owner will want to engage with you when taking your order but I don't understand the reviewers who are saying this is a bad thing. He cares about the food he serves and will often try to encourage you to make more adventurous choices than what you're perhaps accustomed to but I think that's great. The food can take a while to arrive, presumably as a result of it being tailored to individual tastes and also freshly cooked, so it might not be ideal if you're in a rush, but otherwise you'll have a great time and meal here. I personally prefer the chicken over the lamb dishes but both work well. The restaurant is not big and the seating can be cramped in a large group but, as one of our very discerning friends from Germany pointed out, it's all about the food and, if you approach the place with an open mind, you will be bowled over by what they serve here.

Chapel Market road looks lonely after market hour. However when we ventured further along the road to captured Spices. Ali greeted us on arrived. The restaurant was empty but the takeout guys were busy rushing orders out. Good sign. We picked a table and glanced though the lengthy menu. I asked Ali to assist my selections. I had a desire for something great, new to my palate and for filling to my hunger. We spoke about the different spices and sauce bases before finally establishing my ideal meal for the evening. I'm a pescetarian. My companion then asked Ali to assist him to discover the great tastes of N Asia. The fresh make garlic naan bread was sensational and our starter. Lebu and samosas. For the main we had Moris Masala, mixed veg Bathi, pilau rice more naan, and another fish dish. The service was great. I took the take out menu as Ali delivers to my area and I will definitely be ordering from them. The meal was delicious and filling. It was hard leaving. As the restaurant not extremely busy it would be good for group bookings as long as the chef can handle both online orders, phone orders and restaurant diners.

I ordered Lamb Tikka Masala and was asked by the pushy manager/waiter (see other reviews) if I like my meat "tough' or "tender". Obviously I asked for tender. This was a ruse I think because rather than freshly cooked tikka in a masala sauce, I got some old slop of a school dinner stew with grisly lamb inside. It came up in about 3 minutes! It was brown stew with about ten tablespoons of sugar in it from taste. Totally disgusting. I then said could I change it because it was too sweet. I got a lecture about how masala was cooked and it was always like this. I said 'well, I have had this dish about 100 times in my life and it's never been like this.'TBF he quickly ended the argument and offered to change it. But rather than let me choose from the menu, he began asking what individual ingredients I wanted in my curry. Did I want onions? Peppers? Minty or lemony? Hot or medium? It was baffling and I just went along with his suggestion.Three more minutes passed and another "freshly cooked" dish arrived. Was almost the some but with less sugar. Still nasty, but with little flavour or heat and with same boiled up old lamb. I wanted to leave but in the end not wanting to make a scene ate what I could. I also ordered a naan bread. This came up half cooked. I nibbled at the doughy tasteless mass but it was horrible. I quietly asked a waiter for it to be cooked a little more. But he didn't understand and went to get the pushy manager character. He insisted I have a new freshly cooked one but 'I must enjoy my dish properly'. Okay fine if that is easier, I said. I should have told him though, that I liked my naan 'very well done'. I apologised. Three minutes later another naan bread arrived cooked identically in a half-done way. Oh dear, oh dear. I nibbled what I could and got the bill.I could hear the pushy manager doing his schtick around the restaurant with other people. Can't believe the number positive reviews on this site. Maybe I had a bad experience but I remembered I had been there with a group a couple of years ago and the experience was indentical. (Stupid, I know, but one forget these things.)

A regular customer of Spices, over 10 years. Always enjoy the food but i tend to stick to my usual. If you like your Curry 'Hot' then the Lamb or Chhicken Phall extra hot with Green Chillies is the one. All the dishes are full of flavour and good service as well. Very friendly and always very welcoming staff. if it's not on the menu, they will do their best. A shame the reasturant which does takeways and deliveries, could do with more space and seating, but has been extended since they first opened. A very popular place and a large fan base. Good tasty food and reasonable prices make Spices the place for your Curry.

We went with a child who doesn't like spicy food they gave her a korma that was a little bit mild but she enjoyed. All other family members enjoyed. Our favourite Indian restaurant. We went there for an family meal took out our son and his daughter they both really enjoyed there starter and main, had a really good night and not that expensive for a good quality family run business. The services and atmosphere was warm and friendly.

Visited one cold evening whilst in town on business. TA really came up trumps with this one. A bit basic in appearance, but scores really highly for an authentic experience. Would highly recommend, superbly tasty, full of flavour. Friendly service, very reasonably priced. A must!

Today I had a pleasure to try some really nice food in this small, family-runned restaurant. I haven't had many occasions to eat Indian/Bangladeshi food before, so I wasn't sure what I should order. Fortunately, a watier serving our table knew his job very well - by asking me about my taste preferances, he suggested me dishes which he thought I would like most. And they were really great! Moreover, in the restaurant there is a rule that if you don't like to food, you will get something else. Also, you can bring your own alcohol. Ah, one more thing, the plates were nice and warm (not like somebody else wrote in the review ;) I will definitely come here again and bring along my friends! Thank you for a lovely evening :)

This place has a strange usp: the manager is the only one allowed to take your order and he imposes his suggestions onto you. This meant that we had to wait 15 minutes whilst he did his thing, despite 3 members of staff hovering around with nothing to do. We placed our orders but he had a bullying way of trying to persuade my boyfriend into ordering something other than his lamb pasanda. I explained that he didn't like any chilli whatsoever and was happy with his choice. The manager stormed off, very disgruntled. Our starters were greasy and unappealing and our mains were horrible. We had both ordered lamb dishes and the meat was in tiny pieces and very tough. When the manager asked how we had liked our meal, I mentioned the tough lamb and he gave me a lecture on how they boil the lamb first because that is authentic. Well that is rubbish as I am am half Bangladeshi and we would never eat or serve food that bad. If you can bare to travel a it further, then go to The Cinnamon Tree in Exmouth Market, where they actually care about the food they serve.

