Skosh in York

We had the most beautiful lunch at Skosh to celebrate my husband’s birthday. We’ve been wanting to go for ages and it was well worth the wait. We had a table at the kitchen bar which was a real treat. The food was exceptional, (especially the brill sashimi and the glorious mango lassi and saffron custard donuts). The service was friendly and attentive without being over bearing….what a lovely way to spend an afternoon.

The most remarkable meal we have had in a long time. From the minute we arrived to the minute we left the experience was magnificent. The wait staff were world class, totally knew their product and extremely attentive. Sitting at the open kitchen (which is a must btw) was pure theatre. The chefs were so well organised, calm and so very knowledgeable. A brilliant experience and would DEFINITELY recommend!

I visited in June 2023 Skosh is a place I had been eager to visit for a long time. We lived out of the country for a while so the opportunity never came. When we moved back it was a high priority, and it exceeded all expectations. Go! The Good -The food. As with all the greatest restaurants, the food does the talking. The menu is mostly made up from small plates. Choose 5 or 6 to share, and allow the chefs to showcase their talents. Incredible. -Location. Set in the heart of York, a short walk from the station -Staff. Friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. This is a relaxed place, suited for soaking up the atmosphere of the open kitchen. -Atmosphere... as I was saying. When it gets busy there's a lovely gentle bustle and buzz to the place. Had the most amazing time here. The service (including communication via email) was superb. The restaurant is cosy and intimate. The head chef is visible.. as are his staff... so amazing to see everything being created. The food is top-notch. 1 Mich 🌟... should be more. The menu is fresh... creative.. inventive and exciting. Fresh food... provenance clear to see. The best food I have ever eaten/experienced. The smile/contentment on my face was captured on my wife's phone! This is the number one place to eat at in York. An experience.

Food is on another level. Good selection of drinks. Always come away amazed. Friendly staff, casual atmosphere. It's not cheap but I consider it excellent value given the quality, especially when compared to what's on offer from other fine dining restaurants. Book well in advance to avoid disappointment. A brilliant restaurant, with beautiful food. Can't say a bad word about it other than it's too posh to get some bread to mop up every last bit.

Extremely enjoyable dining experience. Although very busy, we never once felt rushed, each and every flavour could be enjoyed and didn’t get overwhelmed with others. We have visited quite a few Michelin starred restaurants over the years up and down the country; we would certainly put Skosh in front of most of them. Staff were attentive and knowledgeable. The attention to detail with both the food and drink is incredible. Highly recommend

Very good food and great selection of wines at this friendly Michelin bib gourmand restaurant. Excellent value for money. Highlights were the hens eggs, lamb dumplings, and calamari. Potato tower is a must.

Absolutely fantastic!! The staff are extremely welcoming, professional and courteous. The food was delicious and I love the concept. One of the best eating experiences I've had and I highly recommend it to anyone. We sat next to the kitchen area and it was wonderful to watch the chefs at work.

Me and hubby have been wanting to visit Skosh since we read Jay Raynor's review some years ago and it didn't disappoint. When it says 'small plates' there is more than enough to share between 2 people and unlike some other 'small plate' establishments, you do not leave hungry. Even so, it isn't 'style over substance' either, every plate exploded with taste and was beautifully presented with little surprises hidden here and there (I won't spoil the fun). And it's not only the food that delivers, a welcome change is that the majority of the wines can be bought by the glass so you can either stick with what you like or change it up with what you are eating (can recommend the 'Amstramgram Pomone' which went with all the savoury dishes we had and the Gruner Veltliner, which paired beautifully with the Baron Begod cheese and truffled toast!) We sampled around half of the menu so we have the joy of looking forward to a return visit to taste the other half (or maybe even a completely new menu?). Book your table now:)

We have been twice now and been so happy both times. It is like going on a culinaty adventure with delicious little surprises lurking all over the menu. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and their service is top notch. You will not regret! Updated review: returned for the first time post pandemic and delighted to find nothing has changed, at least in terms of atmosphere, quality and imagination. The menu has of course moved along, but my goodness it is all still so good. Food that delights and intrigues and surprises. Book a table, you will not regret!

We were looking forward to going to Skosh for its interesting approach to food. What they have is essentially tapas-style - small plates. The food was presented well. It all looked great. But we felt that it was lacking in... "flavour" (for want of a better description). It was all nice - but not a single dish had that "wow" factor. It's a pity. We were really excited to come here but left a little disappointed. Skosh has a lot of good reviews on here. Did we just come on a bad night?

