We had the best in betweener afternoon tea today at Something Special Birchgrove treating 23 of my dear friends as a thank you for their support hosting dogs for my Barking Mad Dog home boarding business. Thanks to Sally, Carlos, Beth and their wonderful team. Delicious sandwich and cakes, hot drinks and seamless delivery. You deliver scrummy food and smiles for all. See you for another afternoon tea in 2 weeks for the rest of my lovely hosts 😍🍰☕️

Absolutely fantastic afternoon tea. Without doubt the best in the area for afternoon tea . We went with the half sweet half savoury option which includes a huge piece of quiche and home made sausage roll. Plus all homemade mini cheesecakes, Victoria sandwich fresh cream cakes and lovely freshly made scones . Had to bring some home as couldnt manage it all .highly recommended

A nice little cafe but if you are have dietary requirements not good as they can't offer any other options for dairy free even though we gave two months warning that this was a dietary requirement. ( local morrisons have these things at hand i am sure) .Scones undercooked and vegetarian and meat options mixed

Had a look through some of the lesser positive feedbacks and have to chuckle. Went there for lunch today. It's often very busy and you can't always get a table. The reason a place is busy is because it's good. No one queues for rubbish. Managed to get a table straightaway (11.48) . Pleasantly greeted and pointed to the table. How many places actually take your order nowadays. So refreshing. Order taken and a few minutes later our drinks arrived. No reading a menuboard under pressure. No stacking food on trays like a juggling act, sliding along a rail. No waiting for your drink while your dinner is slowly going cold only to find the person in front has ordered three frappecappychismolatteamerocanos with choc sprinkles and spacedust! I ordered the ploughman's. Three decent chunks of cheese, half baguette, apple, salad, pork pie slice, Coleslaw (homemade) chutney, grapes, pickled onions and celery. All excellent (except celery, which is spawn of the devil in my opinion) I love a ploughman's and this is right up there with the best. I wanted to try their cake but was too full, so we took a slice home for later. Malteser cake was lovely and obviously home made ( one slice more than enough for two unless you need your clothes to fit you better) Didn't need an evening meal I hasten to add. Great service, home made food, very reasonably priced. What else do you want? Thoroughly enjoyed it. Very rare nowadays . Thank you.

Best cooked breakfast we’ve had in a long time, with good portion sizes and tasty produce. The service is friendly, you almost feel like part of the family with a warm welcome and nothing too much trouble. We took some delicious cakes away with us for later, do try the cheesecake!

Arrived for lunch with my mum, got seated promptly by a very friendly, kind gentlemen. My mum had the brie and courgette soup which is an unusual combination I'd never heard of before, but my mum said it was absolutely outstanding - I can also second this as I HAD to try it, so much better than your usual boring cream of tomato...the baguette that was served with it was also really fresh and soft. I had a boring cheese and tomato sandwich, which turned out to not be so boring, it was served with a lovely, generously sized salad garnish, optional salad dressing and crunchy crisps - again bread was beautifully soft and fresh with fresh ingredients. I also ordered a portion of chips and they were to die for! Top marks to something special - beautiful food, lovely friendly staff and reasonably priced - will definitely be returning. Spur of the moment visit on a rainy Saturday morning. We knew the place was there but had forgotten that it was indeed “something special”. Full English and Special Breakfast have the best local ingredients, cooked to perfection. Excellent service with a smile. Can’t ask for more! Can’t wait to try the afternoon tea…

What a great place for lunch or a snack. I have been a couple of times now, the first time with friends on a really hot day. We didn’t fancy a heavy lunch and asked if we could have something light like a prawn salad? The gentleman serving us was very accommodating and nothing felt too much trouble. He spotted when our drinks were nearly empty and asked if we wanted a refill. My second visit was equally good and this time we just had drinks and cake. If I could give one piece of constructive feedback, I do like to look at the cakes before I order, if the cake cabinet was a bit more assessable it may help as people seated near it don’t look too happy when I pass by with my cake goggles on! Great food, great staff, keep up the good work x

Food was ok when it finally arrived , shame it didn’t all arrive together so we could eat together , some food didn’t arrive at all ! They took it off the bill when we said but it was evident they didn’t want to and I’m not sure that they even believed us. I can’t even say they were understaffed it was more the staff just weren’t really interested , as I say a shame as the food was ok. Would go again if there was just a couple of us but not again as a bigger group as they couldn’t cope.

