Shakesby's in East Lindsey

Due to covid my 60th birthday had to be home based. My husband suprised me with a takeaway. It was totally amazing. Blade of beef just melted in the mouth. I am so grateful shaksbys was doing takeaways. Dont hesitate to have takeaway it's amazing and in these awful times made lockdown so much that bit better. Thank you.

Lovely, lovely ambience and the staff who greeted us front of house, were very adept regarding Covid-19 restaurant prtocol. The food was delicious, well presented and locally sourced. I've had to mark my rating down as when Coffees were served those of us who took sugar had to ask for it. During the meal albeit that ours was not a particularly lengthy stay, arriving early so not particularly busy we had to catch Staff attention & ask for further drinks...basics in this trade.

Called here for dinner while staying in a cottage just up the road. Good relaxing atmosphere and very good service. Quality food, prawns for starter and north sea cod loin for main. Enjoyable dining experience. Would definitely return.

I visited Shakesby’s for the first time despite knowing about the restaurant for a long time and hearing brilliant reviews. On entrance into the restaurant, I was amazed at how beautifully decorated it was. There is even an outside area overlooking a picturesque river flowing through the town. The food was to die for! I had the Goats Cheese on Plum Bread to start and it’s Definately on par as the best started I’ve ever had. For main I had the pork belly which was delicious and I didn’t leave a small bite! Can’t wait to visit again with family and friends and will be spreading the word at how gorgeous Shakesby’s food is! Thank you!

Visited Shakesby’s this evening for the first time and was SO impressed. Inside the restaurant itself, it is cosy and quaint with gorgeous characterful beams and fairy lights which create a lovely ambience. The restaurant backs onto a river and has a terrace, which I can imagine makes eating outside in the summer really special. Tables are spread out according to COVID restrictions and there is hand sanitiser on arrival which makes for a very safe feeling in the restaurant! The menu is impressive and varied, something for everyone. I had the prawns followed by the beef and ale pie which were exceptionally presented and tasted incredible. The service was great too. Thanks so much Shakesby’s, shall definitely be back after such a lovely first experience!

As a treat during a mini-break, my wife and I decided to go with two friends to Shakesby’s and we were delighted we did. The starters were appetising while the mains of lamb, ale pie and belly pork were to die for. The side dish of vegetables was well-cooked and the whole meal was a real pleasure. Although we were full, we still managed a dessert from the blackboard and left with excellent memories. If we return to Horncastle, Shakesby’s will be on the menu!

We were having a two night break in Horncastle and so checked up on TA for the best restaurants in the area. Shakesby's was top of the list and we have to say it was correct. All Covid recommendations were adhered to and tables were spaced out accordingly. It is a lovely building backing onto the river, although at the time it was a little too cold to eat outside! Both our meals and starters were superb and all the staff were pleasant and efficient. In fact, we enjoyed it so much, we returned on our second night to further sample the small, but excellent menu choice. We will certainly return when we're in the area.

Went to Shakesby’s with our granddaughter Rose as a treat for her. The food, service and atmosphere was brilliant. Rose said it was the best meal she’d ever had!

We have visited a few times, the food is always of a very high standard and nicely presented. Home made bread is a nice touch and delicious. Relaxed atmosphere. Good value for money, nothing to not recommend.

Four of us met for dinner at Shakesby's and found the food to be of such high quality, in terms of presentation, taste and texture. We chose the steak pie, the risotto, the braised beef and the pork, and no-one had a single word of complaint. Great quality hot food delivered to the table promptly and professionally. The shared vegetables dish was excellent too.It's only a small moan, but I'd ask the wait staff, toward the end of the evening, to keep an eye out for customers waving for attention, when they are engrossed in chatting to customers they know. Three times I waved, and in the end went to to the till to ask for the bill. But for the rest of the evening, the wait staff were excellent. As a real ale drinker, I particularly liked being given the option of bottled beers either from the fridge or the shelf, a nice touch that no-one else is doing. Shelf every time for me.

