Solway lodge hotel resturant in Dumfries & Galloway

Stayed here for 2 nights B+B. The first thing we noticed was that the hotel was clean, that's always the first thing we look for. The staff were really helpful and professional, always a bonus. Now to the food, it was amazing and particularly good value. Had breakfast and evening meal on both days of our stay. We cannot recommend this place highly enough.

Our usual hotel along this road has since stopped trading , so we chose this one for our return trip from Scotland to winchester . Staff are really helpful and the hotel is larger than it looks from the road . Reception leads off to a large bar area and also dining room .. we were a.located one of the chalets thy stand separate from the main hotel . From the outside they look like a holiday camp chalet and I admit I groaned . But once inside they are compact and cosy .. newly revamped by the look of it . A really lovely bathroom and large shower , all gleaming clean and sparkling . Twin beds which are comfy , bedding that is crisp and clean . Carpets are clean , shelves are clean , everything was spotless . Paid £84 including breakfast , which is a bargain , seeing as we paid well over £100 for another hotel along the same road on the first leg of our trip , and it didn’t include breakfast ( read my other review on that one ! ) we do this trip from winchester to Scotland once a year for holiday , stopping in Gretna . I will def be using this hotel again and would recommend it 100%

Arrived and was served with a drink by a very nice lady. We were then showed to a table in the food hall as we were there for a meal. A young lady got us drinks and took our order. Everything up to this point was as you would expect in any food place. Good service and pleasant staff. Then when the food came HEAVEN! I had the Haggis tower starter (When in scotland......) and enjoyed every single last bit, I didn't want it to end. And for main I had haggis chicken and chips, I will say they are frozen chips not homemade, again the chicken haggis was absolutely gorgeous. The portion was huge I think my chicken must had been called Kate Price if you get my drift. I was very happily bloated after this delicious meal. Stayed for another drink and left very bloated and very full. TBH I doubt I will ever be in this area again but if I am I will 100% be back. My only, very slight, criticism would be not home made chips. 2 starters, 2 mains, 6 pints just under £70, so great value too. Dogs are allowed in the bar area which is cool with me as I love dogs. :)

Ate here as recommended by near by guest house. The food was very enjoyable, special shout out for The Balmoral Chicken. Service was OK, one young lady doing most of it, while others not paying much attention. Dining room a bit dated, but please overlook this and enjoy a good meal at reasonable prices.

Last night of an extended NC500 trip was spent at the BoJangles guest house (see separate review) and we needed somewhere close by to eat. We’d read good things about Solway Lodge online and it was very close by. First impressions weren’t that good though as the building looks as if it could do with a bit of sprucing up. The entrance is around the back of the building and it was unclear as to where we ought to go - we didn’t really want the formality of the dining room and simply wanted a bar meal. There’s an odd space between the dining room and the lounge bar that I couldn’t quite figure out - is it used as a dance floor for events (it is Gretna after all) or was it a kind of dead zone that the owners aren’t quite sure what to do with yet? The overall vibe I got from the place was that of a “working man’s club” - a sort of Phoenix Nights Gretna style. Luckily a member of staff found us a table in the lounge bar and drinks were offered immediately. Whilst local beers were sparse, they had Staropramen on tap so all was not lost. We’d already looked at the menu online, but this is clearly out of date and some dishes were no longer on the menu (shame as I quite fancied the chilli in a tortilla bowl). As it was our last night on Scottish soil I chose the haggis, bacon, cheeseburger. When it came out I wasn’t sure where to start - it was a tall stack skewered through the middle and topped off with battered onion rings. It was delicious, the flavour and texture of the haggis blending well with the tender beef. My wife chose the beer battered haddock and chips and this too was a sizeable portion. So our initial impressions based on the appearance and ambiance of the place were soon forgotten by the friendly and efficient staff and the excellent food (I now understand the owner is a chef !) If you’re in Gretna and want to try simple well cooked and well presented food you could do a lot worse than the Solway Lodge.

