Shillingfords fish and chip shop in Neath Port Talbot

Brilliant fish + chip shop, we go out of our way to visit. Fish bites are excellent, staff always polite, and never wait long when pre-ordering.

Gone Downhill Unfortunately Last Few Visits Have Been Poor. Have not seen Andrew there for a long time either. Not sure what is going on but major improvement necessary as food on last few visits has been poor.

Paid £14.20 for soggy chips, worse battered fish, half charcoaled seafood basket. They forgot to include the lemon too. The homemade tartare sauce was lovely. Great shame such well known place is spoilt by poor quality chefs/ untrained unsupervised staffs. Andrew must be livid! Not recommended until quality improvements are made. Pics attached.

Rarely have a chippy supper, first and last time for this place,fish was fine hence the rating but the sausage in batter was overcooked and hard to cut. The chips were too dry and cold ... Not fresh cooked at all..

I placed an order for over £20 at 6:29, I brought it home, the chips & sausage and batter are burnt.

30 MINUTE WAIT FOR LARGE CHIPS ONLY!!! Only 1 customer in the shop I ordered 1 large chips witch took just over 30 minutes! The staff were all on their phones talking to eachother very slow service! Also the large chips were more like a small put into a small tray, only came here as the other chip shop I go to was closed and the one further down was to busy, let down again by this awful place

If you go here. You Got To Try The Meal Nicknamed "The Bull" So its a large chips with gravy down one side and curry down the other side. Then a large portion of mushy peas on top of it. Then a portion of grated cheese on top of that. Finishing off with a cheese rissole on top of it all. £8. Absolutely banging and meal for the day!

Working in neath was recommended by a friend to try this fish and chip shop , it didn’t let me down, went for the chicken curry rice and chips and it was stunning , big portions and freshly cooked chips , will be going there again very soon , amazing

Amazing service! Food was all fresh and beautiful and service was quick and proficient. Staff are so friendly and polite. Jaz made my jacket potato with cheese and beans and it was perfection. Lovely and buttery, plenty of cheese and beans. Thoroughly enjoyed and cannot recommend highly enough.

Used to be an excellent place but going down hill ,depends on which staff are working as to quality of food unfortunately owner's don't like criticism

The Welsh know how to do fish and chips! Huge portion and great service...you can't beat that. Besides the fish and chips, a great and varied menu with meals prepared fresh. Yummy to the max!

Over the years this chip shop used to be very nice but it’s rapidly gone down hill, the last few orders for takeaway I have had have not been the best 5/10 at the very most but my most recent order was absolutely terrible and it cost £18 for only myself! The large cod as described on the menu was of a child’s portion and the sausage was pale and under cooked. This is not the first time now and will be taking my custom to a different fish and chips establishment

Ordered two pies and a rissol and chips ,chips were like cardboard pies were cold the rissol was hard,a female member of staff took my Order and then went on to make coffee? The saff had no idea what was going on I think headless chicken's is the phrase I'm looking for 10 minutes later I was served. Dreadful it's supposed to be award winning chip shop but don't have a clue what it was for

Staying in the area so took the advice from Trip Advisor as to where the best place was to get fish and chips from and totally agree that it is the best in Neath - and probably a much wider area too! Delicious skinless cod and freshly cooked thick chips (also had some great halloumi fries and hubby had a pie) Very neatly wrapped and presented, and my tartar sauce came in it's own branded plastic pot. Can't fault it and would definitely return if I was visiting again.

There are two excellent fish and chip shops in Neath and this is one. Standards are high, it’s very clean, COVID is taken seriously unlike some other places and the staff are friendly. Service can be slow sometimes BUT everything is cooked fresh for you and as it is popular you may well not be first in line. Well worth trying

in November I took my parents to Neath for the day, where they enjoyed shopping and exploring the wonderful indoor market. The market had lots of traditional stalls selling fruit and veg, clothes, gifts, fish and meat. We also visited Victoria Gardens and the peaceful...

Once again a brilliant service with lovely fish & chips. 41 beautifully cooked, hot, delicious meals delivered promptly to our Church supper. Not a single complaint from anyone. Thanks again you helped to make it a very successful evening 😀

Every time I have been to Shillingfords I have to wait for the chips to cook and the chips are anemic looking pie's are soggy because they have been cooked in the microwave

First visit here today when looking for somewhere to eat before an evening meeting and it didn’t disappoint. Everything fresh and cooked to perfection, friendly staff, and also one of the few MSC certified sustainable chippies in Wales! I’ll be back when I next have a meeting nearby :-)

This is my second visit in two years to Shillingfords and won’t be my last . The fish and chips are fantastic as are the staff. Coming from Yorkshire I must say you have to call if you are in Neath .

This is our go to chippy. Turned up just as they were closing this evening and they were more than happy to cook us fresh fish, chips, mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce.

The fish is cooked to order and served in a box with a generous amount of chips which are crisp and fluffy on the inside.