Excellent food and drink, service was a bit on the slow side, but not unacceptably slow. The only gripe I would say is that the restaurant was cold. I know we were there early evening, but the room was very cold! Apart from that a good meal.

Celebrated my 60th Birthday here with family and friends, 15 February. We had pre choosen our meals from a set menu. The food arrived piping hot and carefully presented. The staff were very friendly and professional, whilst maintaining a smile, and working under pressure.

Thank you for a fantastic evening! We had the goats cheese starter - my absolute favourite thing in the world! In fact I’ve tried to recreate this at home and I gave up and accepted I just need to drive 45mins to Horncastle to get my fix on that one! We had the stuffed poacher fillet steak, it was amazing! I’ve had the braised beef before and the steak pie ... always amazing! I’d love to try a beef wellington if ever that’s on the menu, it’s our absolute favourite... and someone we know has been and had that before and stated it was incredible! So my only solution is to visit frequently and we might catch it! the staff are very friendly, the service was a little slower than usual last night but I can’t fault it as they had a lot of tables in, and to be honest we wanted to make a night of it and I love the fact we had a table at 6.45 and didn’t leave till 9.30 and at no point we felt rushed. I think we would have been ok to stay till the end. Sometimes when you have an early table in a restaurant, they have booked a second seating and you are given hints (fair enough!) but not here. They have a great wine list and do lovely coffees and teas - just love this place! It’s worth the drive out for us for sure! Oh and pudding is out of this world!

The spotlessly clean wooden tables are wonderfully laid out, and there is even a balcony overlooking the river if you wish.The staff are welcoming and attentive, indeed 'top-notch', and Mark, the owner, will come and greet you and have a chat. The extremely high quality of food and the mouth watering dishes (designed by chef and owner Mark Shakesby) will have you returning again and again to this unique and wonderful hidden gem!If you like exceptional food at very affordable prices and friendly and attentive service, this is one not to be missed!

yet again a wonderful meal! what a lovely atmosphere for a random Thursday night! the food is always excellent and the service was very good. the prawn starter is beyond delicious and the ‘special poacher steak’ they do, melts in your mouth! it really a proper little gem in Horncastle and i would recommend to anyone who is looking for a very high quality meal and a relaxed and enjoyable evening.

All ways busy, so you should book. Service is fab, food is perfect, Only one thing that lets it down is the noisy customers.

Having had a superb meal here last month we decided to give the "beat the clock" a try as it seemed very good value.We were not at all disappointed! My wife had the curried parsnip soup as a starter and aia opted for the pate. Both very good!We then went for the fish of the day, tuna which was a good choice.A bottle of red and two espressos later we went home replete and happy.If you want to eat early I strongly recommend it.

We went last night for our anniversary meal and I had one of the best steak meals ever.Not being a lover of fat on my meat I am wary ordering steak but the young server was so eloquent in his description of the dish that I took a chance. I was not disappointed! It was so tender it took no cutting,I swear that you could have cut it with a fork!

Lovely small menu reasonably priced. Food was really tasty and well presented. Good service and will definitely eat there again.

i was gifted vouchers for a birthday and went in a group of 4 people for a meal on Friday 2nd August, the whole experience was a delight from start to finish with a cosy atmosphere, friendly staff and superb food. Very good value and we will be returning

Ate here with my wife on the evening of Tuesday 3rd September whilst staying in Horncastle. What a great little restaurant. It only has about 30 covers and we counted 25 of them being used on a Tuesday night. It must get really busy at the weekends.

Not a regular reviewer but they earned it. Completely random selection for evening meal whilst away with work...great unique restaurant setting, great service, food was perfect all round and reasonably priced. Cheers guys. PS Melissa is awesome :)

Lovely meal out, perfectly cooked and delicious food, friendly and efficient service. Very good value for such a high quality meal, the goats cheese on Lincolnshire plum bread with caramelized onions starter was to die for, the duck main course was no less perfect.

They have a great menu and some awesome specials, everything I tried tasted great, I had something called a poacher steak and must say it was one of the best I have tried, my wife had a vegetarian dish and she was very happy. The staff are brilliant. The location itself is very nice in a very old building with low ceilings and beams which makes you comfortable immediately. It's not cheap but well worth it. Would we go back? YES.

