Amazing hostess and the chef was very accommodating to our dietary requirements. Lovely little spot for brunch and great drinks with options of milk. Had the charcuterie board which was beautifully presented and shakshuka.

Don’t usually write reviews but felt compelled to report the poor service we received here today. On arrival we were told it was busy and there would be a wait but there were tables available so we were invited to sit where we wanted. There were no reserved tables and we told the waitress where we were going to sit. 2 minutes later the same waitress came over to ask us to move because “her reservation had arrived and wanted to sit in the sun”. No apology but not wanting to make a scene we complied and moved to a different seat. We were told the wait for food was at least 30 minutes but we only wanted a drink so I went inside to order as the waitress was clearly busy. After another 5 minute wait I was told in no uncertain terms (same waitress again) it was table service only and they wouldn’t even serve a bottled drink at the counter. We left. Understand that it was peak time (1pm on a Sunday) but there is no excuse for rudeness and poor service and I don’t think I have ever been asked to move because someone else wanted our unreserved seat anywhere.

Everything was lovely except the prices! It’s a lovely place to sit out in the courtyard, it looked beautiful & the staff were friendly and helpful. My daughter ordered a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel which was £12. It seemed a bit steep but we’d come out for a treat so I went ahead. When the food arrived, it was half a bagel!!! I couldn’t believe it - half a bagel for £12. It wasn’t enough to fill her up so I bought a side order of crisps which was also small and cost £3!! My scrambled egg & smoked salmon on toast was £14!! It was lovely but so overpriced. We had one drink each, the bagel & eggs on toast & 2 pieces of cake & it came to £50!!! I was so shocked - it’s a shame because I love going there but I won’t go back - I can’t afford to!!

I really wish I could give a good review because the setting and atmosphere for the cafe is lovely. I've stopped here a few times midway through walks in the surrounding countryside but will be limiting my visits from now on. The service is consistently sloppy - having to seek out staff to request food and bills even during quiet periods. On my most recent visit my cup clearly hadn't been washed from its last use, pastry and pudding selection was minimal and the food when it arrived was so unexpectedly molten hot (I think they must use some sort of machine to poach their eggs) that I was left with an oral blister the size of a 5p piece. This on top of the reaching prices just doesn't make for a good experience. Leaving this in the hope it might help improve things, as it really is a lovely venue and could be so much better.

We called in for lunch today and were made so welcome by the lovely staff. The lattes we ordered were really good followed by a very tasty brioche bun with eggs and bacon and an excellent toasted sandwich. We rounded it off with a piece of simnel cake which again was really good. It was lovely to sit in the sunshine, in pleasant surroundings and enjoy a great lunch served by such friendly staff.

We had a delicious brunch consisting of a croque monsieur, tomato soup, cheese toasties, cake, a latte, cappuccino, etc. The food and drinks were piping hot and of a very high standard. The customer service provided by the new manager Saffron was outstanding, who gave us a level of personal service unequalled in other cafes and restaurants we have visited in the St Albans area and far beyond. After our meal we also visited the Osprey shops on site and bought some attractively discounted high quality leather purses and jewellery containers, from knowledgeable, polite and helpful sales staff. An enjoyable couple of hours in a tranquil rural environment.

What a wonderful find. The atmosphere is lovely, the service excellent and the food absolutely delicious. My daughter had the smashed Avacado with sun dried tomatoes and feta and I had the truffled scrambled eggs with mushrooms. My side order of bacon was crispy and plentiful. Both our dishes were well thought out and the flavours blended beautifully. The tea comes in a good sized pot and the coffee is excellent. The pastries on offer looked lush but as we did not have time to sample them, we will have to return! I also noticed that there are small enclosed areas within the cafe that would be great to reserve for a business meeting or for a group of friends to get together.

We popped in the cafe before looking round. I don’t think I have ever been treated in such a superior condescending manner. With a distinct air of superiority by the staff member. It was quite unbelievable and shocking. The coffee was good but overpriced. We will not go back again. Maybe Osprey consider that treating customers like this is ok… but it actually was quite extraordinary. Go elsewhere.

