Excellent food and wonderful service. Went there for a wedding but would come again with my family. Great atmosphere and the Madri beer was nice and cold

We had a fabulous Saturday afternoon party at the Royal Chinese Garden. It's situated in a lovely common, a tranquil location away from all the traffic noise. The food was absolutely fabulous, and the hospitality was top-notch. We had a total of 65 guests, and honestly, everyone left happy at the end. Highly recommended for any occasion.

My wife and I order from The Royal Garden and have also eaten in the restaurant and this is by far the best Chinese restaurant ever. The food is delicious. Well worth a visit.

Although we 3 enjoyed the very nice food (Canton set meal) I think that there is something about the service and atmosphere which leaves room for improvement. Three Tsing Tao beers served up warm (with the excuse that they had come out of the 'wrong' part of the fridge, when a neighbouring table got splendidly chilled beers) and a bottle of warm still water. Capped off by what seems like a 13% service charge added to the bill! Inflation really is rearing its ugly head everywhere!! A bit cheeky if you ask me as the prices are not that cheap!

Tried to order a takeout from the Royal Garden. We got a reply half an hour later saying “We cannot deliver your food. Try somewhere else on Deliveroo.”. There was no apology and no reason. This was a place we used to use a lot but unfortunately the last few years their customer service has really become poor. And even the restaurant states to go somewhere else. With this attitude towards customers this long standing restaurant will go the way of many others in Croydon. We will not be using this restaurant again.

First time there since Covid, food and service was fabulous! Thoroughly enjoyed the evening, bit pricey, but actually worth it.

A dreadful birthday meal for the family. Arrived on time and seated reasonably promptly BUT then left for an hour before a menu arrived, then longer to get a drink. People arriving after us were served and we were totally forgotten even after pointing this out a couple of times. When we finally ordered we waited ages for anything. After complaining yet again, a terrible cocktail was provided as a complementary birthday drink. Then finally all the starters and main course came at once. My food was good, but a curry was sent back as tough, and others in the party were not impressed. To add injury to insult the service charge was added with no apologies Paid and glad to get out of the place. NEVER AGAIN

Booked my birthday meal for 20 people but last minute 5 extra wanted to come. The restaurant accommodated this with no problem. The service was amazing, very polite and welcoming. Food was very nice, came out in good timing. Brought our own birthday cake that staff Brought out to our table singing happy birthday to me. Me and my family was very happy with our experience at Royal garden and will definitely be returning in the future.

We visited the restaurant for a birthday & it was a big disappointment. The service is awful we were served by several staff members some of which are quite rude & arrogant the service charge is a joke considering the service is so bad & there’s no consistency. The food was just ok quite bland definitely needs improvement like the customer service. I would not return or recommend

We went with young child at 1730 but there was a very large group there already. Our table was next to them and as high chair set up, we sat there despite many quieter tables available. The service was from many different staff, one a bit rude I thought. Food was okay but a bit bland. A bit disappointing compared to previous visits, and a rather high service charge added too.

I often come to this restaurant to enjoy the advertised "outdoor cocktail garden" of an evening, perhaps two or three times a month. I've always enjoyed it because of the beautiful surroundings. Like everything else, over the past few months/years the prices at the bar have started to climb, to a point where it is now what I consider quite expensive for a couple of drinks for my friend and I who visit. Regardless, I have continued visiting for an outdoor drink. The last time I visited I went to the bar to order a drink and mentioned that I was just popping to the toilet, which is something I've done multiple times as a "bar customer". I was rudely and abruptly told by a blonde female behind the bar that toilets were for customer use only. When I responded that I was grabbing my drinks after I'd popped to the loo I was told "dining customers only". The real kicker was that even though the restaurant was open, every table in there was completely empty with zero dining customers. Needless to say, I left without getting any drinks and won't be returning. We actually went to a lovely little local pub less than five minutes down the road.

Had a meal which was ok, feels a bit MSG heavy, sweats etc but the biggest feel the £6 + service charge so almost £7 for two small juices for my children is a bit of a rip off

During our walk in Addington Hills today we came across a new pop up coffee place at the Royal Garden. Run by two really enthusiastic coffee lovers, this is a great initiative and the coffee was delicious. Fantastic surprise in the middle of nowhere.