I always enjoyed a visit to Something Special in their old home, so finally got to try their new premises. Unfortunately, I wasn’t impressed and wouldn’t return. The atmosphere at Birchgrove isn’t great and on arrival we were told there would be a 15 minute wait due to the arrival of a large party for afternoon tea. That 15 minutes became 50, by which time we were very hungry and in a rush to get away. They should really have stopped accepting customers until they had served the big table. The food was fine and portions large but we didn’t rate our visit.

Really good Lincolnshire Platter for lunch - nicely presented and filled me up for the rest of the day! I like the ambience and decor of the place and the staff were very friendly.

We had the inbetweener afternoon tea which was bought for us as a gift. It was lovely. Ido however, have one small complaint. There were three other tables all having the in-between at the same time as us. We were the only table that didn't have a piece of chocolate cake included on our in-betweener. It may sound petty but if you are going to seat customers near other customers who are having the same choice of food be consistent in your offering.

We had fantastic afternoon tea platters which were prepared our King's Coronation celebrations. Very pleased with the quality, variety and such reasonable price. Thank you from all of us from Swallows Court, Spalding.

We have been to Something Special for lunch or cake a few times and it has always been very good. This time we had the Inbetweener Afternoon Tea and it was amazing. It looked really impressive when it came out. The cakes looked really pretty and were delicious (as always) . The home made quiche and sausage rolls were lovely. The sandwiches were generously filled. We were served quickly and the staff were friendly and attentive. We must go back again and try the other Afternoon tea.

SERVICE 💯 I came to Birchgorve to try the cafe, something special, for the first time. Scones r soo warm and delicious. Service is amazing/ greeted by someone at the door- wait time is nothing. Fast service highly recommended. 💯💯

As a group of friends we had a lovely catch up over tea and cake here. The service at the table was excellent, tea was plentiful and the cakes were good. However, one of our group, couldn't eat the chocolate on her cheesecake as it had a dark hair embedded in it. Not wanting to make a fuss she gently pointed it out at the end of our afternoon. The gentleman we told was very apologetic and that was all she needed. As we were paying we could overhear a conversation out the back. The gentleman was telling someone about the complaint and she was flatly denying it was possible. This made my friend somewhat embarrassed. It was a totally unnecessary, unpleasant end to what had been a lovely afternoon. Sad because that's 4 families who won't return and all because of a stupid comment from, what we assume was someone in charge.

Received a voucher at Christmas off friends for a meal here which we used today, and went for a breakfast. My wife had the scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, and i had the special breakfast, both with a white coffee and an orange juice.. I can honestly say i have not seen so much food on a plate in a long while. Everything about it was cooked to perfection for me, as was my wifes. A good strong coffee as well to accompany it. Everything was spot on. Nice clean place with friendly staff , will definately be making our way here again for breakfast

Pardon the little dig in the title, but the 19th Dec 2019 review has left me wound up at just how difficult it was to read, clearly a work of childish fiction and utterly untrue. Bitter old biddy syndrome?Aaaaaaanyway....... we’ve just had a family Sunday afternoon tea here, with 20+ people of all ages from 2 to 90. The entire experience could not be faulted. Truly excellent and polite service throughout, from the moment people arrived to the point that they left. The food was clearly freshly prepared and all of it was very tasty. The staff kept doing the rounds to check everyone was happy and if more drinks were required, and nothing was any trouble for them. This is how a ‘small’ establishment of this sort should be run, a real credit to the owners and management. Thank you.

Visited here for afternoon tea and it was absolutely amazing! Nothing was too much trouble with Carlos providing us all with never ending tea and coffee. All the delicious sandwiches were freshly made, with generous fillings of smoke salmon, ham, egg mayonnaise and cheese. The cakes were freshly made by Sally, so light and flavoursome as were the lovely scones served with plenty of jam and thick cream. It’s fantastic value here too, all 4 of us were so full up, we had to take some of the cakes home in box provided. We have had afternoon teas at other venues but this has to be the best for miles around!

awful..unfriendly , unprofessional.. behaviour from the owner and serive received today.i myself have ran a public house and the way these customer was treated was awful..four regularly customer have been lost...and they didn't even get chance to order anything before getting treated very badly and decided walk out! A oap (73 year old) was poked in the back. with no apologie and just given a abuse!!.The owner then told one of the ladies she was unfriendly to one of her customers. given that the lady and the customer are very good friends and the customers had already told the lady she was leaveing..when the issue was raised the owner just disrespected the issue and throw alot of abuse... it was her way or no way..ps special awful something i will be a taking this further then just writing on here. before you get any idea of thinking this is the last it ..

