Society Standard in Cardiff

I'll start this off by saying I love society standard, great venue and always a good atmosphere, however its clear that the company has low standards of food or there's no one on site ensuring the food standards are being upheld because it is always so disappointing! The Sunday lunch is just awful for the price and the gravy was like brown water last time, tough beef and tiny portions for a premium price, really bad. Our most visit we ordered calamari and mozarella and garlic flatbread, followed by two steaks. None of the staff ever seem pleased to see you, so you're almost never welcomed as they have their backs turned to you pulling pints or chatting amongst themselves. What we were brought was really shoddy- the flatbread was sliced supermarket white bread with garlic spread and Cheddar not mozzarella (£6 I might add, but can't have cost more than 70p to produce) The calamari was soft, cold and rubbery quite the feat to be overcooked yet feel undercooked at the same time, we didn't finish it and no one checked back or even asked if everything was alright as they took the plates away because they just don't care. Our waiter said the kitchen hadn't done us enough chips so we're sending a separate bowl, fair enough it happens, but what they sent out to accompany our steak and real chips was a bowl of skinny fries bit no apology. I might add that our bill came to over £74 and we were asked to pay a tip as we paid at the bar before even getting anything so I felt ripped off from the get go. Once again, I love the venue but it's always so disappointing recently - please hire a GM or head chef that cares otherwise this venue will be over soon enough.

First visit here and very impressed. Staff were so helpful and efficient. We had an issue as the half marathon was on and some of our party were struggling to get to the restaurant because of the road closures - this was no problem for the staff who were so understanding. When we eventually got together and had our food it was exceptional and such good value for money! Will definitely be back! Thanks guys xx

Disclaimer: didn’t get a chance to try the food so this review is purely based on the service. Walked in super excited to try this place but felt utterly uncomfortable in the (lack of) service I was given. It was our first time coming in and it was pretty obvious as we walked in, stood at the front waiting to be seen. The two members of staff were talking to eachother at the back and to make it easier for them, I mimed ‘should we just sit at any table’ to which they nodded. No menu was on the table so our heads were spinning trying to figure out how it works. It was pretty obvious we needed service. We got their attention and asked for a menu and got a dismissive ‘order at the bar’ response. At the bar, we were (un)welcomed by a staffs back. They must have noticed us at the corner of their eye and whilst they had their backs turned said ‘2secs’. Unprofessional and unwelcoming.

I’ve visited SS several time over the last few years. At times, I have tired of the menu as it’s not the healthiest but I have to say, I always have a good meal here. Highly recommend for a casual evening out with friends.

Came here on Sunday afternoon and ordered the beef roast. Everything tasted flavoursome and delicious, the only downsize it was lukewarm and we were hoping for a larger portion of cauliflower cheese (we both only had only one small piece on our plate, prehaps offer this as an extra side dish?). Service was great and nothing was too much trouble, and the lady read our minds by bringing us a jug of extra gravy. For dessert we ordered the pudding sundae (loved it) and the lemon posset (refreshing). Will definitely return to try there weekday menu!

First impressions were underwhelming. We were waiting for several minutes when we came in — the greeter was on the phone but no other staff around the bar acknowledged us either. The decor is very bare, which is evidently a design choice, but the furniture was uncomfortable and there was a hole in the concrete floor next to our table. Our table was also sticky and had a few crumbs on it, so obviously hadn’t been cleaned well. Our order was taken promptly but our drinks took 15 minutes to arrive and actually arrived after our food. The hot chocolate was great though! The roast itself was unfortunately the most disappointing part. It was only lukewarm on arrival. The beef was fatty and anaemic-looking, the potatoes looked more as though they’d been boiled (not crunchy at all), the carrots/parsnips were similarly textureless and the gravy was very runny and there was definitely not enough of it. I did enjoy the pickled cabbage but my partner thought it overwhelmed the rest of the meal. We also didn’t have any salt in the container of condiments provided to us and had to request more. We’d planned on getting dessert but bailed lest we were further disappointed. Definitely won’t be visiting this chain again.

