Royal Outpost in Carlisle

We’ve eaten here a few times and have never been disappointed- the food is excellent and staff go above and beyond. Brilliant place that we will keep coming back to!

Tasty starters of dumplings and chicken satay...mains of belly pork and prawn stir fry which didn't come with the stated glass noodles on top and the other noodles came separate not mixed with the rest of the stir fry...other main was lamb chops which were meaty and tender...£5 for a pint of lager....didn't have the best seat next to the door but no matter.

Me and my partner came for lunch. The place was clean, looked amazing and we was greeted and served by one member of staff who was very friendly and welcoming. I had the surf and turf noodles, the flavours in this dish was amazing. The steak cooked perfectly. My partner had the duck ramen and she loved it. Again saying how fragrant and tasty it was. They had a great drinks menu with a couple of amazing local real ales available, which to me just shows how great they are at what they do and making use of the local produce. We stayed and had a cocktail each and honestly just so fresh and tasty. I had the espresso martini and she had the Asian gin with fresh ginger cocktail. Both was just brilliant We had a chat with our server before we left about how brilliant everything was and the local area and again her was just so friendly and very helpful. Sadly we aren’t local but I would 100% recommend this place to anyone. And do hope to return one day!

Nice food .First time visit we all found the food really nice and we would definitely return again. I had katsu curry very nice lots of chicken with this dish. Wife had pad Thai. Full of flavour. We enjoyed the food that much we will try this as a takeaway. Which is usually a no no for us

Good service , popped in for a takeaway, person who served me friendly and very obliging when I asked for paper cutlery to take away . I ordered the Nasi goreng which was tasty . Good size portions

Lovely food, horrific customer service! Beware anyone who gets vouchers as a gift. Be sure to use them in one go as otherwise they'll be classed as fully redeemed and you'll lose out as we found out to our detriment this evening. Management didn't like speaking to a female so they thought they could ignore me and speak to my partner instead. Thanks for that...its that behaviour that led to the negative review. We will never return

The food and the service is fantastic. I’ve just had the spare ribs and the Thai green curry and it’s as good as I’ve ever had, and that includes my business trip to Thailand. Atmosphere is really good and the food is second to non, what more rcan I say….

First time I've ever been to this restaurant and I will be coming again, we were served by Jennifer and she was very bubbly while dealing with us, we ordered the Pork and chicken satay for a starter which was just fantastic. I had the Duck ramen for a main while my other half had Pad Thai, can't recommend this place highly enough, and obviously the drinks started flowing after!Thank you Sharon and the team for making us feel so welcome

Had 3 starters of dumplings, prawn torpedoes and bao buns with duck. All 3 absolutely fantastic, the prawn came with a sweet chili deep which was a bit spicy for me but that is personal preference.The dumplings are amazing!! Nice restaurant, great food and really friendly staff. If you are in Carlisle the place to eat.

Have just had a meal in the Royal Outpost.We are in Carlisle for the weekend and popped in for something to eat just after we arrived.Even though we hadn't booked,the staff found us a nice table upstairs.The staff are amazing and the food is to die for.Would recommend this place to anyone and everyone.Thank you so much to all the staff for making us feel so welcome

A curious mix of styles, mostly Thai but with Indonesian and Japanese hints. Went on a Friday evening when it was busy, at least till 8:30 by which time most people had gone. Nice staff but limp, sticky and well-thumbed menus really should have been changed. Main courses around £14, wine at £20+.I have to say that the food did not have the freshness one usually gets from Thai cuisine, both our dishes swimming in what seemed to me to be cash and carry catering sauces. Disappointing and would suggest trying one of the other Asian restaurants. Carlisle seems to have mostly Asian and Italian cuisines, as you will discover.

Great menu selection with some real alternative dishes to Tempt you from the norm. Fantastic food, great sizzler, lovely cosy atmosphere for two and great service couldn’t ask for more.

Rather go to the Thai in the market and get better tasting food at half the price. Just abit too expensive for what you actually get.

I am in love with the food here. I visited with my family and we all loved our meals - I have been several times in the past but not since they moved location, and I am happy to say that the quality of meals and service is still top standard.

Parts of the mean were excellent, starters and Nasi Goreng. However badly let down by Katsu Curry which was nothing more than curry powder. A very poor dish and we complained to the waiter who said he would pass it on to the chef. Suggest he or she becomes a little more adventurous than this dish offered.

