Songkran Thai in Sutton

this was a very good Restaurant Run by Pen & tony It now has new owner waiting to try to see if it is better 8 Years ago i use to go nearly every day. Customers thought i was the owner.

Probably the best Thai we have eaten around and this is our regular one … very cozy. Mango papaya salad lovely… pad Thai great … everything reasonably priced

I’d not been for a long while and it has been taken over by new owners. We had dim sum, salt and pepper squid, larb salad, pad Thai, massaman and a stir fry. All delicious Good service. I will be going back !

Oh dear, the food just keeps getting better! We had a lovely meal, starting with mushroom Tom Yum and the flavours were exquisite! I think this was the best Tom Yum Yum I have ever had. I had a lovely chicken green curry with less chicken & more vegetables, my partner had a stir fry; both excellent!

We visited this restaurant last night and had a thoroughly enjoyable dinner. We first visited probably twenty years ago and always really enjoyed the food and were disappointed when there was a change of ownership and the reviews that followed which were not good. Thankfully the current owners know what they are doing and getting it spot on. Ours was a joint birthday celebration, a party of six, including two young boys and we all said how good the food was. The staff were really friendly and the service was great. We hope to return soon.

NB Something is wrong with Tripadvisor as searching for Songkran Thai brings up a load of reviews from 2018 and the pictures relate to the previous owners (2 back!). The new people who have been there for 6 months are very good but don't have access to the website which is owned by 1 or 2 owners back. I cannot find a way to contact Tripadvisor to show only the new reviews which can be found by clicking the TINY link labelled "more recent reviews!" As you will see all recent reviews (including mine) are very good. pity I can't say the same about Tripadvisor!

Visited with a group and would highly recommend. Excellent and friendly service and delicious food. Great value. Staff were really welcoming and nothing was too much trouble.

Was in Cheam on a Friday evening and just popped in off the street, without a booking, so glad we did! Food and service were soooo good. Highly recommend, Thai green curry sauce was top drawer.

Songkran are now on the 3rd lot of owners since lockdown and the new ones are excellent! The previous was a bit bland and before that was good, so bear this in mind when reading reviews below. I had green chicken curry with Jasmine rice on my first June visit (I always ask for less chicken and more vegetables) the flavours were amazing! We also had Garden rolls to share as a starter and the freshness of the herbs was obvious. I went again 13 days later and had the Chicken Larb salad with sticky rice; again the freshness of ingredients came through in spades! This was too much for me to eat in one sitting, so I took some home and it made a great addition to a salad a couple of days later We went again on Sunday and this time I had the Pad Thai (chicken) and shared spring roll starter. Whilst Pad Thai is not highly spiced, it had lovely flavour and the optional ground chillis combined with the peanuts to give another delicious meal. We will be going back!

This unassuming restaurant was absolutely delightful. Fabulous, tasty food with excellent service. Varied menu with lots of vegetarian and vegan options. This is definitely a place to visit.

Outstanding, delicious AUTHENTIC Thai cuisine. I’ve eaten in Thai restaurants all over England and can say without hesitation that Songkran Thai in Sutton is the best. The restaurant is quite small but not cramped with simple, but tasteful decor. The food is on another level. My sincere compliments to the chef. I look forward to coming back soon. Simply superb.

Great food. Really enjoyed my beef red curry and from trying other bits really recommend the sea bass and pad Thai. Used to love the old songkran and love the new one too.

I used to look forward to ordering a certain dish from the menu before the new owners took over, and when we visited, they did their best to reproduce the dish for me, a lovely big prawn and basil red curry. I thought that was very kind and helpful, and we enjoyed our satay starters very much, they were even better than we had been used to. So yes, it has changed - but in many respects I believe it's better than before. I will have to try something new next time for a change! I certainly believe that whatever I order will be nice quality food, well cooked. I liked the previous owner very much and I'm glad they have given the restaurant into good hands.

For years we had been visiting to Songkran Thai and getting deliveries from them too. The last time we decided to dine there we knew something was amiss when we couldn't access the website menu at all. We arrived to find new staff, bland decor and the menu choices much reduced, all very safe and unimaginative, with my favourites missing. I couldn't find anything I wanted from the limited menu so they agreed to put something together off menu which was OK but there are better Thai restaurants in Cheam, we won't be going back to Songkran unless the former menu and lovely staff are reinstated

Staff very pleasant and accommodating. Decor was of a standard thai restaurant in UK. I found the food to be very salty, especially the chicken with cashew. Dont know if the chef had an accident with the salt, or whether they just tipped a tub of MSG in the dish. Green curry also tasted sour. Pad Thai was ok. Prawn starters were mostly batter.

