Sea Salt Bistro Take Away in Argyll & Bute

This very casual, simple cafe had very tasty food. If you do not want pizza, the menu is limited, but the soup and mussels we had was perfectly cooked and delicious.

Food was absolutely delicious & very tasty, service was A1, staff delightful & very pleasant, all three of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal, great choice on menu, Atmosphere very friendly & relaxing,looking forward to our next visit 😍

Visited the seasalt while on holiday in Islay. Everyone of the courses we had were delicious. Fantastic menu and great service. I would highly recommend a visit here if you are on the Island.

Great evening had here tonight . Lovely welcome from staff . Nice range on the menu plus they have a huge choice of pizzas . Everything was served steaming hot . We would recommend the risotto, the seafood linguine and the chicken schnitzel. The cranachen was also very good .

On s’y est précipité par temps de pluie et on y a vraiment bien mangé. On y a fait notre première rencontre avec les huîtres de la ferme d’ostréiculture de Gruinart. Laiteuses, charnues et conséquentes, elles sont savoureuses et pas du tout salées. Ensuite nous avons poursuivi avec des moules savoureuses.

I was in touch with Yan for a few months before we visited the island because I know there are only so many places that can take groups of 18 people on Islay. From the start he couldn't have been more helpful. And on the day he was expecting us, we had two tables next to each other, and there was plenty of space and no rush at all. Amazingly, he had told us we didn't need to pre-order so we all took some time looking at the amazing seafood menu that is offered. I think most of us had different things but I can recommend the oysters, scallops and tuna steak very, very highly. I then had cranachan for dessert which I really didn't need but always find it very hard to resist. Throughout it all Yan was great. He has a wonderfully outgoing personality - he kept the children entertained while making sure that all the adults were well looked after with drinks and food. He dealt with our one allergy query swiftly and well and all in all made us feel very welcome. This is definitely a place I would recommend and one that I will return to when I next visit the island.

Booked a table here for our last night on Islay and it was the perfect end to a great week on this beautiful island. Excellent, friendly service and utterly amazing food. The Scallops, Beetroot & Goats Cheese and Mussels starters set us up for excellent dishes of Langoustines, Smoked Haddock Risotto and Tuna Steak (and a little side of Oysters), washed down with a very tasty Sauvignon Blanc. Delicious, fresh seafood from an amazing little restaurant. If you visit Islay and don't eat here you are missing a treat!! Booking recommended.

Nous sommes certes arrivés avec 25 minutes de retard, la patronne nous a hurlé 3 fois dessus en nous précisant notre retard. On avait l’impression d’être a l école alors même que 2 tables étaient disponibles et de grandes tablées étaient en cours donc on aurait très vite pu récupérer les autres. À fuir tout simplement!

Visited in July 24, the staff were friendly, the food was excellent quality and the portion size was really generous. Really recommend this lovely restaurant

Waiter, atmosphere, and food were really pleasant. We arrived at 18:00 on Tuesday 18 June 2024, and at 19:15 we ordered dessert. A minute later the waiter returned to say;"sorry you can't have dessert because you have to leave the table in a few minutes for the next customers".

Really enjoyed dinner here. Very bustly atmosphere, friendly staff, good food and wine. Good value for money and generous portions. Seemed to be used by locals and tourists alike. We shared gammas to start, then had chicken schnitzel and pizza. Fab!

From the rude staff to the salmonella in the chicken to the frozen prawns, I had an awful experience. Stay clear of this place

we got a seat here very easily and were served really quickly. lovely hot soup on a cold day was exactly what we needed! i would visit again.

We were told that all tables were booked for 8h00 but between the time we went there and the time the guests arrived we would have had the time to seat down and eat our takeaway. The pizzas were OK.

We popped in for lunch and the menu was quite extensive. The the warmed goats cheese and Stornaway black pudding salad was very good and the coffee was also nicely served.

Could not fault the experience, welcoming staff, Covid compliant & the food outstanding value. All food cooked to perfection.

Had mother's Day lunch in seasalt. Food was excellent, service was excellent, and for a very very reasonable price. We had a great time.