Food was absolutely delicious. Restaurant had a nice atmosphere and it was nice to be able to watch the kitchen staff work and plate up the food. Weather was very warm and it was lovely to have all the front patio doors/windows open all the way. The only thing that drew away from this wonderful experience was the lack of gravy for the table and the difficulty in getting the attention of waiters to get more.

Always great service and good food, we are lucky to have this independent on our doorstep. They have a smaller menu than normal - the chicken wings are an absolute highlight .

As if selecting my dinner wasn't hard enough, choosing from what is a very enticing menu, the friendly waiting staff went and made my decision even harder by revealing that the catch of the day was moules mariniere! So the only option was to go for a full fish dinner of salt and pepper squid, moules and the furakake salad with garlic chilli prawns all shared between two. And it was all absolutely delicious, especially les moules. I've always had top notch food from the society standard, the quality of the food being consistently excellent. Good selection of drinks, lovely atmosphere and great service. A firm favourite.

Away from the centre, the rustic (read edgy) restaurant has a simple yet well created menu. Enjoyed the range of vegan options. Waitstaff were Very friendly, prices were very reasonable and it was a good atmosphere. Thank you xx

Have been for drinks / breakfast / coffee etc pre lockdown and has always been a nice experience. Went with family for a sunday roast yesterday and were really impressed with the quality of the food, atmosphere and friendly, accomodating staff in tricky circumstances at the moment. Everyone enjoyed and would happily return.

First time visiting this rustic feel cafe. I ordered a Falafel Salad Bowl with beetroot hummus, spinach, kale, tender stem broccoli and coleslaw also with a side of corn on the cob. Massive portions of falafel balls and very moorish too! It was very filling to the point I gave away some falafel to my daughter. She ordered chunky chips and the Standard Fish Finger Bun. Overall outcome... Delicious! No room for dessert. Maybe next time...

Visited for a Sunday dinner with family. I have to say I was very disappointed and quite embarrassed that I recommended this venue. When the restaurant first opened I had the most delicious beef and pork dinner. The vegetables were cooked to perfection. The dinner arrived with beautiful cauliflower cheese extra condiments extra gravy and was pipeing hot. This time around the pork had been removed replaced with chicken and beef. The beef was extremely fatty the chicken thigh over cooked dry and quite lumpy and texture. The vegetables were luke warm and the cauliflower removed. The entire meal I would describe as luke warm / cold. Not one of the table of 5 had a hot meal. There was no extra gravy, we had to ask for our pigs in blankets as non were on any of our plates and the waitress nearly acknowledged us let alone apologised. There were no offer of condiments or gravy very poor experience. Standards have definately slipped

Really great place to go for food in Cardiff. Nice vibe inside, friendly staff and really good food. We went for the burger with a mac n cheese fritter and it was amazing. The chips are also very nice. Not the cheapest place but worth it, huge portions too!

Worst breakfast in Cardiff hands down. Paid £26 for 2 breakfast and 2 coffees. Waited a long time for the coffees. Miserable staff. The breakfast was the worst I’ve ever tasted and it’s not cheap. The sausages tasted like perfume and the hash browns was the cheapest quality on the market. Please go elsewhere in the area and get a decent breakfast for half the price. Let down.

I recommended this place as the sunday dinners previously blew my socks off with caramalised shallots, crackling, mixed meats, and side dishes prapared beautifully. Unfortunately now they changed the pork and beef to chicken thighs and beef, no crackling, no side dishes, the parsnips and roasties were so raw. I was embarrassed that i recommended. The waiter advised everyone has complained about the changes. But bill still came to 44 quid which is steep for a bad roast. It was really special before. Massive shame.

Awful service. In particular, by a man who seemed to be the manager.Firstly, he made a huge song and dance about me ordering beans on toast for my two children because it wasn’t on the menu (toast was, and they do beans). Then he said he’d bring the two teas I ordered over straight away. 25 mins later, and after I reminded him, to which he responded that they had a “drinks backlog” (I’m not surprised. One lady was doing all the drinks while this guy didn’t seem to be doing much behind the bar). The food arrived 35 mins after ordering (they’d told us there would be a delay, 3 times in fact). I’d ordered a breakfast with no mushrooms. It came with mushrooms of course. ‍♂️The food was fairly average, but it filled the gap, and the wait didn’t really matter. The service, however, spoiled the whole experience. The chap who seemed to be the manager had a really unfortunate manner, not suited to a customer service role.Just to top it all off, as we walked out, my mother and I both said “thanks, bye”, despite things being generally a bit crap. Manager guy said nothing. Lovely.

