Good food, polite friendly staff, traditional setting, bring your own bottle. We both had a starter and a main, unfortunately my onion bhaji starter was cold on the inside, I was offered a replacement but decided not to . The bill with one small bottle of water and the £1.50 corkage charge each the bill came to a reasonable £ 37

Great prompt friendly service despite restaurant being busy. Food was very tasty, I had a keema dish which was lovely, and had plenty of heat! Waiter gave us a free side dish and threw in some free poppadoms for our leftovers to take home. As mentioned in other reviews it is a Bring Your Own drinks place if you want to drink alcohol, but there’s a Spar just round the corner, where we went. Corkage charge was quite low at around £1.75 each I believe. Will definitely return!

Disappointed didn’t taste of anything really bland curry both mine and husbands were really poor very watery and no flavour, the lemon rice was nice!

The best curry we have had, in town for two nights, went both nights, it is exceptional!! The place is nice and clean, linen fresh and white, staff very friendly and attentive, food out the top drawer! My wife likes the odd curry but she loved it, eno to go twice, to my amazement and delight, and very reasonably priced. I live 80 miles away but I’ll be back… soon!

On a long drive up the A1 fancying a curry and found this place as a 5 minute detour. Service was amazing and attentive with great recommendations of the lamb jaflongee and tandoori murgh masala which were both delicious. Big portions and great value for money!

Enjoyed a lovely meal here on our recent stay in Boroughbridge. We had asked a few locals in a nearby pub for their recommendation before we visited and all were full of praise for the Shahri Raj and I must say their recommendation was warranted. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the restaurant had a lovely decor and atmosphere. The gentleman who took our order was very helpful regarding our choices and was very knowledgable regarding the menu and recommended a cooling sauce for my partner’s spicy dish. The food was promptly served and proved absolutely delicious. My dish, a lamb bhuna, was one of the best I had ever had and my partner agreed that her chicken tandoori was equally as good. Service was prompt in clearing our table between courses as we had popadoms and dips and a chicken chatt and a lamb chop starter and the staff allowed us a minute before our main meal. A wine bottle holder was provided as locals had recommended we take a bottle of wine from a nearby supermarket as the restaurant only serves soft drinks and hot towels and after dinner mints were presented after our meal. Thank you Shahri Raj for a lovely dining experience.

Great service and great atmosphere, staff are smiley and very helpful, bring your own with a slight corkage charge, very cheap considering bottle of wine & corkage total cost £7 compared to restaurants selling wines for £20, food was piping hot and very fresh, family run business and you could feel the care and attention received, cute little place, food prices should be more considering how expensive everything is, but I’m not complaining 😂

Very expensive. Every item was charged separately. Medium bottle of water was £5.95!!!! The menu on display outside the restaurant is for takeaway and does not tell you the restaurant menu is different.

The very best Indian Restaurant I have ever been to, quality of food, professional and polite staff, cleanliness, ambiance all outstanding. Anyone who may in the past has downgraded this establishment must be living in a dreamworld. Highly recommended you will not be disappointed.

Visited with my wife at about 6.30 pm on Good Friday. We hadn't booked but restaurant was quiet so we were welcomed in and given a choice of tables to sit at. It is a BYOB place with no liquor licence. We were given glasses and the waiter kindly opened and poured our beers for us. Our orders for starters and mains were taken and quite soon afterwards the food arrived. We both thoroughly enjoyed all the food we had and the impeccably dressed staff and service were very good. Our dining experience probably warrants 5 stars but I have only given 4 as I do object to the imposition of a £1.75 per person "corkage" fee for providing a glass and pouring a bottle of beer out which we would normally do ourselves.