They really brought this old style thai up to modern asian fusion cuisine. Visited here as a group when exploring dumfries and really rated the food and service

Very disappointed. We were looking forward to having authentic Asian food at last in Carlisle . But sadly it didn’t live up to much. The staff are pleasant but not overly a good experience. The katsu curry I can relate to Chinese chip shop sauce over a non descript chicken breast with side salad from, what looked like Supermarket salad bag, Come on guys how hard is it to make a decent Asian salad my 16 year old son can do it better. Pad Thai just ok. And..... please why is sticky toffee pudding on the menu ! Leave that to the pubs. Sadly won’t be returning.

Well presented and well cooked food. On the spicy side so be careful if you have kids. Had the bullet prawns, pork bites, squid for starters. For mains we had ramen, nasi goreng, stir fired pork and Korean ribs. Sides of rice and plain bao. Distinct flavours in all dishes. No complaints about any of the food

As a regular at the old venue, was really looking forward to try the new restaurant!Staff friendly but service was terrible!Had to ask for service after sitting for ages, had to request cutlery for starters, then after hour and half we got our mains, had to request cutlery and plates! Meal was ok but not like quality of the past place! Also big city prices too!Is clear it is not the same owner its just the same name! What a shame! Wont be back!

Poor service, food not great. 5 prawns in pad Thai! £3 for small bottle of water. Disappointing. Nice staff but not a brilliant experience.

Disappointing take away. Sharer for 2 contains enough for 1 person and at over £10 it is expensive for the amount you receive. The Pad Thai is not authentic at all, and only tasted of chilli and salt (never in Thailand or even a Thai restaurant in the UK have I had chillies in a pad Thai?) the chicken satay tasted purely of salt. I will not be returning to this place for a takeaway or sit down meal.

We had a takeaway from Royal Outpost tonight for the first time and it was ace. Will definitely be back - we love Thai food and have been to Thailand, this was just like we had on our holidays.We had spring rolls, fishcakes and satay to start - all well tasty.For mains we had Lamb Rendang, Pad Thai and Panang Curry - all really tasty and fragrant.I was a little bit concerned after reading the previous reviews about portions being small, but ours was exactly what we expected - two good size spring rolls, three fishcakes and two Satay - that's exactly what you'd get in Thailand. We were all stuffed at the end of our meal!

Paid £34 for a take away for 2 consisting of 2 starters and 2 mains with no sides. The portions were really small and although the food came well within the estimated delivery time it was cold and very greasy. Really disappointed and will never order from them again.

We decided we’d had enough of the Indian and Chinese lockdown takeaways and after searching on line we decided to try Thai at the Royal Outpost. We are so glad we did - the food was absolutely gorgeous and without doubt the best takeaway meal we’ve had during the various lockdowns in 20/21. Delicious we’ll be back next weekend and can’t wait to have a sit down meal here one day soon.

Have been here many times before Covid restrictions, we decided to order online for a delivery, what a disappointment, shared meat platter for two not enough for one, tiny bit of salad, two tiny kebabs, two tiny spare ribs, half a cup of salad, a spoonful of what I think were noodles, east/west chips about a cupful, good job I ordered rice otherwise we would have been very hungry, we were so looking forward to this but left very disappointed and hungry.

Everything was delicious. I can only recommend this restaurant. We had the Roasted duck in red curry and chili chicken.

This is my favourite place to go for Thai food when I’m working in the Carlisle area . Lovely food , fantastic service and never disappoints the tastebuds.

Really lovely food, very authentic and presented well. The restaurant however was like being in and old pub and didn’t feel very oriental nor the music that was played. Full of groups of lads so clearly popular choice for the food but not for a quiet couple date night if that’s what you are after

Really slow service, and to say there were about 10 staff on shows they’re just dragging their feet. Spent most of the time standing at the bar and chatting amongst themselves. We ordered the mix combo starter for £15 and it was about two bites each, no value at all. The food itself did taste fine, but no better than that.The lady next to us ordered vegetarian soup and received chicken, so that also didn’t help. On arrival we were a bit lost as it isn’t a shop front it’s above a pub. There were about 5 police officers arresting and detaining a group of people so to say it’s a relaxing atmosphere would be very far from the truth.

Excellent menu, combo starter defo worth trying. Best Thai food ever tasted! Friendly relaxing service and beautiful ambiance. Siania first night, she was efficient and polite.

Fabulous Thai green curry with fragrant rice - really tasty! Comfortable surroundings and friendly service. Would definitely recommend - and I would be a regular if I didn’t live so far away!

Beautiful food and very fresh. Lamb cooked tender and the sauces/broths accompanied with the fish were perfectly balanced. Generous portion of pad thai as a condiment. Dessert was gorgeous. Would definitely come again.