Drove down from Bowmore just to get some takeaway food and was not disappointed. Had fish and chips and a chicken fried rice. Yan’s SeaSalt Bistro continues to delight customers and locals with his delicious Sunday Roast Menu. On Sunday, January 17, 2021, we enjoyed our fresh & delightful starter: Loch Fyfe Smoked Salmon & Avocado with Cream Cheese Dill Lime Dressing. For the main course, one of us gladly took on Slow Braised Lamb Shoulder with All Trimmings while the other happily enjoyed Roast Confit Chicken Breast with Mash Potatoes & Peppercorn Sauce. For dessert, we savored (1) Warm Brioche Bread Butter Pudding with Chantilly Cream & Berry Compose and (2) Hot Chocolate Fudge Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream. The three-course Sunday Roast Menu is just £15 - Such fantastic fine-dining deal comes in fresh and generous portions every Sunday. On Sunday, January 24, 2021, Yan featured a few tasty offerings that celebrated Burns Night: a thicker version of Cock a Leekie Soup with Bread and Butter as one of the three starters and Traditional Haggis, Neeps & Tatties with an Islay Malt Whisky Jus as one of the three mains. For our dessert that night, we chose Yan’s Sticky Toffee Pudding with Toffee Sauce & Vanilla Ice Cream and Hot Chocolate Fudge Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream. We always left SeaSalt with happy bellies (thanks to Yan and his chef) and in cheerful disposition, especially after spending time with SeaSalt’s courteous, friendly staff and helpful: Jayne, Rebekka, and Dean. On Sunday and rest of the week, you can order from the regular menu as you wish - two of our favorite regular entrees are (1) Mixed Grill with Onion Rings and Chips and (2) Smoked Bacon & Leek Macaroni Cheese or have a coffee/tea break with Veronika’s Coffee Walnut Cake - another delicious delight! SeaSalt also has delicious and reasonably-priced takeaways. Many thanks to Yan and staff for their thoughtful hospitality and great service.

If I can give 11 out of 10 then I would. The service is faultless and Jan the owner went out his way to accommodate an extended family including a baby to celebrate my Dad’s 80th birthday.The food was lovely - Fish and chips, SeaSalt fish dish, mixed seafood linguini along with ribeye steak and teriyaki steak noodle were our meals along with starters like the Cullen skink, prawn cocktail and kids pizzas. The locally brewed Finlaggan and Big Strand lager were a big hit too!Thank you to your exceptional service for making this a very special birthday and holiday in Islay - where my Dad grew up

Oh my what a little gem!! He had fish and chips, the fish was beautifully fresh and well cooked the chips were proper homemade chips with the skin on.I had scallops and chips, initially I thought how much!! But then I opened the box and inside was 10 beautiful garlic butter glistening king scallops! 10 perfectly cooked large king scallops.Would definitely go back

The pizzas were excellent, so fresh. Chicken dish was so tasty. The staff were ace, very friendly and efficient. The menu was exciting. The restaurant was spotless. The toilets were the modern and so clean. You won’t go wrong going to this place. We couldn’t stay away.

Having seen the Sunday Lunch menu on the Islay Community page I booked lunch for myself and my wife. Because it looked such good value both daughters booked their families in as well. We ALL had an excellent lunch. Quality was excellent, service was excellent, value for money was excellent. Roast meat choice this week was pork, next week it is beef. Highly recommend and well done Yan and staff.

After being recommended here we were looking forward to trying . Because of covid takeaway was our only option fir dinner. The bistro itself looked beautiful and clean so we were happy to book.Starving we were -starving. I chose the chicken schnitzel burger and chips , partner chose pizza. His was ok but mine was awful. Chips were inedible , soggy and cold. Burger was dry and tasteless. It was quite expensive too, so very disappointed.

Decided to eat here on the recommendation of our daughter who came in the summer. She is a vegan and although they don’t have a specific menu for vegetarian or vegan they have lots of fresh produce and the chefs are flexible and happily cater to dietary needs. This time it was 3 adults. Mains and pudding non alcoholic drinks and came to £68. Portions were big. Lamb currie. Pizza. Half chicken lovely puddings including sticky toffee and cheesecake. Friendly service. Clean. Nice atmosphere. Definitely come her again.