Staying in the town for a couple of nights, we were recommended to try Shakesby’s and were certainly not disappointed.

Had an excellent meal here once again. We were looked after from the get go. The waitress was very helpful explaining the menu and we didn’t feel rushed at all. I had the black pudding Bon bons to start and what a good choice it was, my Wife had the Goats cheese which was a plate and a half. For mains I had the blade of beef on horseradish mash and my wife the Duck breast with pineapple both very good. I wasn’t going to have a dessert but was pressured when I saw the mint chocolate cheesecake OMG it was to die for..... the Eton mess which my wife had was lovely also. Thank you for a enjoyable and filling evening.

We visited here for a birhday celebration and weren't disappointed. The food was interesting and well-presented with some tasty vegetarian options. We will be back !

We booked Shakesby's on the back of Trip Advisor reviews, being visitors to Horncastle. My wife and I really enjoyed all of the food on offer and the service was excellent. The steak was stunning; really tasty and tender and I really liked the idea of the selection of small desserts which they do as an option. Often a full size dessert portion is more than we want, so the option of a mini-dessert was really welcome. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend and if we were local this would be a regular haunt for us.

We booked an early meal with friends. We were early but were welcomed and shown to our table while our friends arrived. Service was good and drinks were offered. I was disappointed to discover that a pint of lime cordial with soda water cost £3:55, 3 times the price that I pay at my golf club. The 2 course early starter meal was good value, though choices were limited. The service was good considering how busy it was at this time, staff were having to rush around quite a lot. The food was of a good quality and there was plenty of fresh vegetables. Our server was very attentive and clearly had a very good attitude towards customers. Overall the meal was good enough but a few details spoilt it for me, I found the hard dining chairs uncomfortable and the lack of space in the lounge area a little short of the mark. The ambiance was not great due to the volume of people, possibly a victim of their own success? The final nail in the coffin for me was being overcharged for desserts, which was corrected when I pointed it out.

Visiting from Glasgow I was pleasantly surprised by the ambiance, quality and standard of this restaurant, I was surprised how busy it was on a Tuesday evening, loved the food, highly recommend the slow cooked beef, went down perfect with the Malbec 👌

We booked for the beat the clock menu, 2 courses for £12 before 18.30. Not only is this amazing value but some of the nicest food I’ve had out in a long time. Between us we had a mixture of starters/mains, everyone had something good to say about their food. We travelled from Lincoln and will definitely be going back.

We have visited on a few occasions and have always had a brilliant time. The restaurant is lovely inside, a really nice vibe and food is always really good and well presented.

Starters, main courses and desserts were all to a very high standard, and service was prompt and courteous. Although there is a regular menu, which is online, there were also several appealing specials of the day. Vegetarians are very well provided for, much better than is typical, with several interesting main courses to choose from. Although more expensive than a typical restaurant of this area, for the quality of food, for the veggie options, and for the overall experience, it was well worth it. On this Saturday evening the restaurant was full, booking essential. We look forward to visiting again.

Booked this restaurant by accident thinking it was Magpies in Horncastle! But we are so glad we did, everything from the food to the service was excellent, we will certainly be returning for our next celebration

Often had family meals here and treated really well. Kids made to feel really welcome and never had a problem with service or food.

Yes, we're regulars, but the food and service are always so good that we keep coming back. As well as the A La Carte menu there is a 'Beat the Clock' list up until 6.30pm. Staff always friendly and helpful. Reasonably intimate atmosphere.

My wife and I, would like to consider ourselves as regulars. That withstanding we don't expect to be treated any differently to anybody else. This evenings visit was just like our first. Attentive, warm and efficient service, with the usual smiles and giggles. Now to the crux of the matter. Revised menu, our old favourite back tonight. Crab fritters , get them ordered. For me ( not a militant vegetarian ) Mark's beetloaf dish. Just about the tastiest dish I've had there. Bloody marvellous. Thank you Mark, Matt, Sophie and Merlissa.