Venue nicely appointed, with mostly round tables and Social Distancing observed correctly, but having read the reviews where a majority were complimentary, we were very disappointed on our first visit1) Place was freezing, had boiler breakdown, but not much done to put in temporary heat2) As it was so cold not helped by all the plates served were also cold3) Had to ask for a finger bowl, which had cold water in!4) The House white wine was of poor quality and at 11% ABV was overpriced at £175) Food was average, but again expensive, and served on cold plates again6) Then to cap it all, having phoned to make sure Gourmet cards were accepted, at check out time, they refused the Gourmet card, saying they were new owners and did not recognize Gourmet cards, in fairness to them, after much discussion, they relented and gave us the 25% reduction dueNeed some food heaters on the table

It was our first time coming to this restaurant, and certainly won’t be the last. The food was lovely and tasty, very generous portion sizes and cooked really well. The price was also very reasonable for what we paid, so we will be back!! The toilets were spotless, all tables socially distanced. I would recommend the house starter-yum!

This restaurant is set in the gtounds of Shirley Hills, worth a meander before or after your meal. Different to the normal chinese meals we normally have. The crispy mutton was really nice and the mango sorbet dessert was so refreshing. Staff were hospitable.

Had one of the best Chinese meals ever. The restaurant has put a social distancing one way plan in place so we felt we were in a safe environment. The service was excellent and the crispy lamb was the best.

We had a great evening. Food was spot on...salt and pepper squid is the best I have ever had and the cocktails were fantastic! We had drinks in the garden first to take advantage of the beautiful location. Staff are attentive and very friendly and the food was delicious. So pleased we found this place and will be back again very soon.

Prebooked online which probably wasn’t necessary although it was fairly busy. Sat in the garden which was lovely although seats were picnic benches. Service excellent and very quick. Food was good. Started getting attacked by mosquitoes as it got later. I would visit again for a special occasion or the eat out to help out offer during August. Beware of the viewing point which was swarming with flying ants.

Food is terrible and not to the standard I expected. It was oily, soggy and the curry was diluted with so much water, it just tasted watery. I expected it to be good but not the case. Such a shame as I had heard nice things about it a long, long time ago.

This is the worst Chinese takeaway I have ever had. Under cooked ribs bland tasting noodles & soggy batter around chicken & prawn balls. Would definitely not recommend. Much better takeaways in the area to try than this one.

Had a delivery because of the lockdown Amazing beef lived up to its name, chow mien was enjoyable though maybe not the best around. Starters pleasant, though mini veg rolls a bit greasy.Given the cost, it’s a toss up between better quality or cheaper price.

This restaurant is wonderful and my family and I had the most excellent time and the food was cooked to perfection. I am aware that the Royal Garden is under new management and that changes and refurbishment are on going and that as a result it now has made great effort to gain a full hygiene classification and is no longer, to my knowledge, in the condition it was when taken over by new management and is awaiting a full five star rating from the inspectors. I would not be put off by bad reviews from certain sectors as if you are you would be missing out on Chinese food at its very best.

Not sure why I have never visited this restaurant before. I guess I was used to going to Tai Tung (Win Yip) but having visited this restaurant two days ago I am now totally hooked. The staff are welcoming, friendly, patient and very attentive. The food is fresh, so tasty and the portions are good. I really could not fault this restaurant even if I tried. I was told that the restaurant had recently been refurbished. It looks lovely and inviting. It’s comfortable and bright and I will definitely be going back with family and friends very soon. This is now my favourite Chinese restaurant in the area!! I am so happy I visited.

Had the pleasure to eat here with my wife last weekend. We made our reservation over the phone a few days before. They were very pleasant and helpful over the phone. Having not been to this restaurant in 20 years. We were curious to see how things are now. We were not disappointed.We arrived on time with a few minutes to spare at 1900hrs. We were greeted warmly and soon seated at our lovely table in the window.Prawn crackers offered on the house.Menus for drinks and food were delivered in short order.Before long drinks were on the table. Properly presented, good level of ice in the drinks, glasses clean and fresh.We ordered wine to go with both starters and main. The white was served nice and cold, ice bucket provided as standard. Red was good temperature. Wine glasses too were spotless and shiny. I do hate paying restaurant prices for good wine and then having stained glasses. Well done..!Unfortunately the mixed Dim Sum  was not available so we made do with another mix of starters. Pork dumplings, spicy soft shell crab, and spicy ribs. All were served promptly, and were hot and tasty. The ribs were deep fired which threw me from the basic Chinese recipe but this did not take away from the taste.For main course we had Ginger fried rice, bamboo shoots with Chinese mushrooms, and a delightful stir fried beef in honey and black pepper sauce. Everything was served hot, fresh and tasty.  All food dishes had a high level of presentation.The cutlery and tableware was all clean and polished. Simple but attractive table set up. Personally  I would have like a little more colour on the tables, either coloured napkins or bright flowers. Felt a little too all over white. Buts that just my opinion.The staff were incredibly friendly, the service overly attentive. Nothing was too much trouble. The whole restaurant was very clean and shiny. Toilets too were very clean.There is plenty of free car parking. No issues with disabled access or facilities.All in all. This was a lovely evening out with my wife. We really enjoyed the food and the restaurant overall. Would return without hesitation.