Went for a lunch with a bunch of colleagues. Really swift service, decent prices and the food was really delicious and filling. I will return to try the many variants of beers and ciders on offer, shame I couldn't indulge when I went!

Have had Sunday lunch twice now with my family and have found it to be very good. Not cheap but they do give you a good amount and it is cooked well. Will return

We came here on a Wednesday night (supposedly quiet), ordered at the bar, had nice drinks (good cider on tap) and ordered the veg sharing board. The atmosphere was nice with street food place kind of feel.

Came here with my wife and daughter and her partner and enjoyed the evening. The food was very good and they had a excellent craft lager. It's the second time we have been here and they didn't disappoint. The atmosphere was good and chilled, service was good and everyone enjoyed.

Popped in for some snacks and a drink to catch up with some old university friends. Was really pleasantly surprised to find this really well presented venue in the middle of Maindy! Both my friend and I had the Mac and cheese topped fries and were really impressed. We both couldn’t finish our meals because we were so full by the end, definitely will be coming back to visit soon whenever I am in the area next!

A group of us (8) went to the Society Standard for Sunday Lunch. I personally went for the mixed meat roast for £16.50, the main reason I choose this was for the crackling.

We came here after seeing a few posts online about how great it was, and ordered a burger with pulled pork and cheese inside. The burger tasted great - the pulled pork was insane and all the food was cooked well, good portion sizes and service was quick. This place is quirky, with simple but thoughtful / rustic decor , providing a nice casual environment to enjoy some good food and drinks. The staff were friendly too. The only reason I haven’t given it 5 stars is as it’s not particularly cheap and isn’t the best burger I’ve ever had, however I will be visiting again to try more of the menu and would definitely still recommend :)

Je suis allé plusieurs fois dans ce pub agréable. Il y a un petit jardin au fond pour éviter le bruit de la circulation pendant les journées chaudes. Les cocktails sont pas mal et la nourriture est bonne pour un pub. Le service et l'ambiance offrent un bon cadre pour une soirée entre amis.

We popped for Sunday roast . Wow absolutely lush . Decor was quality. Staff were amazing, and the food was faultless. Go go go go . Worth a visit

We wondered on by and found this place. The seating may be basic but it has a great ambience.

Went here with a few friends. Had the small plates as a starter which was really big defiantly didn’t need one each and I’m pretty greedy! We all then had a Sunday dinner, I had the beef. It came with roasted parsnips and carrots, roasted potatoes, green cabbage, white cabbage, butter nut squash, Yorkshire pudding and a shallot. The beef was amazing really nicely done and defiantly not chewy like I’ve had in other places. The only tiny thing that was disappointing is the gravy was very thin but aside from that fab visit. Not a cheap meal but in my opinion worth the money would go back again

Basic interior, plain brick walls and exposed iron girders etc but very good food.

Visited here with friends on a midweek evening. Lovely burger and fries complemented with some drinks. Nice atmosphere all round and would certainly recommend.

Had a fantastic experience at Society Standard, ordered the full rack of Bbq ribs, and I must say I was thoroughly impressed, our waitress was very friendly and helpful with suggestions which really elevated the experience, overall I'd highly recommend the establishment

Ordered the Vegan Meze to share with my vegan gf - I’m a hardcore meat eater. I wasn’t expecting it to rank high flavour wise, but it definitely surpassed my expectations. It was bursting with flavour in every bite and left be full but didn’t give me the “too full” feeling.

We booked this restaurant for my birthday, and had a disappointing roast dinner! For £16 the portion was decent just over priced. The meat was lovely cannot fault that, the veg was abit bland and roast potatoes soggy. The biggest let down by far was the califlour cheese which was cheesy leeks with one floret in it. The table ordered separately (different tabs) assuming we’d received one each - WRONG - we receive one between the three. Upon asking a member of staff she said there policy was one side dish per 3 and that if we had wanted a refil of the side dish they would have of course be happy to oblige.