This restaurant has a good selection of items on the menu including veggie options. The staff are efficient without being intrusive and all the food was well-presented and well-cooked. All in all a very pleasant evening.

I managed to get a table for Valentine's Day, I ordered the black pudding starter and my partner ordered the halloumi. For mains I ordered the fillet steak served medium rare, rolled in black pepper corns and stuffed with poacher cheese. I don't normally like poacher as I find it has an earthy flavour but once melted it complimented the meal perfectly. My partner had the sirloin steak, cooked medium. The chips were brilliantly cooked and the presentation was great. The dessert, the valentine's days sharing assiette was lovely, the sticky toffee pudding included was incredible. Overall the meal was superb, both of us left feeling full. We will be back soon hopefully!

We found this place on google and what a find! The food was lovely! We had pheasant and partridge which was cooked to perfection. And homemade cheesecake topped it all off! A warm and cosy atmosphere. We will definitely be back.

We had a party of six including 2 vegetarians and one with a nut allergy. From the moment we booked we felt very welcome.

We ate here on a busy Saturday night. The ambiance in this restaurant is lovely and the service very good. My husband has been a little stuck for what to eat when we have eaten here because he is quite a plain eater however on both occasions we have eaten here he has chosen from the specials menu and been extremely happy with his meal. Tonight he chose the king prawn in a cream sauce as a starter and I had the mackerel fillet. The mackerel fillet is such a pretty plate of food with excellent flavours including pickled vegetables and a mango gel. Tonight, we both had the fillet with a Lincolnshire Poacher for our main course and this is an outstanding dish. The vegetables that accompanied the steak were also delicious. Neither of us had room for a dessert.

The staff go the extra mile to be of help and advise cheerfully what is good to eat. Service was faultless and willing. Not overbearing but subliminal. Always aware when needed to fulfill and order. I would highly recommend a visit and be pleased you did so.

My wife sister in law & father in law recently visited Shakesby's. The food was excellent although when my wife wanted to swap mashed potato for chips we were charged an extra £2.50 as they couldn't change a set menu . The service appeared to be run by children & our wine was dumped on the table without being poured or a taster being offered which I would expect in a restaurant. Such a shame about the service !

Not sure what has happened to the Chef but the food on our last visit was much better than this one.

Great place to eat, food and service is exceptional. Fourth time we've been and 10/10 every time. An added bonus with it being a 5 minute walk from where we live.

Visited shakesby’s a number of times and each and every time I have been it has been exceptional. To begin with the atmosphere is incredibly welcoming and the restaurant has a very warm ambience to it.

Have to say the service is first class and the food is awesome. Treated as a welcome friend from start to finish. Allowed to take time and enjoy the ambiance. All guests had a wonderful time and swore to go back. Had friends from Australia and they said this place took some beating.

Visited with friends on Friday 21st for dinner. Fairly busy, certainly not heaving. We had a drink by the bar, whilst studying the menu, a very pleasant atmosphere with friendly young staff.

Shakesby 's has a lovely ambience and a great atmosphere. The fairy lights are a nice touch and it felt very welcoming and friendly. The staff were attentive and efficient. The food was superb! Good sized portions and cooked to perfection. Shall definitely return as soon as possible.

Lovely nice restaurant kind efficient staff but having looked online at the menu it didn’t match the menu in the restaurant, also very small portions kind of London grade style where one mouthful and it’s gone. Vegetables covered in butter just to make them look nice. This restaurant should be in a city not a countryside pub area

Visited here for the first time and loved it. Atmosphere good, service good, food excellent. The black pudding stack was superb as was everything else. Would go there often if we lived anywhere near it. Very reasonably priced also.

We visited on a quiet Tuesday evening. A very warm welcome from staff. Excellent service from start to finish nothing was too much trouble. A very interesting menu! Sea Bass very good as was the Belly of Pork. Good wine selection. We really enjoyed the evening. Good value for money. Would recommend and would revisit.

