Sea Palace Chinese Restaurant in Down

Dreadful. Can safely say this was the worst Chinese takeaway ever experienced by the eight people who shared several dishes. Ordered chicken chow mien and it was anaemic to say the least. Chicken looked poached and there was a strange congealed substance rather than the expected soy colouring. Noodles were edible but that was it.

After getting our order wrong and over charging, the manager (Ashleigh) refused to even acknowledge that she had made a mistake then tried to blame myself for her mistake while being extremely rude. She then went on to say and I quote “I am the manager and I don’t give a sh*t”. Threats were then made to call the police on myself for asking for a refund. I should have let her call the police as the portion size was criminal!!!! The situation was diffused by the lovely kitchen staff who had little English but were 1000 times more helpful than the horrible, extremely rude manager.

I brought my family of 6 this evening for the first time and it will most definitely be the last!!!The water jug was filthy rotten to start. We ordered 6 main dishes based on the recommendation from the waitress that the dishes were generous portions,”a good size’’. A considerable time later the dishes were brought out and much to our horror they were tiny portions. They were supposed to be “main” meals but were infact side plate sized dishes and portions with a total of just six (small) pieces of meat in each dish and just four in the fillet steak in peking sauce (£15). The food wasn’t just minimal but consisted of tough meat,particularly the over cooked pork and fillet steak. We spoke to a Chinese member of staff and expressed our issues to which he laughed and said he would speak to those in the kitchen, he didn’t return. We then spoke to the ‘manager’ who immediately became extremely aggressive,rude and unprofessional. I had two options on how to manage the situation, either refuse to pay anything or be decent and offer to pay half the bill as it was nothing short of half portions, at most. When I said I’d be paying half, the manager shouted obscenities at myself and my wife accusing us of doing this in every restaurant we visit and told us to wait that she was going to ring the police. We had previously asked to speak to the owner and relay our issues but we were refused this on the basis of him not speaking English but we could intermittently hear the manager and himself shouting at each other back and fourth downstairs!We had already placed our four children in the car directly outside so we told her we were more than happy for police to be called. During this ‘conversation’ with the manager, the blonde waitress began shouting and verbally abusing my wife from the table which she was clearing,telling us to “just bloody get out” to which my wife replied no,that we were happy to wait on the police,as asked.I thankfully recorded the verbal abuse on my phone. This verbal abuse lasted 10 minutes in total until the manager apologised twice when she realised I had recorded the entire thing. She asked us just to leave it that she was too busy to deal with it.So if you do not want small portions,verbally assaulted and made feel criminalised for speaking up as a paying customer I would think twice about ever going near Sea Palace.NEVER AGAIN

All I can say is avoid!! Would of been better going to KFC. Very disappointed with our food. The beef in the beef chow me in was grey and tasteless, the ‘salt and chilli’ is basically salt and pepper, mostly salt and actually ruined with the volume of salt on this dish. I know it’s a seaside town but our meal was double what we would pay at home which is also a seaside town. Definately not be back

Rude staff Dirty glasses Asked the server (brown hair) to change my glass as it was dirty and got a rude response and a dirty look.

Not the worst Chinese I’ve had but it could have been better. We had hot and sour soup to start which was quite tasty but the mains weren’t so great. Prices were reasonable for a sea side town. They don’t serve alcohol but you are welcome to bring your own, my husband shot out and bought a bottle of wine whilst we were waiting for our food. The waitress was very pleasant she never stopped running up and down the stairs delivering food, taking orders and answering the phone what ever they are paying her it’s not enough

Prices were reasonable and staff were friendly and quick service. That's pretty much the only good thing to say. The sweet and sour chicken wasn't anything special nor the rice. Overall, I felt a bit sea-sick at the end

We were welcomed by a gentleman who gave us a choice of tables. He returned in a few minutes with a jug of iced water and took our order. The food came out very quickly and was very tasty. We'll be back.