We had the tapas menu, fantastic portions, service, all so happy and helpful. some things were a little pricey for what they were, I would pay it again as atmosphere and customers withing venue were lovely.

Standard full & veggie breakfast - all food cooked well and very clean. Variety of choices on the breakfast menu Nice vibe and rustic look plus can see the chefs preparing the food.

I've been here for an evening meal and for Sunday lunch, and both experiences were fantastic. The evening meal was delicious, with lots of choice on the menu and specials on the specials board. The cocktails are tasty, and 2 for 1 if you order the same cocktail. My boyfriend and I shared a camembert to start, and then I had the mussels (from the specials board). They were absolutely gorgeous and tasted exactly like moules marinières from France. When I came for Sunday lunch, it was just as good. Although it seems quite pricey at £14.50 for a roast beef dinner, you really do get a lot of food for your money, and it was all delicious. The beef was cooked perfectly and there were plenty of veg and roast potatoes. I highly recommend a visit and will be returning in the future!

I visited Society Standard with some freinds after my shift at the Heath Hopsital. I opted for the Cuban sandwhich and it was delicious! However the seats are very hard and uncomfortable. I currently work as a Chiropractic nurse and can definitely say that these seats will cause you compressed intervertebral discs. The food is great and the restaurant is stylish but strained ligaments and bad back problems is a big price to pay for being stylish.

The Sunday lunch is only available from 1pm but it’s lovely. This was our first visit and opted for the warm breads to start, which is plenty to share, followed by the mixed meats for main.

Visited here for a leaving do a couple of weeks ago. What a lovely place. Staff were great. Very friendly. Service was swift. I only had a burger and chips but it was one of the best burgers I have ever had. The pulled pork loaded chips were stunning according to my wife. There was 18 of us and everyone complemented the quality of the food. Fresh and perfectly prepared. Will definitely visit again! Well done!

£8.50 for a bowl of 'dirty' fries. Basically a bowl of oven fries with mayo and BBQ. Everything on the menu overpriced! Awful

I often come down to Society Standard for Sunday lunches as they are very good quality. The staff are also very friendly. However the seats are so hard and umcomfortable it is torture. It somewhat resembles the spanish inquisition. Very good food and staff though and would recommend to anyone who aslong as they do not have back problems.

Visited with a group of people from work. I wasn’t keen on the industrial decor or the uncomfortable wooden chairs. It had the feel of a primary school classroom. Drinks are very expensive. Didn’t enjoy my meal. The Mac n Cheese was bland and the salad dull. However, the vast majority of people I was with thoroughly enjoyed their meals so I put it down to a bad choice. The meals were served in metal tins, which again, didn’t work for me.

Food was really very good and plenty of it - vegetarian choice amazing! It was like eating home cooked food and served in enamel dishes.

What lovely staff, especially the Assistant Manager. It was a bit cold and hard furniture doesn't help to make it comfortable. However lunch was very good. Jerk chicken, a pleasure. Fish pie lovely and beef terrific. Wine was good too. Overall a very nice place to eat and drink.

I booked a table for myself and 9 of my co workers last Monday for our Christmas do. The food was absolutely delicious, and the portions were particularly generous. I am a vegetarian, so I was impressed with the option of a Seitan roast - which was significantly tastier than a bog standard nut roast! Service was excellent and everyone left the restaurant feeling full up and happy. My only constructive criticism would be that myself and my co workers would have preferred to have table service when ordering drinks, as opposed to walking up to the bar and waiting. I will definitely be returning!

The food wasn’t worth the money but cooked well. It was the customer service that let this place down, poor management. The girl that served could really do with a session or 5 on how to speak to cudromers. Very rude and really let the whole place down. Wouldn’t be back for breakfast or recommend it to friends.

I was really impressed with the food and the service at Society Standard last night. The place was packed and there were 45 of us. The food was delicious, hot and timely. We did not have to wait more than about 7-10 minutes between courses. They were really efficient and hard working.