Wow what an amazing little find. A fantastic menu choice with a variety of dishes. Good sized portions and reasonably priced. Love love love. Will be returning.

In Islay it’s a balance, please the locals with a cosmopolitan menu, and the tourists. First impression was questionable. However, we eat twice here, both excellent, superb service and well balanced food. Good value. Would have happily have spent hours over some wine here. They have got it right, credit to them.

We ate lunch at Sea Salt on 21st sept 2020. Fantastic seafood linguine - generous scallops etc, delicious sauce. Confident that it is the best pasta meal I've ever eaten. Partner had venison that he also enjoyed. We went with our wee baby during covid and it was no problem. Service great - highly recommended!

Had a great lobster lunch here, and an excellent fish and chips takeaway on another occasion! The staff were so helpful and accommodating, and the food was excellent.

We passed here and it was very busy with a queue outside Came back a few hours later and had the most wonderful cullen skink ever- at £7.50 you may think overpriced but not at all - there must have been a whole smoked haddock in mine The menu was more geared to dinner than lunch and as we were atying at the other ned of the island we did not have a chance to sample that

Il periodo Covid non ci ha dato molta scelta, ma devo dire che abbiamo preso la decisione giusta, cioè cenare in questo locale.Il personale è gentile e nonostante un disguido sulla prenotazione mi hanno trovato subito il tavolo.Personalmente ho gradito un'ottima pasta col pesce, freschissimo ovviamente e abbondante. La mia ragazza, allergica la pesce, ha gustato un'ottima zuppa ai funghi. Prezzi nella norma. Lo consiglio!

Having zoomed over Islay for the day a welcoming lunch of battered fish and chips and sea bass .... superb! Well cooked and very tasty. All washed down with a cheeky white. Just the business.

Nice little bistro cafe , I had courgette soupto takeaway , had to wait 10mins but worth it delicious. If I ever return I would sit in the menu looked pretty good.

Dropped in for delicious home made cream of cauliflower soup at lunch then returned for supper. Really tasty seafood linguine for me, lamb curry went down well for him. Great service all round. Good loos. Lovely Islay ales.

The restaurant does not seem to open for lunch. The opening times on the door says that it does. Maybe COVID related. Phone first before travelling.

Really friendly Bistro, very busy but a good atmosphere and all respecting Covid guidelines. We had the fish and chips and the fish was the best we’ve had in years. The service was so friendly and I would recommend.

Fab fish & chips, friendly service Bistro located in Port Ellen, opposite old police building & convenient walk to ferry terminal.Booking wasn’t required we were lucky they had a table free. Busy place. Menus on wall. Wear a mask until you reach your table. Clean toilet. Friendly staff, good food. Recommend fish & chips. Parking along road nearby.

Our family stopped here for a takeaway lunch before getting the ferry. We were very impressed with the range of food on offer, the speed and efficiency of the preparation and the quality when it arrived. Pizzas were a great hit with the kids. Also thought the measures put in place for Covid were sensible and well thought out.

Two of us had an excellent meal of scallops (with black pudding) starter and fish and chips. The presentation and quality of the food was really superb. The warmth and friendliness of the staff added greatly to the experience, despite the Covid-19 restrictions.Altogether, we had a tremendous meal and will very definitely return when next in Port Ellen.

We received a lovely warm and friendly welcome. Customer service was excellent, restaurant and facilities where spotlessly clean. Food arrived promptly and was delicious. The white pudding with the full Scottish breakfast was the best I've ever had.

Had the half lobster with salad and the food and service were excellent quality. Definitely recommend.

We ate in the Bistro on our last night in Port Ellen and thought it would be basic Pizza etc. I was wrong, On checking the specials board discovered they had a good selection of seafood and we ordered squat lobsters for starters then seafood linguini and half lobster with salad and chips. Really good quality and at an excellent price . I would def go back to this place if ever back in Islay. Service was nice and friendly so cannot understand previous comments.