I ordered 2 saveloys, 2 chips, a cheese rissole and a curry sauce. One saveloy wasn't cooked properly, both were barely warm upon serving. Chip portions left a lot to be desired, especially since a loads of the spuds were off. Rissole couldn't have been any smaller. Will not return.

The LARGE fish was rather small, but tasted good. The chips were pale and only just cooked, a few more minutes would have helped. a better quality potato would improve the eating experience. Service was good.

This is a chippy at the top of its game. Chips fresh and crisp, fish fresh and crisp. Salt and malt vinegar on sizzling hot fish and chips. Enough said.

On our first ever visit to Neath, this place came highly recommended by family who live locally. We ordered the fish and chip meal deal plus a tea and coffee and a request for a glass of tap water. We expected a wait for the fish to be cooked but when the meal arrived it was not accompanied by the 'included' bread and butter or any of the drinks. These still hadn't arrived by the time we finished so we gave up on the bread and butter and asked for the tea and coffee in take out cups as we had a train to catch. After another wait we finally asked for a refund on the drinks which resulted in them finally arriving a couple of minutes later. We rushed up to the station but the doors to our train closed in our faces as we walked out onto the platform. Grrrrr!!! As for the meal itself, the fish was good but the chips were soft and flabby. Overall, very disappointing.

Needed something big and filling so I called here for beans , chips , jumbo battered sausage and a cheese rissole needless to say I was well impressed food is amazing and the staff are allways really friendly

First of all chips were being cooked fresh and was only a few minutes wait, however member of staff was prepared to serve me the scraps of what has left which didn't look very appetising which made me question quality standards, I just said I would wait for the fresh chips to be cooked. I always say large chips, however the very portion size itself is always very small so after several visits a bit disappointed overall.

Our favourite place to eat as a family of 5. Nothing is too much bother for this fantastic business. The tastiest food and excellent value for money. Highly recommend as it never disappoints. Keep up the good work! Best chip shop around!

meal deal good value. fresh fish cooked to order, friendly staff, can park outside but you are on a busy main road no carpark. good selection of all types of food from faggots and peas to pies pasties fish burgers menu quite varied to suit all tastes

Visited here a few times and have been impressed. Fresh chips and fast efficient service. Good value for money as well. Its difficult to decide who is the best between them and the chip shop up the road as both are very good, it just comes down to who is the most consistent.

Our favourite fish and chip shop is Papa Barns in Maidstone Kent, which year-on-year reaches the finals of the National fish and chips regional awards for the southeast of England. So as we were visiting Swansea for a few days we looked to see if there was any other fish and chip shops in the area that had passed through to the regional finals and we found Shillingfords!

Ive been using this chippy for years . Good portions served and plenty of choice . Fromm cooked breakfast to baked potatoes and fillings , curry , fish , sausage , chip butty, pies etc good clean area for serving and also seating . Parking is a pain but there is always the side streets .

I have visited here with friends & my two young children quite a few times & we’ve always had a great meal. The breakfasts...wow! We’ve had quite a few previously, great value for money. My children love the chicken nuggets meals & we will definitely be visiting here again

Along with the usual menu offered at chip shops there is a large amount of extra choice. Service is always good. Seating area inside and outside, only drawback is that it's on the main road. Sometimes the fish in batter is a bit soggy

All freshly cooked to order without doubt Shillingfords is No1 for my money. The fish is wonderful and fresh and s generous portion. Chips are really good but 1 large portion is enough for 2/3 of us.

Good food. Good price. Excellent service. They understood children's needs and catered accordingly. Clean modern cafe. Large toilet which really helps when taking kids.

The menu is extensive. Eat in available. Panco prawns, shrimps and fish in tasty, light bar. All freshly cooked. The chips portion is large. Very impressed. We'll come again.

Called in with my mam for a sit down fish and chips meal. Very fresh white tasty cod with a nice portion of chips, mushy peas and tartare sauce. Its the best I have had since the last time I visited. Staff were also very helpful and personable providing friendly and effective customer service.

This is fish and chips how it used to be! Big tasty whole cod and freshly cooked chips. The fish comes in a box to keep it crisp and they even provide a slice of lemon which is novel. Staff are polite and friendly. The best fish and chips since I can remember.

My last review on this chippie was a full of praise. Unfortunately a further visit here was disappointing. The fish was ok but the chips were undercooked and not pleasant to eat. It would have been a hassle to have taken them back so we just binned them.

Stunning piece of cod, great size portion of chips, curry sauce is to die for, and my youngest who is a chicken nugget specialist, states best in wales, great value, great taste

We visited Shillignfords for an evening meal. WOW. The fish was amazing, as white as snow with a beautiful light crispy batter. The chips were fresh and grease free. The restaurant is spotlessly clean also. Great staff and great food. Only wish I could give a higher rating than 5.

I have been here quite a few times and yesterday I was lucky enough to win the Friday competition! The food has always been outstanding but it was my first time having the fish and I thought it was stunning! I have always had lovely food there and will carry on going here for my chips! The staff were very helpful and worked very hard!