Tonight 7/05/2021 my wife and myself ordered delivery from sea palace, what a let down this was! We ordered our food around 6pm, just on time for the soaps. Food came around 6.37pm. On arrival this man came walking up our pathway, when I opened the door (I wanted to close It straight away) The man stenched cannabis it was unbearable!! I felt quite intimidated by this guy he didn’t speak only to tell me the price of food. As he departed He sat outside our home for a solid 5 minutes before setting of. I’m not one for judging peoples characteristics but this guy looked like he wasn’t on the same planet! we dished our food out the smell lingered throughout our home! Our Chinese bag had strong stench of cannabis this was really disappointing, this had put us of our food. I had phoned sea palace after this to make a complaint to be told could I ring back in 10 minutes then a short curse word and processed on to have her chat (phone was on the hook) It had left me with no option, I wanted to call the police! This has left a huge hole for us definitely will not be ordering from sea palace anytime soon. Very unprofessional Very disappointing

Absolute ripoff takeaway prices, eg £7.30 for a yung chow fried rice, (a side dish), probably due to the fact that there are no other chinese restaurants in the area and this Chinese is very much taking advantage of that. My advise, go to a chip shop or go to next town!!!

we had been spending a couple of days in Newcastle and went with the option for eating out / takeaway while we here for evening meals. been reading many review sites about the Sea Palace and to be fair there are a mix of reviews. however we gave it a chance and glad we did. we got a takeaway and took back to where we staying. the food was very good and would highly recommend. there was plenty of others in ordering and picking up collections while we awaited our food. we had chicken satay and beef curry and was on excellent in comparison to same meals in our usual favourite takeaways at home.

My family and I popped into the Sea Palace for dinner tonight and we were very pleased. There are six of us and the children range from 5 years to 15 years of age. The staff were very patient and friendly. We had a variety of dishes and all were very tasty indeed and generous portions. The price was very reasonable. This is a wee gem of a restaurant.

We came to this restaurant on saturday 3rd August as we had attended a wedding at the Slieve Donard on the Friday. We wanted a Chinese with the family so decided to go here. I have known this restaurant for years and never have been and to be honest it’s the decor that puts me off ever going. But don’t let that fool you like it did me. The service and the food were outstanding. There was 9 of us and everyone got different dishes and everyone really enjoyed their food. And it’s so cheap also which is a bonus !

Visit this restaurant often, food has always been good. However, they need to train their staff as we found them to be very unwelcoming, having a ‘couldn’t care less’ attitude.

Worst food ever stinking chicken balls dry noddles undercooked meat never in my life have I tasted something so disgusting in all my life

Read reviews on here and in I went in a cold night.Young girl serving was ok but she was conversing loudly with customer friends. Decor and all about the place is rough and ready. The seated area us open with the carry out counter at front as you come in,so don't expect privacy or a quiet atmosphere. The place had little heating.I ordered duck in teriyaki sauce with boiled rice. It came in five minutes. Rice was also dente but fine. Duck was good with a little onion and green pepper. But very small portion.One of the young kids seated carried on badly, screaming and shouting and throwing food all over the place. Two others played games loudly on mobile devices. Spoiled my enjoyment altogether of the place.I may go back but not for a while.Price was expensive for small portion. They do not take card payment. I leave you to make your mind up. For a place like Newcastle it's a poor restaurant.

Called in on spec, early Monday evening, nice welcome, place clean and cosy. Food was delicious and service was fab. Definitely be back 😀

I was pleasantly surprised by this wee hidden gem. I didn't even know it was there. We went for dinner on Saturday night, had no problem being seated. The restaurant doesn't look like much inside but sometimes they are the best places. We ordered a number of dishes to share which were very enjoyable and the price was very reasonable as well. They also operate a BYO policy which is great for your girls night out. If you are bringing spirits, they prefer you buy your mixer from them.

