Rose and Crown in East Hampshire

Thank you to Charlotte and her team for allowing the Farringdon Garden Club use one of the restaurant rooms for a village event. The event attracted over 24 people, and the restaurant staff was absolutely fabulous on the day, very attentive. Our designated room was beautifully set up. The ambience in the Rose and Crown was fabulous. Nothing was too much trouble for the restaurant staff. Sincere thank you to Charlotte and her team for allowing the Farringdon guests to participate in the event.

This delightful gem is a must for all. Tucked away in the village of Farringdon is this beautiful quaint village pub full of charm. Superb service. Extremely friendly staff, excellent food and good choice of drinks and Ales.

Lovely meal on a Friday evening. Good atmosphere and great service, attentive and personable from the staff who amended menu choices at our request. I had catch of the day, sea bass that was tasty if a little steep at £22.95 for one fillet that came up on the small side. Lady on the table next to me had the same and hers was bigger so luck of the draw I think. The ribs looked great, chicken burger was HUGE. Mushrooms on toast and prawn starter also really flavoursome and heavy on the garlic which I love. Felt like a quintessential British village pub. Would recommend.

Really disappointing. 20 of us there last night for a work do and I’m so sad to say the food was really poor, I was so embarrassed after always telling everyone how great the food is here, but it wasn’t good. I had a vegan burger which was totally dry in a gluten free bun (no vegan cheese or onions as it said it came with). My chocolate brownie dessert was so salty I couldn’t eat it, gutted! Was looking forward to that, and it smelled amazing. Chatted to colleagues this morning, all of those who had the risotto said it was grim (and the menu said it came with ‘the greenest of vegetables’, it had 3 little kale leaves on top!) and the boss had the ribs which he said were mediocre. This used to be our ‘go to place’ for food :-(

I visited the area to catch up with a friend over Sunday roast. I’m not one to blow anyone’s trumpet over a sunder roast, but I just can’t not this time round. I ordered the pork and my friend had the nut roast. The pork literally melted on my tongue, the roast spuds were crunchy on the outside whilst the fluffiest of fluffy on the inside. Homemade Yorkshire pudding and seriously tasty gravy. Literally the BEST roast I’ve ever had in my life. Literally don’t want to post this review and keep the best roast venue a secret 🤫

A real gem of a pub, hidden away in Upper Farringdon there is a friendly village pub that serves amazing food and is worth the journey to visit.

The pub has recently been taken over by new management sadly I didn’t visit the pub under the old management .the pub is tastefully decorated in side and the staff are helpful and friendly. I booked table for a Sunday evening @ 18.00 the food was nice although a little rushed, as soon as i had put my fork on the plate i assume the manger told one of the staff,,, THERE DONE ,, and our plates was cleared from the table in a flash, podding menu was then placed on the table, personally i like to take my time when eating and have some time between courses. I will probably give it six or seven months and go back to see if it’s changed.. final score 7 out 10

What a great little place! A really homely feel to this pub and a very warm welcome from all the staff. Attentive, polite and accommodating! We both had the Sunday lunch as an option for dinner and wow!! Both the pork belly and the roast beef were to die for! We will definitely be returning soon, what a little gem!!!

Visiting the area and on recommendation booked for Sunday Lunch. Quite possibly the best we have ever had. Melt in the mouth belly pork with delicious cracking, parsnips and honey, glazed carrots, buttery cabbage perfectly cooked toasties and homemade enormous Yorkshire puddings. Highly recommended my only regret is I don't live locally so won't be able to visit again any time soon. 😊

Lovely lovely place, pork ribs are amazing!

We went before it changed hands and everything was very good so we went back on Saturday and was told it had just changed owners with a new menu. Well we thought very poor the chicken portion was very small ,the spare ribs was a good portion but very dry hardly any sauce, the mussels were tasteless and not that many 12 for a main dish more rice and sauce than mussels . Burger was better. Starters were better the two Irish coffees had hardly any cream on them.total bill was £186 in that £20 service charge which we would have left a tip but not £20. Very disappointed .

Nice food, more veg needed than 2 x chantoray carrots on the roast in my opinion but went back randomly for chips week later and dammmmm they are good!

First visit for a couple of years. Very welcoming, excellent food & service. Only blackmark is the introduction of a 12.5% service charge by default. Both my friend & I do not agree with this practice & will politely ask for this to be not taken, which we trust will be done pleasantly. For good service & food / drink. We frequently tip more than that anyway. Watch this space.

A lovely lunch in beautiful surroundings with friendly welcoming service. One of our favourite places to eat. One of us is gluten free and there is a really good choice of options. Food is always delicious all year round.

I have visited the pub for meals often in the last two years, and the food, atmosphere and service are very good. However I like to give tips at my own discretion, and I notice that recently a 12.5%compulsory service charge has been imposed. I will be visiting much less frequently as a result.

