What a gem of a place! This place is out of this world. Everything me and my wife had was utterly incredible. From the starter to dessert the only disappointment I had was that I had finished the meal. If my wife would allow it I'd have started again. You have to go here even if you have to drive completely out of your way to get there. Service was friendly, relaxed and efficient and they have have got the ambience just right. It really is the best meal I have had in years so I'd implore others to go and try it for themselves. Make sure you save room for dessert because the ginger pudding is incredible.

My wife and I had a great meal here while on a week's holiday near Harlech. When we phoned to check availability and were advised to book for a Tuesday evening we were a bit skeptical, but the restaurant was full, and after the meal, we could see why! My lamb chops were outstanding, and the sides were all delicious, particularly the fried plantain. The desserts were quite simple, but again, our mango sorbet and coconut and chocolate ice cream were delicious. Service was good, and the restaurant has a nice, buzzy atmosphere. Just wished we lived closer, but hopefully we'll make it back again one day!

Soul Food is an attractive restaurant situated in the centre of Harlech. The restaurant was full when we enquired if there was a table - however a takeaway menu was offered. When we attempted to order a takeaway we were asked to move away from the main counter and treated like we were aliens. We had to wait outside while our food was prepared and when asked if we could order a drink while we waited the answer was a firm NO. Would definitely not recommend this soul-less place to anyone. Rude staff and average food.

Now my husbands mother is Jamaican so he knows his chicken, rice & peas. The jerk seasoning packs a punch, however one can still taste the other seasoning aside from chillies. Prawns, pork & chicken were tried by all and were beautifully cooked and presented. The meat/fish remaining moist and tender. Mains were curry goat, lime chicken and a choice of traditional accompaniments such as rice & peas, macaroni pie, and plantain. All greedily consumed as so delicious & washed down with some delicious cocktails including a very moreish rum punch. Staff and propieter attentive and friendly. MORE AT TripAdvisor

We happened upon this unassuming little restaurant by chance when our restaurant of choice was fully booked, and boy oh boy am I glad they were fully booked? Otherwise it is unlikely we would have ventured round the town of Harlech looking for somewhere to eat. But we did and it was into Soul Food we went. We were given a choice of tables, offered both the food menu and cocktail menu. We were served by both the waitresses and the owner all seamlessly interchangeable. The service was 'just right', a fine balance between being made incredibly welcome and being left to enjoy the stunning food. This was the first time for both of us in a Caribbean food restaurant and so had no expectations of what was what. The music was just on the cusp of loud, the decor was spotless, simple with splashes of Caribbean colour and the atmosphere was definitely warm and welcoming. We later discovered the music and colour were very Trinidadian - I just had a lovely feeling almost like you were at a friends for supper. It was not in the least pretentious; dress code could be smart casual to very casual. There was so much on the simply laid out menu with a reasonable and sensible pricing structure that I wanted to try, I really was on the verge of making a complete pig of myself. In the end I went for the Saltfish (Buljol I think) and coconut bake starter which was superb if not salty, but it did say so on the tin. My partner had the spicy prawn starter. He's a big eater and was delighted when a good sized portion arrived with many more than your average 3 to 5 prawns on board. For main I had the goats curry with 2 sides of plantain and peas and rice ... it was glorious! The curry was hot, probably just perfectly and tantalisingly too hot for me, but coupled with the ever so subtly sweet fried plantain it took on a match made in heaven, and with the rice and peas (not green ones either ... the proper peas from rice and peas!!) I just needed the Caribbean sunshine!! My partner had the jerk belly pork with macaroni pie and homemade coleslaw which as a combo sounds weird but you know what - it worked superbly. In fact talking to the passionate but gently spoken owner he told us that every dish works well with every side so one just cannot go wrong, but I get the impression even if you did it would be celebrated and embraced as a happy accident.Where there any negatives? No. Will we go back? Yes, we're only here on holiday for another 5 days and are planning another visit, this time we'll take our 10 year old in the knowledge that children are most welcome and there is a great choice of 'not too spicy' dishes for those with delicate palates. We also noted that there is a special takeaway menu and we may even grab a takeaway before we head home. Finally, coming across Soul Food in Harlech, an ancient, narrow streeted historic town in the shadow of the austere 13th Century Harlech Castle in beautiful rural North Wales was a surprise to say the very very least. When not on holiday we live not a million miles away from a big cosmopolitan city and I know that there is nothing to compare to Soul Food, in fact I am not even sure there is an authentic Caribbean Restaurant there at all. So to all who live in or near Harlech ... I am really envious of your good fortune! And definitely finally, we chatted to some locals in Porthmadog they'd not heard of Soul Food ... well they have now!!