Service was very attentive from entering the restaurant right through to settling the bill. Good range of food on the menu served beautifully and well presented on the plate. Excellent choices of Gin and wines. The ambience is really pretty with fairy lights and glassware glowing and twinkling in the light.

Been here on a few occasions as a couple with family, for anniversaries or birthdays. Each and every time has been wonderful. The food is so delicious as the staff are very knowledgable and helpful and the atmosphere, well we travel over 1 hr 20 mins round trip so that should tell you. Amazing and worth a trip

Having tried to book various restaurants in the area without any luck, shakesby's kindly accommodated us as a walk in. All in all the food was of a good standard, however having ordered the sea bass 'fillets ", I was served a single fillet the size of a gold fish, given the price I was expecting more. Also I don't think that I should have to ask for serviettes to be placed on the table at which point I was thrust a bundle to dispense myself. Just saying.

This is an eatery that never fails to please. There is always a varied menu, attentive staff and efficient service - we can't fault it, well done!

What a treat of a restaurant! Been several times since moving nearby. Food is wonderful and service is always excellent. Now is when I wish I could remember names!

Good quality food choice available and nicely prepared. Very tasty and worth paying a little extra for with a nice selection of veg. Food home cooked and desserts delicious. Well worth a visit.

e We were able to sit on a covered balcony overlooking a little river lovely view and ducks swimming up and down. Very helpful waiter Scott was able to answer all questions quickly laid our table for us and brought everything in good time. The food was exquisite to look at and to eat. Would definitely go back

Superb food! Good, professional service. Ask for a table towards the windows at the back of the restaurant. Our visit was slightly marred by being seated close to the kitchen door and bar area.

I chose the garlic mushrooms which were delicious; I very rarely eat the bread but needed it to mop up the yummy sauce. My rare steak was full of flavour, and I was tempted to share a Bailey's Creme Brûlée with my husband. Back soon...

I had been wanting to visit this eatery for a while now and to my surprise I was taken there as a birthday treat... And what a treat! Service was swift but not hurried, food was lovely, genuinely happy smiling faces from the staff and Mark the chef/owner even popped out of the kitchen to wish me happy birthday! Nice touch. Will certainly be visiting again. Highly recommended.

Fell upon this restaurant by chance whilst visiting family and friends. Very atmospheric, friendly and polite staff. Couldn't fault the service and the food presentation and quality was second to none. Would not hesitate to return or recommend!

We have been to this restaurant 3 times now and each time it has been an excellent experience. The staff are all very friendly and can't do enough for you. I am disabled and although there is a small step to get in (manageable with a little help) there is plenty of room once inside. The staff have table risers so as a wheelchair user i can get under the table to eat. Just a small thing but it is surprising how many restaurants don't offer this simple convenience. Onto the main point and the food is good solid cuisine very well cooked and above the norm giving a feeling of value for money and a bit special. Just a mention about the staff who are all very pleasant and helpful. Well worth a visit

Cannot fault this restaurant at all. Visiting family so first time we had been but would definitely go back. Lovely setting and service was great. We chose from early offer menu which was £10.95 for main and starter. Good choices on offer. All food was very tasty and well presented with mains accompanied by fresh veg. Dessert was also delicious. Will certainly recommend and hope to get able to go back.

I think the problem is we have been here too many times, feeling staid.

We visited on a busy Saturday night for an 8pm booking, (we'd asked for 7:30 but we're advised to make it 8 due to other parties being in). The girls working are lovely couldn't fault them...the boys, we asked for a wine list and a sheepish boy looking petrified Brough it over muttering something and then went. Starters brought out by again two boys who seemed to scared to speak above a whipser and no offer of drinks despite several glasses being empty. We all were enjoying out starters and were still eating when one of the boys began to clear the plate of two of the guests! One of girls pulled him aside and must have explained to wait until everyone has finished and she did apologise to us explaining it was his first shift, but the lad carried on. The last guest still had food in her hands when he took the plate away.

