Spice Island in Greenwich

I don't like to leave bad reviews, but we had a take-away from Spice Island (mistakenly thought we'd ordered from there before but turns out we'd ordered from Spice King previously) anyway, I had chicken tikka masala which is pretty standard, but it was tasteless. And I'm sad to say I wont be ordering from here again, and it has put me off ever going to the restaurant itself. Desperately need some good restaurants on/near Plumstead common!

Came at 10.30pm and said restaurant was closed even though advertised until 11.30. Do not come. Rude and terrible food. Avoid at all Costs

Gave it a go recently. Quality of meals was variable, my chicken jalfrezi was OK first time, was given tikka jalfrezi second time by mistake, and just average 3rd time. Wife and daughters chicken tikka mains were OK - nothing spectacular. Veg sides were oily and lacking taste. Chapatis fresh and hot - best bit of meal, sadly. We tried - it wasn't great - we won't be back.

I have been coming to this restaurant for many years, I have never had a bad meal. Amazing flavours, and generous portions for a decent price! The staff are always accommodating and helpful for birthdays etc.

The service was really good The place is nice, cosy and easy accessible by car with plenty of car parking The food was good but rice portions are kind of small. Overall good atmosphere. Will suggest and will go back.

Takeaway for family, food terrible & very costly, more than half went in bin, definitely shall not be ordering from there again.

Really enjoyed dinner with my friend. Meat in curries was very soft and cooked to perfection. Tasty naan breads, perfectly spiced curries too. I wish portions of rice were bigger as they were a bit small, same like tiny glasses of Coke. Everything else was amazing. Reasonable prices too.

I’ve probably tried all the Indian food in Welling, Bexley, and Plumstead, and this is the best especially for vegetarians. I usually (twice a month probably) have a Paneer Makhani and it’s superb. All my family are happy to go sit in there and we always come away pleased. Never had a problem, even for delivery’s, love the place.

Been coming here for years. Great reliable friendly service, nicest curry house in the area by a country mile. The food is delicious and the portions are massive, especially the takeaways.

I've been coming here since I was little (25 years). Its a nice local restaurant and the food is good and quite reasonably priced. Always leave satisfied.

Reading the reviews from some contributors I thought I must be reading about a different restaurant. Bland, Poor Food, they must have been eating somewhere else. I have been eating in this restaurant for years and have taken many people there sometimes in large groups and never had a bad meal and neither has anyone else. A few days ago I took 13 people there for a meal and everyone commented on how good the food was and most of them had been before and had suggested we return there. I will just mention that I very often eat Indian food at many different establishments in the UK and sometimes overseas but the Spice Island is very much my favourite in terms of both quality and value for money. The do the best meat madras I ever get anywhere but that is not all that I have there. In summary an excellent Indian restaurant with really nice staff and if you have not tried it then you should. By the way the madras is very hot as it should be so don't order it if you are not prepared for that.

Spice Island, is a great local Indian restaurant, with a strong menu of dishes. Starters are diverse and my favourite is the meat Samoa & the chicken Chat Puree. We regularly get take away from Spice Island (by phoning in a order and walking round to collect it) and I have never experienced the problems which other Tripadvisors are reporting in their reviews. Their range of naan breads is also good, happy to recommend the Keema Naan.

Have been visiting Spice Island and having takeways delivered since they opened many years ago. BUT, recent visits have been very different, meals just never taste the same anymore. Had takeway delivered on Saturday. Three different curries, Dopiaza, Tikka Jalfrezi and North Indian Chilli Garlic - no exaggeration they all looked and tasted exactly the same, I actually finished my husbands thinking it was mine and I cannot stand Dopiaza. No heat or spice or seasoning in anything, not a chilli in sight. Best bit was the potatoe sag. Rice was small portions and dry. The chicken breast was one of the best things about this restaurant and even that was dry. Real shame, they must keep changing the Chef, it is the only reason I can think of why the food never tastes the same and has changed so dramatically, now poor. Staff attentive and polite, service good. Agree could do with a bit of spruce up but within walking distance. Good value, such a shame we probably will look elsewhere now.

Stop here occasionally for takeaway. Really nice staff, good food and well priced. Will be coming more often.

This restraint has been going down hill for a long time !my guest it's the chief or a very low budget on food spending ,I would never go there again unless I hear otherwise wise.

I've been going here for donkey's years and the food here is really good. So too is the relaxed atmosphere. Good variety of dishes and I also find the prices very reasonable.

Having spent years going to a different Indian takeaway each week, we found Spice Island and love their food and the service. They are always really friendly and helpful. The special Elvis and Blues Brothers nights are worth checking out too!

What we had today was undoubtedly the worst biryani (taste, look, smell). It was just masala rice with small chicken pieces. Tandoori chicken was equally dry and tasteless. Quantity was good.

Whilst the poppadoms and starters were nice ( chicken chat and a prawn puri), the main was terrible, Chicken tikka Karahi, instead of a nice sizzleling dish it was more like a damp squib! slices of pre-cooked chicked tikka, probably fron the co-op next door, dumped in a tasteless sauce, complained and received £3.75 in compo.I should have realised the restaurant was on the way down when they have no Cobra or any other beer in large bottles,( this is so they can charge twice as much).

I have been here once but have got quite a few takeaways from here. Food has always been good and always quick delivery. The restaurant was very busy and it's better to go during the week.

Friendly and efficient staff. Food VERY spicy. I was OK with my mixed-grill tandoori and my wife with the king prawn tikki masala. But my son had a hard time with the pepper curry ; he should have listened to the waiter's advice. Finally, they took all the leftovers, added a lot of mild sauce and rice and gave them to us when we left. Prices are really cheap (less than £10 for most mains)

I waited 2 hours for my food and ended up not accepting it due to the lack of customer service. Having chased twice for my order and providing my phone number they failed to deliver my food and insisted I pay full price despite turning up almost 2 hours late. Never ordering from this place again.

