Stopped off for lunch after a bracing walk on the Suffolk coast. Friendly welcome, fair selection of good, honest, pub grub, and clean surroundings. Tasty food, table service, very reasonable prices, and very dog friendly - our greyhound did not want to leave after all the attention and sampling the big box of dog treats on the bar.

My Wife and I had a lovely Wednesday evening meal at this quintessential English pub with excellent food. My Wife ordered Gluten Free Fish and Chips which were fresh piping hot and very tasty, I ordered the Classic Burger with Onion rings. When the Onion rings arrived there was also a portion of Gluten Free Onion Rings, these little touches make all the difference, both meals were excellent, the waiting staff were polite and extremely friendly with nothing too much trouble. If you are in the area this is a must.

Stayed in the area and was recommended the Shepherd & Dog for an evening meal. I had already checked out the place earlier in the day with a swift Cider ( this one counts as sustenance as I was walking) and decided to return for my evening meal. The staff were very pleasant and friendly explaining that there was a large party booked in later that evening, so I went straight for the menu to avoid the kitchen crush. The menu offered a good choice and included vegetarian options as well. I chose a classic prawn cocktail to start followed by scampi and chips for my main. All washed down with a pint or two of cider. The food was delicious and the cider hit the spot. A great village pub which appears to cater well for locals and visitors in equal measures , not an easy task. The weather was hot so I chose a table outside next to a gentleman with two beautiful VERY well behaved dogs. ( apart from the Labrador which is obviously a master thief given his superb heist of a bag of salt and vinegar crisps from the bar ) Maybe the gent was a Shepherd ! Very entertaining. I would definitely recommend the Shepherd and Dog Inn at Hollesley.

Six months since we last visited. Sunday lunch was today very good, but the restaurant still seems soulless. Dusty outdated plastic foliage on the wall. It looks like it’s had its day. The restaurant is badly in need of a makeover. Family came in after us and we’re told that several items on menu were off. NOT GOOD ENOUGH. Waitress needed a clean apron.

We came in on a HOT Sunday with friends. Started off by ordering drinks. We ordered a Coke and Malibu & coke and the coke was from a half empty bottle that wasn’t stored in the fridge so had to have a warm drink on a 30’C day. The fish and chips was absolutely drenching in oil and the onion rings were covered in it too leaving a pool of oil in the dish. We were the only customers for food in so no excuse for it being busy or to have warm drinks. Wouldn’t recommend.

We wanted some lunch after doing a long walk and found the Dog & Shepherd on Google, so off we drove there, when we got there it looked like it needed a good cleaning form the outside, but we were very pleasantly surprised. We ordered some snacks and they were absolutely delicious, I am a bog onion ring fan, and get tired of ordering them only to be given ones that are clearly from a packet, not at Dog & Shepherd, they were home made and amazingly tasty, in fact all the food was. The staff were very polite and gave excellent service, very friendly too. It was a lovely lunch and we will go back, recommend highly.

We stayed at a local caravan site and ate 2 dinners and 1 lunch at the pub, each time accompanied by our dogs. The weather was good enough to sit outside on every visit. We don’t eat meat (only fish) but there was still enough variety on the menu for us to choose something different. The staff in the pub were delightful, particularly the young lady, Jodie, who served us at every meal, she was very helpful and charming. The food was lovely and the local beer and choice of wine was great. We hope to return.

We often over the years have had many meals here as we stay at the nearby site. We went for Sunday lunch on our arrival of a ten day stay. My char grilled chicken was lovely, but husband had the roast beef. He couldn’t cut the beef as it was so tough, and the Yorkshire was uneatable the beef was a cheap cut! dining area has no atmosphere, and I think I mentioned on my last visit they need to get rid of the dusty plants and spruce the room up. It wouldn’t take much. There was as I presume the manager who just kept walking about doing absolutely nothing. It was a little off putting as the server was kept very very busy as was the barman. He didn’t speak to any one, a nice welcome means a lot! It is a shame as we eat out the entire stay and would have gone back but not until there is an improvement.

We were staying at the nearby Run Cottage Touring Park and went in for dinner with our 2 large Labradors. It was a busy Friday night but we got a table in the corner which was great to keep the woofers from being too over friendly with the other customers. The staff were fabulously attentive - table service for drinks and food. The food was good quality and generous portions at a reasonable price. Fresh fish and chips with home-made tartare sauce followed by a fantastically gooey chocolate muffin with ice cream middle. So good we came back for a coffee and snack lunch on Saturday. Sausage & onion sandwich and deep-fried chilli cheese with salsa. Good food, excellent friendly service and treats for the dogs - we will definitely return.

Amazing food. My wife is Gluten intolerant so we always ask about if a dish can be made gluten-free. You can usually tell by the menu if food is prepared from scratch or comes in a frozen bag. This pub/ restaurant cooks from scratch. There was a long wait to order but the food was well worth the wait. A victim of their own success. The staff were apologetic and compensated us by only charging for one round of drinks. This was way beyond our expectations. Great staff. Highly recommended. We will visit again.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We recently stayed in the village of Hollesley and were advised that the Shepherd and Dog pub welcomed dogs. When we arrived at the pub I went, with my black lab, to see if it was ok for us to take dogs into the pub. A lady met us outside and advised that we could either eat in the "marquee" or the restaurant. I asked if it was ok to take dogs into the restaurant but she said no dogs were allowed in the restaurant. I don't even know why she told us about the restaurant as she could clearly see my dog! I asked if we could sit outside at some tables just in front of the pub and were told no these are for drinks only. I was surprised as there was no one sitting at any of the tables outside only people in the marquee. It was a particularly warm day and I wanted to be able to sit outside with our dogs so that they could get some air. If we had gone into the marquee it would have been way too hot for our dogs. I would not describe this pub as dog friendly and the marquee was, I would guess, the former smoking shelter. It had some very rustic old tables in there and not at all nice to sit and enjoy lunch. Would I visit or recommend people to visit then my answer is clearly no if you have a dog.