Went here on Saturday evening with my husband ,sister and brother in law .Our table was booked for 8pm ,on arrival the girl that greeted us ( if that’s what it was ) looked so miserable not a smile all evening from her , she did take our orders for drinks ,and she showed us to our table although half heartedly, she was not one of the Chinese staff .The food was ok , we thought it a bit bland ,I think we were comparing to where we normally go.The lady that was our waitress was extremely nice ,although only brought up enough rice for two (small) portions,when another bowl was brought up it was even smaller than the first ! By 10pm the place was empty, if that was a Saturday evening I can only imagine what a week night would be like.It’s a shame that it’s lacking in atmosphere because we had been to this restaurant years ago , once for my mother’s birthday and another time when my son went travelling for his send off , both times it was busy and lively and the food was nice .

I took my elderly Mum here for dinner last night (she was celebrating her 86th birthday). It was only the two of us so I parked as close to the restaurant as I could and one of the waitresses kindly took my Mum to our table so I could go and park the car. The food was really nice - we had a set menu which was far too much food for us but it was lovely to have all the different flavours to experience. The mixed starters was so nice and I especially enjoyed the crispy duck second course. I very cheekily asked if the food we were unable to eat could be packed up so I could take it home for hubby as he had been working late and would be hungry!! This was done really nicely for me. Service was really good, almost too quick so I did ask if we could have a break between the second course and main. When we left a member of staff sat with my Mum while I got the car and he escorted her out to the car for me. All in all, a really nice experience and I would not hesitate to return.

Good Chinese food. The food was yummy. You have to know what to order. Ample parking but you do need satelite navigation to get to , if you are not a resident in Croydon.

My first impression as we drove through into this restaurant was how beautiful the entrance to this location was - it was like driving through a windy road with green leafed canopy to an opening where there was lots of parking space a beautiful restaurant surrounded by even more greenery. We received a warm welcome and were taken to our table in the lovely and well lit conservatory. Once seated, we were greeted by some more members of staff who took our drinks orders and came back with an ice bucket to keep our rose prosecco chilled and by our table.

The place is under new management and they have really turned the restaurant around!

We have visited this restaurant over many years during which it was the 'go to' Chinese in the area. We were delighted to learn the establishment was under new ownership and having read positive reviews decided to re-visit with a group of friends.

I had visited this place previously under the old ownership and happened to be in the area so thought I would try it again.

I dined here with family and it was a tasty and pleasant experience. I was aware that the restaurant had changed hands and had been a regular under the previous owners, so was wondering what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised. Gone are the worn out chairs, tired tablecloths and cutlery. In are new fittings -love the glass panel (makes the restaurant brighter) and a pleasant, helpful staff. My chicken satay was tweaked with sesame seeds, while the crispy duck was moreish and tasty. All who dined with me enjoyed the experience and the surroundings. The new owners have made some very slight, subtle changes to both the restaurant décor and are making their mark here.

Five of us went on Friday night. First time since the new owners had taken over. We were delighted with the evening. Service excellent, food good, cost very reasonable. It was a delightful evening and we shall be back.

Today I celebrated my birthday and my family took me to The Royal Garden Restaurant at Shirley Hills Croydon. It was the most magnificent setting in beautiful woodland, with massive car parking space and the restaurant was excellent. The food was heavenly and cooked to perfection; there was a very wide range of dishes available and an extensive drinks menu. The staff were lovely, so friendly and helpful, making this special day even more special. To top it all at the end of our delicious meal, I was presented with a pre-arranged surprise birthday cake. The staff even joined in singing happy birthday to me. I would highly recommend this restaurant to everyone, what a great place. Thank you all at Royal Garden, we hope to be regular customers.

