Rose and Crown in Uttlesford

Quite busy when I arrived. Took the Indian meat Thali takeaway. I was told the goat curry was burnt so gave more of the other meat curry which was chicken. The packaging was smelling burnt while driving back. When opened the package it turned out there was no extra chicken curry but another veg option which was the chickpeas with banana slices. Awful. It was actually tasting burnt. So we had 2 boxes of burnt tasting vef curry already in the bin. Then onto the chicken curry with the Trinidadian twist, again tasteless. Srilankan daal was average tasting. The paratha was dry and rubbery.The salad had no seasoning and the raita was just yoghurt with diced cucumber and chopped mint. Again not much taste to it. Overall very very disappointing. When I was there ordering I could see they were very busy and these things do happen but after waiting 30 mins and be served below par food is totally unacceptable. Its a good attempt and the Thali menu looked great but shame it couldn't be cooked that way. Please don't serve it!! I wish you good luck.

We chose this pub by location as after a long bike ride we wanted some good food and easy ride back to the station. It soon became apparent that we were in for a treat. The service we received from the moment we arrived was a cut above a country pub, all the food was excellent, a great selection of quality wines and it was incredibly good value for money. Can't wait for our next visit - thank you Stacy you run a fabulous establishment!

Went here Saturday night for dinner, had spam fritters for starters was lovely ! Lovely set up main lady seems to work so hard but girls were rude when hubby lit up cigarette one shouted at him!We paid and the same girl asked “Do you want change?” So I said yes please and she smirked making us feel so uncomfortable. Then came back with a pounds worth of small change! We would’ve tipped well had she have not been rude. Won’t come back again

We were greeted warmly on arrival. Very friendly staff and great service. Traditional menu. Excellent quality produce and very well cooked and presented. Generous portions. Well kept beer and way above average wines for a pub. Food and drinks all very reasonably priced. Our cycling group from north London will certainly be calling again to visit Stacey and the team. Highly recommended.

It's got a fantastic new beer garden that we just had to come and see. Really great food, excellent service and the best beer in Stansted. We had a really fun time. Thank you!

Excellent pub, great home made Sunday lunch, good selection of real ales and wines, pleasant pub garden, landlady and staff helpful and friendly ( and for other cyclists - it's downhill to the station). Will return.

Stopped for a few beers here. Met the landlady Stacy she was very friendly. I didn't eat but the food coming out the kitchen looked great. They have adapted really well to the new covid rules lots heated outdoor seating and the table service was great. Thanks I'll be back.

So a pre booked Christmas meal on Xmas day. Starters was a plate of hot strong cheese with warm bread very nice my main options was traditional Turkey roast. Meat was plentiful and nice however the meal was let down by an abudunace of uncooked vegetables. There was no bread sauce no cranberry and no pigs in blanket. Xmas pudding was a small co op sthle dessert for one with custard. I expected much better for 70 pounds per head no drinks included left disappointed.

Faultless first time visit to this great family pub. Made to feel very welcome by staff and felt very safe.Lovely warm fire and a superb selection of drinks, especially ales. Food was exceptional and large portion!Huge thanks to the staff and hope to see you again for our meet up. Stay safe!

We went here on a wim. Have got to say I am fussy when it comes to a nice roast. This roast was the best roast I have ever eaten in any pub/restaurant. The owner Stacey and her young helper Holly made the best roast potatoes I’ve ever eaten. Very friendly atmosphere and very reasonable prices. Can’t wait to go back.

Visited this little Gem of a pub last Sunday. Service was superb, the food was even better. I have never enjoyed a Sunday roast as much as I did. All homemade, hot and tasty, I will definitely be back again very soon.

Always wanted to try this place for Sunday lunch. Went at the last minute with a friend. Dinners were huge, lots of veg, and roast potatoes incredibly crunchy. Will definitely be back ! 5 stars

We have rarely enjoyed a Sunday Roast more than the Rose and Crown's. The welcome was warm and friendly and we were treated as old customers even though we'd never been there before. The choice was reassuringly limited meaning that everything was freshly cooked. My roast beef, cooked exactly as I'd asked for it, was tender and melt-in-the-mouth (it also covered half a large plate). The Yorkshire Pudding - just right (I'm from Yorks so should know) and the range of veg outstanding; crisp roast potatoes, separate dishes of steamed cabbage and carrots, creamed leeks and gravy. Service was so attentive without being obtrusive and the whole experience was like having a great meal at a favourite aunts.