10 stars!!! It was an amazing dinner in all aspects, the food was spectacular, the waiters so welcoming and the atmosphere fun and relaxed. I would repeat the plates 100 times, HIGHLY recomend it!!

Beautiful food. Gorgeous wine. The attention to detail was just fantastic. We absolutely loved it at Skosh. I recommend for everyone to try the hen’s egg. It was a delightful surprise and not what I expected. If you find yourself in York, please please please get booked in here. You won’t regret it!

Where to begin. Skosh is an experience worth the hype and money. Don’t skip the magical hen’s eggs and be sure to order the Jerusalem artichoke and salt-baked celeriac dishes. The crab papads didn’t have much flavor. Our server was knowledgeable and attentive throughout our meal. To note, I do not recommend reserving a “kitchen” or high top table for your meal because the tables are quite small and the tall seats are not comfortable for a full dining experience. It was however fun to see dishes before ordering them. Highly recommend Skosh; be sure to reserve!

All aspects of our experience were terrific. Char-siu pork, the quail and the chocolate torte were particular highlights for me but it was all excellent (got about 7/8 dishes). Good wine list. Small but interesting selection and good quality. Service was top notch throughout. Been looking forward to a visit for ages and it didn't disappoint. Will absolutely be back.

This is an outstanding, terrific solid gold taste sensation. Must be the nicest place to eat in York, and I've tried quite a few! Unassuming yet sophisticated cafe vibes bely a hardworking kitchen and waiting staff to bring you magnificent menu combinations throughout your meal. I'm sure the menu changes regularly but the char siu belly pork with gooseberry and baby gem was mouthwatering, plaice in tandoori butter with pureed lime pickle also exceptional and even the humble Jersey royals were elevated by the taste combos of marjoram and spring alliums on offer. The green beans with pickled watermelon, Thai basil and satay cream was gorgeous too. Sourdough bread fresh and warm, served with butter and gunpowder salt. Yum. Decent wine selection here too and cocktails looked pretty good - I'd have had one if it wasn't lunchtime, but I was considering it... Look at the attached menu, see the photos and go and eat here. I'll be back.

Had an exceptionally good lunch here - I would contemplate travelling from London again just for this. There was a relaxed atmosphere with friendly staff, but most importantly the food was outstanding. The best restaurant meal I've had in ages.

I’ve eaten here twice so far, and am already looking forward to my next visit! This is absolutely delicious food in a really laid back and friendly atmosphere, for REALLY affordable prices. We came in in shorts and tee shirts for our lunch and the people working were so lovely, explained how it worked, the local dishes, and were really good at suggesting things to try for mine and my partners dietary needs. Also the cocktails were really tasty!

My son bought a voucher for me, so went to try it. Not my thing. Can't work out what it is really. Got told to try a couple of things. One of which was the hen's egg. Wish I hadn't, other things on the menu were better.

Last visited in October 2016, Happy to say the food lived up to the memories. Highly recommend visiting Skosh on a visit to York. Neil and the team come up with a large menu of seasonal small plates, every one balanced, well thought out and perfectly executed and presented. A mixture of British, Indian, Thai, Chinese, Japanese influences with local produce. The only problem is how many and which to choose! The great food backed up by excellent and knowledgeable front of house team. we will try not to leave it so long before we return next time

Interesting and varied menu. Very unusual and enjoyable. Wonderful staff who are able to anticipate diners needs and display a sense of humour. Always go for the hens egg it's wonderful. Everything is beautifully presented but unpretentious.

Exquisite food, perfect presentation and incredible service. Every time we come here, it’s like rediscovering Skosh for the first time. The changing menu brings an infusion of new food discoveries with every visit. The staff are incredibly friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable about food, and this really adds to the overall experience.

A one of a kind experience. One of the best meals I’ve ever had. Skosh is truly such a gem of a restaurant. Small plates style but I was STUFFED after 2 apps and a main. Couldn’t skip out on dessert either haha. The food is so inventive and like one of the servers described “nothing is as it seems” which is pretty spot on. Delightful flavor combinations. Very reasonably priced given all the attention to detail and quality of ingredients. An absolute joy to dine here. cant recommend enough.

Amazing experience and incredible food We sat at the bar which is always our favourite seat in any restaurant with an open kitchen, and we weren’t disappointed with “the show” The service was amazing and the food was hands down one of the most faultless and delicious meals we’ve had in a long time Highly recommend!