I was surprised at the choice available - almost too much I thought. Chalked on the board was squat lobster - crisp and plentiful. Followed by sea food linguine: prawns, scallops and more with just the right chilli hit. On the other side of the table a whole fish was devoured. We ate on different nights in the good Islay places, classier surrounds, but this was the best food, backed by a good bottle of Albarino and relaxed and helpful staff.

Booked a table for 4 last Saturday at 5.30pm for the Tuesday (last night). Arrived, checked in and were sat down - tables spaced apart and duly signed in - Covid compliant.Drinks order taken, food order taken, drinks arrived, food arrived....owner arrived !!Thrusting the booking diary in our faces he said we hadn't booked and despite repeated assurances that we had, we were accused that we'd taken advantage (of something, not sure what) and essentially we'd lied our way into the restaurant and lied about making a booking.We were told we'd have to: 1) eat quickly or 2) have the food as takeaway or 3) leave - this is whilst the food is sitting on plates cooling untouched in front of us and other customers are looking on with bewilderment.Booking errors happen so we'll forgive Sea Salt for this, but the approach of the owner, effectively accusing us of lying was jaw-dropping. Rather than explaining that perhaps there'd been some kind of mistake which could be sorted out he proceeded to start arguing repeatedly that we hadn't booked. For context, there weren't other customers queuing and/or waiting to be seated and we were a family group of 2 parents with 2 adult children; not exactly a boisterous group chancing their luck!We paid for our drinks and left.In the cold light of the following day, the experience was so bizarre that on reflection it's almost funny in a Fawlty Towers sort of way....ALMOST

I'm not a particularly picky food person, however my order was incorrect and the actual taste of the food can only be described as "chemically charged" the food had no connotations of Chinese flavour or presentation Soy sauce is not a flavour solution! I will never be eating here again and I will also advise family and friends to steer clear.

At the moment very few places are open for business so this spot get top marks for being available to the tourists visiting Port Ellen. We tried to get a table but settled for takeaway pizza and haggis and chips. No complaints on any count.

Over to Islay for a weeks R&R, thank goodness for this place, only place to eat in or take away in Port Ellen that was open during our stay. Fantastic food & the local fresh scallops & lobster where brilliant. Take away pizza & fish & chips superb as well, really friendly owner & staff, a nice experience would thoroughly recommend

Simply being open is a mark of some courage and not surprisingly Sea Salt is often fully booked, the only place currently open in Port Ellen. The owner is strict but fair about admissions. The food is good and the take away service a blessing. Well done.

One of the few places open in Port Ellen during the pandemic and thankfully, it's great. Food is lovely, the takeaway and delivery options were lifesavers and the staff are just superstars.When on holiday I try not to eat at the same place twice - very glad I ignored that rule for the Sea Salt

Food is alright, service is bad. Even though we spent 50+ pounds and tipped, they didn't allow my wife use the bathroom right a bit after we left. We have two babies and are not very mobile. Wouldn't have hurt them. Rude

Ate here at lunchtime. Superb freshly cooked seafood - lobster caught that morning. I had 2 starters rather than a main - scallops and black pudding was plentiful and delicious, followed by Cullen skink - really tasty and very filling and couldn’t have eaten it as a starter followed by a main course. Eldest polished off full sizes fish and chips and younger children had scampi and chips - good size portionS. Staff very friendly. Would have been good value on menu prices but in the “eat out to help out” scheme it was a bargain.

Me and my wife went there for dinner while on Islay for holidays. Great restaurant. They have good hygiene measure in place due to COVID-19. Dinner was great. Came back the next day for some pizza take away. Absolutely delicious. Highly recommend the place.

Family of 5 had fish and chips takeaway. Really disappointed with the food, both the fish and chips were the consistency of cardboard. Not sure if they had stood around for a while but without a doubt, the worst we have ever had. At £35 not cheap either.

Excellent “antipasto for 2” with fresh shrimp, tempura prawn and scallops (all hot) plus superbly fresh smoked salmon, prawns and olives on salad, with some warm sourdough bread + butter. All top quality, and excellent value for money.I suspect the exact mix may vary per day, but on this sample highly recommended!