The Rose and Crown is, overall a good pub. We hired the private function room for a a large family gathering a few years ago (with 2 dogs) and generally, our experience was satisfactory. However the menu (I felt) was very limited. Also, the door handle leading to the little area at the back of the room was very stiff (it took me about 2 minutes to work out how to open it). However the staff were friendly and efficient, and generally the experience was good.

We picked up an amazing takeaway roast dinner during the quarantine one sunday and the fish and chips on a friday night. Excellent portions and quality. Would definitely order again.

I was invited to Christmas Dinner with Stacey, her family and friends. Some I knew others were new to me. The dinner was cooked by her son and chef Charlie and was fantastic. The atmostphere was great and I left feeling very happy and contented and made a few new friends. I had been dreading this xmas as it was the first without my Husband who died the xmas before but i should not have worried. Its a lovely village pub brimming with love and friendly atmosphere. Dont just take my word for it go there.

Popped in for lunch and thoroughly enjoyed it.My husband had whitebait and ribs and I had the shepherds pie, homemade and all served piping hot.The food was delicious and the service genuinely warm and friendly, nothing was too much trouble for the owner and we enjoyed a chat with her.Lovely atmosphere inside and the log burner is wonderful.We will definitely be returning to try more dishes off the menu.

Came here to have a meal the night before we were going on our holiday. Ordered the Turkey curry, was really looking forward to it but we had to send it back as it was mostly just warm and cold in the middle when it came back it was a bit hotter but absolutely no flavour to it hense we didn't eat it. The place had some staffing issues and admittedly the landlady stepped in on her day off to cover to her credit but unfortunately she had been drinking during the day and was decidedly drunk!!! She made sure all the customers were aware that it was her day off and kept apologising for being drunk but she was to loud about it and swearing all the time. She even argued with a young lad there about his tab and every one there could hear what she had to say. We felt totally uncomfortable for the whole time we were there.The evening cost us about £86.00 for 4 of us with a drink what a waste of money and not a great start to our holiday! Called at 1140 on a Sunday lunchtime and surprisingly got a table for 1430. Small menu with about ten meals at about £15 each. Attentive staff working at speed with full tables. Quick service and generous portions. Nice touches were the cranberry sauce in a small kilner jar and the vegetables in separate dishes helping to keep them warm. We were evening a small tea towel to avoid burning ourselves on the containers. The food was lovely, especially the turkey, red cabbage and roast potatoes. Worth a visit, but do book.

Great meal after an hour or so walking in the countryside. They served a delicious roast with all the trimmings.

Lovely friendly pub with great food. Not posh, but delicious grub. We visited for a Friday lunch. Three of us had the turkey and ham pie which was delicious - like proper home cooked food, the fourth had haddock and chips - also delicious. We then had three portions of banoffee pie and cream, that slipped down a treat, and a wickedly delicious chocolate bread and butter pudding with custard. Coffee was slow to arrive but well made. The staff were all really friendly and could not do enough for us. We will be returning!

I’d read good things about this traditional, unpretentious country pub before I booked and I wasn’t disappointed. We were made to feel welcome throughout and the service was friendly, efficient and un-rushed. The food was all well-cooked and tasted home-made. Portions were generous, not excessive, and reasonably-priced. We enjoyed a comfortable lunch in pleasant surroundings and will return.

Lovely pub, friendly staff and wonderful food. The only thing we felt let the pud down in the height of summer was the tired garden with garden furniture which was in desperate need of done TLC. Would definitely recommend this pub for food and service.

Let down last minute by another pub restaurant in the area, it looked like our family reunion was about to go down the pan. However, The Rose and Crown came to the rescue and fitted all 8 of us in with very short notice. The food was typical pub grub but a good menu, well cooked and good size portions. Very happy with our meal here.

What a lovely meal we had last night at the Rose and Crown. The Goats cheese salad was absolutely beautiful, the tapas was fantastic and the burger was spot on. Great atmosphere and the IPA was very tasty. The staff were very attentive and efficient.

Met our hungry family members from their flight and for the first time went for a meal in The Rose & Crown. Went into the bar area next to a well laid out restaurant area. Chose from the Bar Meal Menu, traditional meals served by a very attentive bar person. Meals served throughout the day. Would certainly use again, a picturesque oasis in a nearby airport environment.