We were a party of four ,last Friday. 1st. April, and had a wonderful time at the Shahi Raj. Bring your own alcoholic drinks ( not water or soft drinks, as they sell this ) Service was absolutely excellent, all the waiting staff seemed happy to be there. Food was really good. Appallingly bad food with customer service to match. On ordering I was informed that the card machine was broke so it would be cash only. When I explained it needed to be a card payment they then miraculously said the machine was working (I smell tax fraud). Ordered meal totalling over £60 in value. On arrival I found the staff member to be be rude and somewhat aggressive. He took exception to my request for a receipt (more tax fraud?). On arrival home I was very disappointed to find the meal of very poor standard, cheap ingredients and the order mostly made wrong. Nan - Burnt, tastless and hardly any keema or cheese in it Lamb Chops - Burnt to a crisp and inedible Special Biriani - Specifically said King Prawn only - No shrimps. Came full of shrimp and little else Chips - Had been cooked for about 5 seconds, soggy, cheap tasteless, no seasoning Ordered Biriani sauce phal hot, just came plain with a watery Phal sauce thrown in the box Very little meats in the other dishes, clearly the restaurant is dying a death and, with food like this, I'm not surprised. I packed all the food back up and retuned it to the shop for a full refund. Again met with arrogance and aggressive behaviour from the staff who refused to refund the money despite the whole order being returned. Flat refused a refund claiming he couldn't refund on the credit card machine. Refused to refund in full despite all food being returned. Fortunately I paid on a credit card so will ask the bank to return the payment instead. Stay clear of here!!! I should've stuck to the far superior Taste of India where a warm welcome is always guaranteed from Abdul and his team. I stupidly thought that a Shahi Raj would be a welcome change.... How wrong I was!

We have been visiting the Shahi Raj for years and have always really enjoyed it but we were very upset on Valentines night. We arrived at 7pm with a couple of friends who had never been to an Indian restaurant before. We were shown to a table immediately and given a glass of Prosecco each and a rose for the ladies. So far so good. We asked for poppadoms but they arrived at the same time as the starter. Our friends took quite a while to read the menu obviously which delayed the order a bit. Curries were good but the sweet left a bit to be desired. However on the dot of 8pm we were presented with bill and asked to leave. We hadn’t even finished our drinks and had intended to stay for coffee. It spoilt our whole evening. We felt as though we were on a conveyor belt. If we had been told when we booked that it was an hour slot for the table it would have helped. Won’t be going again for valentines night.

Booked in for the valentines special at £20 a head. Basically as it turned out it’s a one hour slot no matter what drinks you order or what additional food you order on top of the basic three course menu. Have you ever had the bill thrown on the table as soon as the desert of semi frozen New York cheesecake was served? As for the food. mixed starter was ok. Usual stuff. The pre-picked (take it or leave it starter) was put on the table even before we’d had a chance to pick the main dish from the menu. The main curry was lacking taste and consistency. Very similar to the one you can buy at Morrison’s. Perhaps it’s the same chef?Dessert should have been taken out of the freezer a lot sooner than it was. Still Little bits of ice in it. Welcoming Prosecco was just not welcoming at all. Poor quality stuff. The roses for the ladies were a nice touch. All in all it was as average as it could get and the curry was not a decent quality. Felt force fed and pushed out as soon as was humanly possible. A special valentines meal?? That it was not. Clearly all about a quantity of customers and not quality.

Had a sit down meal here on a Weds evening. Normally go to Thirsk but wanted to try a different place. The staff are great and it felt like a friendly place. It was quite busy when we arrived. The prices are also very reasonable, probably lower than others in the area. But more importantly the food was really good. Had a King Prawn Puri starter, after the obligatory poppadoms, then a King Prawn shashlik with a man bread. Couldn’t finish a it all and my wife took half of her main course home. Really enjoyed it and would recommend to anyone to try it.

I have visited Shahi Raj a few times, and my most recent visit was really quite excellent. The food was absolutely delicious. The customer service here is second to none, our waiter, Shahed, was brilliant. It is well worth having a chat with the staff for their recommendations if you are unsure or want to try something different - they are excellent at guiding you on to something that you would enjoy and what to pair it up with. I usually stick to the same order at an Indian but thoroughly enjoyed going out of my comfort zone and trying something different - well worth it. All the food is excellent value, the restaurant is clean and bright, and buzzing on a busy night. Highly recommend and can’t wait to go back!

Haven't been in for a 'sitty down meal' here for ages, last time was before they had a refurb & it was only ok but the staff have gone some extra miles to improve things. We called without booking on Friday 27th December as we didn't expect it to be very busy at this time of year but there were a few tables occupied & we were sat down straight away. Very quick service with drinks arriving within seconds of ordering, same with starters which were all piping hot. The waiters gave us plenty of time between starters & mains & once again everything was hot & very tasty. Quite often with so many Indian eateries, food all tastes the same but are different colours! My Lamb Multani was delicious & all 4 of us were stuffed! Highly recommended.

