Visiting from New York we had the best fish and chips here for a birthday party! Delicious and fresh, and the staff are helpful and friendly.

How are they allowed to serve food like this, I gave them a chance after 8 years and it is horrible, I like to support all the businesses in Wittering, but this place has to give up, I left the food to the seagulls

Worst chip shop in Witterings Visited last night as Mobys was shut wish l had saved my money after spending £50 on this rubbish. Staff 2 ladies serving more interested in chatting than offering customer service. Menu don’t both half of the menu board was blanked out they had nothing on offer no savaloys, no burgers which was fine l heard at least 3 people ask for rolls and the staff said they had run out the joke is there is a Tesco a few shops up the road why didn’t they go and get some rolls? They are meant to be running a business obviously don’t want to make any money!!!!!!!!!!! After waiting 15/20 mins for our order we go home hoping to enjoy our fish and chips l was horrified when l opened the box and found not fresh cut chips but frozen chips had been given and the cost of nearly £4 a portion Good job l was going home this morning and the shop was shut l was planning on delivering the chips back and insist on a refund what chip shop serves frozen chips'!!!!!!!!!!! 23 years l have been coming to The Witterings this shop is letting the village reputation down. Don’t waste your money go to Mobys

If there was an award for the worst fish and chips joint in existence, Royal Oak Fish Bar in East Witterings would certainly be a strong contender. This place managed to ruin the classic British dish and left me with a bitter taste in my mouth, both figuratively and literally. Let's start with the ambiance, or rather the lack thereof. The interior of the restaurant is about as appealing as a rundown fast-food joint from the '80s. The drab and worn-out decor makes you question if they've updated anything since opening. The dingy lighting only adds to the overall depressing atmosphere. Now, let's get to the main event—the food. The fish and chips here were an absolute travesty. The fish, supposedly the star of the show, was overcooked to the point of being dry and rubbery. It felt like I was chewing on an old shoe. As for the chips, they were disappointingly soggy and lacked any semblance of crispiness. It's as if they were deep-fried in oil that hadn't been changed since the Jurassic era. To make matters worse, the service was abysmal. The staff seemed completely disinterested and were more focused on their own conversations than attending to customers. It took an eternity for our orders to be taken, and when the food finally arrived, it was lukewarm at best. It's clear that customer satisfaction is not a priority at Royal Oak Fish Bar. If you have any respect for your taste buds and your dining experience, I strongly advise you to steer clear of this fishy disaster. Save your money and go somewhere else where you can enjoy a decent fish and chips meal without feeling like you've been punished for some unknown transgression. The Royal Oak Fish Bar is a prime example of how not to run a restaurant.

What’s happened to your chips??? I could have fried myself some frozen ones at home but came to your place for the usual exceptional chips - to no avail gone are the chunky chippie chips and I was disappointed to get some less than mediocre supermarket frozen ones instead! If this is a permanent thing I will sadly be finding alternative venue to get my weekly fix of fish & chips …. Feeling disappointed

We had cod and chips, mushy peas, sausage in batter, and a curried roll - it was all delicious! The batter was crunchy, the fish moist and the chips were perfect!

The portion sizes are ok, I ordered small, and couldn't manage all the chips, but had to leave most of the fish because the skin was still on. Its a very long time since I went anywhere that leaves the skin on. There was barely any fish at all, just batter and skin. My husband is bothered by skin so he was happy with his, but for me, the meal was ruined.

Absolutely scammed by this local fish and chip shop on a visit. I was charged £16.50 for all of this. 3 regular chips x £2.30 Chicken and mushroom pie £3.10 And two small piddly cheap sausages that they charged £6.50 for. I asked them if I could have a buttered sausage as they gave me a regular and they said no as it was already being cooked the women was rude to me when I asked this. They did not give me a receipt and I was thinking why this was the price. They give a ticket number. This is the most recent price list below and you can see how much a sausage is? And they are full sizes not the ones they gave us. Furious about this, I have tried to ring several times with no answer to get a refund back from them and question why I was given this for this price. In all my years of being to many fish and chip shops, I have never been comprised like this. Do not go to this place if you want to be scammed by them and their portions and prices.

