Silver Star in Scottish Borders

The worst Chinese we have had would not even give it to our dogs. Just rubbish all went in the bin. I would not even give to my dogs.We ended up going to mandarin garden Peebles to order again.

Worst Chinese food I’ve ever had, chow main tasted like just plain noodles, won tons look raw, special fried rice was hideous.

Had the meal for two as a take away and not impressed. The chilli chicken wings were not freshly cooked and of the three main courses two were very bland with both sauces being a bit gloopy. The third contained stringy and chewy meat that was meant to be crispy chilli beef. Interesting to note there appears to be little online presence and its difficult to find a menu enywhere so maybe that tells a story.

Wanting a takeaway we opted for the set meal for two. The menu clearly stated there were three meat courses but when we sat down to eat we found there were only two provided and they were barely distinguishable: one was long strings of nondescript meat in dried out battery; the other was cubes of nondescript meat in the same dried batter. The sauces were distinctly average and everything was lukewarm. I see from the other reviews that some people had excellent food. We did not. This was the worst Chinese meal I have ever eaten and based on my experience I could never recommend this establishment. There are other places nearby. I try to be a fair reviewer (look at my other reviews) but I really found nothing to commend about this food.

Beautiful Chinese food. The best we have had in the Borders. Good sized portions and all cooked fresh. Shredded chicken in honey was amazing. Will be ordering another takeaway very soon.

Authentic Chinese dining, fresh and plentiful. Family meal that all enjoyed. Served quickly and food tasted very good.

Ate here recently after avoiding the place for a number of years following several really disappointing meals. Have to say though we were very impressed! Service was lovely and friendly and the food was absolutely delicious. Hubby likes his food spicy and they adapted his dish to his taste. It was also nice to see the place busy too as there’s nothing worse than an empty restaurant. Good atmosphere and we will definitely be back. Definitely would recommend.

Nice evening out with good service from friendly staff. Food was tasty and arrived and placed on warmers so you can eat at leisure without food going cold.

Ordered 3 different meals with a special fried rice, fried rice and Chinese spring rolls. Speedy delivery and a terrific meal that we all enjoyed! 😁

Went for a take away at the weekend after about 6 months of staying away following a number of disappointing meals. Very please, the food was excellent! Things appear to back to the days of old, both the owners were in, which in my experience makes the world of a difference!

My husband and I went for a meal on Saturday night. We received polite , helpful and prompt service from the staff. We ordered spare ribs to start and duck and chicken dishes for mains. Tasty and generous portions. Would have given five stars if surroundings were nicer. It’s very clean but needs an update. We were the only people there on a Saturday night although we did arrive 8 30pm so people may have been in earlier.

Silver Star use to be at great quality food every time, my family have been going for nearly 25 years. Over the past few years its been “hut or miss” sometimes fantastic, other times not so much. The past few times has sadly all been bad, lunch portion was half the and quality was worse than something out the microwave. The manager/owner wasn’t there and I have been told the quality and service standards slips when she is not there. Today we got a take away and it has put the nail in the coffin, undercooked, watery sauce. Just chucked in a box/bag and sent out the door and as quick as possible, worryingly they didn’t appear that busy. I don’t usually do bad reviews however I feel my previous good reviews are no longer warranted, for the price paid and the fast competition in the town Silver Star is one to avoid. Sorry.

This restaurant frustrates me so much. The food especially when eating in the restaurant is really good and portions favourable. What infuriates me is the staff running up and down the stairs thumping into every step while you try to enjoy your meal. If there are any more than 2 tables they start running around as if extremely stressed and it does not make for a pleasant experience. They need to work on calm and quiet service to let their paying customers relax and enjoy the meal. The restaurant would also benefit from some nice modern decor to improve the restaurant.

My wife and I have eaten here for many years and both the service and food are first class, and great value for money.

Having read the last few reviews we weren’t sure about coming here lunch. So glad we did the waitress was really nice and friendly and the food was lovely we had the 3 course lunchtime Special fantastic value for money haven’t had banana fritters in years.We will definitely be back soon

This is the most disgusting Chinese takeaway I've ever eaten. The chicken had a texture that was nothing like that of a chicken, lemon chicken just tasted of sweet and sour. It just felt like I was being poisoned. Most of it went straight in the bin. Avoid if you have any sort of idea what good food should taste like. The delivery did arrive in good time though to be fair

After using this place for YEARS. The last time i was in it i had already bought and paid for my meal.at the counter. When it came i asked for a cheap plastic fork .so i could eat it while waiting on my bus ....But i was told i had to pay an extra 10p.in front of other customers. Its not the money lol but the way i was told. I have never ever been back or going back .The only reason i used this place was if i only had my bank card .as they have a card machine what if i didn't have cash what a joke ..And the best by far takeaway is at langlee .they never charge you for something like that . But you need cash .as they do not take cards i would phone in an orrder with my card to the silver star ......But i would rather just walk to the bank now .......