Having regularly frequented this Chinese restaurant during the previous ownership we had become less enamoured around 6 months ago but were encouraged to return following recent strong reports. This place was at one time the best Chinese in Croydon so much so that our Dining Club hired the venue for two major dinners of 40+ during the last 10 years.

25 Years ago Croydon and its surrounding areas had a good choice of quality Chinese Restaurants that for some strange reason has dwindled over the years and since the competition has fallen so apparently have the standards.

Both the food and service are fantastic... new owners have made big improvements! Would highly recommend

Visited for dinner with my partner and a friend, as we had been recommended to try their vegan options. Great atmosphere when we entered, and we were greeted and seated straight away. Our waitress Gabby showed us the allergen section of the menu's so that we could see which dishes were suitable for us, and let us know that the chef could make vegan versions of some of the dishes too - A great surprise as it can be hard to find one vegan option let alone almost a whole menu! We spent quite a while deciding what to have as there were so many options, but we were recommended the veggie duck & pancakes as a sharing starter, and we had one of the rice dishes 'vegan-ised' also. The food arrived in good time, hot and fresh and extremely delicious! The veggie duck is amazing and unlike anything we have ever had before. We've never been to an Asian restaurant with such nice vegan options, I can't recommend a visit enough!!

Having been to this restaurant some time ago and found it wanting in every way. It was great to go back and find that it is now under new management, two young men, who are trying to bring it into the 21st century. The first thing we noticed on the Menu was a full and comprehensive list of ALLERGY information, it literally listed the possible allergens in almost every dish.

We visited this restaurant while visiting London for the first time from Texas! The location was beautiful and secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city. There was a beautiful scenic view point near by to allow you to swoon over London's beauty. The new owners were so sweet and accommodating, we felt as though we were in their home. The staff, overall, were all very sweet and happy.Our servers, Rachel and Gabi were excellent at recommendations as well as attentiveness. The vegetarian menu was overwhelming in the best kind of way, I just wish my stomach was bigger to taste EVERYTHING. We ordered several dishes but my favorite was the Vegetarian Aromatic Duck with Plum Sauce. I had never had anything like it and I still dream about it. The Vegetarian Crispy noodles were also delightful. The entire experience was wonderful and this place is top of my list for our next trip back. I have already recommended it to some foodie friends who will be visiting London in the next couple weeks. Thank you Johnny, Jenni, Rachel and Gabi for a truly memorable dining experience.

This cozy restaurant is tucked away just outside London. The staff Rachael and Gabi were great at making recommendations on what to try as well as providing info on dishes. I am a vegetarian and the menus has plenty of options, I can see myself going back just to try all the options! Throughout our dinner Racheal and Gabi checked on us but the new owners even stopped by for a great chat. The bar selection here is great too! After dinner you can take a short walk to see the London skyline. I cant wait to go back to London and eat here again, it was by far the BEST meal of our week long trip!

From the moment we walked into this bright & lovely place we felt welcomed and well cared for. The full bar and seating area at the front was a cozy place to wait for a table since the weather was a bit chilly to stay outside and enjoy the gorgeous garden area. We were greeted by, and regularly checked in on, by the new owners of the restaurant. Their warm & personal touches added to the experience with their knowledgable, attentive & delightful staff. Rachel & Gabi were top notch with service!

This is my second visit , the current owner only in situ a week ago but the kitchen staff remain, and just as well as the food is superb still. Portions are generous and as tasty as any of your good quality Chinese restaurants.

The food here was really really good. Unfortunately we were freezing cold all evening. I think the heating had broken down. There were electric heaters but not sufficient to heat us up. Most of the staff were lovely and friendly but one let them all down. She was pretty miserable but maybe she was having a bad day

I make no apologies for this review, this in my opinion is the worst Chinese restaurant I have ever been to. Let me begin decor is tired plain an badly kept, buckets under air con to catch water drops, service extremely bad, English waiters ? Untrained and scruffy. Food was a poor standard and fatty meat very bad, in fact an insult to the Chinese. The bill was £93 hardly any food no alcohol and items on the bill we never ordered which seems to be a theme at this diner ohh yes diner. I beg u avoid. I eat out alot and this is up there in my worst top 3.

Booked a table for 10 on Saturday night at the last minute and we were quite surprised and then worried at why, if it was any good,there would be a table of that size available. Well, we were pleasantly surprised and had a very good evening We all had the same set menu plus some of us had a soup before our starters. It was friendly service and the restaurant had several other tables in use with groups of people so the atmosphere was very good. Parking easy.

