Royal City Cantonese Restaurant in Kirklees

Food OK. Some good some not quite so but that could be down to personal taste. S&S chicken wasn't very hot. Really please that my friends could choose from lots of GLUTEN FREE options. Management seemed nice & attentive. Waiting staff 50/50 Set price for whatever you want from the menu. Disappointed that crispy duck wasn't available. This is a Chinese after all. Overall would go back again.

Lovely staff and great service. The starters were fantastic but the mains let the experience down a bit. Chicken in satay sauce just tasted like a weak curry, not at all like satay sauce.

I hate to put a poor review but I was deeply saddened by the quality of the food at this restaurant. I was looking forward to have some authentic Cantonese food. My family and I did not enjoy it as we thought we would and left the restaurant hungry as a result of this. I do not recommend this restaurant.

We came last night for my sisters birthday. I was very unsure before arriving due to my daughter having a severe peanut allergy. I was very happy with the care and service we received for this and she experienced her first Chinese in over 6 years. Thank you so much for this. I would 100% recommend you.

When we arrived we were seated at a long table. As we were a group of 7 and wanted to have a conversation, we asked if we could be moved to a circular table. We were told no as it was reserved. We couldn't understand why we couldn't sit at the round table and the other party (who didn't arrive until much later) couldn't sit at the long table. A manager then said that we could sit at the round table. After this initial confusion, our food came, and the majority of it was tasty. The ribs were too sweet and sticky for me, and the soup ordered by one of our group was too salty for her. The restaurant was a little noisy but we ate plenty and the manager was friendly and attentive.

We arranged a meal here for my mum's birthday. The staff were really lovely and accomodating. The food was excellent. Everybody enjoyed it and we all would definitely call again.

Amazing food, wonderful service and a great atmosphere. We went for an 18th birthday meal. I tend to dislike menus because I find them daunting but due to the all you can eat ordering system, I was able to explore different dishes without having to agonize over my choices. Ultimately, it was all great and I loved everything I ate! The staff were also very good at ensuring that plates were cleared when we were finished with them and no sooner (cause that matters if you go to the loo haha) 🙂.

Excellent chinese food and at this price point is of high quality. Staff are really friendly too and always on hand to assist you. I think this is better than any all you can eat buffet.... having it cooked fresh to order. The absolute winner is the vast GLUTEN FREE menu 😍😍 my wife is coeliac and this to her was absolute heaven for food choice. Its very rare for her to be able to enjoy chinese food and she loved every dish. I think tbe addition of crispy duck would sit this restaurant at the top of my list 🦆 We both had a great meal & we will definately be back very soon ❤️

Great little restaurante which I visited in September whilst on holiday from Spain. The good was really lovely and plentiful. and the service excelente. Will definitely be visiting again.

Had a superb experience at the Royal City. The service was excellent. And the choice of food was enough to satisfy all our group. It was a quiet night when we visited so the atmosphere was quite good. We will definitely be returning again in the future.

Went to Royal City with friends as we all fancied Chinese. Food was good and came quick. I know things are going up in price but the buffet is now £19. We didn't over order food when it came to mains either so was quite an expensive evening. Drinks are extortionately priced too, a Soda and Lime was £3!! Will be back...

Over priced now @£19 the food was good but the waiters rude and not knowing what was going on Asked 3 times after we ordered if we wanted to order poor ! Still eating and was asked if we had finished very poor !! Spoke to the manager with not a satisfactory outcome will not be going back soon

Food was very nice and came out hot and quick! The staff were polite and the service was excellent. Would recommend and will be going again. Tip: ask for small portions if you are wanting to try different foods so you aren't leaving much waste (something I was slightly concerned about since reading on the menu that you can be charged for waste)

Really good service and very good food 👌 went at 6.30 on a Friday and the place was already very busy. They do an all you can eat menu but decided to choose off the normal menu. There are some quite steep stairs to get in but my 86 yo dad managed them . Will definitely go back mid week next time when it's not so full.

Had a takeout which is a rare treat for my wife as she is Coeliac and Chinese food can be difficult. The food was good and the prices reasonable and she had no issues health wise so a big thumbs upto Royal City. We order Sweet and Sour Chicken and Crispy Chilli Beef. We certainly recommend especially if you’re seeking gluten free Chinese food. We traveled from Halifax and will return.

To dine was very close to another table not much space! the food was delicious! Expensive per head especially f child under 12yrs, also t stayn no longer than 1hr 30mins not long.