Unfortunately this restsurant is under new management. we have used this RESTAURANT for the last 10 years and have always found the food amazing... both eat in & takeaway.. locally we do not go anywhere else... NOW...WE WOULD NOT GO BACK... THE NEW OWNERS NEED TO CLOSE SHOP... THE FOOD ( not enough meat in main dishes) THE PORTION SIZES.. ( shrunk). THE PRICE. ( at least 40% mark up). We come here regularly but hadn't had a meal here for Sunday lunch before. It was as excellent as always and there is a lovely atmosphere in this super old fashioned restaurant. The food never disappoints and the enormous prawns in red curry sauce with basil are a real wow. They do lovely tempura mixed veg and fish as a starter, recommended. The people who run this place are so nice and welcoming and we didn't have to wait for our drinks or food. The wine by the glass in very drinkable,too. Knocks the competition out of the water, way better food and service. Very good value for money. There's also a sweet museum over the road, a tudor house, which we went round after lunch, well worth a visit.

Having been to Thailand a number of times I can say this is the most authentic Thai restaurant I have ever been to. Great service ,excellent food, and very reasonable prices. Book before you go to avoid disappointment. Happy eating.

Songkran is on the main street in Cheam, so is v convenient to reach; there is a large pay and display car park just around the corner, next to Cheam church. Inside the restaurant it is small but neatly laid out and service is quick. I ordered the seafood tempura with chilli sauce as a starter which was very oily and consisted of one prawn, one mussel, one piece of fish and one piece of squid and the rest were vegetables.I should have ordered the prawn tempura. For the main course I ordered the roast duck with cashew nuts which was really nice. Two courses plus rice plus a pot of jasmine tea came to £22.20 It included a complementary basket of 3 prawn crackers!!!

Have been many times. Service is always top notch and the food is delicious especially the garlic pepper chicken. An incident occurred on our visit nothing to do with restaurant but they handled it brilliantly and looked after the guests affected.

Perfect place to bring a vegetarian guest , or any guest, they've never let us down. I can't resist the gigantic yummy prawns with basil and the chicken satay is delicious. Both of those choices are reliably good, and there are plenty of other nice dishes. Service is charming and efficient. Booking is necessary for weekends and busy evenings, many are turned away on Saturdays. The takeaway meals are excellent, too. Very good value for the quality.

This is an incredible local Thai restaurant. The food is always excellent. The service impeccable, friendly and accommodating. The food is outstanding, an absolute must.

Great food for a reasonable price in Cheam Sutton. Has about 10 tables and is usually booked on a weekend / semi full on weekday evenings. Staff are friendly and very helpful. They always serve up food very quickly - great if hungry not so great if you want to stretch out the evening!

Came to this very unassuming restaurant in Cheam for a quick pre-Christmas dinner with my housemate. We had the mixed starter to share and then the duck and the chicken red curry. Portion sizes were reasonable and the food was delicious. The best thing about this restaurant however was the glass of wine for £2.50 (instead of the fiver you usually pay) and the tap water on request. All in all starter, mains, a glass of wine and two beers came to £20 a head plus a small tip. I will certainly be coming back.

What a gem of a local Thai restaurant this is. Hidden away and cosy inside but well worth a visit. Really tasty dishes that all consisted of fresh ingredients. The staff were really friendly, attentive and this all added to the overall experience - 10/10

Superb meal after our daughter ran a cross country race in the park nearby. Pad thai and yellow curry were delicious. We live in central London and Songkran Thai would definitely be our local if closer to us. Lucky people of Cheam!

Though the appearance of this Thai restaurant might look a little dated from the outside the food is absolutely fantastic. We have been as a family on a number of occasions to lunch and have never been disappointed. The curries are a favourite though the stir frys and noodles are also very tasty. The service is very friendly and heartfelt and I look forward to our next visit.

Mi sopa de mariscos Tom Yam muy salada y mariscos muy poco. Pollo al Curry rojo también con duros. No tienen prisa para volver, incluso si gratis!