Would highly recommend this chip shop.. not only is the food outstanding the service is amazing. Caters for everyone and a lot of variety and all reasonable priced will definitely be visiting again very soon!!! Xx

Decided to have a chippy supper as we haven't had one in a few months and we were disappointed! Chips were pale and stodgy- barely cooked! Once you put a fork in the chips they squished and didnt hold their shape! Heard so many good things about this place but feel let down!

I have never been to this chip shop and my daughter got us fish chips and mushy peas from you in neath abbey. I am well impressed to say the least. The fish was packed in a box so it stayed nice and crispy and tasted fabulous and the chips were wonderful and not greasy at all and the mushy peas were so nice. Thank you shillingfords for a fabulous meal. I will return. Xx

Parking can be a nightmare.Good quality chips, excellent fish and the option to go for fish bites (off cuts) at 50p a throw.Clean establishments but the staff and service are frustratingly slow. Like most places these days, fish is cooked to order, which can take some time.There is the option to eat in as well but you tend to be well observed by the queue.Good range of additional itemsNot all their shops are easily accessed by wheelchairs. The one on Briton Ferry road is accessible

Really nice rissoles and the chips fresh and not at all greasy. Very enjoyable will definitely recommend and return.

after a few trips to the tip called in for a quick lunch fancied a jacket potato and was reccomended by big Al the owner to try a jacket with chilli and cheese, I have to say this was the bomb best jacket i have ever tasted and i will most definitely be calling in after my tip run again today or tomorrow lol. goto say the shop is spotlessly clean and staff are very pleasant too. My husband fetched a take away from here last week. The chips were crispy and hot and the spicy curry sauce was delicious. This is our favourite chip shop in neath and i would recommend it..

Usually very good. staff very pleasant and attentive always very busy so usually ring ahead with order as freshly cooked. Last visit disappointing as even though preordered order was wrong and chips very dry inedible.

a couple of weeks ago we had arranged to have a social night at our club. we decided on a traditional fish and chip supper. we had used shillingfords before independantly but thought we would enquire if they could provide a large quantity of meals to be delivered to the premises for us to enjoy.well we contacted shillingfords and they said of course we can do it. they then took the order for 35 fish and chips and a few chicken and chips.on the evening of the event they turned up at the specified time and they were all piping hot all individually boxed. with freshly made tartare sauce which was stunning.when we opened the boxes the cod were massive, so much fish and crammed with chips. it was fantastic and all delivered on time and hot and very reasonably pricedA massive thank you Alan and all the staff at shillingfords for being professional and making the meal and the night a success.If you are having a party and fancy doing the same as us, please give them a call. im sure you wont be disappointed.

Food is really good but be prepared to wait ages to be served and then for your server to actually gather your order together. Don't get me wrong.. staff are very pleasant but so so slow

Shillingfords on Victoria Gardens Neath is the place to go for delicious Fish and Chips They even now cater for people like myself with Coeliac disease.Their staff have attended training courses to learn about people who have Gluten Intolerance. This is the only chip shop in Neath that does this. They sell Gluten Free Fish and Chips.You can also have GF sausage or GF sausage in batter. GF Fishbites GF Curry sauce. Even GF vinegar. I have tried them all and they are delicious. You can have them to takeaway or to eat at their sit down restaurant.All cooked in a separate range so that there is no cross contamination.

Have had several visits to shillingfords like many fish shops but the service if quick and the food fresh

I had the pleasure of having fish and chips in the neath abbey shop today I must say I really enjoyed them especially with they're new tarter sauce which is so tasty. The service was fast and the fish freshly cooked none of that dry stuff which I get in some of the shops. I definitely will be going back for more soon, looking forward to trying they're breakfasts now the melyn shop is opening at 7am.

Visited the Victoria gardens shop yesterday. Had a beautiful freshly cooked breakfast couldn't fault anything. Best breakfast around. Will definitely return to the melyn shop for another. Well done

Had a quick meal here (Neath Town Centre venue)with friends recently. Food was delicious and good value for money. Staff cheerful and efficient. The thing that let it down was that there is very little room between the benches and tables. Even the thinnest among us were a bi cramped. For this reason I will probably not return.

I went in there late afternoon it was nice and quiet so I only had to wait minutes for the meal while they cooked it I had Fish and Chips with a Rissole on the side I think they use corned beef in the mixture it was all excellent they have a few tables there and the cooks are very friendly I could,nt eat it all so they put the leftovers in a foam take-out container, I will go there again on my next visit

Whilst helping my friend carrying out a few jobs at his house, we called into shillingfords chip shop for meat and gravy pie and chips and a chicken pie and chips, both meals were cooked very well and tasty, we enjoyed our meals, staff were very helpful, will certainly call again.

The staff are friendly and the food is great. It a nice atmosphere to eat in during a college break. The have seat and a children menu to allow a family day out with young ones. If your a college student, it is affordable and a great place to meet up with friends during lunch.