I was treated to afternoon tea as a birthday treat, it was all perfect freshly made sandwiches and home made cakes, the lemon cheesecake is wonderful, lovely friendly hosts, we were determined to eat everything and we did just,although you can take home anything you can't manage. It's a sweet tea room with some nice gifts on display, we will definitely return

This was my 3rd visit but 1st time for afternoon tea, it was fabulous. Lovely selection of finger sandwiches on brown and white bread. Beautiful light scone with loads of jam and cream and also small lemon cheesecake, small Victoria sponge and slice of chocolate cake (all homemade) all washed down with two cups of cappuccino. Lovely warm welcome and nothing too much trouble. Look forward to returning to try the new inbetweener afternoon tea (mixture of sweet and savoury) yum

I took my daughter and her children to Something Special for afternoon tea. My daughter has been diagnosed with Coeliac for about 17yrs and even in this day and age still struggles with eating out as there generally isn't a great deal she can eat on the menu.

Stopped here on a motorcycle day trip for a late breakfast. Really good quality across the board. Good local produce, tomatoes were cherry tomatoes (roasted?) Perfect quantities and well presented. Coffee was good too. Service great.

Had been invited to a friends for dinner and I had suggested I bring dessert. After trying to find a local deli that sold homemade cakes Something Special was my final resort and what a find it was. It was past 3pm on a Saturday and still the place was busy with people having afternoon teas (which looked amazing) although they didn’t have a full cake for me to buy in their fridge luckily they had baked earlier that morning and without any hesitation or fuss got to icing this amazing chocolate orange cake for me. I am not the fondest of chocolate cake but I can’t tell you how good this cake was!! It was out of this world!!! Everyone at the dinner party loved it and I can’t thank them enough for getting me out a sticky situation. Thank you thank you I will definitely recommend to everyone I know. What a very special place in our village.

Went with friends as a belated birthday treat. It was fabulous. The sandwiches were freshly made with lovely fillings. The cakes, also homemade, were light especially the chocolate brownie cake!! The huge scone with raspberry jam and cream was gorgeous too. Add to that plentiful tea, attentive service and good company and you have a wonderful experience in this homely, welcoming, calm cafe. We will definitely return!

Came here today for afternoon tea with my friend and my daughter. My daughter had a sandwich and a slice of cake rather than the afternoon tea as she’s slightly fussy but thoroughly enjoyed her food.

Whilst out and about and scrolling through FB, we saw a status update from 'Something Special' - Today's cake - After 8 cheesecake! Say no more, we hot footed it straight over to grab some to takeaway.

The OH and I came out to try this cafe after reading good reviews on FB. We were not disappointed. Great menu with loads of interesting stuff for breakfast, lunch and tea. I had a lovely huge piece of fresh cream and strawberry sponge and OH had a fantastic Lincolnshire Platter (like a ploughman's, but with local specialities like Lincolnshire Poacher, stuffed chine and haslet). The plate was enormous! the pot of tea for two was generously sized. We will be back - very good indeed.

Read so many great reviews just had to give it a try and we were not disappointed. Lovely little place the sandwiches are lovely really nice fillings. The cakes are just yummy, we couldn’t manage them all so we took them home with us. Definitely worth a visit. Would recommend booking.

This is a great little find, really excellent afternoon tea. Sally couldn't do enough for you, we had one Gluten Free afternoon tea and three children in our party (one infant). They don't have many covers so I would advise pre- booking. The whole think was a great alternative to a family dinner, its early enough for the children to be wide awake. Well worth avisit.

I recently visited with my friends and the staff were more than accommodating, moving a chair out of the way to ensure my friends pushchair fit. We visited on a Saturday and it was quite busy with people coming and going but when we arrived at 11.45am, there were a few tables free.

We had a baby shower at Something Special. The food was gorgeous! Bread so soft, scones delicious with fresh and moist cakes! Lovely intermate afternoon with friends! Will defiantly recommend to anyone!

Sally and her team provided a wonderful buffet for my husband's 60th birthday party at home. The quality, quantity and presentation was brilliant and Sally was so obliging as I changed my mind on a couple of items on the menu and she didn't mind at all. Sally even delivered the buffet to us at home, even though I had offered to collect it from the café.

Came here for a quick catch up with family and whilst we hadn’t booked and they were busy, they were very inviting and got a table ready for us quickly. They were very patient as well, as we waited for someone else to arrive.