It’s always really disappointing when you come across poor customer service. I am a new customer, and could be telling people about their great fish and chips - instead I am leaving disappointed and knocked back. I walked in and there were hardly any customers - I chose to have chicken and was just about to order when the chef came and told the assistant that a large order had just come in... and there would be a 30 min wait. Given that I was already there I just asked if they could squeeze mine in - just one meal - a good business would have said yes of course - but no - it felt very jobs worth and now potential regular custom has been lost.

Fish tasted good but batter was pretty bad. Sausage wasn't great. Chips tasted OK but the oil clearly hadn't been changed in a while as chips were very dark. (I used to work in a chippy) Thankfully not local so won't need to rush back.

A lovely meal of proper fish n chips had to wait a little for the chips but meant they were warm and tasty. The batter was crunchy and not greasy and the fish v tasty. Very polite and friendly staff. Siento no normalmente dan malas críticas pero no puedo entender cómo alguien podría estar contento con este lugar. Pedimos pescado y patatas fritas para dos hasta los bancos de la playa. Esperamos por el pescado para ser cocinados, ya que no estaba muy concurrido, pensé que era extraño ya que era una noche preciosa y otros lugares tenía colas. Cuando llegamos a los bancos intentamos conseguir que los peces pero había mucho aceite que fuera el papel cayó a pedazos, los peces habían salido directamente de la freidora y no había tenido tiempo de desagüe, y aun así el bateador era más que pasada. Pedimos dos peces de tamaño y las patatas uno grande y tres tés. En menos de un minuto teníamos nuestro té y su marido parecía totalmente acceder, con una mesa para poder sentarnos dentro para comer y beber. La comida, preparada por su marido, llegaron poco después y no nos decepcionó. Las patatas fritas eran perfectamente cocinada y el pescado era magnífico. Todos estábamos bastante hambrientos y el tamaño de la porción era abundante.

The fish was very good but the chips were just average. My son had a sausage which he ate all of. All the food was hot. No good for me as I have a sulphite allergy

Mi familia me apetecía pescado y patatas fritas de un típico costero chippie, así que fuimos bastante temprano en la noche para perder a la gente. Nos encontramos con el bar de pescado y vagamos en Royal Oak. Había un padre y su hijo comiendo pescado y patatas fritas en una de las mesas y la comida tenía buena pinta. Pedir y tenía ganas de nuestro capricho. Después de una corta espera, que recoge nuestra comida empaquetada y la llevamos a casa. Era repugnante. Las patatas fritas parecía como si hubieran sido cocinados más temprano en el día y frío, así que había ido habían sido re-climatizada en mediocre de aceite de algunas descripciones. El pescado era viscosa y grasienta, y todavía tenía la piel. Pensé que dejando la piel en ya hacía tiempo que había dejado, pero evidentemente no es así. La comida era horrible. Sin duda, el peor pescado y patatas fritas que ninguno de nosotros había tenido. No podía evitar pensar que quizás la gente nos sirven las cosas decentes, y la basura fue vendida a aquellas personas que fueron consideradas fuera de los clientes. Así que sin duda no vamos a volver allí de nuevo, eso seguro!

I havent visited the Royal Oak fish bar for a couple of years because I got a battered Sausage that was raw inside and when I complained I didnt get a apology or even the offer of a refund.Anyway I was out for a stroll with the children and we fancied some chips and I thought everybody can have a off day (previous visit) and they cant go wrong with chips only.Boy how wrong can I be. These were the most disgusting chips I have seen/tasted in my life. They were re-cooked, luke warm, rubbery and very bitty as if I was getting the dregs of the fryer. Even the kids wouldn't eat them and they normally eat anything you put in front of them.We took them back and got a re-fund and a sheepish offer of some freshly cooked ones if we could wait which we declined.These people shouldn't be in business and I guess if it wasn't for the tourist one off trade they would have gone out of business long ago because I cant see them getting much repeat business from the locals.They are either incompetent at what they do or are just trying to mug people off with crxp.Steer well clear

New in the area, this was our first meal as a local. As a Friday night, it had to be fish and chips. No one else was in there, setting off alarm bells. Plus the service wasn't particularly friendly. Hoped the meal would be hotter than the cool reception. Unfortunately, it wasn't. The chips were wizened and hard, tasting like they had been reheated from several days ago using old oil. The fish was a little better, but too greasy I'm afraid. Sorry, but we won't be back.