I went for a meal with 10 friends and it was superb, sometimes standards can slip once you get over 6 for dinner but that was not the case here. We had the festive menu and it did not disappoint. If you like your meat the turkey was seriously meaty.

I always enjoy coming here and it's very popular with locals. The food is on the pricier side for the area but is always tasty and satisfying. You won't go hungry and the menu is freshened up periodically. The drinks available are always good; in particular the IPAs available on tap are always excellent. Friendly team of staff running the place too. The venue itself is comfortable and spacious with a retro "industrial" feel and a really nice place to sit and eat/drink. Good for breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks, and family-friendly. Ticks all the boxes.

We are spoilt for choice for breakfast/brunch places in Cardiff but always find myself wanting to go to Society Standard. Good coffee, good food, good atmosphere!

I've visited previously for breakfast and lunch and have always found the staff super friendly. I went along with friends last night and found quite the opposite. One of the waitresses was clearly having a off day. She was extremely miserable and later on when clearing up loudly scraped all the chairs along the floor to tuck them under the table. We all found the whole customer service experience quite shocking. The food was excellent as always and it won't put me off going back. Hopefully it won't be her shift!

I use a mobility scooter. Level access to pavement. Staff or customers will open the door for me. Staff are friendly and helpful. Sometimes the kitchen is noisy but there is a lovely, lively atmosphere and good food. Accessible toilets. I haven't used the 'garden.'

A great local spot for lunch or a chilled evening with some friends. The Mac n cheese with king prawns is a must, and even better when your'e delicate from the night before!

Visited on a Monday evening, two for dinner. Restaurant was busier than expected for a Monday night. Decor was nice although the place was little dimly lit. We sat near the bar which was a bit cold due to the door to the beer garden being open.

Food is pretty good but a bit expensive, maybe more of a treat than an every day thing. Would still recommend though

I went for the small plates which are just a bit larger than typical tapas. We got 5 between 3 of us. The portion sizes were perfect and I probably could have fit either one more plate or dessert in, if it wasn’t so late and the kitchen was closed.

Had a meal in here for the very first time with my family, really impressed with the he meat platter we had with some side dishes. Atmosphere was great, good service, nice wine, excellent value for money. Heard from they do Sunday lunch, going to give this a go, you have to book for this though!!

Every time I come to this restaurant, it never fails to impress!!! The food is stunning, the staff are brill. Definitely need to go here if you want authentic food with a good vibe. We will always be back :) thanks guys x

On the plus side the cappuccino was good. But that was it. The table was sticky and whitchurch road isn't the best place to park but it was Sunday and we had no problems. You pay up front then give your table number. There were four of us and our friends had eaten there before. We had various food between us and I had a standard breakfast and my wife had avocados on toast plus a couple of sides. There were a couple of special requests ie well done bacon brown sauce rather than red (or on the side) for 3 of the meals. In every case the request was ignored and 2 of the meals went back. My wife's meal was appalling with a very thin spread of mashed avocado over burnt sour dough bread which was inedible. No one came to ask how the Meals were. I went up and ordered coffees and waited 25 minutes for them. The standard breakfast was average but portions were poor for 9.50 also the single sausage looked uncooked but I think it had been boiled to cook it. Bubble and squeak was a small lump of grated potato.

My friend suggested this for a lunch meet up and I have to say I was impressed! An entire section of the menu dedicated to mac n cheese too! I had the prawn mac and cheese and we share the dirty fries. I already can't wait to go back here. I'm taking my partner next time!

Visited here today for Sunday roast and was not disappointed! We did wait around 40/50 minutes for food (it was very busy) but it was worth every second waiting! Me and my boyfriend both had pork the couple we were with had beef and the vegetarian roast. It’s really difficult to find a roast that can compare to homemade but this came extremely close, absolutely stunning, will 10000% be back!

This was our second Sunday visit to this restaurant, returning because the Sunday lunch was so awesome last time. Brilliant menu for non-roast food too. Very well chosen selection of dishes, nicely cooked and with a friendly staff team.

We popped in for drinks on a hot summer's day and had cocktails in the outdoor area at the back. This is a very popular place and the cocktails were nice. Will try the food on our next visit.