Having seen some recent reviews I was wondering what to expect, not having been to this restaurant for some years. But I enjoyed my set meal with friends, including the ambience (although I have to admit we went on a Sunday evening when they were not at all busy). Reasonably smart. I would have given it 4.5 out of 5 if the facility existed. My friends say they get takeways from there regularly as well - given that they have to drive to get there that implies they like them!

Was looking for somewhere for a bit of lunch, we wanted something different with a bit of flavour and came across this place. The restaurant was really nice and the waitress was lovely and helpful. We were looking at having the lunch set meal at £12.80 and after looking at the main menu we decided to go for the £26 set meal. It was really delicious the Smoked Chicken was the best I've ever had and the beef in black bean sauce was also really good. Lovely big juicy fresh prawns and a lovely light battered lemon chicken, enjoyed everything we ordered. We will defiantly be going back but next time in the evening so we are more hungry and can finish what we have ordered.

We went tonight table for 5. Arrived and ordered a Large Scotch and Coke,was given a glass that was certainly not a LARGE Scotch...When i asked for the bottle/Can or if it was a splash...I was informed by AMY that it was from a can and used as a mixer.. I requested the Can but was informed that they use part of that can as a mixer !!! I then requested a Can of Coke and a glass,which is what in then received.

We spent new year here. It was actually not too busy. I will be honest, I did not think the food was all that, in fact left feeling still hungry. The staff were lovely which made up for the food. With regards to entertainment, they had a singer, not a singer I would have to celebrate New year. I have eat here before and food then was much better, will try again to see if improved.

I’ve been here a number of times although most recently not for a couple of years. I guess it has changed management and has taken a big step backwards. The service is now bad - laughably bad - not so much rude but VERY unprofessional and unwelcoming. For example: waiting staff chewing gum, serving water from plastic measuring jugs.... The food is relatively better but difficult to see how they can justify the price given the service and tired decor.

Been going here for years and it hasn't got worse. The food is really good but if you normally eat at lesser establishments it might not be what you expect.

Food was somewhat decent, cutlery was dirty and the service was appalling absolutely horrible. They brought us so many things that we thought was free but ended up becoming over £30 such as extra chilli and sauce, then had the audacity to put an extra £10 service charge.

We had a lovely meal here last night , I was worried as there had been a few negative reviews on here and we hadn’t been here for a while. But the food was great and the service excellent. Staff were so friendly and helpful. Will be back.

This restaurant is conveniently located with ample car parking space just outside.

It’s a cool place with a panorama view of London in Croydon, open for lunch and dinner 2 serving time daily. Huge parking. What you wish more? Cantonese style cooking and service, I mean more “traditional” and less Red-Chilli spicy adventure. Comfort and elegance just like diners. With cost about £50 a person, you are experiencing a meal fit for a Royal!

Only 3 table's still got order wrong brought out prawns instead of lamb not a lot of difference. Food was tasteless.table service well she came over and stretched right across the table while half of us were still eating. We were a table of 4 not a word of excuse me or even a smile.

The food was amazing the service was fantastic. We were really made to feel at home. When we arrived we were offered drinks before being seated. After ordering our food was served promptly and our wine was always topped up when needed.

Not one to write reviews but was so disappointed with experience of birthday meal for my wife and mother in law felt need to write this. The setting is very special being in Shirley hills and the restaurant itself spacious and pleasant. The food is acceptable, nothing special but ok for the price. HOWEVER the service is absolutely diabolical, very slow, amateur and worst of all totally lacking in any warmth. You really don’t feel welcome. When we left zero acknowledgement. It’s such a nice setting I just hope for a change of ownership so it does not continue to be wasted

Having been to this restaurant before and had an enjoyable meal. My husband and I decided to take our family for a Sunday afternoon lunch. We ordered seven meals four Shanghai meals and three Bejing as there were seven of us. When the food arrived we were quite disappointed at the amount we were given for what we paid. We felt the food was equivalent to about three meals that you get in other Chinese restaurants. We also ordered two bottles’of wine, three Budweisers and four vodka and cokes. The bill when we got it was well overpriced, we will not be going there again.

Went here on a friday night and was given a table right in a corner although there restaurant was less than half full food was bland and not hot my wife could not eat her meal it was so tasteless had to wait 35 minutes just for starters to arrive no atmosphere or ambiance service terrible foo overpriced.