I loved my Bangkok "street-food" chilli chicken. Wimpy wife asked for no chilli flakes on her Pad Thai, but she got them anyway - she managed to enjoy it nonetheless.

Myself and 2 friends had just completed our long distance walk and chose the Royal Outpost to celebrate. Booking a table was easy using the Online form and we were warmly welcomed into a Covid secure environment. Our table was in a wood panelled room which added to the ambience although there was a larger, brighter room at the rear. Service was friendly, attentive yet not suffocating. Now for the food: mixed meat platter starter for 3 followed by 2 stir fries while I had the roast duck red curry with roti. The quality of all the dishes we all agreed was exceptional. This is simply a must visit if you love Asian food. Oh, and there is a Brewdog bar 50 metres away.

I agree with the last entry here. We went on Saturday night as we were on the way back to Scotland after a few days in Yorkshire so we thought we would add an extra night to our break before we went home. We managed to book a table for 7.30 which transpired into a good idea as it got really busy. As previously mentioned, the food was very good. We had some crackers with a spicy dip, Malaysian soup, prawns and two curries with rice and noodles. We really enjoyed the food but felt that there was not much organisation ( and not much social distancing either) For example, the couple sitting at the next table to us waited 40 minutes for their first drink! Indeed they had finished their starters before their drink came. In my opinion the place was crying out for a front of house manager to organise things. Would we return? Yes, definitely, although probably not on a Friday or Saturday night.

The food here was excellent, but they were over-stretched and didn’t seem to know how to manage this. We booked and pre-ordered as requested, and arrived on time, only to be told our table wasn’t quite ready - it would be ‘5-10 minutes’, which turned into half an hour. It was then a further hour before our pre-ordered (!) main courses arrived, and we had to chase initial drinks twice. Not a great end to a lovely week spent walking Hadrian’s Wall. After 80 miles you are quite hungry and thirsty, and a restaurant which offers pre-ordering implies a level of efficiency and timeliness which sadly this restaurant lacks.

We were passing through Carlisle making our way home and stopped here for dinner. Had to make a reservation as it is busy but to be honest can see why. The food is AMAZING, fresh,delicious, a lot of thought has gone into the meals and recipes and even the side dishes. Partner had a cocktail which was reasonably priced and lovely,we had veggje spring rolls and taco to start, a lot of different types of vegetables and a lot of thought put into the flavour, served hot and fresh. We then had panang curry and massaman curry both vegetarian,very well presented, hot, you can taste that the food is fresh. It was absolute delicious and topped off with a cold cobra. Cannot recommend highly enough and so glad we were passing through Carlisle!

My slider starter was tasty and simple, sweet with subtle spicing. Not at all distracting from the entrée to come. Their Panang Laska is immensely enjoyable; fiery heat, yet sweet, creamy and a complex flavour profile. It looked like a lot, but was easily polished off. The mango dessert was nice finish, though not quite reaching the heights of the other courses.Friendly, socially responsible, post-covid staff, and very reasonably priced menu. A definite must visit.

I like this place very much. Its quite beautiful inside and the food is lovely. Always enjoyed. Nice staff too.

Passing through Carlisle with my father and stumbled upon this smashing restaurant, food is great and staff match that, well worth the visit!

Really enjoyed my meal with these guys. Obviously due to covid-19 Restrictions, it was takeaway but it was a smooth delivery, food was beautiful and reasonably priced reflecting the quality of the food. I would go as far as saying, it was the best Thai Curry I have had in Carlisle and I will definitely be returning. Delicious and professional - highly reccomend!

Recently visited with a large group of family and all of us loved this dinner. There were options that appealed to everybody. Our server gave us good advice on which side dishes to order. Value for money, great.

This is a true gem of a restaurant, right near to the centre of the city (about 4-5 minutes walk from the marketplace. The restaurant has an arts and crafts feel to it, with beautiful wood panelling; it's obviously been a building that has had some local importance on the past, either as a civic building or a set of legal chambers (or similar).The food and service are outstanding, which coupled with the ambience, is a winning combination. It's a stylish and relaxed place, but it would also be great for a business lunch. Tables are well spaced so that you feel private and not 'on top' of other diners. We had a great massaman and a pad thai dish that were superb; to be fair, I thing everything would be. The food was beautiful prepared and well-presented by friendly staff, and the wine list was good and very reasonable. I can't recommend this place enough.