As mentioned before, whenever I go away, I'm always on the lookout for West Indian cuisine. I only tend to have it if I see ingredients in the supermarket or I happen to go to one of the bigger towns where I am and treat myself. So, not very often. So I'm on holiday camping and I was planning to have a Chinese takeaway. Imagine my surprise when my wife comments on a restaurant called Soul Food. Immediately, my radar goes off and I'm briskly walking towards the restaurant to find out what tasty morsels is being cooked inside.Already, I'm happy and that's without tasting the food, a Caribbean restaurant in the wilderness of Wales. So, I scan the menu and notice that there are a few Trinidadian menu items on there. Bonus points again considering that I have Trinidadian/Jamacian heritage. Most restaurants that I sample tend to be Jamaican focused.I ended up having the Goat curry, roti, rice and peas and fried plantain with a can of Ginger Beer. You couldn't get any more Trini than that (In my opinion). I'll cut to the chase, the food was excellent, the curry was a bit hot (only because my taste buds wasn't used to the hotness that I was used to before), but it wasn't offensively hot. It still had lots of flavour and it melted in the mouth which is what you want with goat. The portion was also generous. The roti was flaky and delicious and complimented the meat.My kids had the children's option of fried chicken pieces (like nuggets) and again, the meat was soft and my kids ate it all up without any complaints. They also tried the various other dishes that we brought and while some wasn't too their taste, they didn't out right reject it.My wife isn't a fan of hot food so when she tried the Trinidadian Lime Chicken and rice with a side of Macaroni Pie, she enjoyed it so much that we plan to eat there again the next time we go camping at Shell Island. She's tasted my mother's Trini cooking so she had that to compare to and she had nothing bad to say about the Soul Food chicken. It wasn't pepper hot and she really enjoyed the flavour. So from the family, Soul Food gets a big thumbs up when it comes to W.I restaurants. The price was what I expected it to be and by the end of the meal, it was that good and filling, that I just wanted to rest and relax having enjoyed a good meal. The staff were friendly and I had a good chat about living in London and Trinidad. It's a pity that I couldn't eat in (Not that I could have on that day, they were booked solid). So if you have a chance to go, definitely check out Soul Food, I'm of the opinion that you will not regret it.

Everyone in our party of eight enjoyed their meal, starting with tasty cocktails before the food. That rangedfrom boneless goat curry, seafood offerings to standards like Jerk Chicken. The bill plus tip was about 25 ponds per head, well worth it. The restaurant only opens on Wednesday and Saturday and is clearly a labour of love for the owners rather than just a means of making money. All in all a very pleasant experience.

We were greeted warmly again, Wayne the proprietor coming to chat, born in Trinidad and says he wouldn't serve food he doesn't want to eat.We had a prawn starter followed by Jerk sharing platter that consisted of prawn skewers, half a chicken and a pork chop with jerk sauce, sides of macaroni pie and rice and peas. This is quite spicy, but delicious, the pork melted in your mouth. We had dessert of lemon and lime ice cream cheesecake and a mango and passion fruit ice cream cheesecake. It was the worst sort of wet Welsh weather day, so we were chilled to the bone, damp and very hungry. A party of eight on a Friday night, booking was essential as this tiny restaurant was already humming when we arrived at 7 p.m. Housed in a former shop on the narrow high street, we were able to park opposite. Known both as "Soul Food" and "Caribbean Restaurant" (depending where advertised) the host is a genial Trinidadian. Not a huge menu, but certainly varied enough for all tastes and our party had 4x jerk tiger prawns (which proved a tad too hot for some), 1x caramelised lime chicken (not in the least hot), 1x Jamaican fish curry (comment "tasted fishier the more I ate") and 2x jerk belly pork, which was really every bit the two chilly rating if not more and beautifully melt-in-the-mouth. The side dishes of macaroni, plantain, sweet potato fries, coconut rice and roti were also generous and flavoursome. The piglets of the party squeezed either a tasty coconut and chocolate ice cream or welcome lime water ice in at the end, but the main course portions were really generous enough to satisfy the hungriest of the party. Combined with a friendly young service team and great West Indian music, this is a restaurant my friends and I can 100% recommend.

I have been holidaying in this part of Wales my entire life and can now say this place is a fantastic addition to the area and a “must visit” if staying in Harlech or surrounding areas such as Barmouth or Porthmadog.Between us we tried pretty much everything on the menu and everybody was delighted. Firstly we were welcomed by Wayne who was an excellent host and more than happy to explain how the dishes were made (and their origins!) to anyone not familiar with this type of cuisine. While we were deciding what to order I sampled a Soul Food special cocktail which certainly packed a punch.I had the jerk pork skewers which were fantastic and would order again, the pork had clearly been slow cooked and was like butter. I also got to try the salt fish that someone else had ordered and it was a taste explosion, so next time I will have a difficult decision to make. For main course I had the Jamaican fish curry which was again full of flavour and had some decent heat to it. On the side I had a roti and some sweet potato fries with it but my partner had the macaroni pie which I regretted not ordering when I tasted it. There were a couple of people in the party not too keen on spicy food and they went for the caramelised lime chicken which got excellent reviews. The three kids cleaned their plates and loved it all.If you like quality home cooked food, reasonably priced, in a nice environment and with an excellent host then you can’t go wrong here. I will be returning here when I am back in August and will probably get a takeaway at some point too!