Stopped in on the way home from Stratford. A very friendly team welcomed us to the hotel restaurant. Extensive menu with freshly prepared fare. Food was excellent. If you are stopping at Gretna, this is the place to be.

Stayed for one night. Stayed in a family room so space was tight. Room clean and good condition. Although the thermostat on the shower not working. We had the Sunday Roast which was large proportions and excellent value for the price. Breakfast was okay. Appeared to be deep fried. And chef not on shift. Whilst service was always very friendly the staffing was minimal. Possibly to do with the time of year. It’s a 3 star hotel so don’t expect luxury, but you do get a warm welcome and courtesy throughout your stay.

Just been for a meal with my wife ! Whilst i cannot fault the food we was subjected to approx 8 13-17 year olds be allowed to come in and sit at the next table being extremely loud , not buying anything ,snorting loudly which i asked the lad did he want my napkin to blow his nose which he wasn’t to happy about , the staff were reluctant and didnt know how to deal with them ? This totally ruined our meal and brought our week long holiday to a sad end infairness !

We came for a meal and a few drinks. Meal was pretty average, I had fish, looked like it was frozen but it was ok. The prices are reasonable and they had some nice beers on tap, just don’t expect fine dining ! The staff were friendly enough.

Arrived for a family (5) meal at 12 noon, two courses each and we were still waiting for pudding at 2pm! Very slow service with one out of 3 waitresses interested. Food very mediocre and looked like bought in frozen rather than fresh. They obviously cater well for the elderly looking for a cheap Sunday roast, otherwise I would avoid if looking for good quality nutritious dishes.

Stayed here last night and omg absolutely lovely place. Staff were so friendly and welcoming and nothing was too much trouble, the rooms were absolutely lovely and clean, spacious and had everything you need in them. Breakfast this morning was really nice with quite a choice of hot food and cereals and juices along with plenty of toast, jams and marmalades. For the price we paid I would absolutely recommend Solway Lodge.

Having stopped in for a change of restaurants we were so very surprised at the variety of choices available. They ranged from basic meals menu to the more exotic. The staff as usual overworked due to staff shortages were above and beyond, well organised, professional and polite.The quality of the food was 1st Class as was the well stocked Bar. We have just had a lovely 4 Day stay. The hotel is situated approx a half mile from the famous Gretna Gateway experience ,a short 10 minute 'stroll , also due to my wife and myself being in our 80,s we took advantage of our Bus passes and had 2 great Days out at Carlisle and Dumfries which gave me a break from driving, this was made easy for us due to the Bus stops with up to date timetables right outside the Hotel ,one side for each destination. this was a made to measure break for us. A return visit is on the cards soon.

Staying at a B&B down the road so called in for an evening meal . Booked for 6pm . Not many in but started to fill up after a while . I ordered the Cumberland ham and Grilled pineapple, Husband ordered the Chicken curry . We hadn’t eaten there before so we didn’t know to order the small portion . It was delicious, a little bit too much for me to eat , it came with chips and salad ( which was fine) then a boat with cauliflower broccoli and carrots came along . Too much really , but it was lovely. Husbands curry was tasty and plentiful If we returned to the area we would definitely eat there again , but order the smaller portions. Staff were nice , helpful and attentive

Excellent food as usual however they didn’t have our booking and we where placed at a table adjacent to function suite having the door continually opened at one of our parties back. The better table at the window we asked for was refused as it was booked despite our pointing out we also booked. The table at the window remained empty the entire time of our meal and no one appeared so possibly our booking was registered under a wrong name. Although the name recorded had no similarities to ours. That stated the meal was excellent, good value with pleasant staff, although young they appeared to try hard but inexperience showed. That aside we all need to learn growing experience it was a pity there was no obvious more experienced staff to mentor them. Despite these negative issues I would still recommend the venue, as worth a visit.

Once again stayed at Solway hotel on way to Oban and back home.Great room .Huge breakfast and sausages for the dogs.See you next year.