Met up with friends from Norfolk so we meet up halfway which is Stansted.

Excellent lunch food really good and customer service excellent. Good choice for roasts and veg great.

As newbies to Stansted Mountfitchet we chose the Rose and Crown, situated on the western edge of the the Town, from the Trip Advisor recommendations list. What a charming, attractive Pub with very friendly, very welcoming staff and a most generous helping of the superb Sunday Roast. We will definitely eat there again.

Wow this is probably owned by the most hostile owner we've ever met. Doesnt let you finish sentences very miserable and ubrupt I'd worry about my food if that was only their manner !

I’ve been here a few times- lunch , dinner and roasts. Each time I’ve been impressed. Meats are good and veggies always fresh.

we called in on a sunday evening hoping to get food but they had stopped serving. we decided to stay for a drink and the staff were so lovely, friendly and the atmosphere was so positive we decided to stay and a have a few. This is in all the best senses a family community pub which made you feel welcome- a rare experience these days. We will go back and try the food when we visit later in the year

Fantastic service, very friendly, excellent food, great atmosphere, certainly ticked all the boxes!! Visited with my partner, mum, daughter, grandson and our dog. Food was great, they also catered for gluten intolerance so mum very happy!

We were staying in Stortford for the weekend, so decided to try The Rose and Crown on the strength of the superb reviews on Trip Advisor. We were not disappointed! The place has the feel of a proper pub (rare these days), and the staff are very welcoming. The menu consisted of choices of turkey, lamb, beef or pork for roast dinner plus a nut roast for veggies. I chose roast pork, which was a bit of a risk as I live in Norfolk where pork is always beautiful, but I need not have worried. The pork was tender and still moist with excellent crackling. Lovely veg, roast potatoes and a huge Yorkshire pudding, plus lashings of gravy - what’s not to like. My co diners had lamb and turkey and both agreed it was excellent. The pub is also dog friendly. Another bonus. If we revisit the area, we will definitely return.

Travelled down from Lincolnshire to meet family in Essex halfway for my 50th Birthday.

Came for lunch with a friend having had a poor experience nearby. 100percent recognition of gluten free, not only by leaving out the obvious, but even to the extent of pointing out that there was Worcestershire sauce which may contain gluten. Very impressive. Beautiful welcome, excellent service and attention to detail. We will be back.

Had a very nice and warming welcome from the landlady who was very helpful and very friendly. Great food and very good portions. The battered haddock was divine and all of our 8 dishes came out of the kitchen within 2 minutes! Very impressed!

The Rose & Crown is listed on a local dog-friendly FB group, so we went for lunch with a friend & our dog & so happy that we did.

I went to The Rose And Crown with a few family friends for some simple pub grub and that's what we got. The staff were nice. Very nice way to end the weekend.

We dinned here evening before our flight and there is a welcoming atmosphere and a great choice on the menu. We had the steak and ale pie and crumble for sweat, which was perfect comfort food. The Ghost Ship beer was well kept too.

A big group of us went for Sunday lunch today and had a great afternoon. We had the “green room” which was perfect for quite a loud gathering! The roasts were well cooked and generous portions. Those who didn’t have roasts also enjoyed their meals. The service was great and we felt well looked after. Would recommend.

My husband and I decided to go out for dinner quite late on a Saturday evening. I called the pub and they were able to accommodate our late booking. On the phone the lady said that as they’d been busy some of their dishes were unavailable but was more than happy to read the remaining options to us and we were happy with the remaining choice.

Wonderful pub with great food! They were very lovely and accomodating when we experienced some difficulties getting some of our party to find the right location. Sunday lunch, drinks and dessert were all very tasty and the pub was very comfortable with a great atmosphere. Hats off to the wonderful staff who were great even though they were rushed off their feet!

Great welcome from Stacey. Made to feel like an old friend. Food amazing and hated having to leave some on the plate, but the portions were huge. White chocolate and raspberry cheesecake well worth the extra effort to finish. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening.