Don't expect very much other than paying a lot. During lockdown I was a huge fan of Saddlery cafe. The JJAM owners were lovely and very attentive. However, I have visited a couple of times recently and the amount we spent tainted my experience. The first time I arrived, we had a basic, small glass of hot chocolate which came to £4.50 and "pressed juice" which was basically a 330ml naked smoothie from sainsbury's which cost £5.50. Needless to say we were extremely disappointed and in complete shock when they both came out. We were sat for about 20 minutes before being served as well. I went again this week with my grandma who was visiting. We got a panini, americano, hot chocolate and smoothie. This came to around £35!!! While this is a lovely location I cannot understand how you can justify charging ~£12 on a sub-average panini and £4-5 on half servings of hot drinks. Again, the staff weren't particularly attentive or that chatty. I won't be visiting again and wouldn't recommend taking people there unless the food and drinks are to a better standard or prices are reduce. Also, out of the 6 or so times I've been I have never been able to order a flatbread???

Lovely bright new cafe with delightful staff. We decided after I saw announcement that it was opening, to try it with my husband and cousins. We were quite late arriving, and there opening day was very successful as they had only scones & teacaķes left. Just back from coffee with my daughter. We had 2 coffees, a danish and toast and cost £15! Only toast they offer is sourdough. I asked for wholemeal and another couple asked for granary so there is a demand for other versions. Weird having coffee in a glass which is for water. My flat white just looked like a smaller version of my daughter's cappuccino! Was very worried as the fresh cream Victoria sponge was left out in the sun as were the pastries, uncovered as well as in full sun. Really lovely relaxing venue.

I visited with a friend today after shopping in the Osprey shop alongsideThis cafe has so much potential yet I am always disappointed when I visit. Today there were dirty plates on every empty table yet there was 3 members of staff. Most people appeared to be ordering tea/coffee and cakes so not complex orders yet it seemed to take forever to place the order and then oh my goodness did it take forever for the tea and cakes to arrive!! Every time I visit the cafe I leave feeling like the staff need a "re boot" as everything seems to take forever and it's so frustrating and I find their prices are quite high.Do the owners ever eat here and watch what is happening??There was an older lady and 2 younger girls working today, speed was not of the essence. I think all of the staff could do with some training. On the positive side the cake was very nice.

Firstly I would like to say that I have eaten here before and have had a great lunch with attentive staff. I have also eaten here and has disappointing and dry cake. Today, having been recently diagnosed with coeliac disease, and knowing that a lot of their offerings are gluten free I thought it would be a nice lunch option. I chose my gf dish but checked with the staff member that whilst I could see that it was gf was it suitable for someone with coeliac disease. To be told “I think so”, “we will be careful “, “I think the salad dressing is OK” is NOT ok for coeliacs. I have no idea why a cafe would make a big deal of having gluten free offerings (and on both of my other visits they did make a big deal about it) if staff members are completely unaware of what additional measures are needed to make it safe for coeliacs. Why bother? I don’t expect everyone to understand the implications of coeliac disease but I do expect a certain degree of helpfulness, respect and at least a small amount of understanding from those working within catering. To be clear, I would not have taken the risk of eating here but the staff member I spoke to made it clear that she didn’t think they could cater for coeliacs.

Met three friends at the quiet cafe Thursday afternoon. When we were asked if it was ok if she gave us one pot between two of us I said I would rather have one to myself as I like weak tea and my friend likes stronger. She looked down her nose and indicated that she was not expecting that answer! Normally they serve teas in pretty china tea pots but I got a very boring dumpy pottery one. After drinking our teas and eating the cake we sat chatting whislt waitng for another friend to arrive. There was hardly anyone there ... numerous empty seats and tables so there shouldn't have been a problem. Our friend arrived and we duly ordered another round of teas. Unbeknown to one of the snobby staff she was overheard talking/grumbling about our group and how we had been sitting there for ages without ordering anything. It was quite pathetic and we probably won't be going back again as they made you feel unwelcome.

I thought it great that a pot of tea cost £3.50 whether that was for one or two people. There was a superb choice of tasty cakes and I sampled a very nice one that had pistachio nuts in it. On the first visit, we also visitted the bric a brac shop that contained vintage items and antiques. This was really interesting but sadly it had closed next time I went. On one occasion, the sun was shining so we sat out on the lovely wicker chairs and enjoyed a great pot of tea and cake. The atmosphere was warm and friendly which is why I went back with other friends and also recommended the place to others. A great discovery.