We went here last night as our friend had described it as the best Indian restaurant in London, and we had a great night! The food was really tasty, lots of fresh flavours. The staff were friendly and very good at recommending which dishes to order. It's a very relaxed place so perfect for a group, and as it's BYOB it's excellent value for money - looking forward to returning!

We enjoyed a friday evening meal at Spices. We had great food at a decent price - the place was quite quiet but meant we were served relatively quickly (once our order was taken..). I'd happily go back again.

This is such a shame, because I used to be a big fan of this place. I think the near-universal praise of Spices has gone to their head, because on our last visit the staff were incredibly rude. Snapped at us when we arrived, lectured us about how to chill our wine in the fridge (!), and then refused to accept Tastecard as advertised. The curry was nice enough but the experience was made miserable by the dismissive service. There are plenty of nice places to eat in Angel, so I won't be returning.

I appreciate it's colder than usual early Feb., and that heated trays are no longer in fashion, but this place let itself down on a freezing night. The inside was barely warm, the dinner plates were hardly lukewarm. The food was hot and spicy although note that options are limited on the special meal offer menu, but in a few minutes it was all too cold to enjoy.Had we not been hurrying to an event nearby we would have sent it all back for a re- heat.

Ordering online is a big, big MISTAKE -- one I seriously paid for, literally and figuratively. The upshot: I made an order and paid through paypal. Spices claimed it never received payment. Unfortunately for me, the payment was taken from my bank. People at Spices were unbelievably rude, and I mean unbelievably. Just reprehensible behaviour. Finally, after I said I would leave a negative review reflecting this experience, the manager informed me that I could 'go to yelp or go to hell' for all he cared. Apparently, I was already there. Very nice. I am a customer that placed a large order in good faith. Instead, my entire evening was absolutely ruined -- no food but plenty of time wasted on the phone with Spices, Paypal, and my bank. AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE.

A great place to go with friends or that special someone. A cozy neighborhood spot where Ali, the owner and chef takes your order and recommends the best complimentary dishes. The food is fresh, delicious and always great. One of my favorite London restaurants.

My brother and I have been to a lot of curry houses in London over the years. We have tried upmarket ones through to less fancy offerings. We’ve been going to Spices for well over four years and have taken pretty much all of our friends and family, who are often visiting from abroad, there as well. The restaurant is quite small, and is akin to eating in someone’s dining room, this creates a nice relaxed and friendly atmosphere, which adds to the dining experience. The restaurant is BYOB and there's an off-licence opposite. The restaurant owner Ali is very friendly and furthermore, he is incredibly knowledgeable about curries. When taking customers’ orders he asks them to describe their ideal curry, he then makes dish recommendations based on what they have described. The curries are freshly cooked to the diner's individual requirements, there are no generic-tasting curries served at Spices. Ali is genuinely passionate about the food served in his restaurant. Eating here is also incredibly good value and the service offered by Ali and his staff is second to none. Perhaps most importantly of all, the food served here is superb and I think it can compete with any other curry offering in London.

What a great treat! I was back in London for a visit and this place will be my go-to whenever I'm back. The place is small and intimate yet relaxed and the owner took the time to make sure that everyone made a selection they'd be happy with. I usually go with a classic like a jalfrezi but based on the owner's recommendation (after maybe a 2-min conversation about what kind of flavors I like), I ordered the Morris Masala. It was a revelation for my taste buds!! Every one in our group really enjoyed their food - including my mum who ordered the lamb kofte (indian version of comfort food like spag-bol) and that was amazing too! They have a policy of customers tasting their dishes and having the option to send back within a minute if they don't like it. The choices were extensive so it was very helpful to have the owner help us. The personalized service (clearly passionate about food, and humorous at the same time) was entertainment in it's own right and the food was amazing!! (And it's BYOB, which is not a bad idea for indian restaurants that usually are lacking in that department).

I have traveled to some 40 countries enjoying the local cuisine as well as trying out your typical favorites, such as Indian and Thai. At Spices, I found an exceptional mix of great food, outstanding service, and a cook who went out of his way to make sure the customer is more than satisfied. I went there with a group of seven, including a vegan, a vegetarian, a gluten-free individual, and a "give me a lot of meat" guy like me. The chef came out to discuss the ingredients in each selection to ensure it met everyone's dietary standards. Needless to say, all diners were extremely pleased. He did not leave out any spices. This is one of the best Indian restaurants in the world and would compete with those in India. Give this place a try and your palate will thank you. You can even bring in your own drink to boot!

Unless you are really hungry and no where to go, otherwise its wise to avoid this restaurant. The guy who runs this business is completely a nonsense person. The way he talks to his customers as well as his other staffs as if he were a king, everyone his slave. My visit to this restaurant brings me the chance to see how horrible if an uneducated person runs a business. A dodgy guy puts all the name of the home cooked Bangali dishes, but practically nothing special.