Decided on this after reading the reviews. A little difficult to find as the entrance is a small door to the right of a lively pub. They managed a table for 2 without a booking early on a Saturday evening. They made us aware that the table was booked by another for 8:15 which suited us fine. The food was without a doubt the tastiest that I have ever had from a Thai restaurant. Great staff too

By far one of the best restaurants in Carlisle, been many times never a bad meal, all freshly cooked and nothing is any trouble, I always request my prawn tower starter which is no longer on the menu and it’s always made for me, staff are warm welcoming and attentive, decor is lovely and a must for couples, Thai red curry is beautiful and you have to have a portion of east west chips with any meal, would highly recommend

Reasonable priced, tasty food with friendly service. My husband and I have been 3 times to the a Royal Outpost and have had a lovely meal each time.

We booked for 7 people to celebrate our sons 18th . The service and food was first class !! Spoilt for choice we will be back very soon

First time visit, food good overall, starters and main good, but souce to put over weeping tiger steak inedible, it smelt and tasted of vomit ! Really really bad....... good job i tried it before i poured it over my food. It would all have been wasted ! Steak good, nice place

Polite and friendly service in a lovely dining room. The starters here really are excellent and the whole meal was excelent value for money, Would find it difficult to find a better place to eat for the same money.

Our Christmas Party at the Royal Outpost was brilliant. Over 20 people were served very efficiently and everyone thought the food was great. It was a busy Friday in Carlisle but the staff (especially Rena) were amazing and nothing was too much trouble. I'd highly recommend this restaurant at any time of year.

Really enjoyed my night here, I had the Christmas menu with the Duck as a main and it was brilliant! I also cannot fault the service enough from both Zoe and Dan, they were chatty and made me and my colleague feel right at home, 5/5 would recommend anyone to go here! (I will be returning if I'm up here again from Manchester), the tip was very much warranted!

Oh my. Our meal was delicious. A 3 course set menu, couldn't fault a thing. Attentive service, well presented delicious food. Time spent with good friends. This place is a slice of heaven, especially after seeing Botchergate on a Saturday night! Big shout out to Christopher and Dan who answered all our queries from booking our reservation back at the end of August to finial checks on the night. Excellent customer service all round. Can't wait to visit again.

We came here last week as I had researched online to find a top place to eat. We liked the reviews of this place - and we were right to choose it. The food is extremely well prepared and presented. The staff are warm and attentive and will help with any dietary issues you may have. We had the Chicken Rendang and the Chilli Chicken. Both meals were superb! The starters - Lamb kebabs and fishcakes were divine. We did not opt for a desert - however - we did have a cocktail. The ginger and lemongrass cocktail is AMAZING. Very diffferent and so refreshing. That chap certainly knows how to mix a cocktail. Do try it. The building itself is very old and full of character. I am so glad we went.

As we were visiting family in Carlisle and needed to eat before meeting up with family and being Thai curry lovers we thought we’d give the Royal Outpost a whirl. We had a very good Thai curry and would definitely recommend this restaurant. The staff were friendly and efficient and the meal was very reasonably priced.

Have a favourite Thai in Leeds and nowhere has been anywhere near as nice - this I now my new favourite - absolutely amazing very tasty - would never have thought such a gem was here. Would even contemplate the journey on the settle to Carlisle just to satisfy the tastebuds

Took some friends 14th November. It was fabulous and the food was gorgeous. Thai fish cakes followed by caramelised pork belly and prawn stir fry which I will definitely order again. The flavour were just sublime. Lovely sides with brilliant pad Thai noodles.

Lovely restaurant I think above a pub in the city centre and close to the hotels. I was warmly welcomed for a table for one. Food is nicely presented and tasty/fresh. I ordered spring rolls followed by beef stir fry then some fab ice cream. I was looked after throughout especially with the chilli oil request for my crackers and spring rolls. Unfortunately no alcohol free beer which I know is an issue for many people who don’t drink when they go out and fancy a beer with food. However I would return and a lovely experience overall.

Royal Outpost is located 5 to 10 minutes walk from Carlisle Rail Station. The restaurant is nicely decorated with Asian touches. Overall the restaurant is clean and the tables are well presented.

Visiting Carlisle, we had a memorable meal in lovely surrounds and with great service. The meat sharing platter starter was delicious and our mains of beef massaman and pad Thai noodles, and kapitan's curry and roti chanai were fab. Highly recommended.

We were a party of 12 for a birthday meal. The food was superb with more than enough for everyone. The staff were attentive and friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Would definitely recommend to anyone planning a large group celebration

We were only in Carlisle for the night and I selected this restaurant on its reviews and proximity to our hotel, The County, about 300 yards away.