We have been to this Cafe a couple of time now over the past few weeks. We have found a right little gem. The food is excellent and good value for money. The staff are very helpful and friendly. We will deffently be using more often.

What an absolute pleasure to have this little gem in our doorstep, been a few times now, today a party of 6 we went for afternoon tea and wasn’t disappointed, food was delicious as always, never ending pots of tea, and staff was lovely as always especially Carl!!! Thought we would call in for a bite to eat here as we knew that it had changed hands and what a difference.the 2 ladies in there were very nice and chatty to the grandchildren.we ordered our meal and how lovely it all looked,we all ordered something different and we all couldn’t get over how nice it all was.i had the fried breakfast and it was huge and not at all oily and fatty,looked so nice on the plate,should have taken a picture really,lol.it tasted great too we all said how nice it was.we booked up for a small 18th birthday party for our daughter for 11 people while we was there as the lady makes birthday cakes too.if you are in the area you must go as prices are very reasonable too.

As soon as we opened the door, the cosy atmosphere drew us inside this wonderful little tea shop. There is a good selection of tasteful delights to choose from. We had a ham and cheese toastie that came with side salad, crisps and a pot of coleslaw. It was as delicious as it looked! We caught sight of meals served to other tables and decided to 'try that' next time! It is nicely decorated, clean and tidy. The staff are friendly and helpful. It is the kind of place where you enter a stranger and leave as a friend.

Spalding has been in dire need of 'Something Special' for a long time!! This is owned and run by a lovely lady called Sally who is dedicated to providing her customers with the most delicious homemade cakes and savoury lovelies. Their quiche is so scrummy and the portions are very generous. I've sampled their afternoon tea twice and had lunch there and have never been disappointed. The staff are very friendly and attentive. If you can't eat everything, they are happy to pack it up for you to take home. Overall, this is a fantastic place to eat. It's a shame the ratings are only 5 stars..they deserve more!!!

Have been a couple of times now and it’s been 10 out of 10 both times. Can not fault anything. Service was brilliant, food was delicious. Well run establishment with very lovely and welcoming staff. 1st visit was for a breakfast bap and cake, last visit was a full English. Can see why it’s so busy. We have already booked to come back to sample there afternoon tea which we have heard nothing but good things about. Would highly recommend this place.

We had reserved a table which is a good idea as we came on Friday and was pretty busy . The staff were very friendly, patient and ensured we were happy with the afternoon tea. If you go there I suggest you do not each too much before going. There is an array of fresh sandwiches,3 different types of mini cakes loved the cheesecake. and then scone with jam and cream. We were given a takeaway box as couldnt manage it all. I strongly recommend a visit here, this is our first and certainly won’t be our last. They do have a menu of other foods and shop has lovely Xmas decorations and hampers to purchase. I bought a lovely wooden reindeer. Thank you again keep up the excellent work

I came here with my baby daughter. The food was absolutely delicious and coffee very tasty. Unfortunately I didn't have any room for a pudding which is a shame, as they looked out of this world! Definitely will be visiting again and hoping to come for afternoon tea one day - such a shame I live a way away as I'd visit all the time. Definitely worth the trek though!

My wife and I popped in whilst having a walk around the village. There was a lovely warm welcome and the atmosphere, decoration and comfy seating made this a great choice. A drink and a cake each was ordered, which arrived in a timely fashion. Me being a cold drinker, cannot comment on the diet coke, other than it was cold. My wife had a coffee, which she assures me was very nice. The cakes were delicious and for the price, put some of the chain establishments to shame.

Just called in passing for a cup of tea (which included sumptuous scones with jam and cream). What a little gem- beautifully decorated and pleasant staff. Think the scones must have been made a few minuted before. GHpoe to be back this way again soon.

Visited here for a catch up lunch with a friend. We arrived around 12:30 & was virtually full. Luckily someone was just leaving so we quickly sat down. A pleasant lady came to take our order. It wasn’t long before the drinks arrived quickly followed by our food. Absolutely amazing. The quality of the food was fantastic & tasted delicious. The cafe itself is very clean & inviting. I will definitely return but I think next time I will ring to see if I can reserve a table so I don’t miss out!!!!!

Heard quite a lot about Something Special - just a ten minute drive away from me. Decided to try out the Cream Tea. I must say that the area needed an establishment like this. It does come across that the owner and her staff are pleasant, caring, and passionate about their food and service and I really hope that the family run business is a success.
