Shap Chippy in Eden

Once again, fish and chips from Shappy Wheels parked at Clifton on a Friday never disappoints. Not only is the food excellent but consistently good.

My husband and I visited Shap Chippy whilst on holiday in Cumbria. I must say it was the best fish and chips we had tasted. The fish was cooked perfectly in a lovely crispy batter and the chips were beautifully crispy too. I am pleased to say that the fish was definitely cod as stated, and not pollack. Some shops sell pollack and pass it off as cod. Not here though. We only had one small criticism, the fish was slightly small considering we paid for the large cod - we could have eaten more.My husband said if we had been staying another night in Cumbria, he would have gone back again, he enjoyed it so much. That is real praise coming from him, since he is extremely fussy about food.Also, the staff were very pleasant,friendly and quick to serve the food.

My husband and I stopped here on a day out. We had fish and chips with curry sauce. Can honestly say, this was the best F&C’s we have ever tasted! Perfectly cooked, nice crisp batter, and chips were crispy on the outside and nice and fluffy on the inside. My husband said that the curry sauce was delicious and ‘banging!’, he’s an expert The service was excellent. The premises were spotless. Their COVID safety measures were thorough which made me feel safe. We will definitely return!

Super clean take-away restaurant with friendly staff and very efficient service. Great menu choice and all our food was delicious .. definitely the best fish, chips, mushy peas and halloumi we’ve ever had!

Best fish & chips I have ever had, nice and crisp, cooked to perfection. Would highly recommend to anyone. Only 10 minutes from the motorway, make an effort and take time to go.

We had beautifully cooked fish, my son enjoyed the squid and the chips were great....the only disappointment was the size of the portion of chips. A large chips is about 1/4 of the size of a large chips anywhere else - it was a single layer under the fish.Also, it would be great to see the food wrapped in paper, rather than polystyrene.

Amazing fish and chips. We were travelling up to Scotland and wanted a stopping point for tea. Shap Chippy was perfect. Just 4 minutes drive from junction 39 it was very convenient. We were able to order online in advance at our choice of time and when we arrived at our allotted time, the food was piping hot and ready to go. I am not surprised this fish and chip shop is rated number 2 in the UK. The cod was beautifully cooked and the chips were crispy, golden and tasted like they had been cooked in fresh oil. 10/10 from all of us, thank you.

Yet again we had delicious fish n chips from Shap chip shop! We always stop there on our way to or from the lakes or Scotland you can't beat it!Last night's fish was fantastic as were the chips and mushy peas!I defo recommend at stop there if you're passing through.

Visited Shap Chippy for the first time today and ordered a regular fish & chips with curry sauce as a side and it was the best I've ever had, cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious, I can't wait to go back for more.

A short trip up from Kendal and well worth it too.Pre-ordered food online, simple to use and plenty of choice. Select your preferred time and turn up a few minutes early.I wasn't waiting long before my order was called.Friendly service and the food was absolutely delicious, hot and fresh too! We will definitely be coming back and recommending to friends and family!

Called in here for my lunch yesterday whilst out on a drive around Cumbria and the lakes, served by a well mannered young gent.Had Fish and chips with mushy peas and a can of vim to wash it down.It was absolutely delicious.Would recommend to anyone driving north on the M6 to pull off in to Shap for their lunch here.

Fish and. Chips amazing Pizza mmmm amazing So yesturday. I. Tried the. Chicken burger Oh my. Served in. A. Brioche bun a big chicken fillet. Woth all. The trimmings. Absolutely loved it 👍 if you haven't been then go you won't. Be disappointed

We saw this has won awards, but we’re slightly disappointed.The fish and chips were good but no better that others that we have tried. They were a little greasy for us and the batter a bit chewy. They were very organised and good to be able to order online.

Great food great price. Fish was fresh, chips were amazing. If ever back in the lake District, will definitely come back

After everyone taking about how great the food was we thought we’d go and give it a try, they close at 7:30. But we were there for 7:15 and felt rushed. We placed our order and waited and went to sit and eat it. The fish was undercooked and there was no ‘crisp’ about it. Chips cheese and gravy lacked cheese and was sogging my chips of the little gravy that was given. Child’s mozzarella dippers were warm but not properly cooked either. On a lovely day like it is today with tourists being around the area I thought the hours were also poor. Overpriced to, for one fish and chips and a small chips cheese and gravy and a children’s meal deal, came to just short of £20. Will not be returning.