We have eaten and drunk here on a number of occasions. The food is always good and fresh. Today we had coffee and pudding. The coffee is from Clifton Coffee Roasters, Bristol and top class.

Not sure what happened today but the food was really not to the standard of previous visits. The pancakes were definitely not 'American Style' and the dirty beans didn't have oven cooked tomatoes, although we were told they were chopped up. And we had to ask for toast that the menu suggested it came with. My Latte was cold, but this was replaced. And to top it off the baked eggs were over done so no runny york :( I appreciate that not every meal can be perfect but I just felt there was a lack of care and effort put into the food. We definitely won't be rushing back.

Came here for lunch, which was nice but expensive for what it was, Interior very " industrial " which I find quite cold and harsh. Sorry to say not a fan.

We visited Society Standard as a family to celebrate Father's day having not been to eat there before.

Been a fan of society standard for a while but this will be the last visit to this restaurant, ordered our food at 9:30pm ( stop Serving at 10pm) on a Saturday night to a man on the bar that had no time / interest in providing a service.

Second time I’ve been here now, the food is always great and comes out pretty swiftly. We had a chicken burger and a Mac and pork burger and dirty fries with two beers. Whole thing came to £30 which is extremely reasonable. The bar staff are always up for a joke and a laugh and the service is great. Only thing I’d say is cut a couple of quid off the cocktails and we’d have probably stayed longer! Haha

This is my work local. They always have space available. Nice interior decor. The range of foods is fun, varied and a decent size. The prices are also good for the amount of food you get. The restaurant is family friendly. There is no table service, everything is order from the bar. Downside, the service staff aren't great. You'll have to grab your own menus and seating. Staff aren't super happy when you approach the bar to place an order.

In and sat and ordered within 10 minutes of arrival. Food took another 30 mins to arrive to the table - a bit too long really, if you’re wondering where your food is then it’s too long. What was served was very tasty though! Didn’t stay for desert, as ran out of time, but shall visit again.

Food is tasty in general and but the roast is definitely over priced. When paying almost £15 for the beef, I would expect more than a couple of roast potatoes and would definitely want to be full by the end of it...unfortunately not!

Really liked the decor and ambience, especially watching chefs prep for the day ahead. Flat white coffee was one of the best I've ever had - strong and tasty. Breakfast food was mixed and prices higher than normal. The two standard breakfasts at just under £10 without a drink was pricey and not that good. Sausage needed a bit longer for my taste ( wasn't very well browned off), bacon, half tomato and mushrooms overdone, sourdough bread too oily to eat, whilst egg was perfect - watched plates sat under lamps waiting for the egg and other parts of order to finish so maybe that was part of the problem. Have had far better cooked breakfasts at half the price in other cafes. Avocado and eggs on toast and the smoky beans with pulled pork looked delicious.

Lovely little restaurant, friendly staff. Portions are a decent size and lovely Sunday roast and apple crumble defiantly worth a visit

Post run breakfast. I'd seen pictures so had try this place out and it was awesome - probably the best breakfast I've had. Really cool place too. Would love to live close to here. Best breakfast spot in Wales

Been thinking of coming for a while and finally did it last night. What a lovely little gem of a place. Reminded me of cool bars and bistros in New York. Friendly staff who worked hard. You get a view of the kitchen to see how hard they graft, plus other food coming out. We had the ribs and sides of mac and cheese and whitebait, all washed down with a selection of lovely cocktails. All in all, good food, good service at a good price too. Will be coming again.

WE had a meeting to go to at 6:30 which was not going to finish until 8:15 so needed somewhere open early evening on Whitchurch rd so popped in here for a light bite. Admittedly they were out of my partner's first choice of main course which was a real pity, this was made worse by the fact it was one of the few Vegan dishes. However not being a vegan she had the alternative. This was rated as delicious as were my course and both of our desserts. Good specials board however given it's location and potential clientele it could do with more Vegan options. Presentation and service both excellent

Went for midweek drinks and dinner with a friend and was blown away by the quality of the food. I had the rump steak, which was cooked to perfection and accompanied by a rich blue cheese sauce. Perfectly complimented by the chunky chips and tasty beers. Would highly recommend, size of the steak meant great value for money and service was top notch provided by friendly staff. Can't wait to visit again and try the other delicious looking stuff on the menu!