As a group of friends and family, we came to this restaurant for dinner, and it was amazing! The foods were so tasty, we just can't resist re-ordering. This restaurant is having a 'buffet' menu so we can keep re-ordering the dishes and they were cooked freshly for you, provided we don't waste the food - and we didn't obviously! You can tell the dishes were just out from the wok. I love this concept. It is far better than eating the cold or soggy foods sitting on the serving plates of ordinary buffet restaurants. The 'plus' to the food is the service. One mature waiter was very friendly and polite, guided us to the table, told us how to order, recommended many tasty dishes, and was also very efficient in serving food and drinks! In the end, he also made some jokes with us! Another mature waitress was also very professional and efficient. They really gave us a pleasuring visit. The only 'downside' is that we can always see two or three waiters/waitresses doing hard work around but when they were too busy, we found it difficult to get other waiters/waitress attention as most of the time they seems to stay in a corner and chatting between. But they are lovely and polite though when they come to serve. I will come back again surely.

Had a meal for wedding anniversary. Managed to get a table without booking as we went early. We were well greeted and served by friendly staff.

This was our first visit to this restaurant. When we arrived we were shown to our table straight away. It was an eat all you want menus costing £17 a head. It's not a buffet, it's more like Tapas. You order your food, and they cook it fresh to order. Theres plenty to choose from on the menu. sharing between we sampled most of the dishes available befor we were too full to eat any more. All the dishes we had were well cooked and tasted very good. All the dishes were served in good time, the serving staff being polite and attentive. It was a Saturday evening and the place was full and quite noisy there being being a couple of large birthday parties taking place. The dacor is a bit basic but clean. Would we go back. Yes but probably a night during the week when it might be less noisy.

Great portion sizes food was great staff was friendly. Enjoys will definitely come back had the all you can eat buffet.

Food is amazing, always fresh and piping hot. Staff are all really nice and friendly. Drink prices are reasonable. The eat-in price has crept up since covid and it’s quite expensive now so can’t visit as often.

We hadn’t been for a long time, but thought to give our local restaurant another go. £17 for all you can eat, starters & mains. Food is cooked fresh to order & as much as you like. Enjoyed all our choices. Wines etc reasonably priced. Service very good also Well worth a visit, will definitely go again

Great service, love the decor, great buffet fast food

We love this restaurant, it is a long time favourite of my family. The staff and owners work so very hard, to provide excellent service and superb quality food too. The BBQ spare ribs are legend in our family, we simply love them. The all you can eat menu is brilliant good value for money, sometimes we add something specific off menu and the staff efficiently and quickly serve it. The food is consistent and all good quality. It is not good for people with mobility problems as it is on the first floor - but well worth trying to get there.

Its deffo gone down hill, staff members can be a bit stand offish. Dont know if its a language barrier

Having recently moved to the area we set about trying the local Chinese restaurants & takeaways to find one that we really enjoy and most recently tried Royal City. The food is superb, the meat is good quality, the sauces are lovely, when you eat in the restaurant the food comes out fast and is very fresh. The service is very good. We have definitely found our regular Chinese restaurant & takeaway.

Visited this restaurant for the first time with my 2 children. The food and service was excellent and good value for money. Highly recommend.

I've been going to Royal City for years... haven't done a review for a long time. This place is fantastic. A family run place ... incredibly lovely staff..fab food..very clean and tidy. Perfect small hidden gem of a Chinese all you can eat good portions too . High quality food at a fair price be aware that its a finish your plate fully or we don't continue to serve you place but that been said it's so nice you will fantastic place highly recommended

All you can eat menu for £17 is excellent value. All food freshly cooked as ordered and served hot till you finish and wish to order another dish. All food served quickly and bar. Also A la Carte if you don’t want the £17 all you can eat.

Delicious food for a reasonable price !!

It's the first time we tried. The food was good, tasty. We (2 persons ) ordered Buffet - starters, soup were so good. Main meal with varieties. Suggestions; for Buffet, it would be good if meal with small/medium portion that will allow customers to try other meal menus as well. Because the main dish portion was big for one person, it could not be finished, end up with food waste. We ordered 3 main + noodles + fried rice, it's full already. For healthy eating, please reduce the amount of salt. It's a lovely meal, we will come back again!

I will say I have always gone for the all you can eat and it as never disappointed me. The staff are alway accommodating and friendly, but be warned it gets busy.

Had high hopes due to the reviews. Unfortunately we had a bad experience. The food was very bog standard i.e. anglo-Chinese, not genuine. The price very high, at £17 per head, for a buffet of boring food. Minimal choices, just different meats with the same sauce, plus a small choice of veggie options. Sorry to say, I'll skip this place in future.

Do not come to this Chinese , unless you want the week off work, I went yesterday had 3 plates and started to feel funny, didn’t take much notice until I got home and threw up all over my carpets , and all day today ( Sunday 29th may ) I haven’t left the bathroom , been stuck on the toilet ? & I will never ever go back here again! This place needs to be shut down, I have food poisoning from either the chicken or the prawns! avoid this restaurant at all costs

This is our family restaurant for all social occasions. Definitely cheap and cheerful NOT cheap and nasty..Child friendly with a casual dress code I can't recommend it highly enough.