Another lovely evening out at our favourite restaurant. Wonderful atmosphere and kind, attentive staff. Also very accomodating in respect of tailoring dishes on the menu to suit individual tastes and requirements. Our friend from Bournemouth, was particularly impressed. ( thanks Merlissa). We recently had another relaxing meal to complement our delicious Christmas Day lunch and other regular eating experiences at Shakesby's. Another meal of imaginative sauces and seasoning that brought out the flavour of the cod loin and the mackerel. There was a lovely contrasting choice of two soups and I went for the butternut squash, where again, one flavour enhanced another. Shakesby's fortunately keeps my favourite dishes on the menu as well as making regular creative changes - such as chicken in a bacon and banana sauce - yes, it works! For pudding my partner's sticky toffee was rich and gloopy, mine the lemon roulade was rich and refreshing. The service is always excellent here and it is a reassuringly clean place which only adds to an unpretentious and flavour-focussed evening.

Had the most amazing birthday meal the food was delicious, the staff were very welcoming and attentive, there were 8 of us and we all had different dishes but each one was superb, Compliments to the chef..

Our most recent visit to Shakesbys was not disappointing. Great service on arrival and food served hot and tasty. Our quarterly visits will continue for years to come. Great place for a family reunion with a great family feel to the place.

Really sorry to say that I was very ill after eating at Shakesbys. I’ve been here before, the menu is very often the same, the only dish that was different to my last visit months ago was the chicken. Unfortunately after around 4 hours, I ended up being sick and as I was the only one to eat the chicken, I was the only one who was sick.

Booked a table of 10 for a birthday celebration. As soon as we arrived the staff were very welcoming and attentive, the restaurant is very warm and pleasant just what you need on a winter evening. On browsing the menu it was difficult to choose as everything sounded delicious and we weren't disappointed. Food was brought out all at the same time with no one having to wait. Staff made sure we had all we needed without being over attentive. The food was outstanding and cooked to perfection. Thank you for making my mum's birthday so special and we will be returning.

Unfortunately had only an hour or so to spare here but it was such a great choice. Prompt and attentive service and delicious food.

Booked well in advance on recommendation from a friend, arrived just after they opened and met with a warm smile from the staff, and the chef. Originally booked for four, but two had to drop out at short notice, not a problem. Given a seat by the roaring fire, whilst the waitress took our drink and meal order. Seated at our table, with the food arriving shortly after, deep fried Brie, and goats cheese for starters, chicken and risotto for mains. The food was extremely tasty, the restaurant had a warm ambience, despite being busy, was not too noisy. We will definitely be visiting again, thank you.

Four of us met for an 8pm dinner on Saturday night at Shakesby’s, our first visit. I chose the halibut and was disappointed in the dish, the flesh of the fish being rubbery in texture and at times difficult to cut through. The other mains, bubble & squeak risotto, braised beef and steak & ale pie were all excellent, beautifully cooked. Desserts of chocolate brownie, cheesecake and a cheese plate were also delicious.

Arranged a 60th birthday party for 24 guests and from the very beginning Merlissa and her staff were faultless in their attention and nothing was too much trouble. We arrived at the restaurant and was surprised that we had been given a separate room for our party. The food was excellent, arrived on time and was very well presented. Would strongly recommend this restaurant.

We were surprised at the size of this place, looked average sized from the front but once inside it’s very long and well set out , we received a warm welcome from the waitresses who were busy all night and very polite, Everything on the menu sounded delicious, once we had made our choices the food arrived soon after and have to say it was second to none! Great staff and fantastic food, wont be long before we book again .

We had a beautiful meal with our visiting guests from the south coast, they said it was the best meal they had eaten out for a long time. The food was excellant a very varied choice of menu. If there was any criticism it was a very unwelcoming start, possibly too busy and not enough staff. Also the room temperature was too cool to make it a comfortable visit, I kept my coat on, even that I sat with a radiator on my back.