Me and my wife popped into the Shahi Raj and had a lovely meal we were staying in the Crown Hotel so just walked straight over the road.Customer service was faultless and I would definitely return if back in the area again.The size of the curry portions are not enough to share so just bear that in mind but we were very satisfied all round with the Shahi Raj.

Ate in here & a couple of takeaways a few times. Everything was really nice. Everything from poppadoms, starters, curries & Naan breads were all nicely cooked & tasty. Good service when eating in.

This is our local Indian restaurant and takeaway. Recently refurbed, it doesn't look a lot different to me. However, saying that the food is delicious and the service is friendly and quick. Would recommend this little tucked away jewel in Boroughbridges crown.

We were looking for somewhere to eat whilst travelling south on the A1M and popped into Boroughbridge to find somewhere. We came across the Shahi Raj and thought it looked a good restaurant and the cooking smells were very inviting. The waiter was very welcoming. I had a lamb dopiaza and my husband had the lamb Rajasthani jalfrezi. The lamb in both dishes was tasty and tender. No chewy bits at all. The sauces were delicious. The restaurant was clean and nicely laid out. The toilets were very clean. The draught lager (don't know what brand it was) was very good and for £3.50 a pint you can't go wrong. We would recommend this restaurant.

Being local we visit the Shahi Raj frequently and we have never had a bad meal. The staff are very helpful and friendly, the atmosphere is relaxed and leisurely and the choice of food is excellent.

We visited Boroughbridge this weekend and had a meal at Shahi Raj. It was a busy night both in the restaurant and the take away. We found the staff friendly and attentive. We found the food to be reasonably priced and good value for money. But what stands out in our memory was the waiter followed us out of the restaurant to return an overpayment. Such honesty is rare in this day and age.

Called here for the first time on Sunday evening and very pleased we did. I would recommend booking a table as the restaurant was busy as well as regular takeaway orders being collected. We ordered the Tandoori Cocktail for 2 as a starter, which was fabulous value at £6.95 and offered a mixture of tandoori chicken, sheek kebab, chicken and lamb tikka and onion bhaji - all piping hot with a generous side salad and mint yoghurt. There’s also plenty to choose from in terms of main courses - we ordered the Chicken Multani, which was nice and spicy and the Shahi Raj Special - both were great and a change from the norm!! Loads of the usual sides and breads available - the service throughout our meal was excellent and the restaurant decor was modern and light. A definite must visit for anyone in the area or just passing through Boroughbridge. Given the amount we ordered for two with drinks on top, the overall bill was very reasonable and well worth it! We will be back.

In three to four years have spent multiple thousands - no complaint. Complained last night as food lacked flavour, asked for refund - not entertained. Will not use again - Shahi Raj poor customer service and poor quality food - recognise when you have got it wrong!!!

We live in Wales and planned our motorhome holiday to begin in Boroughbridge simply because of the Shahi Raj. We ate here last time we visited and had two takeaways in three days and sat in the restaurant on Monday night and had a takeaway on Tuesday. It really is superb. We have eaten in a lot of Indian restaurants and they are by far the best anywhere. If we lived here we'd have them on speed dial. The food, the restaurant, the service and the staff are all excellent. I can highly recommend them. Can't wait for our next visit. Thank you!

Great atmosphere, really welcoming, very smart staff and very very friendly, the food was excellent, exactly what we ordered and manageable portion size, you would not want to leave any at the end it was too good, nothing was too much trouble. A friend and I went to the Shahi Raj last night for a meal. The Restaurant is tastefully decorated and light. We sat in the window and studied the Menu. The staff were very courteous and smartly dressed. We started with Poppadums and Pickles. Our main courses were delicious. Mine was spicy, not overpowering and my friend said her meal was lovely too. Prices are very reasonable. There was a steady stream of diners and people collecting takeaways. We will definitely be returning.

Returned for our second visit and were not disappointed. Despite a slight mix up with our table which was amicably resolved we were quickly seated. The service throughout was excellent and unhurried. All the standard Indian restaurant menu was available and it is licensed with a good choice of beers.

We have been meaning to come here for some time and, having read all the glowing reviews, I looked forward to adding to them - but in all honesty I can’t. Perhaps it was in the timing, or because we strayed from the normal menu, but some of our food was distinctly average.