We live locally and this is our 2nd takeaway from Soul Food. So delicious. Everything fresh. I am vegetarian and always looking for something different when I eat out. Jerk Quorn! Brilliant. Husband had jerk chicken and curry goat. Spicey and perfect - never had better. Well done and thank you to Kath and Wayne!

Food was OK, quite authentic! Particularly enjoyed things like plantain which are not usual in the UK, But the atmosphere is cool, we felt a bit crammed in next to the next tables with elbows touching. All in all it was an average experience that we shared very closely with our neighbours! Service was not the best either, although the owner was nice to guests the warmth was not transferred to the waiting staff. Not terrible though and if you don't mind a "close" dining experience then this place may be worth a try, if only for the food...

We were so impressed by our first visit that we booked for the following night immediately. The first night three of us had a Jerk dish and were very impressed by the taste, heat and spices. The other (vegetarian) also enjoyed his. The highlight though were the desserts. Lemon and Lime or Mango ice cream cheesecake, plus a chocolate and coconut ice cream. 5 out of 5.The second night vegetarian curry in a wrap - excellent, Goat curry - excellent. However the lime marinated chicken - two of us felt this was a bit bland in comparison and a bit disappointing. Desserts again excellent. 4 out of 5.Well recommended.

You really don't expect to come across jerk chicken, ackee and saltfish in the land of welshcakes and bara brith. But here it is, and we hope it's here to stay. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and patiently explained (no doubt for the Nth time) how West Indians ended up in NW Wales. It's a great addition to the town.

Having read the reviews of this place and seen that it was #1 in Harlech, I just knew we had to go when we visited.I went with reviewer thurstonpking (just below) and as he said, we shared jerk chicken and goat curry. I also had a couple of cocktails (sneaky b@stard was the name!). The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, our food was delicious and although the goat was a little spicy for me, it wasn't stupidly hot - I'm a wimp! Also nice that there were no bones in the goat curry. This was such a welcome break among the pub grub we found pretty much everywhere else. If this restaurant was local to me, I'd be there on a very regular basis. We thoroughly enjoyed our food. The only to be aware of is that they aren't open every day, at least not when we visited so check that before you head on over.YUM!

Had a meal here last week, my other half and I shared goat curry and jerk chicken with a variety of sides. All the food was delicious but the goat curry was the absolute winner for me - tender boneless goat and the curry sauce was exceptional, a bit spicy for my other half but absolutely perfect in my book. Quite a small restaurant but clean and nicely decorated with friendly staff, would highly recommend.

Having never tried Caribean style food, and as we were staying in Harlech, we gave it a go, and I'm so glad we did, the Mango and Brie parcel was superb, for the main we had the Jerk Chicken, for me it was really good, though the wife found it a tad hot ! It's all down to the individuals ! I would definately recommend Soul Food if you like it hot and spicy, but the staff made it a very enjoyable evening, if you go to Harlech, try it .

No rush, chilled out is all I can describe it as and we can't wait to return in August to enjoy a curry and more Long Island iced teas.

We ordered our takeaway online around 4:30pm, having spent a while as a family pouring over the menu online, deciding what to have and what the kids could try. After receiving no confirmation email, we called to double check our order had reached them. The gentleman on the phone scoffed that they didn't open until 6pm (even though on their website it says 4pm...) so 'of course they hadn't seen our order'. We were instructed to call back later. When we did so, there was still no sign of our online order so we proceeded to tell them again over the phone. It became apparent very quickly that the menu on their website is very out of date and most of things we wanted to order weren't available any more because 'they weren't selling well'. By this stage we'd spent 2.5 hours trying to sort food and were so disheartened by the experience (& surprised at the rudeness of the man on the phone!) that we decided to go elsewhere. I explained to the man on the phone why we were frustrated and would be going elsewhere and he was rude & abrupt in his reply. The food may well have been delicious - we will never know.Update your website, update your menus & update your attitude.