We used this chip shop on a Friday as we were passing by and I have to say, the quality of the meal was abysmal. The food was swimming in grease and the chips were like bullets and barely edible. We didn't go back and complain, but we will not be using this shop again

I visited this place while working in the area and I have to admit it is one of the best I've tried. I'm a travelling salesman so often have take always when on the road. This one truly stood out from the rest. The food was cooked while I waited so I knew it was fresh. It was reasonably priced and a very good size portion. I chatted with the owners while I waited who were very friendly and helpful about the local area. Would definitely recommend to anyone in the area.

I was curious having read so many mixed reviews, so I went along just now to see for myself. The chips were hard, dehydrated and BROWN on the INSIDE - had no taste and had to be thrown out immediately. Quite possibly from the day before, but even then it was surprising how bad they were. They did not appear to be from fresh potatoes but rather frozen chips. (I rang before hand and asked if the food was fresh or frozen and he paused a while and said fresh) The fish was a huge size but overcooked. The batter tasted unpleasant and was very oily. The oil had not been changed fresh. I would be ashamed to serve food like this. The bad reviews were quite right. I can only speculate that the good reviews were made by friends or family...?

Best fish and chips in the Witterings - don't go to any other! And if the weather is warm, it's a quick walk to the beach where there are picnic tables for you to eat! Perfect. They even sell bottles on ketchup - ideal if there are a lot of you eating - those small packets are useless. Go for small chips though - the portions are huge!

Good food freshly cooked. A short walk to the seafront, we had this as a takeaway on a picnic bench. Wife (Scampi) and I (Plaice) enjoyed this with our 3 year old. 1 Large chips was enough for the 3 of us to share.

Me and a friend visited the chip shop on our way through as we were starving, we only ordered a simple order, I was then approached by a lady with a terrible attitude because I said that my battered sausage was undercooked and soggy, my chips were some what fresh but others were chewy, which gave me the impression they were from the lunch run. I felt physically sick when I got home and my friend also had toilet issues. No one bothered our complaint, they were too busy with her phones/ homework because of how young they were.

Had a meal from here whilst on holiday. Frozen fish in a very greasy over cooked batter with over cooked chips - very disappointing.

I wanted to take some chips to the beach and decided to try this place. Omg - the staff were lovely & very helpful when I explained what I intended to do (with the small children). Proving extra wrapping & bags to assist me. We decided on fish bites for the youngest & they were happy to make this smaller, charging less! Chips and a variety of currie rolls & sausages for the rest of us!! Food was delicious & everyone really enjoyed! Really pleased, thank you

Went here last night because it was the only one with a que out the door so I prosumed it was the best and I was right. The girls were really busy but attentive and "on top of everything" the fish was amazing and apparently the burgers were too. Will definitely be coming here again.

I had to leave a review on here after reading the terrible ones (after eating from here)But I must say, take no notice. I don't know how anyone could fault the food here!My wife and I just had a large cod and chips which was HUGE and absolutely delicious.The chips were lovely and the fish was was light and crispy. Everyone that said this chippie is bad were right the chips are disgusting frozen,overcooked and over priced.i had a small cod and chips and my wife had steak and kidney pie and chips,she left her chips and so did I and the fish I asked for a small fish which was £3.40 and about the size of a fish cake and tasteless.What a waste of £10.00.

After a day on West Wittering beach where we had lovely service, food & drink at the beach front cafe, we then called in at East Wittering for fish & chips. Rude staff at the first chip shop so called in at the Royal Oak Fish Bar at 7:20pm. Not a single smile, "thank you" or "please" from the staff. We were in there to spend about £50 feeding 8 of us. They closed the shop early, annoying all other potential customers. Chips were not true potato chips and the over cooked fish was tasteless and sloppy (underneath the burnt batter). Thank Christ they couldn't get into the can of Coca Cola to ruin that too.