Now that we have both a dog and a vegan in the house, finding a decent place to eat has become a bit if a mission! So, finding the Shepherd & Dog on our way back from Rendelsham Forest was a stroke of luck. They allow dogs outside and in their marquee, with plenty of dog water bowls to go round.Their menu has been pared down to a few excellent favourites. My homemade burger was bursting with herby flavour. There wasn't actually a dedicated vegan option on the menu but when we asked about vegan options, the waitress disappeared and came back declaring she'd found a secret vegan burger hiding in the kitchen - result. The real pieces de resistance were the chips. Perfectly brown and crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside! I love it when staff are invested in their products and both our waitresses were also in raptures over the chips when we said how good they were. Wholeheartedly recommend this place!

On holiday in a holiday let within walking distance, we booked in for an evening meal. The owners of the holiday let had told us the food was OK. It was much better than that. All three of us enjoyed our meals very much - my wild mushroom tagliatelle was excellent. What impressed me greatly though was the intelligence of our waitress. My wife and son don’t like raw onion, so we requested that their salads be onion free. First question - “Is this a preference or an allergy?” Good training here. She went on to ask of the onion in the coleslaw was OK - it was, but thanks for asking. The restaurant was almost empty - an out of the way pub in October - but it deserved to be full.

Stayed in nearby caravan park, 10 minute walk to this pub. Very quiet road so although pub garden overlooks road it was very pleasant. Locals were really welcoming, staff friendly and we had excellent service. Good choice of food and dogs allowed in bar area.

It was our first visit to this pub. Welcome was warm, service excellent. The highlight of the evening was the delicious fish and chips. Light and crisp batter, perfect fish. Lovely chef popped into the restaurant and had a chat with customers. Friday night special is great value for money..

Visited with friends and had two courses, starters and mains. The starters were so large we struggled with the mains. All good wholesome food at a good price. Would recommend. The restaurant area is separate from the main bar which was good as a the bar area was showing a major football match.

We walked to the Shepherd and Dog last Monday evening from a local camp site for a meal to find food wasn't served Mondays and Tuesdays. However, the landlord quickly offered to provide a selection of sandwiches and a bowl of chips to save us having to walk back to our campsite and make other arrangements. The sandwiches and chips were very good. The landlord also offered to provide a meal for us on the Tuesday evening, which was an excellent local ham , eggs and chips. To fire up the kitchen for two people shows excellent customer service all provided in a warm friendly atmosphere.

We went to the Shepherd and Dog Saturday evening. We had a couple of drinks in the bar then ate in the restaurant. There were 4 of us and we all had different meals but every meal was outstanding. My husband had the steak and ale pie which he thought was the best pie he had ever had! I had the lasagne, one of our friends had steak and the other had lamb curry followed by sticky toffee pudding. All the food is home made and the steak was cooked just right, our only complaint was we couldn’t eat it all! The staff are all so friendly and the pub has a lovely atmosphere we will definitely return very soon.

We had a party recently at the Shepherd and Dog with a lovely buffet for 70 people...nearly all the food was homemade (sausage rolls, lasagna, vol au vents, etc) and a lot of our guests remarked it was the best buffet they’d ever had! The staff were all so warm and friendly throughout the whole evening. And the owners Chris and Carol couldn’t have done more to ensure we all had a great time! On other occasions our family have eaten in the restaurant and always enjoyed the food, and likewise the staff are always so welcoming even if we just pop in for a drink. This is a lovely country pub, a true gem in Hollesley and highly recommended!

I went here yesterday after a walk with my dog at shingle street. I ordered steak and chips and it was excellent and cooked just how I asked for it to be cooked. The portions are very generous as well. The barmaid Helen was really helpful and polite I can highly recommend this pub for not just food but hospitality thank you.

Always very welcoming this was our third visit several months apart and we were greeted as if we were regulars. Our little puppy was also made a rush off. We have never had a bad meal here. Our choice today was brisket in red wine, roast veg and mash. The meat just melted in your mouth. Our dessert was apple ans caramel crumble with custard, all I can say is a combination to die for. Roll on our next visit.

The scallops on black pudding with streaks of lime was as delicious as it looked. Fabulous! Followed by a Haggis Tower including swede and neeps mounting up to good proportions skirted by roast delicate whole parsnips. Wow! To finish Butterscotsch Bread and Butter Pudding with a whisky creamy sauce. Divine! Good atmosphere with friendly chatting between the tables and the caring publican. The chef was given a spontaneous round of applause. Fresh food! So obvious.

We stayed at the nearby touring campsite and this lovely dog friendly pub was highly recommended. There was a very warm welcome and friendly staff. The food was delicious and good size portions. There was even a table with games and cards to play which was a nice touch.