I ordered toast (it was 11am) which the lady serving made a big fuss about (wanted me to order a lunch!) despite me being told by the cafe manager in the shop this was possible. Anyway, £7 for tea and tea and two tiny pieces of toast! My friend had toasted fruit loaf which arrived totally burnt...it was sent back and I think they thought funny to return a piece which had barely seen the toaster! My other friends cappuccino was returned with a large lipstick mark on the cup! One of the worst places I have ever been to. I could not believe how rude the lady serving was, like it was below her to even be there waiting on people, and have a joke at the expense of customers.

Went for lunch on a Saturday afternoon. Family of five, walked in to find every table full... Including a table for six occupied by a lady sat eating her packed lunch. Turns out she works here! Just sat, eating her yoghurt occasionally looking up from her yoghurt at the family of paying customers waiting for a table. Went to order. Looked at the very limited menu and made choices after an incredibly long wait. Yoghurt lady was up and working by now and offering table service to some people, others walked up to the counter, not clear what was right or wrong. Most things on the lunch menu have run out. Ordered an open tart with garnish, £10. Should be good then? No. Tasteless, lukewarm, with a cheap knocked together salad. And the tart was tiny. It was not a lunch portion, barely a snack, and at ten pounds it was completely offensive. The cheese platter was not a platter, it was a few small bits of cheese on a plate with bread, olives and pickle, but not the selection of delicious cheeses expected.

The only two positives I can give this pretentious cafe are the setting and the younger staff. The older women were very up themselves, the younger staff were smiley and helpful. It took so long to place the order, in fairness I think the young lady was training with little help from the older women!.we went and sat outside to wait for our very expensive scone, cake , soft drink and black coffee...£15.00!!! But we thought hey nice setting(,we pay less in liberty's!). So we waited and waited (,there were four customers in the whole restaurant and four staff).finally it came, the scone was flat and small, the cake looked a mess. Again we thought , maybe it tastes good..... No both were absolutely disgusting. Having worked in the catering industry, I would guess the cake and scone were at least four days old. They were so dry , crumbly and very unpleasant. We were going to say something there and then but the young girls looked as they wanted to please and we did not want to upset them.

We only joined them as it became apparent we wouldn’t be able get lunch unless we went in to the small space in front of the kitchen with till and cakes.. Osprey butterfly place mats provided and an eclectic mix of vintage cutlery made a promising start but then ‘eclectic’ (I’ve decided now) means you get a blunt knife with which you’re supposed to eat your cheddar cheese platter... lovely idea to retreat to the countryside(ish) for lunch and a browse of Osprey style but it just didn’t quite hit the mark.

Was a nice setting but £29 for a cafetière of coffee for two, a decaf tea and a cappuccino with two scones, one with butter and one with jam which in all honesty were not a lot bigger than a medium sized hen's egg, one small piece of Banana cake and one same sized piece of ginger cake. As long as people pay these prices the will be busy but I for one won't be going back.

Recomiendo encarecidamente!

Visited for the first time after living in the area for nearly ten years! Will definitely be back. I would agree the food is expensive but it was good! I enjoyed a very tasty homemade soup. Nice atmosphere and staff were very helpful and friendly. A great place to spend a few hours shopping and enjoying a nice light meal.

We were fortunate that it wasn't a busy day. The menu wasn't huge but gave enough choice. I chose the chicken and leek 'pie' though in truth it was an open round tart - very tasty although small. However, the salad 'garnish' was absolutely brilliant. Too many ingredients to mention. Great value for money - my meal was £9.00. Gluten free options available.

Although the Osprey outlet itself is lovely (as is the antique centre across the way!), the cafe leaves a lot to be desired. It is very expensive. Nearly £15 for two pieces of cake, a coffee and a tea. It also took they 20 mins to actually prepare the tea and cake. I wouldn't mind if they were crazy busy, but we were one of four couples in the entire place! How long does it take to make a pot of tea?! At least 20 mins apparently... it's saving grace was that the cake itself was delicious. Not sure we'll visit the cafe again though. Sigh!