Usually use other take aways in village and wish I had on this occasion. Two girls serving seemed loth to interupt their chat and checking their phones. No please or thank you, everything seemed to be too much effort. The impression given is that they are doing you a big favour just to pass food over My advice is to take away the servers stools and ban mobiles while they are serving. Fish average, fishcakes dry and chips dry and overcooked, most of them ended up in bin. This takeaway really needs to up its game if it wants to take custom from the various other takeaway options in the village. I won't be using it again

My daughter was treating the family of six to fish and chips whilst staying in west wittering. We called in at this Chip shop as it looked clean. My daughter had a long list of things see wanted and she started to read it out to the girl behind the counter. The girl was very impatient and had an attitude that she was doing us a favour serving us at all. When my daughter asked her to read the order back to make sure my daughter hadn't missed anything, she rolled her eyes and huffed. Here the customer isn't right, just barely tolerated. The food was terrible, the fish were over fried, the chips looked like the were oven chips that had been thrown in the fryer and left too long and our pies, although we were told they were PUKKA pies, didn't look or taste like PUKKAs at all.. Avoid this place at all costs, use the chip shop one street down, it couldn't possibly be as bad.

Every year two of us head of towards Wittering for a few nights camping with our sons. This year we decided to try a different fish and chip shop the day we arrived. The Royal Oak is a very respectable looking fish and chip shop in Oakfield road. The two members of staff working on the night had no customer skills at all and were even rude.With fish and chips in hand we headed for the beachfront. Sadly though our pleasure was very short lived. We had purchased the worst fish and chips I have ever had by a long way. The chips were totally awful and the fish was so drenched in oil it was almost impossible to eat. The main reason for all this was that the oil used to deep-fry everything was way too old. The oil becomes brown in colour due to carbon overload and tastes rancid and just soaks into the food.On returning to the shop with half our rancid dinner - the generic response from the staff was that we are busy so it could not be that bad. We were offered a refund witch I did not take as that was not my reason for returning, it was to point out that I have been a chef for 30 years, work for a formula 1 team and so know a little bit about food and fish, but sadly my well-mannered complaint was in vain, these people don’t care. It should be illegal to do that to good fish from our dying oceans.

Just finished our fish and chips from here and it occurred to me half way through that I should have taken a picture. I had a huge medium cod and it was lovely, as were the chips and my family's food...4 empty plates and 4 very satisfied customers :-)

In the words of my daughter they serve the best chips ever! Visited whilst on a camping trip to the witterings and the food was so good we ended up eating from there twice in 2 days. Fish was beautifully fresh, white and crisp batter and the chips were just the best ever. 1st night we took the food away to eat on the (windy) beach, 2nd night we ate in. Food was unexpectedly bought out to us on plates with cutlery. Definately worth a visit when in the witterings.

Had not been there for a long time. Now I know why! The batter was burnt as were the chips! Being a take away didn't realise until I got home. We had a long drive so couldn't be bothered to ever go back! The cook and staff couldn't even raise a smile. Very dissappear ingredients.

I like to try out a local fish and chip shop when I am on my travels and as I was in East Wittering I found the Royal Oak. I wish I hadn't. The shop looked good and the lady serving me was polite but the food was just awful. The haddock was chewy and full of bones. It could not have been very fresh, was it caught last year I wonder? The chips were just out of a bag frozen offerings. Very unadventurous. I really don't know how this place can keep going offering such rubbish food. Thankfully I shall not be in East Wittering anytime soon for fish and chips.

I have been eating fish and chips for over 50years. This must be the worst I have ever had. The chips were Luke warm and to me appeared and tasted re cooked, warmed up after lunch time. The Fish and the Scampi both looked and tasted disgusting both had the look and taste of again re cooked left overs from lunch or the days before. When we got home we just bined it, we will not be returning and based on this I woudnt reccomend, when there are other fish and chips available in the village.

Excellent fish and chip shop perfect location near the village and they have had a refurbishment that looks great.

We stopped by this fish and chip shop through being hungry more than knowing anything about it. What you find is a nice clean fish and chip shop with a lovely level service, add to that the cod and chips we had was lovely, the crispy batter and non greasy chips were lovely. We decided to eat in and while not fancy they do serve your food on plates and give you cutlery! Oh and one final thing the curry sauce is perfect!

We occasionally go for a drive out and always stop at our favourite fish and chip shop. We get their senior citizens special. Which is plenty for us as they are big portions. The batter is always crisp and light and the chips the best we've ever tasted. So delicious we've started having drives out more often just to pay them a visit! The owner and his wife always remember us and make us feel welcome asking how we are, having a chat whilst waiting for our food to be cooked. It's nice to know it's cooked fresh for us and not left sitting in a cabinet.