I now live in the USA, but I grew up in Farringdon and have seen many owners of this pub come and go over the years. I have fond memories of sitting with my parents and siblings, sipping lemonade and eating cheese & onion crisps in the pub garden every summer. Each landlord has brought their own distinct flair to The Rose & Crown--the pub has always been a steady, consistent village staple. The current owners seem very welcoming and friendly, and have introduced regular special events that I don't think existed before to create community and belonging--quiz nights, Gin Wednesdays, a themed New Year's Eve event, etc. Sadly, I didn't manage to eat here during my short stay--they were closed for a private party on the one night I tried to have dinner there. Wish I'd been able to--the dining room was full every time I was there, and the food looked and smelled delicious. But my family went several times over the holidays for drinks, and it was everything a village pub should be--cozy and welcoming, with good beer and friendly staff. The music was a little loud the first time we went, but other than that, everything was great.

Had a really good night thanks to the staff. We had a group of 14. Ordering individually in advance was easy, service excellent and food very good. Definitely recommend

My family and I booked tickets for the Rose & Crown's New Years Eve bash, and I have to say we were so pleased that we did. Charlotte and the team put on a sensational evening - the food was amazing, the ambience was great, the Beatles tribute band was a triumph. But the evening was made so great by the staff - Charlotte and her team were super friendly, efficient & welcoming. Congratulations on a brilliant evening!

Great food and service for our family Christmas get-together. There was a good choice on the menu and there was a great atmosphere, as it was fairly full of groups gathering over the Christmas holidays.

First time for over a year since we had last visited. Overall an excellent meal with good portions. Roast potatoes in particular were superb. Only weak point was the pepperiness of the Beetroot Wellington. Overall good service though first course a while in coming but...

A return visit to spend the voucher that we were given after our previous less-than-perfect visit. All was well this time. Service was friendly and brisk despite the dining room being full, and the food was excellent. Delicious Cullen Skink pie!!!

Super friendly host and service team, great local beers on tap. Food portions very disappointing and quality not particularly great considering the price. We eat at a fair few pubs in the area and the food here last night didn’t rate that highly compared other pubs or indeed to the meals we had here last year.

Nice comfortable pub restaurant with a good variety on the menus. There is plenty of outside space in the beer garden and patio area if the weather permits.

Very cosy comforting country pub. Lovely staff, warm welcome and dog friendly. Had an excellent chicken schnitzel on their midweek menu. Was absolutely brilliant, with a fab mushroom sauce, chips and salad. Definitely come here again!

A lovely pub in Chawton. With its own dedicated gluten free menu. I had the mushroom pie, it was really delicious followed by a very tasty gluten free brownie. The service was excellent but I'm only giving 3 stars because staff failed to tell us of the Friday night special that if you buy two mains you can get a bottle of wine for free. We only found out at the end of the meal when seeing it on the back of a card on our table. As we were leaving they did not agree to give us the bottle of wine that was rightfully ours. Quite annoying! Other than that it was a lovely evening out with a friend.

We visited today with our family including a 6 day old baby. The staff were so friendly and welcoming. The food was amazing and the atmosphere was great.

I have to eat dairy free, so I had a vegan sweet potato and spinach pie from the Rose and crown and it was to die for! Service was fast and helpful.

This place just scrapes into 4/5. Lovely venue, accommodating polite and friendly service, with a good selection of beverages. But for the cost the food could be better. Portion sizes are fine, but pasta wasn’t fresh, sauce slightly greasy and the falafel was dry.

Ended up walking from Chawton to upper Farringdon. Happened upon this pub and what a find. It was so welcoming from its beautiful decor and bar staff. I ended up having lunch there (2x starters - soup and a goats cheese tart) which was delicious. Being midweek, there were people but not full. I can imagine it must be very busy on a weekend so you possible need to book if you want to eat. I highly recommend it

Great selection, well cooked and well priced.

The restaurant area was quite cold even the staff were shivering, however the food and service was fantastic. There was a bit of a mix up with the bill which my daughter secretly paid only for the staff to take a second payment from husband, good job we noticed. A refund was put through...but it makes you wonder.

Lovely decor and cosy atmosphere. Limited choices for vegetarians so I did have to have a little pick and mix with starters and light bites. Food presented nicely and overall good quality. Would be good to have a drinks menu for the restaurant which isn’t just wine! Overall nice pub👍

We had an excellent experience of this pub. Due to terrible traffic we were over an hour and a half late for our booking but they held our table and we're so nice about it. The food was delicious and it was such a relief to have so many gluten free options for our daughter. The whole experience was cosy and inviting. Definitely recommend.

What a find. We went because we had Dot the dawg with us. We took a chance as we had not booked (for dinner) - and the staff and Manager were ever so accommodating. The food was wonderful, the atmosphere spot on and the locals (and their dogs) a cheerful and welcoming bunch. Hello esp. To Winston the border terrier- what a character!!!

So lovely to return to this lovely pub...Now a red mist restaurant,but still as good..Service and food was scrummy...and all enjoyed with a peach and rose gin and fevertree tonic..at a very good price due to gin Wednesday !!! All covid restrictions were in place..and we felt very safe..well done..We have booked our return visit..