Starter very nice i ordered house special chow mein it was awful it looked like it was covered in a jellylike substance totally unappealing and their prices have gone up quite a bit sorry but i wont be patronising again.

Royal City - A cosy restaurant Royal city is located above two commercial shops, the venue isn't wheelchair friendly. Upstairs is a quaint "traditional" chinese restaurant feel, whereby it feels like it was last decorated in the 90's (personally i like that style, its refreshing) The restaurant however was fairly cold, we had to keep our coats on. There are small radiators dotted about but its not sufficient to heat the whole open plan upstairs. If the restaurant was full perhaps the collective body heat would suffice. The service was good, the staff are nice and attentive, however the restaurant wasn't too busy The food was okay, it feels worthy of 3 star but nothing more. Ingredients wise i've had more succulent ribs with more meat in the bone elsewhere. The crispy beef was just crisp The mushroom dish could be prepared better with button or chestnut mushrooms as the garlic sauce was good, but a basic cheap mushroom was used and sort of sloped together. Neither of us like the prawns that used, they just had a very very cheap taste and we couldn't finish those dishes. I wouldnt order any prawn dish again The savoury was okay, but also thin on the fillness level. Ive had more filled spring rolls from iceland! It would be good if they did their own large/medium sized spring rolls with varied fillings to stand out from the rest If you're after a standard chinese buffet this place wont let you down, it'll be what you want and expect

Very disappointed. After hearing so many good reviews we thought we would give it ago, Food was very dry and tasteless. Very over priced Staff just stand there leaning on the wall talking to each other and not paying attention to customers. They do not have a desert menu. And there food menu is very limited Definitely not worth it

Went last night for mothers day . One rude waiter . Food was vile unless u like it served in some kind of jelly s..t .The chicken and sweetcorn soup was so think u could hang wallpaper with it all the corn and chicken seemed to be blended in to it.. the chicken chow main had a wobble too it. Lol honestly wtf is the jelly ’s…t? Just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean u can serve us s..t. BRING BACK THE MANDERIN…….

The menu was £17per head eat what you want. Not a buffet, you order the food and it is cooked and brought out to you, and it was all very tasty. Friendly and attentive staff too.

Had another good meal here with all my children & their partners, including our 2 year old granddaughter. She loved the prawn crackers. For the price it is great value for money & we all eat quite a lot. Never been dissatisfied with the quality here & love the fact you can eat whatever you like as many times as you like. Staff always cheerful & polite. We will be back again & again.

Lovely place. Food was brilliant and all went. Felt bar bill was quite steep considering out of 11 drinks, six were soft drinks. However this will not stop us going again. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Good portion sizes, hot qnd food arrived quickly after ordering. From start (booking a week before) until we walked out tonight, it was a great experience.

I’m a regular at royal city,I never normally have a issue,but today there was a issue I had to attend so I asked to take the rest of the food that was on my plate home they said no I offered them money they said no… I paid £14:80 for a starter and wouldn’t let me take the rest of my food home?

Been here a few times before but this time very disappointing, £14.80 adult and £8.00 kids, prawn toast very greasy ribs were nice, beef chow mein poor, sauce was sickly and beef was very fatty not even like meat, even the parts that were beef...

Staff were absolutely wonderful here! I'm personally not a big fan of the changes to buffets, however I understand that they have to work like how the are now due to current restrictions. Past this issue, the staff happened to be very helpful and friendly at this venue and treated my group like family at the time of arrival. Food was a little bit hit or miss, but overall it was very enjoyable.

Had a very tasty enjoyable experience at this Chinese buffet. You do order items to be brought to your table rather than self serve but at least things are cooked fresh - and there's no limit really. Last night, 21st Aug 21, was my First and Last time visiting this restaurant. We booked for 10 people to celebrate my mums Birthday but had a very bad experience. When we got there the staff looked at us in a funny way and were whispering to each other, we were rushed and were told they'll need the table back in an hour because we arrived 10mins late. The staff were ok but there was one particular very rude and unprofessional Chinese lady there who made it obvious that we weren't welcome there, was a horrible experience. She kept staring at our table during our entire visit, was very uncomfortable. After 30mins the staff came and whispered in my ear that they are bringing the cake because they need the table back and I said OK. I then requested for plates to share the cake and the Chinese lady gave us 2 small plates instead of 10. We were 10 in total at the table and anytime we ordered our food we were served 1 portion to share and it's meant to be a buffet. Never ever again am I visiting this restaurant. We spent £118 and left the place hungry. Was a very Bad and Horrific Experience for me and my family.

Very good all you can eat buffet, brought to the table. £14.90 per person. Food was good and freshly cooked, unlike some buffets where the food is sitting in hotplates stewing. Staff are very friendly and helpful.