Being a typical Englishman, being “polite” like we always are, answering the question “was everything ok with your meal”? Saying yes very nice thanks..... when really it was pretty average, well this time unfortunately we had to say something! We trip advised 3 or 4 restaurants and decided on the Royal outpost after seeing all the great reviews, but the food really was terrible. We ordered a selection of dishes and all of them sub standard. Really don’t like to give a bad review and never have done but makes you wonder how this restaurant has got so many good reviews???? I do have to say I couldn’t fault the staff, very friendly and attentive, hence the 2 star ratings. The waiter did offer to discount the bill as we wasn’t happy but I denied that offer as that wasn’t what I was after, just wanted a good quality meal as expected after reading previous reviews.

I was pleasantly surprised by this Restaurant, entered via a staircase it is situated above a pub. On entering it is a well designed and comfortable restaurant, the staff were attentive and friendly. The food was of a high standard, I had Tom Yum soup to start followed by Pad Thai noodles with a delicious Chocolatini cocktail for dessert

So the location above a noisy club bar may at first be off putting. Trust me within minutes of sitting down the thud of music below fades. The staff are so lovely all of them, the feeling of cosy and the food..... I had a chilli broth for starters, amazing. The mains of lamb rendang with coconut rice was the best meal I've had for a very long time. Highly recommend and for me that's high praise. Good for meal with friends or as a couple. A new favourite for me.

Good quality Thai food and the service was good too. Weren't impressed by a group off other diners who were a bit drunk and swearing loudly, something the staff failed to manage properly in my opinion. Shame because this place was otherwise very good and worth a visit

My friends and I visited on Saturday 5 October, there were six in our party.

A fabulous restaurant and one of the most authentic tasting Tom Yum Goong's I have had in the UK. I thoroughly enjoyed it. We also had the Seafood platter and the squid which was also quite delicious and top quality in every way. The restaurant itself is a lovely old historic building brimming with character and decorated sympathetically with Far eastern ornamentation adorning the buildings charming original interior. The staff are excellent too and the chef.....well....just marvellous.

Despite it being very busy and the staff being under a great deal of pressure, we felt very well looked after and they food was delicious. It was out first visit but certainly won't be our last. All the food was piping hot and very well seasoned. We can not wait to return! One tiny gripe, they kitchen porter was drying cutlery next to us in the back part of the restaurant so loudly, it hurt my ears! It just made us laugh though and in no way discouraged us from returning. We'll see you again very soon, we had an excellent experience.

Catered for the children (4 and 8) well and took the time to explain what would be suitable for the children. Had a bottle of shiraz, delightful! We like our food spicy so we ordered the jungle curry which was stunning (probably on a par with a madras on heat) and the chilli and mint stir fry with lamb. The lamb was beautiful and worked really well with the mint. The sauce was rich and flavourful. Staff were friendly and also informative of the area. My son had the dumplings and loved them so much we have just gone back for the second night to get him some takeaway dumplings. We went on a tues/weds night. This is an upstairs restaurant and easy to miss as just a doorway from down stairs but well worth the visit as the food is lovely with nice decor and and staff. We will definitely return when we come back to Carlisle

Really enjoyed our visit to Royal Outpost. Nice surroundings - yes you can hear some noise from the pub downstairs but it certainly wasn't intrusive. Warm welcome; orders taken swiftly and advice was offered. Meals service was good - fairly prompt but with time between to chat. The food was delicious - all four diners enjoyed everything they had. Would recommend and will return.

We visited with friends who were here on holiday from Spain. We gave them their personal choice of four of the best restaurants in the city, and Royal Outpost came out as their top choice. As World travellers, they not only appreciated the quality of the food, but the lovely ambience of this historical building. The presentation and the quality of the food was excellent. The waitresses were courteous, attentive and friendly. Overall a lovely evening, and our friends were well impressed.

As visitors to Carlisle I'm glad we called in here. The food was excellent. At my request, the Rendang was cooked milder than the norm which was much appreciated. Good service and quirky venue.

A group of ten of us had booked and even preordered our food to make it easier on the kitchen and even then they managed to mess up the order and I was left sitting waiting for my food whilst everyone else from our party had already finished their tea. We were continually made to feel like it was our fault and told that it would take a while to make another dish. No apology or anything. We even checked the email that we’d sent them and we did infact send them the right order. We were even told to quieten down at one point. I’d love to give a review of the food but it just never came so we gave up and left. They even tried to charge me for the meal that never came with no discount till I asked! They eventually took my meal off since it never came and knocked £40 off the bill but only after we asked. Absolute joke! The staff were a mixed bag. Most were pleasant except for one certain member who really should not be working front of house. He had no people skills at all. It’s all quite disappointing as I’ve been there before and it has been alright.