Love this place. The food and service is outstanding.

It is marvellous. It is no exaggeration to say that, on taking the first bite of some of these dishes, my eyes must have popped out my head like Bugs Bunny. All but one of the dishes we chose were vegetarian, and they were all fantastic. I had perhaps the most outrageously delicious dessert I have ever had, a chocolate and cherry torte with Tonka bean ice cream. A triumph.

We had such a great experience! We'd been recommended Skosh over 3 years ago but life got in the way so we've only just had the chance to visit. It was well worth the wait though! The food was stunning - I enjoyed every single dish. Their cocktails were fantastic too. Our servers were fantastic, so attentive and friendly. Honestly, I can't recommend Skosh enough.

There’s no point going to York if you don’t go to Skosh. On the most recent visit this week I had some mackerel, char-siu pork, asparagus and a brioche bun with feta. This list hardly does justice to the quality and taste of the cooking and the imagination and skill that go into the dishes. It’s a terrific place to visit with great service and a decent choice of wine, beer and cider and all very fairly priced in these straitened times.

Incredible menu of small plates + fantastic service!

AMAZING FOOD! We absolutely loved every dish and wanted to lick the plates clean. The staff are so friendly, knowledgeable and attentive and really add to the experience. Every dish was 10/10, highly recommend the crab papads, garlic brioche, duck, hake, potatoes, asparagus, pork fritters - everything. Would come back tomorrow if we could. We ate here and at Roots and would choose Skosh every time. Can’t wait to return!

I love their food and service attitude. Everything was good. Just that maybe can increase the portion a little bit more because still felt hungry afterwards.

Lots of competion for the best restaurant in York, Roots, Rattle Owl, but Skosh is up there with the best. Really great food with the most friendly and knowledgeable staff. Especially good at catering for coeliacs. Highly recommended.

The restaurant was very cozy and staff was friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious with an impeccable blend of tastes. I recommend you to try the oysters and the duck. Would totally come back if given the chance.

Fantastic birthday lunch for my daughter. Staff were fantastic but the food was even better, can't rate this highly enough. We tried most things on the menu, everything was just perfect. We are used to good restaurants and this has really impressed us, what a fantastic meal. I would say very good value for money in the context of fine dining. Thank you so much!

Absolutely fantastic. Every single dish was crafted with care, using top-quality, seasonal ingredients, and cooked to perfection. The staff were kind and accommodating, and the chefs in the open kitchen didn't only seem not annoyed when I asked them a question and then complimented a dish, but the head chef/owner seemed genuinely thankful for the feedback. Fantastic restaurant. Would not be surprised if it was awarded a star.

Essential you’re eating (arguably) Michelin star food, but not paying that price tag. I’ve eaten in many 1 star restaurants that are not as good as this place. Every aspect of this place is perfect. It's not too big meaning that there is a good atmosphere and it also means that the service is great. Attentive but not over bearing. We'd booked for 9:15 which is one of their later sittings and even though we ended up being the last to leave the staff didn't seem in any hurry to get us out the door. We ordered around 6 plates between 2 of us, which is what out server had suggested. Every dish was phonomenal. We thought we were full but we even managed to order thier rhubarb dessert to share. My wife has an intolerance to orange and they were able to say exactly what did / didn't have orange in. The knowledge of the dishes the staff had was excellent. If you're in York try and get a reservation here, you won't regret it.

Very relaxed atmosphere. The food was really nice, I liked that they are small plates so you can order a few to share as there was so much we wanted to try. Stand outs were the oysters, hen egg, cod and monk fish. Nice service also, our waiter was really friendly.

The highlight of the meal was the dessert, super cute presentation and great flavours. Bread was nice as well.

Best restaurant in york for creative food that's interesting and tasty. Menu regularly up dates so no problem with variety. Still great food that is the most exciting in York. Here again today and continues to deliver great food, wine and service!

The food, as always, was exquisite. The service attentive without crowding and the atmosphere was buzzing without being too noisy. Totally love it!

Absolutely amazing food, wonderful atmosphere and fairy friendly staff. I can't wait to go again. If there were to be a negative, although the staff are absolutely lovely and really friendly, they did seem a little run off their feet, that were points where we just needed something like a glass of water or another drink and it took quite a bit of time to get to the attention of the staff. But the food is absolutely beyond this world. It's just such a chilled vibe. I love it!