Been a few times, food was cold when it came out, noodles came out 10-15 minutes before the rest of our meal, we were the only people sitting in so not really an excuse for this. Chips are lovely, food is usually good but can be fairly expensive. Do not recommend the sweet chilli chicken as the sauce is almost gravy like

Had a takeaway last Sunday. Hot and sour soup for starters which was so spicy but delicious. It's the nicest I've ever tasted. Picked salt and pepper ribs for main also delicious. Best Chinese in Gala by a mile.

I decided to eat at this restaurant based on trip advisor reviews, extremely disappointed with the service and the time it took to serve the food. It took 25 minutes between serving main course to our party, in fact I think they forgot there were four main dishes to serve.

So lets start with the previous negative reviews. No traffic through restaurant area. Take away collection at front. Decor, plain but with a new and nice carpet. Outside is quite plain, first section is take away. Up three steps to the restaurant area and a nice welcome. Menu offered is the set one. Ask for the main menu it has lots of choice and the prices are reasonable. If you can't see what you want ask if they can do it. The service was prompt and not intrusive. The food was of a good standard and hot. The chicken and sweetcorn soup was really good. We enjoyed our lunch and were offered top ups of coffee which is virtually unknown. Close to the transport interchange for those coming and going and with parking close at hand

Was there for a close friends 70th Birthday Party, the Staff, led by the fantastic May, were exceptional, their cheery demeanour when ensuring that all the patrons were happy with the food (which they were) was polite and a refreshing change to some other, less welcoming establishments. The food was served efficiently and was nothing short of superb. We eat out regularly, after this visit the Silver Star will be high on the agenda.....superb

Restaurant decor a bit dated, could be doing with a little tlc. But food and service was outstanding. Large portions, nice and hot. Chicken satay and chicken curry were both lovely. Thanks to staff for great service.

Me pareció que el menú era muy aburrido, un recordatorio de un chino de 70 años llevar menú. Pedimos 3 entrantes. Las tostadas de gambas estaba hecha, las costillas barbacoa era insípida y la camarera vino y nos dijo que nos habían dado el mal que los rollos de primavera ya había comenzado a comer, así que nos llevarán durante) por los platos principales también pidió 3 platos. El pollo y jengibre plato tenía la misma salsa insípida como el plato de cerdo, sólo sabía de lo que era diferente porque en los platos individuales (por ejemplo, el jengibre) los platos llegaron y tuvimos no cubiertos, así que tuvimos que pedir que sirve cucharas y cuchillos y tenedores (y también de otras tablas comprimidas). Nos dieron bebidas para empezar pero cuando ya no estaban, nadie nos preguntó si queríamos más. Frágil tejido barato servilletas. Todo el personal parecía ser menor de 25 que, aunque no hay nada malo con ello, carecían de experiencia en atención al cliente. Decoración muy viejas y desgastadas.

I got a take away, my food wasn't as warm as it should have been and the prawn crackers were very hard, i asked for my meal to be mild however it was very spicy and I couldnt eat it.

No ha sido por un tiempo, pero si me apetece comida china, este es el lugar donde me visita. Plato grande de pan de gambas siempre presentado antes de la comida. Cualquier plato que he tenido ha sido sabroso y caliente para mis visitas a lo largo de los años y almuerzo de 2 platos por £7. 50 o 3 campos por £8 es una buena relación calidad-precio.

Had a Takeaway from here for the first time at the weekend after getting fed up with other Gala takeaways. It was Fantastic, Friendly, Fresh & Tasty! We will definitley be back again :-)

Fancied a chinese. Read the review so thought we would try here. We arrived stood at reception for a while until a female told us to sit anywhere. She dropped the menu on the table and disappeared. Another girl was occupied with telephone orders. No one asked if we wanted a drink no one came to take our order. Walked out after being ignored totally for 10 mins. Will not recommend will not return

Worth travelling here. Excellent food and service. Food always tasty and hot. Advisable to reserve on a Saturday night.