Amazing Food, Great Staff! I can see why they have won all their awards!We ordered ahead via the app as had been told by family its advised to order ahead if possible, super easy, and I am not great with online and apps things, so if I can anyone can do it! On arrival cold see they had taken Covid19 seriously with a great queuing and speaker system in place really easy and felt very safe.My Husband and I loved your crispy batter and fluffy chips , also the curry sauce was really good! Kids had some chips but they wanted to try pizza from Shap Pizzas next door, they were VERY impressed!A VERY happy family on a bank holiday day out!Been twice before and never got around to a review (sorry!) Will be back again soon!

Did a detour after reading that this shop had come in the top 50 chip shops. I’m at a loss to know how. The food was piping hot, but the fish and chips were soggy. I will say, I had no problems with ordering inside and being asked to wait outside until the order was ready.

Absolutely by far and away the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. The place looked cool, loved the branding, most chippys look old and rundown, not here though. They menu was decent sized and coming from further south on a visit I was well chuffed with the prices, the views around the area where great and we very much enjoyed our visit. Cheers folks

Been a while since visited shap chippy, family of 4, all had fish and chips, all were very disappointed with the chips, soggy and no crisp to them. When ordered no one asked for salt and vinegar so the customer service is lacking a little bit there. Because told to wait outside had no choice to ask them!

Very tasty fish and chips and easy to order using their app. Collection was no hassle and well organised.

It's over a year since I last visited the Shap chippy and was disappointed that they still haven't sorted out the very real necessity to offer a friendly and welcoming level of customer service. On my last visit it was mayhem and it took ages to get served, the counter staff were irritable and snappy. This time there were just two staff behind the counter and going completely over the top with their directions to "stand in the right queue" and "not block access", the last time anyone was this terse with me was when I was in the armed forces many years back. I think the COVID-19 controls they had in place were commendable, but the implementation was poor - and the Polish lady behind the counter was just grumpy, plain and simple.The food was of an OK standard but portion sizes were average. Given that the Shap Chippy is one of the more expensive in the North of England, they'll have to do better than this if they hope to attract more out-of-town visitors. My advice would be start with staff training in how to be nice to people.

Recently moved to the area and was recommended to visit Shap Chippy straight away. We downloaded the app which was easy to use. Order collected on time, the shop looked great! I’ve never seen a Chippy so well decorated and marketed before.Onto the food, out of this world! I can see why everyone raves about Shap Chippy! I’ll be back for more fish and chips, and to try the apparently new pizza shop they have there too!

Brilliant user friendly app to pre order food. Easy contactless collection. Friendly staff. Best chippy we’ve been to. Top quality food. We can highly recommend. We will be returning very soon. We had the battered halloumi and the battered sausage, yummy.

No where near as good as they used to be pre Covid. Have tried them three times now since lockdown and every time disappointed. The batter is soggy inside and the fish tasteless. Not sure what has happened as they seem to have never been busier

After ordering this evening via their app, thinking it was delivery, a member of staff called to let me know about my mistake, thats the reason they get their one star, otherwise it doesn't deserve that. I have had an issue in the past that they rectified after their owner messaged me and wanted me to remove my review, that won't be happening this time. His general attitude towards paying customers is ridiculous. Telling me I'm the only one to complain in the last7 years, please read the below reviews that have been replied to? Also to be told, after requesting LOADS of salt and vinegar, yet having none on the fish, and next to none on the other 2 meals, but he has reviewed the CCTV and deems that extra was put on. One regular and one large fish, very similar size and weight. We were offered a £10 voucher to return after basically been called a liar. Not good customer service.

My local chippy and feel lucky to have it my doorstep, especially with current restrictions. Always delicious, well prepared food - I sometimes have chicken or sausage as a change from the fab fish - and it never disappoints. Feels very Covid secure - use the app or website to preorder. A real treat every week!

On the whole, the meals from the van are generally ok, better than some chippys and worth a try.Unfortunately, they can’t manage their service very well. They park up right next to their main storage and parking area but stop serving and taking orders 45 mins before their stated closing time...I know that things are hard at the moment and business is tough but then again I know there’s businesses out there that are slowly dying while still trying there best to serve the local community.I will take my business and support one of the other businesses that actually deserve it.