This was the worst experience of a chinese ever, firstly we arrived and nobody acknowledged us, until we asked for table. the girl who we spoke to didnt have a clue at all, we were then seated. left for about 10 minutes without being asked if we wanted to order a drink or anything, we flagged a waitress down and they then took our food and drinks order, this was the same girl that hadnt a clue when we walked in so when she was taking our order she didnt know what was what. 5 minutes later another waiter came over and told us that we had ordered wrong as the main courses each come with a side, whereas we had ordered sides on top of, as the girl didnt have a clue. food came out wrong, sent it back and then it was sent to another table!!!! ordered a chicken dish that came out as prawn and one of us has a fish allergy!!! was just a complete shambles, not atmosphere didnt appear clean, toilets werent nice, just an absolute joke!!!

Have to say absolutely beautiful welcoming staff. Warm seating beautiful table set out.. Absolutely amazing meals for us all. Everyone enjoyed to the best of the best Chinese in Newcastle. Definitely book a party to go back amazing. Well done folks you were more than nice. As were from Belfast we will definitely be back for more nights out...

Very nice meal and service. We have been coming back to to this Chinese restaurant for a few years and its had its ups and downs but our meal tonight and service was excellent! Thank you. Will be back soon!!! Back to your best!!!

Visitamos el Palacio del Mar, ya que queríamos una comida china y este parecía ser el único en Newcastle que puede sentarse. Primero que todo, este no es un restaurante así que teníamos agua aunque se puede dar la vuelta a la esquina y conseguir alcohol para tener con su comida. Creo que este es principalmente usado como comida para llevar en vez de un restaurante como la decoración interior es horrible y parece más un cuchara grasienta que un chino, así que no fue demasiado esperanzador sobre la comida, pero puede estar equivocado! La comida era muy buena tuve la sopa caliente y amarga y era muy bonita pero muy caliente y para el principal que tenía el pollo en salsa de chili rojo y ajo, que era increíble. También un gran agradecimiento a nuestro servidor que era apresurado fuera de sus pies, no sólo era ella cuidarnos pero ella era manejando todos los pedidos para llevar en los pedidos procedentes de teléfono además de ser la camarera y sirve la comida a gente comiendo.

Excellant take away ...lovely meal highly recommend was reasonable as well for the quality of the food

En Newcastle para la semana uno tiene que tener un chino llevar a cabo. . Cinco comidas eran ordenados y presentados a unos 15 - 20 minutos, antes de lo esperado, ya como el restaurante estaba lleno, buen servicio por las chicas que se tomaron su tiempo para explicar una pregunta que nos plantee.

Decent food. Value and choice same as every other chinese takeaway. Only downside is they dont deliver or take cards but understand this is common to this area

we were at an event locally and on way home called through Newcastle and decided to call in for a meal at the Sea Palace , the restaurant was quite busy and had only a couple of tables free and were almost fully booked but they had 1 table free for about an hour and were happy enough to fit us in before the booking was due to come in , we were served and food was excellent and service was great ,would be happy to go any time for a meal and would encourage others to pay a visit ,

We ordered 2 chow meins and a fried rice. The fried rice was ok but he sauce on the chow mein was like mucus none of us could eat it.

Called into this Chinese restaurant on a very cold, blustery Sunday afternoon. There was a couple sitting at a table with their three children. ( They were the only people sitting in the restaurant ). Very close to their table, sat a calor gas heater with two bars lit. We choose to sit near to the heater even although it was turned towards the young family. I have to add, that when the family got up to leave, the father turned the heater around towards us. We thanked him for thinking of us.There was one waitress working who was very pleasant. We didn't have to wait to long on our first course coming out.We ordered the Salt and Chilli chicken between us as we didn't want to be to full to enjoy our second course. But, when it arrived, there were only six very small chicken wings with a few onions, chillies, and scallions. Very mean portion in my opinion. We are used to better that's why we opted for just the one.On a positive note, it was extremely tasty.I ordered my usual, beef curry with half chips and half rice. Again, very good. However, my husbands choice of Duck in oyster sauce came out in a very small dish with an awful lot of vegetables on the plate. I inquired, 'Where's the meat'? It was very thinly sliced hidden underneath the vegetables. My husband asked me if I would like to try a piece of his duck when i did, i found it quite fatty and tough. The sauce wasn't that great either. Disappointing experience. Needs urgent attention inside and out.

