Sandy Lane Chippy Skelmersdale in West Lancashire

Was told they had new owners so thought we’d give it a try. We ordered Special Chow Mein and Salt and Pepper Ribs, the Chow Mein was bland which is unusual for a Chinese and as for the so called Salt and Pepper Ribs they were really poor and like the Chow Mein it was really lacking in flavour. Won’t be getting my Chinese from there anymore.

Don’t be sucked in to read these reviews as they’re dated months apart, they do tens of thousands of meals in between these reviews, and no one bothers to write anything about the perfect meals. The lads in work all love it there. And I get the Singapore vermicelli it’s amazing, rivalled only by actual restaurants in Singapore I think !!! My misses is off there now, I only came on trip advisor to get the number, And seen the reviews. We eat Al around the world and don’t mind spending £50 plus per main when dining out, and I’ve reached 25 stone in my prime !! so my recommendation isn’t from someone that doesn’t know a thing about food.

Chippy tea night..thought we'd try here...fish ,nothing special just OK.. savory cakes and chopsui rolls lovely.. Mike's chippy 100%better

Ordered 4 meals tonight and yet again one of the bag of chips and a portion of mushy peas was missing. Every time we order from here we always have to check the bag to make sure every thing is there. Unfortunately tonight one of our meals included a omelette and we thought the chips were in with the omelette and didn't realise the chips were missing until we got home. Can't be bothered calling to complain anymore as all they do is apologise and tell you to come back to get your missing items, which I have done before but really can't be bothered anymore and am now just going to take my business elsewhere.

Food was clearly microwaved from the day before as it was luke warm round the edge of the tub and stone cold in the middle! Dangerous reheating rice, and disgusting to serve a meal thats clearly not been made fresh! Money back with no apology at all! AVOID

Ordered salt and pepper ribs Friday night very disappointed got them home they were dripping in oil no flavour never had this before and I have been using this chippy for years

I understand in the current situation that things are more difficult than usual. But to enter an empty store, stand and wait to be served for a few minutes, have two phone orders come in and then be asked to move outside whilst they are served, okay whatever fine. Then as they leave others push in front so I still can’t come in. Finally get in, and I’m asked to leave the store for phone orders again! Even one of the staff said bloody hell he’s in and out like a yo-yo. And then to try and blame me for walking away! Wish you luck in current pandemic - looks like you’ll need it with such little common sense.

As is the normal in these challenging times got fed up cooking day in day out for the family and a takeaway once a week is normally a treat! Tried here as it was local to Ashurst and the food was fine. Tasty duck and pancakes, chicken curry and egg fried rice, salt and pepper chicken and barbecue ribs. I wouldn't say it was like for example, Peacocks quality in Ormskirk but we all enjoyed it.

Bought fish and chips for the family. The fish was very dry and tasteless and a lot of the chips had grey / black spots in them. Had to throw most of the food away. Will not return

During lockdown I wanted a change from spending yet another evening preparing the family meal!! Decided on a one off chippy tea. Was so happy that this place was open for takeaways!!..£17 got us 3 fish and chips some peas and curry sauce. Couldnt wait to tuck in! So disappointed-dry shrivelled black and grey chips obviously made with poor quality old potatoes, over cooked strange tasting fish. Honestly awful..

Food here getting worse and worse, chips are rubbish, gravy has a strange taste and the fish looks and tastes horrible. I stopped going last year but decided to give it another try. Wasn't worth it.

This chippy has been taken over by new owners over recent months and I must say it is a vast improvement from the previous owners. Food is absolutely delicious now and it's a lot more brighter and a more friendlier feeling when you enter the shop now. Would definitely recommend people trying this place for food. You will not be disappointed.

What a rip off, just called in for a late tea. It's under new management so some things do change but when you get half the food for the same price from when the last people owned it, the meal was half the size and they tried to charge me the same price. I just walked away saying no thanks I'll leave and went to the dolphin chippy on Clayton Street where you get what you pay for.

I’ve seen the photo on this post, and would like to comment, I have used here since a child, and visit here at least 2-3 times per week, for 10 employees, and we never had a complaint, the food isn’t the best on the planet, but everything they do is very good, there’s something for everyone and never had a bad meal, but you can’t help the one In a million, they are human.

not bad prices all kinds of different dishes, everything from Chinese to English , quite nice fish and chips.