Just had a fish supper from the shappy wheels van. It was delicious. Best I've had for a good few years. Much better than any in Cumbria. Very well priced and great sized portions. A must for anyone who loves chippy teas! We loved it. Be back. E shift

We live some distance from Shap, but have heard the good reputation, so when passing nearly we called in to try the F & C. Of course we had to wait outside- they are very careful Covidwise and that has added to their reputation. I gave my order, waited socially distanced on the shop and was served in very good time.As to the F & C. YES they were excellent and must be some of the best anywhere. We can understand the reason for the good reputation. Thanks chaps, we will certainly call again when in the area.

We have just started to get the Shap Chippy mobile fish-n-chip van in our town of Kirkby Stephen and the cod and chips and especially the mushy peas are excellent. Moist fish with lots of crispy batter. Lovely crunch chips soft on the inside and mushy peas that taste like they did when I was a kid. Brilliant.

Had the takeaway from their mobile chip shop at braithwaite last night. Fish was large and superb batter..chips tasted like they used to!...support these very good proffesionals on tough times. Defo on my callender every saturday...great job..

Heading home from Scotland to Cornwall it is always hard to find somewhere safe to eat..... Not any more! Just happened to do a trip advisor search at Gretna and the Shap chippy popped up. App downloaded, order placed and it was ready when we arrived ( loved the call over the tannoy!!! ) and OMG what a fabulous Cod chips and curry sauce. We know where we will be eating next time we head north.

Came by on my way through to Penrith on my lunch since I’ll be moving to the area soon. Really missed having a decent chippy locally since being spoilt by some in Cornwall where I used to live. Wow! Totally blew even the likes of Rick Steins in Falmouth and Padstow out of the water! Really regret not getting a side of Tartare, Batter was light and crispy and the fish was really well cooked and not too oily, Chips were nice and fluffy and crispy. Well seasoned, not overloaded.Look forward to seeing you again soon!

Used the van four times now at Braithwaite. Each time the food has been very good, the staff helpful and the order ready on time. Special treat at weekend.

Very easy to order on line plus absolutely excellent service. They are parked on a private car park so there's plenty of space for parking plus the food is absolutely excellent. Cannt fault them. Look forward to their return next Saturday

You have fish and chips? then you have Shap chippy totally different and totally excellent. They just have that special something that make them stand out and that special something is just delicious.

Very disappointed that you can't pay by cash some people don't like paying by card when other places accept both the food was OK but won't be going that often

Three times I have used shappy wheels in the last month since they have included Kirkby in their rounds. Sadly twice they have charged me for meals that upon getting home found weren't in the bag...Maybe consider once an oversight but twice an expensive way to buy chips

COVID fanatics. Despite explaining to them I was mask exempt, I was made to stand outside to wait for my order in the driving rain. Won’t be going back.

Excellent portions of fish with a gluten free option (poached). Beautifully cooked chips with a tangy curry sauce as extra. Delicious!

Probably the best fish and chips I have had! Fleshy skinless fish and plenty of it and tops chips to go with it - pity we only visited on our last night when staying last week otherwise would definitely visited more than once!

Visited on multiple occasions and the food is always first class, whether I eat in or takeaway. Good sized menu and the staff are always very attentive and helpful. It’s always a lovely greeting and their amazing work during lockdown to put a smile on the local community’s face was not unnoticed and really does just epitomise the team spirit here. Called in on way through to Penrith had a small portion of chips and a medium cod. The cod was absolutely amazing, it melted in my mouth and was cooked to perfection, the chips weren’t to shabby either, but the cod was the star of the show. It’s well worth pulling of the M6 at sharp it’s 5 minutes to the chippy this place is very very good.

Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions it was not possible to dine in and so we had to opt for take away back at our rented cottage.We had the large cod with chips and mushy peas and every aspect of it was delicious. The fish was about the size of a small whale and the batter so crisp and light. The chips were superb and the mushy peas were the best we have tasted.Such a shame we couldn’t dine in but fortunately our cottage was close by so the meals were still piping hot.We would definitely visit here again....