One of the few places open for dinner on Islay during our stay. Happily, the food they serve is plentiful and of good quality, and the service is very friendly.We sampled lobster (lovely!) as well as pizza and fish & chips during our visits here - you definitely get good value for money in this pleasant little bistro!We will be back on our next trip to Islay.

Busy little bistro and takeaway in Port Ellen. We dined as a family of 5 and had a mix of seafood, meat and pasta dishes. The mixed grill and seafood linguini were good, even if the linguini was actually spaghetti. The half lobster I had (grilled seafood £21) was ok, but a little over done. Super friendly staff.

Excellent, portions généreuses, personnel accueillant, cadre moderne, cuisine étincelante ouverte sur la salle à manger.Les langoustines sont absolument succulentes ! Gratinées avec un beurre à l’ail... cuite à la perfection... La grande classe ! Un expresso... un vrai ;-) pour finir le repas.Le homard grillé... un régal !Bref un grand chef à la barre de ce «  Bistro Take Away »... Une étape incontournable lors de notre prochain passage sur Islay...

We (2 adults 2 children) popped in this afternoon for lunch, hadn't made a reservation but the staff were happy to accommodate us. All of the dishes we ordered were superb the highlight for me being the fresh Islay lobster. Staff were very friendly, polite, and attentive. Would highly recommend if anywhere near Port Ellen.

Since SeaSalt's dining is closed during the pandemic, the next best thing is its takeaway. Fish & chips are plentiful and to die for, especially with cider. Beef Lasagne & chips are rich delicious, too. A few weeks ago, we also tried the freshly prepared chicken chow mein, which went well with our homemade stir-fry veggies. Prices are quite reasonable, and Yan and SeaSalt kitchen staff continue to be hospitable, helpful, and cheerful during this surreal time of the world.

We stayed in Port Ellon for a weekend and found this gem of a place , the seafood is so fresh the chef described them as still talking. I had the langoustines one day and monkfish and scallops another and can only say wow . Wine selection is reasonable and of good quality. Service was fantastic and accommodating . Definitely the place to eat in Port Ellon.

Very friendly staff who delivered excellent fish and chips to our hotel . Cheap, plentiful and delicious . They also offer a more extensive eat in menu which looked great. Sorry we didn’t get to try another meal!

I ate from here 4 times. I tried the fish and chips...the pizza...the kebabs...the munchie box...the fettucine carbonara and the haggis. The only thing I would go back for would be the haggis. I'm on holiday visiting friends and I've been here a month so I've come on 4 separate occasions to get the food and it's always been underwhelming. Over priced for poor quality. I don't even think they make their own kebab meat, it's shipped in presliced. I stopped going and started cooking my own food. You could get a pizza with better quality from the co op down the road. Sorry if this is harsh but it's my own personal experience. There is no love in this food.

We popped in for lunch and had an excellent light meal at a very reasonable price. The Cullen skink was one of the best we've had in a restaurant.

i ordered fish and chips and simply had to abandon the chips as virtually inedible If Sea Salt get their act together and produce fabulous chips then all diners will gain. The gentleman sitting at next table could also not eat all the chips.

Sea Salt is a very modern, spotlessy clean eating house. Food excellant, they have a good carryout business.

We got delivery from this restaurant last night and we were impressed by the amazing and healthy food. Well done!

During a six night stay on Islay we ate here twice. Both times I had seafood. On the first night the sea bass (Dorado) and the second time a platter with scallops, langoustines and lobster. Everything was excellently prepared and tasted delicious. Prices were resonable and service was professional, although some members of staff can be less grumpy when addressing their customers. This can not be said for the asian waiters who were very friendly and service minded. We had a great night here both times.

Self catering in Port Ellen, this bistro is a real bonus. Visited a few times for a tasty breakfast roll before setting out for the day. Lunch and dinner menus are tempting and hope to try before we leave the island.