Popped in for a coffee after a previous bad experience...everyone deserves a second chance etc. Big mistake! The foul tasting brown liquid that was served as coffee was enough for us to flee and we'll avoid in the future.

We was staying in the area with friends staying in this hotel. We received a great welcome and nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent. Non residents made very welcome in the bar.

Booked this place for a convenient place to stop whilst heading South. The staff were lovely and accommodating as travelling with our dog. The room was comfortable even if a little dated with a squeaky bed. We only had breakfast and ordered just a sausage on a roll but the menu was extensive. A little sausage for the dog was a lovely touch too. All round great value for money.

Group of 8. Restaurant wasn't too busy. The food really was delicious. Service was prompt and food all arrived at the same time. The food was all very fresh and we honestly couldn't fault it. Portions were plentiful including the desserts.

We've just had our wedding in Gretna. And stayed at the solway Lodge, we can't thank you enough for the lovely time we had staff were amazing and couldn't do enough for us, the meal was amazing and an excellent choice, can't praise the place enough would certainly recommend it

Beyond disappointed with our meal, was recommended to us and thought we’d scout for friends wedding. Waited ages for drinks, miserable barman. Food was hot....that’s the only good thing I can say. Frozen fish, frozen chips, ready meal type lasagne. Complained to girl serving who apologised but nothing off bill, should have asked but just wanted out. Spoiled our last night. Two minutes from the motorway Solway lodge hotel 2 minutes from Gateway in Gretna on Annan road ,save money because it is very reasonably priced,great food,great menu and good service and had prices not as steep as some. Give it a try keep a small local business going against the big rip off merchants.

Had a lovely meal here Monday night. I had liver and bacon and my hubby had cheese burger home made. Both meals very large small helpings available for some dishes. Both dishes were gorgeous well presented and piping hot. We had cheesecake and lemon pie to follow. Service was excellent food lovely would certainly go back and would certainly recommend. Well done

The restaurant food was basic fare but it was edible and filling. The veg being put in a separate dish is a waste, it would be better putting it on your plate. The children enjoyed their meals but were slightly disappointed because their choice of ice cream characters weren’t available. The price for 6 adults and 3 children with some desserts and drinks was reasonable.

Ate here when stayimng at this hotel recently. It has an extensive Pub Grub menu, choice of portion size and friendly staff. Food we had was good, and beware large portion sizes.

We were forced to eat here as many places seem to close in Gretna on Monday/Tuesday evenings and the only other venue open (Greens) we found a bit 'average' for food. But ended up a great 'Hobsons' choice - Excellent food and fantastic service from a bevy of lovely Scottish lassies. Good value too.

We wanted really good food in a nice setting as our contribution to the special day of two old friends who had travelled to Gretna to get married. We don't know the area at all and live quite some distance away, so we used Tripadvisor's reviews and ratings to help us pick somewhere for lunch. What a mistake we made in choosing Solway Lodge!

The menu offers quite a range of different of dishes and between us we tried quite a few. The food was top notch with service to match. Nothing was too much trouble for staff. Would happily come here again.

First into an empty dining room was a bit worrying. Lounge bar was full of people having meals though so that made us feel a bit better. Wasn’t long before many other patrons joined us in the dining room.

Have visited here a few times when in the area as my Dad lives close by and comes here most Sundays.

We have visited the Solway Lodge alot over the years, always pleasant staff and very attentive. Wide variety on the menu and do smaller portions of some of the dishes for people who want a light bite. Delicious food everytime. Firm family favourite of ours.

We’d been staying in another hotel and passing the Solway hotel we noticed you can dine even if not resident. So glad we did! The restaurant was nice bright and clean. Waiting staff friendly. Food was really good. We had goats cheese salad and chicken goujons. Followed by Sirloin steak with pepper sauce. Everything was good including the prices.