I went to this place knowing that down by the coast, all the Fish and Chip shops were amazing. I'd just gone down to West Wittering for a week in a caravan that my grandmother owns for about the 100th time. The best I'd had throughout the week had been in Bognor Regis and that was delicious stuff. Anyways, onto the Royal Oak. The service is slow. It takes about 10 minutes for your stuff to arrive. And whilst you are waiting, the smell of grease gets to you. Speaking of grease, get used to it, because the fish batter is DRENCHED in the stuff. I couldn't finish it, despite the portions being INCREDIBLY small, because of how it was making my stomach churn. I will say that the only thing keeping the Royal Oak from a 'Terrible' rating is their chips. Some great quality chips there, and some of my personal favorites. But if you're looking for a chippy in the Witterings peninsula, it's nothing special. To eat out in East Wittering, try The Boulevard or The Shore Inn instead.In a word: Greasy.

Thought. This was going to be the best but awful greasy crunchy fish and chips cooked in old aged oil and tasted terrible not Cheap either and that was on a Friday afternoon should be ashamed not. Sure it was even cod they should clean up there act or call it a day

I've been a customer at the Royal Oak for many years, on occasional visits to East Wittering. It used to be the nicest chippy in the village, but not any more. On a visit in autumn 2013 customer service had become much less polite, but forgetting about this I went there again on Easter Saturday to get a meal for the family. Customer service wasn't any better, and the whole meal tasted stale, and rather unpleasant. But the worst bit, was the meal included a battered sausage which led to a bout of food poisoning, and a night spent vomitting. We determined it was the battered sausage, by a process of elimination of the various things people had eaten. So something's going terribly wrong at the Royal Oak, and I've reported the incident to Chichester District trading standards.

Weve been living here for a long while now and this used to be the best chippy in the whole village. Not so much any more, the portions have shrunk and have also become very very greasy and chrunchy. Also Sometimes having an unusual flavor. While the girls serving are friendly and attentive the manager/cook is rude to everyone and anyone. We wont be rushing back here anytime soon and wont he reccomending it to anyone.

I'm new to the internet. I saw the trip adviser window sticker while in this shop, so thought I'd look them up. I can't believe the negative reviews they've had. I go in every single thursday lunchtime for 2 senior citizens meals and have NEVER had a bad one yet. We prefer Huss which they don't always have but understandably that's because its caught locally and isn't always available so we usually alternate between haddock and cod both of which are always equally good. My husband and I both look forward to getting them and enjoy the mouth watering smell all the way back to Birdham. And it's such good value for money, the perfect amount for us.

Had gone to West Wittering for the afternoon (Sat 22 Feb) with daughter, son in law and grand kids, once we left the beach we decided to have fish and chips and went to Royal Oak in E Wittering (next to Fire Stn) and bought five medium cod & chips. Went and sat in the car in the car park looking at the sea to eat. The food was so poor I took it back to the shop. Batter soggy and very dark looking, no golden batter here, three of the fish were under cooked, very wet and not flaky as cod should be and the chips had a distinct and unusual flavour and were very dark, fish and chips both unedible. The person I spoke to who was i/c frying said it looked OK to him. After further discussion he did refund me £10.

New to these reviews, but just had to tell everyone about this gem, hidden away in Sussex.We have been getting our fish & chips here for some years - we have a caravan nearby. Staff are really friendly, and always helpful. My parents are from Doncaster, so we know our fish & chips.Yes, in the summer months it is very busy, and we sometimes have to queue on a Friday when we arrive, but the smell and great food is well worth the wait. We love the mushy peas as well.We have just got back from a winter visit to check the caravan, and couldn't wait to get our fish & chips. At least this time of the year we didn't have to wait long. We now notice they do cheesey chips - our grandchildren will love these.Thanks again - see you in March.

With a long queue we were expecting something decent. Very small portions and chips were very greasy and the potatoes not very nice tasting. Fish was undercooked and soggy. Won't rush back. Real shame as this could be a real gold mine.

Grumpy unhelpful staff. Small portions and overly greasy. Couldn't finish cod and chips due to the grease but certainly not a normal sized portion