I called in with a friend and we each had a hot drink and a piece of cake. We thought that a bill of £14.00 for an average cup of coffee and small and not that nice piece of cake was excessive. For this price, you'd expect great food and service. We won't be back.

My friend & I both had the quiche & salad which was tasty but small & at £9.20 expensive. The china is very pretty - antique style flowers. The cups had to be returned as they were not clean.Waitress brought our 2nd pot of tea & cake but had not removed the used crockery. As a result it was impossible for her to clear the tablel or put anything down.I agree with other reviews who consider £3.50 is too pricey for a cup of coffee.I agree with others that the pricing should be looked at.

Oh dear what a disappointing experience - I took my daughter there for lunch on Saturday 11th June. Not much choice on the menu but we both chose quiche with salad for £9.00 each !! mine arrived very dried up and tasteless. Afterwards we decided to share a slice of cake - the cake was nice but the lady who served us brought the cutlery to the table held by the prong end of the fork - not very hygienic and she should know better and practically threw it at us when we asked if we could please have another fork so that we could share!!! The total bill for two quiches, two fizzy drinks and 1 slice of cake came to £27.00. Not good value for money and extremely unhelpful and unfriendly staff. I will NOT be eating there again - shame because it is a nice setting.

I wish I would of read the reviews before I went, on saying that my girlfriend treated me, as I came up from Bournemouth to see her. The surroundings are nice and I totally agree with a previous review, overpriced and service poor, the only thing I would add, was the food was pretty bland, the quiches were dry and tasteless. Just felt sorry for my girlfriend to be honest.

Pot of tea in pretty mismatched china. The high prices are likely to keep the establishment relatively uncrowded. The courtyard setting is very attractive.

I don't know why this page shows a photo which is definitely not the Saddlery cafe'. BUT it certainly has changed since I was last here. Service was pretty appalling. Different staff, slow service and uncleared tables. The prices have gone up (like things do) but I reckon it's the most expensive cup of coffee in St Albans £3.50, and probably in the South East (apart from The Ritz). Had to send it back - not even hot and not even a biscuit to sweeten the blow! Such a pity for such a pretty courtyard. I won't be back. :-(

I love the outside area of this café. It's a great place to enjoy a drink in the sun and catch up with friends in a relaxed environment. But it's so expensive, £3.50 for a breakfast tea, and I feel they're taking the mick. Service was ridiculously slow. I only ordered three drinks and was left waiting nearly 45 minutes for them to arrive and there was no apology from the waitress. I won't be back. I think if you're going to charge these prices, slick and friendly service is must. Unimpressed.

This is a lovely setting especially on a beautiful May Lunchtime like today. The coffee was delicious when it eventually came (took at least 20 mins) which at three fifty a pop and no explanation on ordering/ during wait, was very disappointing.

We had a lovely light lunch . Most things are vegetarian and Gluton free which is perfect for me . Not cheap no ,but if you are there shopping anyway you are probably not looking for cheap ! The staff are all very friendly and helpful and some very unusual bits and bobs to buy . Because we made a purchase in the leather shop we were given vouchers for our two pots of tea which we had in the pretty courtyard garden .

This was our first and unfortunately our last visit. Just come away from the cafe. We walked in today at 2.30 every table had dirty dishes from what looked like lunch. We were not met as we came in. The staff were surly and disinterested. One member of staff grudgingly cleared a table, we sat for 20 mins nobody came near or by, and we got up and left. Shame lovely location and big investment by the company who owns it.

There has been a few changes at the Saddlery Café since my last visit: The café indoor seating area has been extended; you now get a free hot drink when you spend £35 or more; and the prices have gone up.I normally spend £25 to £30 here (most items are considerably more expensive) but on this visit I spend £35. Whilst this did entitle me to a free drink, I still needed to pay an additional £3.50 for my wife to have a drink.Whilst I love the ambience of this place, and the cakes and coffee are very good, I do not think that £3.50 for a hot drink is good value. I would be prepared to pay £3.50 if drinks came with something like: a luxury chocolate (or two), a couple of petit fours, a few biscuits, etc, but not for a drink on its own.I do not think I will be bringing visitors here again as the drinks and food are now too expensive; plus, on this visit, I did enjoy my refreshments as much as on previous visits.