We dined here midweek when up Gretna for a family wedding ..... I’m always dubious when I enter a restaurant and the place was empty .... but we were here, so let’s eat .... a good selection of starters and mains to suit all palettes ..... Being as I was in Scotland I went straight for the Haggis and Bacon starter , it’s was listed as Sliced Haggis served on a potato Rossi and topped with bacon, drizzled with creamy whole grain mustard sauce ..... I’m not sure what I expected .... but it certainly wasn’t a single slice of haggis (might of been black pudding), a rasher of bacon and a hash brown... the sauce was very nice though.... for main I had the Tender topside of beef with the trimmings ... it’s was OK ... brought out swimming in gravy .... I admit I expected more than food with the equivalent to budget chain pub meals .... It was reasonably priced at £42 per couple....

After a worrying start on our arrival to Gretna we came across solway lodge hotel. 4 of us enjoyed a lovely few hours chatting and enjoying hospitality before we ordered our meals. Our meals were delicious and great value for money and the service was second to none and friendly. Very enjoyable time.

Always visit here on both directions from England to Scotland. Best food in the area.. would not stop anywhere else.. hence this time on way home food was just warm and not hot.. but that would not stop me from returning as usually it's perfect.

Are as family of 3. Barman cheerful and helpful, gorgeous main meal- perfectly cooked meat in the pie, with good selection of vegetables. Agree with comments for more desert options, but would definitely eat here again if in the area.

Called in for an evening bite to eat with the hubster, we were quite hungry and thought a main and pud would be the order of the day. Well after much deliberation we both plumped for cheeseburger and chips - don't be fooled this is no ordinary burger and chips, it was mahoosive! Best quality beef and ooh so tasty, cooked to order but we didn't have to wait long, we sat in the pleasant bar and had a dri.nk - for those drivers they do 0% lager too. A good selection of food was available as well as a specials list. Well that burger was totally delicious served with lovely hot fresh and a nice side salad. Unfortunately i cannot comment on the pudding only because I was so full I couldn't fit one in disappointing as they sounded delicious. Fantastic value too, I would happily go back and try some other things. Clean and tidy plenty of room and smiling service, fantastic big portions and family friendly too.

We ate here on two nights while we were staying in Gretna. Both nights the food was excellent and so was the service. There was lots of choice on the menu and you could eat in the bar or the dining room.

Staying in the area overnight saturday tea time we called in they where very busy but managed to fit us in and we are glad they did all the staff are very friendly and attentive the food is excellent would definitely go again

We stopped at Solway for 2 nights, 8-9 July which was Sunday/Monday. We were attending our friends wedding and stopped with them there as they brought their dogs and this hotel has dog friendly rooms. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful. It was extremely warm and I had brought a hamper for my friends to go into their room and before I even said anything they asked if I wanted it to be put into their room prior to their arrival on Monday and that they would keep it in their cold room beforehand - excellent and thoughtful!

We decided to try this place while out and about. Clean and tidy outside and we made a good choice. Staff friendly, food hot and tasty. I had chicken Balmoral and wife had roast beef, she said the beef was very tasty and nicely cooked. Although we hadn't booked we were made to feel welcome. Nice little place.

Had a really good meal from a menu with lots of choice of starters and mains - could do a little more imagination for deserts - but reasonable

Took my husband for a bar meal for his birthday . Unknown to us. Our son had been in and spoke to them . We went in to find a table was set for us . 3 course meal drinks . Service was brilliant . Fiona was very attentive to us. Serving meals drinks . It made us have a very good time. It was busy but did not hold anything up. We had a really good time . We will be back

We called here for lunch before hitting Gretna Gateway the three of us all had different meals and were not disappointed with any of them, very reasonable prices staff friendly and food arrived quickly will definitely be back

We had a party of 10 on Saturday evening for a wedding night meal, we reserved a table and was seated quickly with no fuss, the starters were amazing we all had something different and we was all very impressed, however the main meals were very disappointing scampi was over cooked and the lasagne was full of grease the pork was dry and we were all unimpressed as the starters were so good, the puddings were good however the ice cream to the banana boats was cheap and wasn't worth the 4.75 it's not overpriced it just needs a little more effort to be put into the meals, oh and sack the Sunday singer he's dreadful and we're not the only ones to think it sorry ;)