Monthly visit for Hot and Sour soup, deep fried crispy Squid, Duck breast with a plum sauce, accompanied by delicious fine noodles. Huhgry at the very thought. !

We always went to Lee garden for our Chinese take away but decided to try the silver star to eat in for our daughters birthday, the food was really good, they offer a 10% discount for NHS workers too. We went back a few weeks later for a take away and that was good too. This will be our take away of choice from now on

10 of us recently dined here. The food is great with good sized portions. The staff were all friendly and happy to help. All 10 of us commented on how we enjoyed the food and night overall.

I would defenetly recommend this restaurant. The menu is very extensive and the food we ordered was really good. The staff very attentive and friendly. The restaurant very clean and tidy. Look forward to our next visit.

Great night out, took the train to Gala, 22 of us with a wee drink on the train down, Silver Stat right by the station. Great set menu that we arranged in advance, good food, very good value for money, fun+++, lovely service. Gather your friends and plan a trip while there is still beautiful summer evenings to enjoy!

Visited here with my partner whilst on business and was very happy with the food and service. The food was really good quality and the staff were friendly. Would return if in the area again :)

I was one of a large party that recently ordered from Silver Star. Meal was ordered at 7.15pm and we were told that if we waited for delivery it would be an hour, but if someone could collect it that it would be 30 mins..... at 8.30pm we were still waiting....When those who collected finally turned up with it most of the chips and rice were cold. Luckily we were at an establishment that had a microwave. I have never had such disgusting sweet and sour sauce... 1 ring of onion 1 piece of pepper and 1 piece of pineapple and the sauce was like dish water.... it was awful... you would have thought that getting an order for £146 they would have made a better effort....hardly any syrup on banana fritters and chips tasted days old....

Always great food, very friendly and helpful staff. Whether dining in or takeaway.... great experience

We had a lovely lunch at this Restaurant with friends, there were 10 of us and we were seated at a large round table which was great as we could all talk to each other without having to get out of our seats. The food was delicious, piping hot and the staff were very friendly and helpful, bringing us fresh jugs of iced water regularly. There were bowls of prawn crackers to nibble on while we waited for our food, which, I must say, did not take too long to come. Most of us had two courses then coffee whilst the rest had three courses. When we got the Bill, we were pleasantly surprised at how reasonably priced it was. A very pleasant experience which will be repeated soon. Definitely worth a visit.

Been a few times before, and have always had great service, and feel very welcome. They made a 10 yr old girl (and her old Dad) feel very welcome, and very special. Food was excellent as ever. Always attended too, yet never pressured. The lady serving was the only one in at the time, and although she was quite busy serving and answerring phones, she took it in her stride. I hate it when a restaurant doesn't slap the bill on the table as soon as you have finished as if to say.. right time you left! But the silver star always gives you plenty of time to relax after a meal, and at the end of it all, I was pleasantly surprised by the total bill. Definitely recommend it.

Quite simply, the best Chinese restaurant in Gala, but I just can't understand why this place is so quiet!The food is excellent, an extensive and varied menu, comfortable restaurant area, helpful, friendly and attentive staff, reasonably priced, this place has it all. Seriously though - why is this place so quiet? We were in for my other half's birthday meal and were the only ones in the place at only around 8.30pm. Other reviewers too have commented on the lack of clientele. It seems very, very strange when this place is just so good! Will definitely be back - and soon!

This Restaurant is super. The food is good, the staff is friendly and helpful. I regularly visit here and it never disappoints.

This is by far the current best restaurant in Gala. A must if you're into Chinese. I had the beef in a black pepper sauce with my partner one night before the cinema and I loved it. Would definitely go back and try some other dishes. Service was great too.

Can't fault the food it was lovely. Decor is slightly tired but the food more than makes up for it. I would recommend this Chinese and it's definitely the best in Galashiels

Love this place!! The food is fantastic and plenty to choose from. Never had bad service yet and we go here a lot - whether it is to sit in or take away. Prices are very reasonable. Restaurant is set up fantastic and there is a wide selection of drinks available. This place is a must visit!!

This is a great restaurant! We came here with friends who recommended Silver Star for dinner. The staff are so friendly and efficient. The food was fantastic; loads of choice, really tasty and fresh! Can't wait to come back.

My friends and me went to silver star last Saturday, the restaurant was full, food was excellent and very good value! Friendly staff and very cosy, quick service, I wily highly recommend it, I will go again!