Driving home after a weekend in the Lakes, we stopped here for really good fish, chips and mushy peas. Lovely food, friendly and helpful staff, reassuring Covid precautions. We phoned ahead to check the chippy was open. I expect this will be a regular stopping off point now that we know about it, and we will probably take advantage of click-and-collect in future. Just half an hour ago we picked up our preordered fish and chips from the van at Morland. They were completely demolished within 20 minutes! Absolutely delicious, easy ordering and how great that I only had to walk for 90 seconds to collect them. Thanks to you guys for really supporting all the small communities around Shap. We ordered our meals on line to collect at the chippy van which is in Tebay on Thursdays. Available on time and delicious.

Following recommendations from friends, we visited Shap Chippy a few days ago. Used their app to book our food - this was very easy to use with choices of sauces, salt and vinegar etc.Arrived at our allocated time slot and waited outside - within a few minutes my name was called and I entered to collect the order.We had fish goujons, cumberland sausage and jumbo sausage with chips, as well as Mozerella sticks. All were excellent. All served very hot which meant the food was still warm when you ate it. Chips and fish were not greasy - served just as we like it. We will definitely return in the future.

WOW I highly recommend Shap Chippy and having been to many chip shops is definitely worth travelling too. The batter on the fish was so crispy and thin and the fish was really tasty and wasn't greasy at all, the curry sauce omg I'd certainly buy a bucket full, We will definitely be visiting again and will recommend to others ❤

1st time visting shap chippy tonight with my family after hearing good reviews from friends and we all agreed it was the best chippy we have every had , felt safe with the whole COVID situation, staff friendly but most importantly the food was cooked fresh and tasted amazing and wasn’t greasy , will definitely be traveling back.

First time ever that it was bad. Found 6 bones in first mouthful of fish. Nothing was crisp. Batter was soggy. Chips were soggy. Quite awful. Never happened before.

Shap chippy is the best fish and chip shop I’ve ever been to the staff and so friendly and eager to help, the food is made freshly and is the best chippy I’ve ever tasted would recommend to anyone will definitely be going again! 😊

Our "local chippy" being a mere 5 miles away. Their service and attitude towards their business and customers is 2nd to none. We have visited before on many occasions but during lockdown they have come In to their own doing home deliveries and offering an app so you can order easily. The food is piping hot when it arrives. They now also operate a van and visit surrounding villages weekly, again the food is spot on, no different than if you went to the shop. 1st class commitment to their customers and the local area. Well done and a huge thank you!!

Love this chippy, but standards have slipped. Over the last few months we have had some amazing meals all delivered piping hot to our door which has been greatly appreciated but tonight’s meal was disappointing. It arrived early, we got the correct order and it was piping hot - hence the 3 stars.But the main 2 items in the meal were a let down, I always order large fish but tonight’s fish was small/regular and the chips were piping hot but not cooked through.

We visited after reading the reviews whilst travelling South. What an utter disappointment! We where pounced upon and asked what we wanted before we had even got over the threshold and viewed the menu. It put me off instantly! I wanted to walk straight back out, I would have done, if I did not have my mum with me. The young man( tall with dark brown hair) that was serving was extremely sarcastic and very mocking towards my Mum . My Mum is 4ft 5, she had been very friendly and made polite conversation about how much she was looking forward to eating here, as she had read the reviews. We had every intention of us both having a full meal here . I was so appalled by his attitude, even though I was hungry, I refused to order anything. My mum clearly sensing something was wrong, just ordered a portion of chips. They where the most paltry amount , mainly scraps, cold, hard, dried out and tasteless.She ate 1, I touched another and snapped it in half! They where cast in the car footwell and went in the nearest bin we could find. The chips had clearly been sat absorbing some of this young man's poison and rotten attitude. Clearly not freshly cooked and ought to have been binned not served to a paying customer. Young man, I hope you sort out that almighty chip on your shoulder. If intimidating OAPs, is how you get your kicks in life you seriously need help. Unless, you like being belittled, bullied and mocked do not enter this place ! The food served to my mum was dried out, stale and rank ! Do not waste your money . Photo attached next to the bin, the only place they where was fit for!