We joined some friends here and called ahead with all of 5 mins notice, the lovely owner and staff accommodated us even though they had several bookings and were due to be very busy. We ordered the beef roast, the lamb roast and the steak and ale pie as a roast... the food and service was superb! The host couldn't have been more pleasant or attentive and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone passing through. We had a new-born with us and the toilets were well stocked with a baby changing area and wet wipes (lovely touch). Thank you

This is the busiest little local I have been in for years! We were leaving from Stanstead Airport the following morning and wanted an evening meal, trip advisor ratings were really good so we booked. We walked into the crowded bar area, obviously all locals. Great atmosphere. Our table was in a quiet room just the two of us. Meal was standard pub grub but chips were delicious. Great service happy staff.

food just as good as last time we were there plenty of meat on the plate HUGE Yorkshire pudding and plenty of fresh well cooked vegetables...as always Stacey and staff very friendly and nothing too much trouble for them... even though they were busy they kept checking that all was ok... we had treacle sponge and custard too yummy.

A lovely warm welcome. Nothing to much trouble. My daughter has had a lot of trouble with her IBS. Gluten free, no problem, just ask & they will try & help. The roast was a little more expensive, but well worth it .I rather have there roast dinner any day to a cheap one!

Stopped for lunch half way through our 30 km bike ride. We did book ahead as it was Sunday and lady who served us couldn’t have been more helpful. Great pub grub menu our kids 10 and 13 were suitably full up. Small garden and play frame but perfect for our needs. Would recommend

Met up with our friends here as it\s in to middle in distance. When I booked the table I was told that they allow a 2 hour slot and would that be ok I said yes but did not anticipate the speed we were dealt with, it just all felt very hurried and the food at best was average We will not be going back.

Ok, so we arrived later than expected and hadn’t booked. Ordered drinks before asked if they were still serving food. Unfortunately, they’d stopped but then we were offered ‘free roasties’ and we happened to say we actually wanted to eat. Offered us ploughman’s- we had 2 between 3 of us (as well as the roasties - which were amazing). They did everything they could to accommodate us and we left very happy! Well done and thank you.

On many occasions when one returns to a memorable pub both the visit and dining experience is not the same. However, on this occasion Matt and Stacy certainly raised the bar even higher than my last visit over a year ago as the whole experience of revisiting the Rose & Crown was wonderful, and the food from preparation to presentation was outstanding and superb value for money.

We met up with friends and found the pub on Tripadvisor as a venue halfway between where we were staying. The staff were welcoming and both helpful and efficient. Our food was freshly made - we had a combination of pub favourites and lovely salads. The home made desserts were amazing. Lemon tart fresh out of the oven was a real highlight. We now need to find some excuses to go back there.

Three of us stopped for an evening meal on a Friday night before flying to Italy on holiday. We ordered a prawn cocktail to start to share, minute steak and chicken curry as mains and our child had ham, egg and chips. This food with a drink each came to almost £45. All the food was very tasty, the portion sizes were ample and the pub had a nice atmosphere. The staff were efficient and friendly. We sat inside but there are tables outside which were popular. This was so close to a 5 rating but for a missing naan bread! The curry was advertised on the board with naan (and ordered as such) but it arrived with a poppadum with no comment as to the difference. When queried we were advised that they had run out of naan bread and hence the substitution. As a poppadum is not a filling as a naan an extra poppadum was requested and this was provided without any problem. So yes we're being picky here but as the meal ordered was not what arrived it loses 1 star. However, we would definitely recommend the pub and we'd go back if we're ever in the area again.

What can I say about the Rose and Crown..it is truly a gem. This pub is so good that I don't even use my local which is 100 metres from my house. Instead I opt to drive to "the Rose". The atmosphere, food, beer, friendly clientele and of course Matt and Stacey are what makes this more than a pub, its a community. A place where it is truly a pleasure to spend time whether it is a pint with a couple of friends or a long lunch (the food is incredible) on a Saturday afternoon with the family. I don't go anywhere else and if you have a couple of hours spare and you are in the vicinity then I suggest you don't either... Enjoy!

What a great find. Phoned from the airport and they fitted us in on a really busy Father’s day for Sunday lunch. Fabulous choice of roasts, all home cooked and beautifully presented. Everything tasted great, just a perfect Sunday roast with amazing Yorkshire puddings. The staff were so well organised and super friendly, great service. They also have a fantastic list of gins to choose from, spoiled for choice! Highly recommended.

Had a lot of time to kill at Stansted Airport and after ruling out the very poor Radison we decided to go further afield and came here! We booked with no notice and despite it being a busy Sunday we were accommodated on the basis they get the table back quickly. We both had a roast dinner (1 pork and 1 beef) and both turned up quickly and with attention to detail that was a joy. Extremely tasty all round. Other high spots.. huge Gin menu and nice selection of beers. Also seemed to cater well for kids. All in top pub!