Okay food. Chips could be cooked a little more. Tastes okay. Although the fried rice can also be a little oily. However, overall it's an good chippy. Pleasant staff

Went to sandy Lane chip shop my tea after a pretty hard day at work, didn't expect a queue but people were stood everywhere. I had to ask three people if they had placed their order, so i moved up the line to order only to find out that they were waiting for the chips to cook. So i placed my order and waited for about fifteen minutes, when i got home and unwrapped them and found a pile of greasy chips with my steak pie squashed at the side of the chips which was stuck to the paper they were wrapped in.

Our local Chippy has gone down the pan meals are hit and miss more of a miss rather than a hit way to salty gravy looks like tar been here on many occasions over the last month not impressed shame because the dolphin always served good food I have been very disappointed we won’t be back

It is sow lovely solt pepper chips and chicken and lovely curry as well pop not flat they all ways keep in fridge over night

Good Friday.... we eat fish! Placed a phone order and still waited 30min! New owners are useless, the counter ladies are run ragged! When we got home fish was rock hard, over cooked!! Disgrace will not be going again! Rang and complained she didn’t have a clue!

I ordered a Chinese meal from Sandy Lane Chippy last night and found a stone in it in my first mouthful, obviously I didn’t eat anymore for fear of breaking a tooth. I kept the stone and took it in today to ask for my money back which I thought was a reasonable request. I was told that I couldn’t have my money back because I’d had the meal! Awful customer service and they’ve now lost any future custom from us. Avoid.

No pleasantries here, "what do you want?", exchange cash, take you meal and go. The Dolphin nearby has staff that actually went to school. Worth walking that extra 5 minutes. Ps, the chips are very good though

We use the Dolphin Chippy and Chinese on a regular basis and it is our go to local chippy, food is good and doesn’t cost too much and most of the time the service is quite fast!

Service first. One of three people waiting for food, utterly ignored for five/ten minutes. Other customers came in and were served, until they eventually asked me "What d'you want?"

Been here a few times but prob won't go back. At first I did like it but then the last few times it's not been so good, things like fried rice tastes greasy and microwaved.

Been here a few times as I'm at uni in the area, every time I've been in the staff are rude and slow. Also their outfits are horrendous. On a lighter note, the curry sauce is nice.

Go here quite a lot at the minute. It is not such a bad chippy, food is nice and not too greasy, staff are friendly, however if they see a customer that they know, they are more interested in talking to them rather than serving people, sort this out and it can be a really good chippy.

there savoury cakes are massive & tasty one of the few chippies who still put steak pie in fat beautiful,allmeals are very tasty

I feel over the past few months this chippy has gone down hill, I remember went the portion size was bigger, food was better and the chips were very good, But now if you like a half bag crusty chips with no filling then this is the place to go

This is one of our favourite chippys it's a mixture of English & Chinese dishes there is a good variety to choose from I would recommend the Singapore fried rice and the crispy chilli chicken/beef the portion sizes are good and the service is always quick

great service and food, by far the best Chippy in this area,salt n pepper chips speciality good value too I was in a long queue in another Chippy didn't move for 20 minutes went to Sandy Lane ordered and served in ten minutes queue of people there but staff far quicker and such a happy crew they all get on so well and it works

This is a very friendly chippy with great food, if you order meals over the phone they will most times say 15 mins but you may go sooner and it is just ready for you. It's very clean always busy and the food is fantastic.

love this chippy the food is amaizing and after going her for years ive never had 1 bad meal. the portions are really big and the prices are fab. accept phone orders giving you time to get there n its all ready for you

Been going to this chippy for 20 years now, dinner breaks from work plus a pie to have with a pint in the Market Gate. Food is hot, cooked well and I can personally recommend the savoury cakes they are the best in Skem!

Meals our ok, could do with speeding up a bit. staff friendly and helpful , clean and tidy not open late at night

Never have I had a bad meal from Sandy Lane Chippy, and that's a fact always enjoy the food and service is excellent from such a busy shop. It is basic yes no airs and graces and prices to match but the food is not basic or second best, forget the fancy stuff and enjoy the main attraction the owners are always so hard working and friendly chicken Kung po is my favourite but everything is good salt n pepper chips Mmmmmm

Good for a quick bite to eat. It's nice but chips a little on softer sides for my liking. Apart from that, good customer service and staff.