I found this restaurant when planning a weekend away with my partner for his birthday. I found Wayne extremely helpful when I made the booking and answering any concerns I had near straight away via email. The long journey was well worth it as the whole experience was amazing. To start I had the BBQ wings and my partner had the jerk chicken wings, both of which had so much flavour and were very juicy. For main I had 1/2 jerk chicken with sides of rise and peas and macaroni pie. The chicken was so succulent and had a lovely spicy flavour, the sides again were excellent and portion size was perfect! My partner had the goat curry with rice and peas and sweet potato fries, he said the curry and fries were the best he'd ever had and I could see for myself how tender the meat was! We both had a cocktail each that were very reasonably priced and didn't skimp on alcohol! I was too full but my partner had the mango sorbet to finish that was presented beautifully. Service was very attentive and we felt very comfortable here. The bill we felt was very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food we had.Overall the food was outstanding and whenever I make the trip over to Wales again I will be sure to revisit. Thankyou for such a wonderful meal soul food!

Unfortunately this evening I found that I couldn't leave a gratuity with a debit card, so I thought I would write a review instead. My wife and I are regular visitors to Harlech and have eaten at Soul Food on a number of occasions. Each time has been excellent. If you are staying in Harlech, be sure to book in advance as it can be busy. This evening I had jerk pork skewers to start, and jerk chicken curry for main. The starter was excellent, the pork was very tender and served with a tasty spicy dip, and a salad with onions and peppers. My main course was also really good, the jerk chicken had some heat to it but it wasn't overpowering. I opted for rice and peas, and macaroni pie as sides, both of which were very good and the portions were generous. We also shared some sweet potato fries with spicy mayo which were a great addition. My wife had prawns with sweet chilli sauce to start, and jerk belly pork for main, which was also really good. There is a nice selection of Cocktails on offer, although I prefer a cold Red Stripe with my curry! The service is relaxed and efficient, and the staff are friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend Soul Food!

This was a complete surprise to find a Caribbean cuisine restaurant with the most amazing food. Harlech should be very proud to have such a restaurant. The food was so delicious and all of my party loved every bit of it! I was also slightly sceptical at first as I know how the saltfish should taste like and the dhal poori. But to my amazement, it was just as authentic as you can get, and to get it in Harlech was just unimaginable. Even the kid's food was not the usual food you would find. The chicken was lightly seasoned and was delicately cooked. The manager was so inviting and the friendly atmosphere with the soulful music just made a usual holiday restaurant experience into something out of this world. Definitely would travel and visit Harlech again just to dine here!! What a find and wish them the best!!I would certainly book beforehand as they had to turn so many people away....

Never eaten food from Trinidad or similar before, and we only ended up here as we were on holiday and options were limited (not main season yet). But someone local in a pub recommended it and we were lucky enough to get the last table. And wow - soooo delicious. My partner and I oohh'd and aahhh'd through every mouthful. The staff (owned by a family) were great. The owner patiently explained to me whet the dishes were as I had no idea what to expect, just knew that I didn't fancy eating chicken off the bones. I had the special beef dish of the day and the 2 sides came with that (big list to choose from) - Rice and peas and macaroni pie. Honestly, it was so enjoyable. My partner had the curried got (I was too squeamish to order goat), but I'm glad he did as it was sensational. All the meat was soft and tasty. We shared a gorgeous ginger pudding - enough for 2 - and had a drink each and then I had an unnecessary cocktail (I was enjoying it so much I just had to), and the bill was £50. Fantastic value for such superb food - and you could eat there much cheaper if you didn't have the drinks we did and the pud. If we return to Harlech then we would be there the first night. Only downside was I think some softer lighting would be good (Pendant lights of candles on tables) - but then I like ambient lighting.....100% recommend a meal here.

A surprising thing to find in a sleepy little place like Harlech but there it is, a genuine Caribbean restaurant and takeaway! Lucky I thought to book, as the evening we went - a Wednesday evening in mid March - it was actually full. A nice mix of visitors and locals too, including a family party. The food was excellent, I had a Jamaican fish curry, made with red snapper, with sides of coconut rice and fried plantain, while my partner went for the veggie option, a nicely spiced "pepper pot". We'd started with garlic mushrooms and curried sweet potato bites, and ended the meal with delicious and quite substantial cheesecakes. I was unfamiliar with Caribbean food but after this I will definitely go for it again - the only problem will be finding a Caribbean restaurant!

Ended our family holiday here tonight for a meal out. Called earlier on the day to book, was told we didn't need to. Now we know why. Not busy at all. No good evening, hello welcome nothing. Tables sticky, not very clean. Walking past kitchen to go toilet, staff sitting on work surfaces etc, well I think they were staff. As everyone seemed to be wearing own clothes, no uniform. Food was good, but could be so much more. 5 young teenager looking staff behind bar, and at least 4/5 of the same in the kitchen. Why so many staff I'm not sure but the place could be amazing.