Went here for Sunday lunch. The food was horrible. The food arrive cold, the vegetables were limp and over cooked, the roast potatoes were like greasy boiled potatoes, the meat was chewy and fatty, the Yorkshire pudding was greasy and raw in parts, the gravy was like dirty dishwasher. It’s without a doubt one of the worst meals we have had. It was also overpriced! I would certainly avoid. There are so many wonderful places to try, don’t waste money here. It might have just been a bad day in the kitchen but it was so bad that I am not going to give it another try. Really disappointed!

It’s incredibly noisy and the restaurant has only a few customers, the noise is not the musak or the customers but staff clatter every piece of crockery and the kitchen staff throwing dishes and metal dishes around and dinging the bell for waiting staff who aren’t quick to respond .....

Avoid food, had burger and had to leave immediately as I had really bad gut pains and diarrhoea. Probably good social place if you could hear each other over music. Lights dimmed down early ? To avoid people seeing food? I will not be visiting again

We visit Society Standard on a weekly basis and have always found the staff friendly, the food good, the beers great, service excellent and the atmosphere cool and chilled.

We’re regulars and live just up the road.. we’r getting really tired of the kitchen running out of things or selling out even at lunch time.. there seems to be a big shortage of fish always and in the 12 months have never managed to have mussels you never have any.. esp short of food on Sunday’s.. getting a bit annoying as the menu doesn’t change very often and we’r constantly struggling to find things to eat.

Good staff, good selection of beers... But sadly food very poor and overpriced. Burgers bland, fried cold..

I have been here several times and sometimes it has been great, and other times slightly disappointing.

I've had variable experiences at this restaurant, but lunch last week was very disappointing. There was a lot going on with the food, but the overall taste was actually quite unpleasant - sometimes less is more. The chips were also undercooked. There are a lot of alternative venues close by which offer better value and (based on this recent visit) a better taste experience. On the plus side there are a lot of vegetarian options, and I have previously enjoyed visits here, so maybe this was just a bad day.

Nice atmosphere very pleasant restaurant .Enjoyed the food but servings were quite small . Good selections of wine and beers .

Really let down by my experience at society standard today. I’m never one to write a negative review, but it was such a let down. Neither mine or my friends burgers had any flavour, and they were so dry we didn’t finish them. We were sat right by the kitchen area and watching/listening to the chefs banging things around and being obnoxious; we could hardly hear eachother talk from across the table. in fact, one of the chefs was talking rudely about one of the blonde waitresses to the other chef; it was really uncomfortable. The decor on the inside is very cool and well thought out, but it seems to me that the main focus was on the aesthetic of the restaurant, rather than the quality of staff and food. Definitely would not recommend and will not be returning.

A lunchtime trip to Whitchurch road and my wife and I went for a stroll looking for somewhere we'd not been before. A unique setting, very rustic, urban setting, the bar has a huge selection of gins and the menu includes breakfast as well as lunch and evening meals. A good selection of vegetarian and vegan options. My wife as a vegan was impressed with the choices and the portions were perfect, avoiding the tendency to load piles of food, so we didn't have to feel guilty for leaving any as our plates were empty. I have to say I'm not say big fan of eating food from a wooden board but I wouldn't say this place is pretentious, just good honest food. Service was great, you order food from the bar and set up a tab or pay up front. Atmosphere was great, it wasn't very busy at the time, but the hustle bustle form the kitchen made it lively and not so loud as to interrupt conversation. Also, as a pre-christmas visit I was pleased they resisted the temptation to blast out christmas music. Will definitely return one evening to test the gin store.

The wife and I stopped off here on Saturday for brunch. The usual great atmosphere with the friendly and welcoming staff was ever present. We grabbed a seat, made our order and soon enough our brunch of the Standard Breakfast and the avocado on toast for my wife came along. To accompany our food, we ordered an Americano with hot milk and a mango juice.

Great place with an urban hipster feel. Good coffee and teas. Craft beers available. Nice environment to meet with friends. Great to look into the kitchen to see food prep.