Away for a week and this was the local in a very quaint village. Well organised due to covid with standard pub food which was just what we needed. Only disappointment was the plaice which had a little too much butter

Had an excellent lunch yesterday at the Rose and Crown. This was my first indoor outing since lockdown allowed and the pub felt safe and clean. The staff was attentive and respectful of distancing where possible. The food was great with an interesting Specials board. The atmosphere was nice as it was buzzing with lunch guests on this wet and windy Friday.

Very friendly and efficient staff. The menu choices were good and the food was excellent. Another lovely pub included in the Red Mist Group. Highly recommended.

This brilliant village pub hosted the reception for our family wedding a few weeks ago. We knew already how good it is, but the service and food they laid on for us was quite amazing! The recent extension worked perfectly for our Covid-reduced party of 15. The staff could not have been more accommodating, especially in the restricted circumstances, allowing us to celebrate the event to the max!A big 'thank you' to all the staff for all they did!

This was the last few days before the ‘second lockdown’...! It was great to find a little country pub that was really well prepared for ‘safe drinking’.We were guided in through clear, COVID alert signs and were able to find a comfortable place to sit and were well attended to by really pleasant, capable bar staff. We enjoyed a couple of drinks each (excellent choice of real ales) and were on our way refreshed and reassured that the idyllic country pub still exists.....

Visited here on Friday, food was amazing. Liked it so much we brought friends back on the Saturday. Exceeded expectations. If no lockdown, we'll be back next weekend. Great place and dog friendly.

Food was lovely and very well presented, just needed more veg or salad and more choices (only 4 available). Also, lady made us feel like we should tip (should be optional).

We had a really special family dinner here. The food was delicious and the portions were so generous. I had the pie which was divine.. the pastry was spot on. The atmosphere was so cosy, the furnishings were gorgeous and it is just such a beautiful pub inside and out. It was lovely looking out over the garden at all the fairy lights outside. Everything felt very safe Covid-wise, with staff being very careful and everything so clean. A wonderful evening and we can’t wait to return.

We sat in the attractive restaurant area overlooking the beautifully lit garden . I enjoyed a bowl of seasonal soup , risotto and ice cream . Others in the family thought the pastry of the meat pie incredibly delicious and the portions were excellent . The staff looked after us with efficiency and couldn’t have done more to make us welcome . We will be back .

Second visit in two months during COVID Rules, this time my wife’s birthday. Once again a very friendly welcome and well looked after by their charming staff. Excellent cuisine from the varied menu, enjoying all three course. Kindly decorated my wife’s dessert for the occasion accompanied by a choral rendition. The Rose & Crown is performing well during this tricky time.

The Rose and Crown never disappoints. Lovely staff, lovely food and a truly stunning sunny garden, looking over the rolling hills of the beautiful Hampshire country side.Strict Covid-19 rules in place. The traditional fish and chips are delicious. We strongly recommend them. How lucky we are to have this as our local pub.

Visited tonight with a couple of girlfriends. Fabulous welcome, exquisite food. Highly recommend the garlic prawn starter, Chicken in Whiskey sauce with kale & sautés potatoes. Rich mushroom cream sauce and tender chicken. Delicious.Friendly, courteous staff, nothing too much trouble. Log fire, candles simply wonderful relaxing evening out.

We live in Alton & walked over to Farringdon for Sunday lunch at The Rose and Crown : what a lovely day a very chilled walk across and then a trio of roasts which were nothing short of superb. Fresh tasty veg, succulent meat, Yorkshire puds and lovely gravy! Followed up by some s rummy brownie & sticky toffee pud!! Only request would be to explore a couple of extra Gluten Free options as Eaton Mess or Ice cream can be a bit repetitive! That aside super food, lovely service and we will defo be back!!

Have eaten here many times, but the Rose & Crown has lost the magic touch.Poor menu, no Pork, no Lamb, no Duck. One Steak. The starters were poor. I sought salvation in the specials as was further disappointed as the only special was Fish & Chips, which subsequently I heard many people complaining about. And the management having to take off the bill.Overall very poor and a down right boring menu priced quite high.Things need to improve a lot to regain the fabulous menu and service they used to offer.

We visited the rose and crown on the recommendation of a friend and we are so glad we did! The meal was good and the service was exceptional. It's a really nice and friendly village pub!! We will definitely return.

This is a friendly village pub with a good size garden. When sitting outside you are offered a blanket to help keep you warm. There is a good choice of food on the menu. The Whiskey Chicken in mushroom sauce was delicious. Some in our group felt the vegetables needed more cooking as they were extremely hard.

I think the place must have changed hands. Staff were pleasant but we were not looked after. The food looked lovely but very tired. My sea bass was as dry as a biscuit. We would have told the waitress had she asked. My plate was taken back with almost the same amount on it as when it came out...We were abandoned once we declined the dessert menu...