Poor quality Indian - an old fashioned place with indifferent service and food that looks and tastes like the old 3 pot cookery style. The place was empty - we should have known better.Apparently they do Elvis nights - may be novel? But I wouldn't goo there for the food.

Have eaten in and as a take away. Always had delicious food, meat always tender and perfectly cooked, always great, polite service when eating in, kids have also enjoyed eating there ( 4 1/2 and 7) the couple of times we have taken them. Have tried lots of others in the area but always come back here.

My advice would be to go when it is less busy that way you will get the service you require ! Food was really nice and the prices are extremely cheep

We came here on a Saturday evening at 6-6.30pm and ordered starters.The starters were fine but the level of service deteriorated when the restaurant got busy at about 7-7.30 and we found ourselves waiting a long time for drinks and had to remind staff that we were waiting.I was almost appeased when the main course arrived as the sauce (dansak) was tasty but the meat itself was virtually tasteless.Probably best visited if already numbed form alcohol or possibly on a quieter night ?

Upon our arrival we were greated by a friendy chap,we asked for a table for 2 and we were seated were we wanted to sit,wwe were given menus and a wine list and given time to order,We orded our good and drinks and they came in good time,the food was presented nicely the plates didnt look very clean i poined this out to out waiter and he said it was because they were very old! i did wipe mine with a napkin,the marks on the plate remaind there so i let him put some food on there,i have to say i wasnþ very happy about this but what could i do?The guest i was with realised at this point that they had the wrong food and we tryed to get our waiters attention,which was difficult as he appeared to be playing on his phone,there were also there customers trying to do the same thing but they also couldnt get his attention!Finaly i had to go to the bar and talk to the manager who was also looking at the phone...We eventuly got what we asked for and so did the other customers i will assume!We did get and apolage for the wait but i have to say i wont be rushing back,as an eatin in customer take out maybe. I would advice them to change there dinner service, and stop staff useing there phones while on duty.

I went to the spice island for a xmas party with my work colleagues, there was an elvis impersonator he was great but everything else was not, there were no table clothes so you might as well have gone to a cafe, they bought over the poppadoms but gave us no plates, I had to ask them and eventually we got plates,then we all ordered the food and after ordering the food it took over an hour for them to bring it to us I again had to ask where the food was,well the rice came out but no curries to go with them 20 mins later the curries came out so the rice was cold the food was awful 5 out of our group never even got food we didnt get the side dishes and naan breads,the waiters were not very helpful so in the end we had to ask for the manager he eventually spoke to us but didnt think there was a problem he did not deduct our missing items so we took the price of the missing items off the bill he was not a happy bunny and then started shouting at us, avoid this place even the drinks were flat

We went to spice island for the first time on Saturday evening. The place had a handful of customers. The waiters were disinterested in serving us, no smiles, drinks took 25 mins to come and we had to ask over 3 times for them and the food was very very average and all the curries we ordered tasted the same as if they used one main sauce. No depth of flavour and no spice to speak of. Would not recommend and would not return. If you want a decent curry or a nice atmosphere, I'd avoid if I were you.

Tried this as a take away back in 2006 and didnt enjoy it. We were walking past recently and throught we would give it another try and wished we hadn't. Food lacked flavour and the meat wasn't great quality either. It is cheaper than other places so I guess youngest what you pay for. If you are drunk then it probably tastes fine. Sorry but won't be returning. Will continue the search for a decent curry in Plumstead!

Party of four on a Saturday night. We were not seated immediately which is not that much of an issue. The place was rammed! After 15 minutes a waiter asked for our drink order. Two of our party wanted tap water which was not a problem. 5 stars in that respect. Service was very slow, by the time our food arrived we were all starving. Food was tasty but the next day all four of us had very loose stools.high point getting a bill not far off £10 a head. Low, the sweaty waiters ignoring you while you beg for the bill. We use this restaurant on a regular basis mainly for a Take away. Excellent Chicken Madras and consistently quality curries at very reasonable prices. Nice warm restaurant and prompt and cheerful service. Love it and think it deserves your patronage if you live in the area - well it will be doing you the favour if you enjoy indian food.

With its ageing carpet and formica tables, this isn't really the place for a special occasion. That said, the restaurant itself is quite serviceable, and the food's decent. I've always found the waiting staff to be very friendly, too, and nothing's too much trouble (always happy to add extra chillies of make a dhansak 'vindaloo hot'). I've also had lots of takeaways from this place down the years: again, I would give a whole-hearted recommendation. Very reasonably priced, and loads of it! Always enough for a second helping the following evening! Cheap, no-frills, no-nonsense dining...

Been here several times and I love the food here, we have been the past 3 new years eves and the service is good too. You get alot in your dishes and is always nice and if there is too much you can always take some home with you.

we are regular indian food eaters and this was up to scratch, with low prices and large portions. The meat dishes were well prepared, having probably been marinated in the sauces rather than sauced-up at the last minute.

We ordered a takeaway from Spice Island.After collecting it and bringing it home, we sat down with the food and a movie for a comfortable night in.The lamb dansak was cold. The saag paneer didnt have paneer in it, they put in clumps of cheddar cheese!! I called up the restaurant and asked them if they put in cheese or actual paneer in their saag paneer. He kindly informed me that they use cheese and not paneer. This must have changed as I have eaten there before and it has always been paneer.Will not be going back there unless I am desperate and there is no where else open.They can make this such a good restaurant but they choose to sacrifice quality for ease of life.

I used this place a few times and each time they burnt the onions in the curry sauce, one time they forgot my bhajis too. Only go back because there is very little else in the area and I like curry.