We called in on the offchance on a Friday evening and had a very nice meal served by very nice people, I would certainly recommend this restaurant

Went to Horncastle with the hubby for a weekend away and booked this hotel after reading the reviews. We were not disappointed. The decor is lovely and the lighting is just right. The service was brilliant and all the staff were so friendly. I had partridge to start and it was lovely. Hubby had pate and that was nice. Hot bread was served. For my main I had cheese stuffed fillet steak cooked medium rare. It was lovely. Hubby had steak pie which was huge, and the waitress took the pie out if the bowl for him. Nice touch. For pudding we both had lemon roulade with lovely ice cream. The prices were reasonable and portions were very generous. Would definitely go back if we were in this area again.

Lovely tasty food. lovely staff and good early dining offer, Good local produce , lovely cosy dining room. Nice area to have drinks.

First time at this restaurant and we were very pleasantly surprised.The food exceeded our expectations and the service by the young waiting staff was excellent.

We went for the early meal which was recommended by a friend and we were not disappointed it was good quality and value.

A great reception upon arrival. Cosy sofa waiting area to enjoy our drinks whilst waiting for family to arrive. Perusing the menu and also given 'today's specials' by the knowledgable waitress. Starters were amazing and just enough to whet the appetite for our main dishes. A great traditional medley of vegetables accompanied our main dishes, all of which were delicious. What a great way to enjoy a family get-together. The owner Mark Shakesby also visited the tables, which was great to see the man behind the menu. 5* rating. Well deserved of the awards this restaurant has achieved. Most definitely will be returning soon.

It's no wonder this restaurant is number 1 on TA, as the surroundings are lovely, the people are friendly and the food is delicious. We visited for our third time last night (Saturday) and enjoyed the evening as a group of 6 friends. Our only negative comment was the fact that the new members of staff maybe hadn't received enough training, as we had a problem with placing our drinks order. Two ladies wanted to order gins, the girl didn't know what gins were available but instead of offering to find out, my friend went to the bar herself and was given a list of those available and the prices. She then selected one, but when it came (delivered by a different girl), it wasn't the one she'd asked for but something completely different and not even on the gin list! The waitress put it down on the table and my friend said she'd have it then. The waitress didn't seem prepared to take it back and get the order right - we didn't make a fuss. One of the guys wanted beer or lager; again she had no idea what they had. Our friend went to the bar to find out as she didn't offer to do that. I don't think he was impressed, even knowing that she was new to the job. Not a great start really.The food was fabulous, well presented, delicious, good portion sizes, served on hot plates. We enjoyed our meals and think they were good value for money. We'll keep coming back but maybe waiting on staff need to be taught about what to do if a customer asks them something they don't know the answer to.

Amazing night with family. The food was fabulous and the staff very pleasant and helpful. Well worth the journey will definitely be going back.

Comfy sofas surround a welcoming open fire in cold weather - a good start to a good evening! The standard of food and service has never slipped over many years. The interior is beamed, wooden tables & chairs, twinkling lights, and a terrace down to the river for summer.Chicken liver pate is obviously home made and very good; the two of us then went off the "early bird" menu to have belly pork and duck. Imaginative accompaniements make the dishes ie pears poached in red wine and pear sauce for my duck - super!

Haven't been to Shakesby's for some time so it was nice to visit it again with a group of friends. A lovely rustic interior, with a small comfy seating area near the door and tables set far enough apart to ensure you felt private. The menu is quite small but enough choice for all. Quite nice not to have pages of dishes so it takes a week to decide on your meal! They have a couple of extra "specials" as well which were described at the table. Several of our group had starters and they all looked delicious. My main was duck breast with poached pear - what a lovely combination it was. Indeed everyone was delighted with their food. The fillet steak stuffed with Lincolnshire Poacher cheese looked amazing. No sides to choose as the meals came with large dishes full of fresh veg & potatoes for the table to share. Generous portions too. My friend & I shared a cheeseboard which was more than ample for two. A trio of cheeses, plenty of crackers & grapes. Wine was quite reasonably prices at £17.50 for a bottle of very pleasant Sauvignon Blanc. Service was extremely good. The restaurant was very busy and the 3 front of house ladies did a great job, flitting everywhere - constantly on the go. It was a lovely meal in very pleasant surroundings. Highly recommended.