This place is astounding. Food always at a high quality, but tonight's sea bream was just incredible. My wife's pork and chorizo pie was also fantastic. Excellent service and a great atmosphere. Thoroughly recommend.

We popped into the Rose & Crown and were very impressed. This is a proper English pub with very friendly management, a great atmosphere and a good selection of freshly prepared food. We had a great conversation with the landlord who made us feel very welcome.

This is a great little pub. The owner was very welcoming, attentive and the food (traditional fish and chips) was nicely cooked. They are proud of their high rating on TripAdvisor and in my opinion it is very well deserved. Obviously very popular with locals, and very handy for the airport. Good decision to have lunch here rather than a floppy sandwich or junk food at Birchanger services! Good that you had Doom Bar on as well. Thanks very much, Stacy.

we read about this on tripadvisor and decided to try it out - partly because one of us likes gin. We all had different roasts and we all thoroughly enjoyed it. We sat out the back and it was a very nice atmosphere. The staff were lovely and very friendly. And the service was excellent.

We booked very last minute and they went out of their was to fit us in and make room for one of our party who is disabled.

The Rose and Crown is a comfortable, friendly local with a great atmosphere. There's a good choice of interesting food on offer with smaller portions available for children or those who don’t want a mountain of food. I recommend the Sunday roast - you can say how many roast potatoes you want and it comes with side dishes of lovely fresh veg.

Phoned to ask if last minute availabilty , they were more than obliging, re-arranging tables for our group of 7. The owner was very welcoming and couldn't have been more helpful with our fussy group, 3 vegetarians, 4 children. The food was excellent , the staff were very friendly, great atmosphere in a traditional pub, much nicer than a chain restaurant. Would definitely recommend.

We decided to celebrate the Easter weekend with our family and friends with a meal at our amazing local pub.

We visited this Pub for lunch on 31 March 2018 whilst exploring the Stansted Mountfitchet area. It's rather off of the beaten track, but is well worth finding. Three interesting and well-kept Real Ales available, together with a wide range of menu options. All three in our party agreed that the home made food was excellent and the portion sizes were more than generous. You won't leave here feeling hungry! The service was efficient and friendly, and the Pub is 'dog friendly' (unfortunately ours had elected to stay at home on that day!). Based on our visit, I would highly recommend the Rose & Crown.

My sister booked here for Sunday lunch on Mother’s Day and to be honest as we had left it late we chose somewhere that had the availability. However what a lucky find this was. Only 10 minutes from where we live and an absolute gem of authentic british pub. Totally what I want for a Sunday lunchtime, bustling, excellent food, families and dogs. The food was lovely and the bar staff really attentive and pleasant. Stacy is a “proper” landlady and a million miles away from some of the more bland chain type pubs. We will be back again and probably even more since my husband has just pointed out that the beer is exceptionally well kept and unusually these days the correct temperature. All round fab!

We have just got back from an amazing Sunday lunch, the food and service was excellant, one of the best Sunday Roasts I've had for a long time. All the food was obviously home cooked and extremely tasty topped of with good Beer and wine. I would totally recommend, I think we have found a little Gem and will definitely be returning.

Went for a sunday roast for the second time. Only to find that it has yet again been cancelled. Starting to think that they don’t actually cook roast dinners. Staff seemed stressed and mistreated , during the time I was also waiting, there were numerous arguments and lots of shouting from the kitchen, several swear words being passed around despite my kids being with me. The lady who seemed to be in charge instigated most of the arguments, not a nice way to treat staff and a very awkward situation to be in. Despite not having the roast dinner we visited for, have been other occasions where the food has been quite nice, veg seemed fresh and the steak and kidney pie was very good .

Been meaning to try a while and definitely not disappointed. Lovely friendly pub, really busy and can see why. Halloumi and whitebait starters were delicious, mains of roasts and pie cooked wonderfully and huge portions, all the trimmings (especially the cauliflower cheese which was fab). Four of us went to grab a bite to eat - my daughter and her partner having just moved into the area. Great pub grub. All home cooked - portions are large so you need to have a good appetite! Wide choice of food - something for everyone - prawn cocktail, whitebait, pulled beef burger, mushroom stroganoff, lamb, mint and pea pie, bread and butter puddings, nutella cheesecake - you get the picture. Staff were very friendly, warm and welcoming - would definitely go back!