I went here today for a meal with my mum. We have been before and was ok but after tonight never ever again ! We ordered 2 diets cokes, 2 sweet and sour chickens and 2 coconut rice.When eating our meal I noticed that the chicken had a jelly like texture to it and sure enough when I cut it open it was completely raw, not slightly raw or pink in some parts completely raw it was like they had dipped a raw piece of chicken in sweet and sour sauce and then put it on my plate. I showed the waitress who also looked shocked and took it away. She offered me a fresh one to which I declined. My mum who had the same meal decided not to eat hers either. We were extremely disappointed that we had been put off our meals by this food safety negligence. The bill was presented to us with the diet cokes only. Annoyed that they couldn't give them to us complimentary after their mistake we paid our money and left but certainly won't be returning !

This is our fourth meal here and we like it a lot. It's homely with a pleasant atmosphere and the staff really want to be helpful. We tried one of the set meal selections and they were happy to swap one of the choices. I love the big prawns with coconut and basil, hot enough without being too hot, and still tasting of itself. The starter plate to share was delicious, good satay, nice prawn in filo, tasty appetisers. It gets very busy so definitely a good idea to book. Our three course meal came to about £60 with drinks. Only one niggle, we asked for ice cream instead of the set choice of banana fritter. One ball of ice cream was a little meagre, and over-sweetened with sprinkles and squirty sauce, which rather let down the otherwise beautiful ingredients and cooking.

Dined at the Songkran recently and once again could not find fault with anything, reservation, greeting upon arrival, table, menu/food (oh, the food!) or service.We've visited many times and recently have tried numerous new (to us) dishes and everything is always so well cooked, seasoned and presented.Highly recommend theTom Khar Gai soup, a real taste experience, so clean and a spicy, citrus treat for the palette. Goong Yang (grilled king prawn starter) is spot on, tender, sweet and juicy. The Gaeng Par (`jungle curry`) is also very good, particularly when you ask for "50% more spicy", a flavoursome treat.This is a popular understated restaurant and after 8:00 p.m. difficult to get a table but its well worth the wait and (recommended) booking in advance. Will definitely be returning to continue our `journey` (sorry!) through their menu.

Have been to this restaurant many times & can't fault it! Went last night, 6 of us, & again had a great evening. The food is wonderful, lovely flavours, & the people serving are truly wonderful people. You will need to book at weekends as it's a small, but that adds to the charm! One not to be missed!

I have visited here on a number of occasions when visiting mum. We both enjoy Thai food and this is delicious and good value for money. We had themixed starters for two. I had pad Thai with prawns and mum had the scallops followed by our favourite banana fritters all washed down with green tea. The potions are not over facing and we left comfortably replete. All in all good value for money and well worth a visit

As we had a vegetarian friend with us we decided to have a Thai meal and remembered how good the food was here last time. We were really happy with our food and the service was excellent too, nice, smiley people who really looked after us well, though they were packed on a busy Sunday lunch service. Everything is cooked to order and the king prawns with basil were particularly good, with a lovely sauce. There were plenty of vegetarian options and the noodles and rice dishes were gorgeous. It's the real deal.

Been there today based on reviews written here was fairly disappointed as the restaurant was empty and food wasn't exciting. I have been to other Thai places and feel the food there was much better and price wise wasn't any cheaper than any other restaurant in and around the area. Don't think anything today that I ate would tempt me to go there again.

I went to Songkran tonight with four friends, we booked beforehand as we had read reviews that the restaurant is small. I'm glad we did book as the restaurant was full. The food was amazing, I had chicken pad thai and it was very tasty. Food is reasonably priced too, I'm sure my meal was £6.50 very cheap!! Service with a smile! I'm not local to Sutton we were just passing through but I would go back to Songkran again if in the area :) enjoy!

We have been coming here for years. Small and unassuming. We had a takeaway this time. Green curry, beautiful pad Thai, papaya salad, prawn toasts and rice cooked with coconut milk. The portion sizes were excellent. Food was hot, spicy and flavoursome. The staff are unfailingly polite and the whole experience cost me £25!This is a super little restaurant, excellent value and we will keep coming back.

So I went here last night with my date and she was excited because she had been to Thailand a few times and therefore knows what she likes...I didn't have a clue what to order, so we went for two starters, the sausage and the duck spring rolls, both were amazing...for mains, we had a salad type thing, a prawn broth (which was more of a soup and far too tomatoie) and a noodle fish with chicken, now I thought this was very nice, however my date was not impressed and she didn't eat it (said it was the wrong dish)All in all, nice enough, would maybe try again, but would want to have some more knowledge on the food...