Depending on when u go it's good, the girls serving can range from grumpy to I don't know what the hell in doing. The gravy is awful so I'd avoid that if u want good gravy go to clayton street! My favourite meal is Singapore chow mein it's the only one consistently good!!

Will never set place in here again the food is really crap the chips are soggy with a funny taste (probley don't change the fat ) and the fish is from an unheard of breed sub standard

just good food good service close to home. very good chips and plenty of them real crispy batter on the fish and fish cakes too, boss curry and hollands pies the best.

Local chippy for yokels, don't think you will find long queues here, or it full of school children at lunch time, enough said!

One of the best chippies in Skelmersdale with a good mix of food available with both Chinese and English meals available it also scores with ample free parking available nearby

Its my local -- if you want chips they are OK the fish was decidedly bland and scarse the fish:batter rationwas quite low, I;m not sure what the fish was but it was emaciated and tasted bitter

Asked for Cod, once we got home, we found out fish was not cod - cheap imitation - coley I think. disappointed!

Great value every visit and the quality of the chips is unsurpassed. All freshly prepared and really tasty every time.

Total crap I bought fish and chips the chips had enough eyes in them to see you through the week and the fish was full of bones even my cat wouldn't eat it

Used to always go to this chippy on a weekly basis but lately the food does not taste the same, bought special curry with fried rice, the curry was like a thick green paste not very nice at all and the rice not good either. Will not be using this chippy again.

We have had all the normal stuff from here from a chip barm to a takeaway meal and never had a bad experience, only a couple of miles from our home makes it very convenient, we have been going here for years and will continue to do so

Chips o.k. to good, however, hygiene suspect insofar as staff handled money and food with bare hands without washing.Staff workwear dirty/grubby which unfortunately reflects hygiene standards in my opinion.

Not convinced the council hygiene ratings would amaze here but the food was hot and tasty and the staff polite.

My first choice for chippy food in Skem. Fast service, great prices quantity and quality at the same time. Huge choice of English and Chinese dishes and the staff are great too..

I used to work in this chippy many many years ago and still go in every so often for my absolute favourite...Spanish omelette with fried rice and a carton of curry! I have never found jimmys food to be tasteless mush. I have to agree about the length of time waiting however. My last meal was a tel order but I had to wait a while to be served with the rest of my order such as chips and curry sauce and yea probably this is saved until customer arrives incase they dont.also not sure how well chips would keep if they were wrapped up and waiting?

I travel 8 miles to my friends house to go to this chippyI also take my father with me as they serve the best cod and chips for miles around !I have never had a bad meal from here yet and I am really fussy . Any other chippy and I adk for lightly battered fish as the batter is usually not up to standard but I don't need to ask here as its lovely and crisp . Going again Saturday

have to disagree, this is by far the WORST chippy and chinese for miles around. Firstly, doesnt matter when you order, doesnt matter how busy or quiet they are, doesnt even matter if you phone an order through, you will be left waiting to be served for ages! They just dont seem able to grasp any sort of system for serving people quickly and in order. Last visit I made, I phoned it through and was told 15 minutes. Went round 25 minutes later (knew it wouldnt be ready) the place was empty and I was still waiting a further 20 minutes!! I think Jimmy (the owner) tells them not to start phone orders until the person is there in case they dont turn up, because every person that comes in and says phone order is told not ready yet and they are there 20-30 minutes.Then Jimmy is always in a bad mood with the staff and everything else. Some of the girls can be quite nice, but I think the hate is both ways between the owner and every memeber of staff!Then the food is just mush, with no flavour. Portions are big, but it just means more of the same rubbish to eat.All in all the worst chippy I have ever been in.

Worst is Mikes. But this is not much better. When you order you just have to take a chance for when you get served. They just serve whoever when ever, no system, no organisation at all. Food is bog standard mush, no flavour. The owner, Jimmy, seems to be in a bad mood with the staff all the time. The staff are the only good thing about this chippy. If you are desperate, then go, but be prepared to wait ages for rubbish food.