I have never been to Shap Chippy before despite living in Appleby all my life.On Saturday night, we took advantage of Shappy Wheels coming to Colby. I pre-ordered on the app as I had a big order and the app was very easy to use. I even stayed up til midnight to get the order as that is when it opens!The service was spot on, the guys on the van were so friendly and the fish and chips was the best I’ve had in a long time.Thank you very much! Definitely be going back to the van when your next in Colby and will also be making a trip to the shop too.Five stars all round

This chippy isn't everything it claims with their glowing reviews. The delivery driver needs to show some manners when advising customers where to stand, especially when we were wearing face masks. Then when we get to the counter we're met by assistants who must think there working in Harrods and not a chippy. Trout pouts definitely come to mind as much as there a small business, do they think the money we are using to pay for average fish and chips grows on trees. Would l come back.....No

So lucky to have Shap Chippy as my local. They have worked wonders during lockdown - proper social distancing for customers, staff obviously taking care behind perspex and their PPE, and managing to smile (I think!) behind their masks. We have had delivery, take away and meals from Shappy Wheels (in Morland) and it's always of the same high standard, served with a smile and on time. I tend to have fish in crispy and light batter, plus chips and mushy peas; but the scampi is top notch, so's the salt and pepper squid... Last night my partner tried the chicken fillet nuggets - 100% chicken fillet - amazing! I still prefer fish, chips and mushy peas... Keep it up, Shap Chippy!

On a Wednesday evening decided we would have fish and chips for Dinner. We have wanted to try the fish and chips from Shap for quite a while but never get there. We had seen they have started there takeaway van and decided to go to Hackthorpe for our first time and weren't disappointed.The attention of current lock down procedures in place. Contactless payment. All staff wearing correct PPE. Batter was crisp and light,nice tasting fresh fish, great tasting chips, and lovely mushy peas. I would recommend that if you're looking for a great takeaway meal and don't mind traveling a little bit in the car. Then go on there website to see where there going to be. Preorder online or just turn up the service was very efficient and always nice to see people serving with a smile. Well done

It was our first chippy tea since March. We pre-ordered and paid with the simple and easy to use app and our food was ready on time. Going into shops is a bit stressful at the moment, not knowing where to stand, worrying about all kinds of things, but this was the opposite. Well thought out instructions, safety measures in place, welcoming staff, hot and fresh food and in and out in a minute. Thank you Shap chippy for your hard work. Stay safe.

Friendly ,helpful counter staff . The food was nice, but the loss of the three stars is down to the rude delivery driver who decided to shout out an order of where to stand on an empty public pavement , we understand the social distance measures but this was taking it too far and left us both gobsmacked as if we were utterly "pike like ".

Usually make the journey to Shap fromA nearby village. But once the van started and has its regular stops one being in the village next to us, it was rude not to give shappy wheels a try out. Absolutely awesome is all I will say. Food tasted just as good as the main shop if not better and was on our doorstep, sadly didn’t get a collection slot as they were booked up. So we went and ordered at the van. Literally 5 minutes and our order was done and sorted Big thumbs up from me. Thankyou fo a great feed and awesome service

During the lockdown I tried some other local chip shops for collection, with disappointing results. We received a mail shot to advise that the Shappy Wheels fish and chip van would be at Clifton, so my wife collected some food from the van, paying contact,RS to ensure safe distancing.The cod and chips were cooked on the spot, and well packed so were still hot when consumed.Very good food indeed, Perfect fish, skinned and boned, and chips with just the right taste and texture without being greasyWe haven’t dined in the restaurant yet but by all accounts that is also a worthwhile experience.Highly Recommended.

Went to the chippy van for a chippy tea treat and it was so worth the drive, best chippy we have had in ages and was still hot by the time we got home which is a 10 min drive! Really enjoyed well done guys x

We were so excited to see our favourite chippy was on the move! We drove from Langwathby to Morland too pick up our meal for our evening out! We hadn't pre ordered but that wasn't a problem. Just waited less than 10 mins and boy was it worth it. Perfectly cooked fish and chips and yummy mushy peas. Everyone was very jovial and the whole set up was all socially distanced too. Decided to go for the Shap Chippy van for a mid lockdown treat.... Ordering online was really straightforward and you can choose your own pick up slot. Service was fast and very friendly. The cod was perfectly cooked with fantastic batter; great chips; delicious mushy peas; the best curry sauce. Will definitely be going back again!