This Husband and Wife (in the kitchen) Partnership provide a regular, superb Dinning experience of authentic Thai food, clearly proven by the Thai people dinning in this Restaurant. They seem to take great pride in customer care and satisfaction.. Therefore I am somewhat dumfounded to read a previous protracted Review. This Review seemingly appears to be posted by a person attempting to possibly obtain some form of preferential treatment by way of an attempted arrogant and forceful approach followed by a certainly unjustified review, should, in my opinion, be totally ignored.I would certainly suggest that a visit to the Songkran Thai would prove to be a delightful experience which for me, I consider driving several miles to visit, is well worth the effort of the journey..

We found this restaurant after checking on TA and weren't disappointed. We've visited several times and each visit has been great. The food is fantastic and the atmosphere is welcoming and friendly. It's now become our regular.

Maybe it's not the best way to judge a restaurant by their take away offering, but it should be the same food. On collection the staff were super friendly and helpful. Thai sausage starter was different and very good. The tempura prawns were not "hot" and had gone a bit soggy, but that will be down to us and travelling home with them. the Massiman curry tasted very good but seemed to be quite a small portion with a lot of sauce. Pad Thai noodles were "ok". So maybe not a fair test of what should be expected when dining in the restaurant. As regards the restaurant, it did seem to be quite cramped seating. Never the less, worth investigating as an alternative to Regional Thai Taste across the road, which is definitely more expensive. I would say that the staff are better here. Finding a truly good Thai restaurant is still like searching for hen's teeth :-)

I have been eating at Thai resturants around London since 1988 and have spent a lot of time in Thailand over the years and can speak the language. From talking to the waiter, seeing the food and tasting it, i knew it was far from authentic. When i received Som tam for £6, the dish had only half the amount of som tam and the other half was dry salad, that you would get cheap in tesco, I have ordered som tam many times over the years and always had at least twice as much then what i was given in songkran. I told the waiter this is a very small portion and he's reply was "it is very big for you!" He said i should compare later with other thai restaurants and i said i have already compared and instead of replacing it, again he said, "it is very big for you!." I will let you decided if you think this a service you would feel was acceptable or not. I just moved to the area and mentioned on arrival that i would eat there often and bring friends if i was to enjoy my time there. He obviously soon forgot this or just didn't feel customer care was that important. If i like a place, i do spend a lot more money then the average person and i tend to try most of the top dishes. So shame about this occasion as Songkran is literally around the corner from my new house.

We popped in on the off chance on Thursday before Easter. There was a vast choice of food and drinks which were all served with a smile. The meal was incredibly good value and we would definitely return.

Last year I recorded a Review of this restaurant and it was a delight to re-visit it on Easter Saturday.It is a pleasure to be able to write that the standard, of service and the quality of food continues to be absolutely first class.The range of dishes is outstanding and the prices are exceptional value (perhaps due to the great competition among local restaurants) but, never the less, very appreciated.What catches the eyes immediately on entering, are the immaculately set out tables, with sparkling glasses ,silk napkins and comfortable chairs.The service is most polite and you are made to feel welcome.All the dishes we had were tasty and totally delightful. The drinks complemented the food and the overall hospitality really could not have been improved.Absolutely 100% and fully recommended!

The first thing we noticed was the beautiful table setting, including silk table linen, candles and orchids. The service was discreet and the menu extensive, varied, original and delicious. We are blessed to have this marvellous restaurant on our doorstep!

It was a busy Saturday night as usual and the service and food did not disappoint! You need to book several days ahead of time for a Saturday night. Sadly, the young waiter could not find our reservation in the book so a tense moment but it was found by one of the regular waitresses. The lunchtime set menu is also excellent and good value for money at £8.50!

We went for a family Sunday lunch to celebrate a birthday. The meal (two hours) was spoilt by several small children running around the whole restaurant. The noise was awful (crying, parents calling after them etc) and I couldn't wait to leave. What a pity as the food was excellent. I felt the staff should have asked them to sit at the table, but they did nothing.I was very disappointed as I had looked forward to a nice meal. You have been warned!

This is a fairly small restaurant so booking is usually essential. The food here is amazing, and the service from the staff is outstanding. We visit here regularly and have never been disappointed in any aspect of our meal. Reasonable prices, too.