Starter of mushrooms ,brought right out of the freezer served with undressed salad for me Starter of mozzarella cheese sticks right out of the freezer with undressed salad for him.Main course of 2 portions of haddock and chips again right from the freezer into the fryer ,with a boring salad of lettuce tomatoes a piece of cucumber with no dressing .Absolutely dreadful meal in dreary surroundings .We shall never be back .If it's the chef's day off .CLOSE THE RESTAURANT,!

A late booking when staying in town, the Solway Lodge hotel restaurant proved an excellent find. Substantial main course portions (small lamb and beef more than enough for myself and friends) together with large deserts (roulade and chic fudge cake both with ice cream plenty to share between four) washed down with a well priced white wine, beer and soft drink all for less than £50. The restaurant was impeccably clean and the waiting staff friendly but polite at all times. To be recommended if you find yourself in Gretna.

Tuesday evening meal in the Resturant. Clean tables, nicely presented food and piping hot. 2 x main, 1 x sweet, 1 x coffee plus bottle of wine (+tip) = £49. No cold Prosecco, no Pinot Grigio Rose, no Shiraz, no Rioja and 'house red' not particularly nice!Service good.

arrived off the street as we parked up at local campsite n walked 1km to hotel food was fantastic just what we wanted after eating fast food most of the weekend after car fest north. well done all involved at hotel we will be back

We stayed next door and the landlady recommended the Solway for food, good call.Although there was a wedding in the function room, we were well looked after

We ate here twice once at dinner time and once at tea time. Both occasions were absolutely spot on. The choice is fantastic something for everyone even our fussy eaters. The quality of the food was excellent and the portion sizes are huge. What's good is you can order half portions which some of our party had which if you've had a starter or you just don't est a lot is perfect. Definitely recommend this restaurant and we will be returning

Best part of the experience was our great server / bartender. Perhaps I should have had the Balmoral Chicken as he suggested as my roast beef meal was mediocre at best. My wife had the chicken pie and was also passable. That said. Ample menu, nice ambience and great service.

Visited with my 7 year old son as we were staying in a local bed & breakfast and they recommended​ it as being excellent food and child friendly.Lovely restaurant and bar area, spotlessly clean and really warm and friendly staff.Very reasonably priced, excellent food with generous portions and would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Recommended by B&B owners we walked to the Solway Lodge to find an excellent range of food on the menu. Reasonably priced, freshly cooked, and hot plates - justhat was needed after a long drive.

Checked trip adviser and found good reviews on this place so chose it rather than nearer restaurants. Great choice! Went for dinner and service was great. Young restaurant and bar staff but very aware of good customer service requirements. Food excellent too. Well worth a visit if in the area

We stayed at Gretna Chase for my daughter's wedding in September 2009 and were delighted with the hotel. It wasn't their first choice but I am so glad that that one was fully booked ! The rooms in this hotel are very big, clean and you are provided with all you could need. staff lovely

Fantastic place to stay and outstanding food at a reasonable cost, recently had my wedding party here, the staff were all amazing. They excelled themselves as regards cooking the food and serving the food and making everything go as planed. I am so glad I picked the solway because I wasn't disappointed at all, even the locals were welcoming with one chap playing his harmonica for us which made our day extra special. Top marks to the solway and all who make the business great and entertaining.

Popped in for a drink on our first visit to Gretna , we ended up eating in the bar and food was great. The bar prices were also decent and liked the fact you can get smaller portions. Nice bar with hard working staff as considering it got really busy they were on the ball. Would highly recommend and will visit again.

Had evening meal was well presented, served piping hot, enjoyed by all, with a very ideal children's menu, children's portion was an appropriate portion, not too daunting for them.

Excellent food served in relaxing surrounding always with a very warm welcome. Never had a bad meal and always lovely and hot with good quality ingredients