Food is good quality & good value but restaurant is not great. Very out dated and lacking any decor. Take out seems to be better option. Don't take credit/debit card. BYOB but not soft drinks. Young staff friendly & helpful.

Had a lovely experience at the Sea Palace recently.. We were staying in a nearby caravan park and decided on a chinese! After reading through some of the reviews I was weary of ordering but in the end chose to go ahead on the young staffs recommendations! They were super friendly & knowledgable plus food was GREAT!

We had Chicken chow mein, crispy chicken in honey chili, chicken Peking both with fried rice and a portion of chips between 3 adults and 1 child. Was delicious! Maybe more juice/sauce in the chow mein but honestly will be back in a few weeks and will return here. Complementary Prawn crackers would be nice but you have to buy them......

Visiting Newcastle for the weekend we fancied a Chinese carryout. It was very tasty- chicken fried rice and honey chilli chicken.

This restaurant appeared on our gluten free app with a 5 start recommendation. We nearly left before ordering, and in retrospect, we should have. There was only one other table of diners, and the waiter/cashier ignored us for more than 5 minutes before presenting us with menus. Another ridiculous wait to place the order. Food was certainly not worth the wait.

Really couldn't fault this place, the waiter was brilliant we asked for a slight change to our duck dish so the chef came out to speak with us and it wasn't a problem....the food was amazing, a lovely atmosphere in the restaurant will be back

This is a fantastic Chinese Restaurant. There were 20 of us and when we arrived the place was buzzing with happy diners. The staff are really friendly and efficient, but most importantly the food was gorgeous! As a large party there was a variety of food on the table and everything I tasted was great. Lovely fresh ingredients and great portions too. It still retains its old charm of white paper tablecloths and the superser heater in the corner, oh and it's stil BYO. All for about a tenner a head, how can you beat that!

was here at halloween. got chicken curry and fried rice it was absoultely delicious. would recommend here to anyone :)

We have come to the sea palace on numerous occasions and each time we visit we get excellent service. We have eaten in many Chinese restaurants in Northern Ireland but Sea Palace would top them concerning dietary requirements . With two coeliac people in the family they cater so well for gluten free-- gluten free soya , rice noodles , even gluten free dumplings that they make even though they are not in the menu . We don't even look at the menu now as they can make whatever you like and are very willing to cater for every taste ! And they seem to enjoy making different twists to their dishes.The staff are always so friendly and help in every way they can Always a very pleasant evening -well done Sea Palace ! Keep up the great work

Only got a takeaway to bring to our hotel room and I have to say it was disappointing, we should have stopped on my way in the door as i heard customers voice their dismay on leaving that they where disappointed with the in house serviceExpensive for a takeaway service but rest assured on my numerous vacations to Newcastle during the year I will never return to this establishment

I,ve ate here lots of times, the place could do with a revamp, but the food has always been great, and the service has always been faultless.

Sadly, the food was not very good. Mostly bland. We have eaten in many Chinese restaurants throughout Ireland and on the continent, and this place was the most disappointing by far. We even had to pay for the Prawn crackers, which have always been complementary anywhere else. If you like good Chinese, this is not the place to go.

We went here on a Saturday night just take away to bring back to our B and B and eat in the room , the place looked nice and lots and lots of people arriving !! We ordered chicken balls and gravy and chips and chicken in cashew nuts it was just the best Chinese ive had in a while