My husband and I had eaten at Sea Salt on a previous visit. On this visit to Islay we had 11 people. We understood that Sea Salt is not a hugh place and they have two seatings for dinner. We knew that reservations for eating in the restaurant are a must during busy season. Everyone in our group loved everything we ordered. Service was great. We ordered pizza the next day, for take away. The third day on Islay we loved Sea Salt so much that we made reservations for 11 again for dinner. They did not let us down. Everything was wonderful. When we are able to return to Islay, Sea Salt will be on our menu.

When I write a review I do try and be constructive and always truthful. The Sea Salt definitely promises much, the exterior is nicely decorated and is inviting. The interior however is a bit of a let down and really is more of a cafe style rather than what I’d call a bistro e.g. little sachets of sauce on the table.

Yan and staff were very accommodating to two hungry travellers. Did takeaway on the first night in Port Ellen and then another meal later in the week. Although popular and full with reservations he squeezed us in for a delightful meal. Food was fresh and flavourful

We ate in Sea Salt three times during our trip to Islay and on all three occasions had excellent food and service.

We recently visited for dinner in the restaurant and enjoyed a lovely meal including the special red mullet. Service was good and there was a nice atmosphere. We had a take away pizza the following day which was also really nice.

Had a take-away pizza whilst waiting for the ferry. It was quick, the dough was great and good choice of toppings. Would highly recommend.

the place has an amazing atmosphere. The people are very helpful and friendly. The food i thought was amazing and you definitely don't leave being hungry. I'll go back anytime. Thank you for a nice dinner experience!

My wife and I spent a wonderful holiday on Islay last week (we used to live there and love the place.) Three years ago we visited the Sea Salt for a meal and had a decent vegetarian choice. Last week the only choice was deep fried cheese and chips which neither of us fancied. Later in the week we dropped in for a coffee and a piece of cake. To our surprise they stated that they do not do just coffee. This was despite the fact that it was approximately 2-30 pm and the place was empty. Even more surprising that they have a large sign at the doorway advertising great coffee to be had inside.

My husband had the Hawaiian pizza and I had the nicoise salad. The pizza was great, nice crust and fresh toppings. The salad had a large portion of smoked salmon which was delicious. The atmosphere is comfortable and casual and it was nice to sit in the window. I would recommend a reservation, we were able to get a 7:30 when we called earlier in the day. When we walked by around 6:30 it was packed and were turning people away.

They cocked my order up, but the food I eventually eat was excellent. The staff are very friendly and accommodating. My partner enjoyed her baked hake dish. The first dish I was presented with was cold and not what I had ordered. But the two fish starter of scallop and black pudding and a dish of mussels with cream and chorizo with a side of chips were excellent. (Sadly no photos). Would recommend the three fish dishes that we eat.

Restaurant en take away .Heerlijk eten , leuk personeel. Ruim van tevoren reserveren is zeer aan te bevelen want het restaurant zit elke dag stampvol.

Travelled to Port Ellen with Odin (Dog) so had to have takeaway but the fish and chips were excellent and the service good. Sitting on the beach with fish and chips and nice drink helped make it an excellent day out

Extensive menu, excellent tasty food not expensive, but not cheap either. A great location with good service and a very tasteful interior. The Take-Away was incredibly busy. We can highly recommend the Scallops & Black Pudding starter & the Fish & Chips - memorable! Thank you.

Our first visit we had a carry out as the place was too busy to take the 6 of us. We booked for the next night. Most of the food was very good however 1 of us still had plastic rapping round his chicken. The lady who appeared to be in charge offered a replacement which was not taken but the cost was taken off the bill. Wpould I go back, yes!

Very much enjoyed dinner at the Sea Salt in Port Ellen the other night. We started of with Bruschetta and Mussels then for a main, I had the Sea Bass special. All the food was fabulous. Make reservations, not much for dinning options in this little port town, but they are good anyway. Our server, Paula, was busy talking to the bartender, but she did ok when e got her attention. Would love to go back.

had breakfast in here after feeling like we were short changed at the local hotel on quantity of food a couple times. Plenty of food, all good in here. great service too.

Great fresh food , lovely choice of seafood dishes. Reasonably priced, friendly efficient staff. Book well ahead in the summer months