Songkran has consistently good food and friendly staff, the only issue is the seating which is cramped (however, it's you're prepared for moderate discomfort it's well worthwhile). As far as I can tell most of the food is cooked fresh unlike many local asian takeaways where it's reheated or comes ready made from Wing Yip in Purley Way. You can actually watch the staff here through the large plexiglass kitchen window so you can see how hygienic and fresh they are. The food menu's varied and reasonable and the wines are pretty decent, I would however say that if you're offered the 2 seats beside the till don't take them, they're the most cramped in the place and do detract from your dining experience.

Went here with another couple for the first time and had a pretty good meal. The soup starter I had was very good especially hot which I like. Only down side was the papaya salad was not as good as we have had at other restaurants.

If you are looking for a tasty, value for money, efficient and friendly service, this is a superb choice. Restaurant is small and perhaps lacks the ambience of a place for a special occasion, that's the only reason a 5 mark has nbt been awarded. Parking is very near and the location is a nice spot adjacent to Whitehall. Drinks are very reasonable. Spicy Thai curries and an extensive menu. Manager very friendly and a vary relaxed place, the waiting staff are quiet, yet efficient. Been to most restaurants in the village and this is my #1!

Have visitors here many times as live locally and always forget to review. Love this place warm and friendly excellent food and service and extremely reasonable. Never had a bad experience and will keep coming back.

I usually always go to the very popular Thai opposite this one; as I couldnt get booked there, I asked around and was told this place was equally as nice, if not considered better by some.I booked for myself and 2 girlfriends.We were really very pleasantly surprised.The surroundings don't do the food justice.The restaurant is small inside, with tables very close to maximise capacity.Service was quick and very attentive.We shared the sharing platter starter with 1 of the soups, and everything was freshly cooked, and presented on lovely typical blue & white china.We again then shared a Pad Thai / sliced beef & oyster sauce dish / coconut rice and every this was simply deliciously tasting, and freshly cooked.Coconut rice & mango / Fried banana ice cream finished the meal - and again each were faultless.Lovely crisp / well chilled Pinot Grigio at a good price complimented the meal.We will definitely return and probably make this our first choice now for Thai in Cheam.

Have been quite a few times over many years with my family since it was opened and always had very good food and great value. Most of the time as I said has been with family including a number of kids of 8 years and older. We all loved it! Last time I went last year I think, I may be wrong but it may have been you could still bring your own wine, but the wine is also good value there. No it's not the best Thai food I've ever had, but that was in Thailand! Yes there are some amazing Thai restaurants in the UK which are much more expensive and may be better, but this restaurant is really very good. The staff have always been typically Thai, very friendly, always think of you first and will do anything they can for you. Never irritable under stress! Certain nights it can be busy because it's very popular but you never wait for too long and knowing the food and ambiance is great it's no problem.

We went there lunch time on a Sunday. The first surprise was the restaurant was totally full, except the table we had booked for 4.We opted for the set lunch which was priced at 5.50 and 6.50 if you chose Prawns You can choose to have rice or noodles with your meal. We chose two green curries with chicken and two with prawns.The portions were generous and the taste was authentic Thai. The prawns were really large King Prawns.We had Thai beer and Jasmine Tea as Drinks and the bill was less than 30 pounds.Of course you can choose to have a la Carte.We were very satisfied with the meal. The service was polite,prompt and pleasant.We noticed quite a lot of what we presume to be Thai,customers with families.

Went here based on a recommendation but was a bit diasppointed. Good menu with everything you would expect. We started with the mixed starters but the batter on the prawn was very thick. Other than a spicy noodle dish everything was a bit bland with none of the hot fragrant food that I longed for. Another example of dummed down Thai food. Service was excellent, they even found a pair of reading glasses when my husband forgot his.

We had a lovely Thai meal.I had Padthai - was very tasty.Hubby had Jungle curry - he very much enjoyed he's.Would both recommend

I've been here a few times, the food is always so delicious, friends have all loved it too. The staff are pleasant, and the food is very good value for money.

I hadn't been to this restaurant for some time but went for lunch at the weekend for friend's birthday, the food was wonderful, so tasty and very well presented, good service, the only small thing wrong was that with the air con on it was a little chilly and when turned off got hot quickly so maybe take a light cardigan or wrap. Will definitely go again
