Romulus in Stockport

Visited Romulus for the first time tonight, although have lived in the area for 20+ years and have driven past most days. It was a very last minute decision and only booked this afternoon for a table of 3 for 6pm. Lovely guy answered my call and sorted me a table. 15 mins before our reservation time, 3 of us became 4 and we were running about 10/15 mins behind. After a second phone call to explain and ask could they accommodate a fourth person - our reservation was amended. The atmosphere in the restaurant is that of a very friendly family looking after you. We were seated immediately in an almost full restaurant and ordered our drinks while we looked through the menu. My husband just felt like ribs and cheesy garlic bread and myself and eldest son had pizzas. My youngest son had already eaten and do he just ordered a garlic bread. The food arrived promptly, and apart from the plain garlic bread being a bit dry and overcooked, everything g else was delicious. There were plenty of ribs and the pizzas tasted extremely fresh. To complete our meal we had chocolate fudge cake with ice cream which was a big hit and one of the special desserts, which was similar to a custard slice. While nice, this just felt a little bit hard as was still quite cold from the fridge. Our whole visit was very pleasant and the staff were all lovely. We will be back

We had a family meal on Saturday and can’t fault anything, service was excellent and personable, food was lovely and didn’t wait long at all for it to arrive. Can’t wait to go back.

Great experience here with excellent speedy service for our daughter's 50th birthday. We all loved the food and it was especially good to see this long serving business in Bramhall continuing to thrive. Well done!!

White bread in a Italian restaurant? Pizza was terrible, looking like a frozen pizza and no quality of the ingredients at all. It's a shame rapresent the Italian cousine in this way.... definitely not back in there.

Great restaurant with good food and atmosphere. We've luckily managed to get a table at peak times as a walk-in (fri/ sat eve) but would definitely recommend booking in advance to save the fuss!

I write this review with no intention of causing any offence, it is purely to hopefully give Romulus a nudge to strive to improve. To clarify, the service and staff are fantastic, cannot complain one bit... Atmosphere was nice and relaxed for a midweek evening. I am reviewing the food. I grew up in Bramhall and Romulus has always been there, however the last time I ate here was 15 years ago. and it hasn't changed, sure it's got it's charm, it's reassuring to the classic Bramhall clientele, the one's who have never ventured any further. I am not an expert in Italian cuisine, however I have been to Italy on numerous occasions, and also been lucky enough to have eaten at some very good Italian restaurants outside the Bramhall borders. What they serve here is absolutely edible and inoffensive, but to read reviews saying it is the best thing they've ever eaten is simply shocking and misleading. The food is basic at best, garlic bread starter is fine, lovely fresh garlic and tomato, white bait was totally fine. Between us we had pizzas, spaghetti, lasagne and cannoloni, I tried all of them and they were all just... OK, nothing bad nothing good. Middle of the road... something you could get at any decent pub these days... not a long standing Italian Trattoria! My main was the Romulus pizza, and when it arrived at our table my face visibly dropped. It looked like a kids frozen pizza, not a beautifully hand stretched artisan sourdough crust with big bubbling volcanos of cheese and burnt bits from a 1000 degree stone baked pizza oven. It wasn't memorable or special in the slightest, and I think thats a shame for an Italian place, it should strive for better but it rests on its laurels of times gone by. But one day those clients are going to have left us, Come on Romulus - you should be the BEST in the northwest never mind just Bramhall... I really wish you the best and hope the next time I come in it's a little more inspired.

A very nice, traditional Italian restaurant. Comfortable with it's menu which hasn't changed in many years (apart from the prices, like everywhere) Friendly and attentive staff.

Thought it was time to leave a further review. We have been dining in this establishment every 2 months for the last 10 years (other than throughout covid pandemic). The service we receive is always second to none. One particular visit in June 2022 was an exceptional experience. Gokhan was on top form and made us feel welcome. The food was to a very high standard. I had the mixed fish starter, followed by fillet steak ( cooked rare) for my main. My wife had the Pollo Cacciatore for her main course. We both shared the Dolcelatte cheese. All the food was cooked to perfection. My Wife is gluten free, they happily accommodate her dietary needs and explain how the menu can be adapted. The food and service is exceptional from this establishment. First class experience, please do not hesitate to eat at Romulus!

After moving to Bramhall we decided to try and to be honest I wish we hadn't , it’s the worst Italian I’ve ever had. Food was very poor, and although the service was good it’s the food that I would prefer to have as 5 stars. The starters I had the pate and my partner had the garlic mushrooms which was tasteless and then the pizza reminded me of a cheap one from a supermarket, the base was like cardboard, if you want a fresh base pizza just save your money. Avoid if you want fresh home cooked Italian food. You can get better ready meals from the supermarket, you have Gusto in Cheadle Hulme a 5 minute drive which you can’t compare. The bill came to £55 which was the set menu for three, my whole family thought it was dreadful. I’m not picky about food normally and would never give a negative review, will never visit again. I would welcome feedback from Romulas.

Visited for the first time in years. Lovely staff and got a lovely table but waiters and waitresses just a bit over attentive and intrusive. Felt really rushed and glasses refilled every 10 mins and questioned whether everything was ok every 15 mins. Would have preferred just being allowed to have my meal at my own pace in peace. Food decidedly average. We thought the garlic bread undercooked and other starters very small for the price Pasta mains nice but tbh those with fish and prawns in them a bit over cooked. Had a nice evening with friends but would only do their early bird menu in future.

Had the Polo Diane, which was a single chicken fillet cut in half. Not even a whole chicken fillet, swamped in Diane sauce with cash and carry chips, whilst half a load of Warburton’s toasty was left on the dresser at the side of our table. I’ve genuinely had better Tesco meal deals out of a tinfoil tray than this… I appreciate that the place was busy and it has its appeal to some, but sadly I didn’t discover why that was the case. Disappointing at best…

Really enjoyed our meal last night, the antipasto sharing platter was such a lovely selection. The staff are always welcoming even when the restaurant was so busy, but always has a lovely atmosphere.

Attended this restaurant on Saturday night, after being tricked into going by the good reviews. The atmosphere was good and the staff welcoming. However the food was beyond poor and not what you should expect from an Italian restaurant, it was laughable experience. First we had the starter special bruschetta with crab (£7) it was 3 measly pieces of thin plain toasted bread with a spoonful of crab meat. Like a cracker with some tinned meat on with dollop of Parmesan on to cover the taste. Then we ordered the special seafood pasta (£16) which was ok fairly tasty but nothing special. We also ordered the pizza (£13) which topped the experience off, i have never experienced a pizza like this at any establishment it was only comparable to £1 frozen pizzas I used to have at uni. They said it was hand stretched bread dough and that’s just the way the chef does it. For £13 as well it isn’t a cheap pizza I have had 100x better at pubs let alone Italian restaurant. I normally don’t review restaurants but felt I needed to due to being duped by the current reviews and rating, it’s a shame as the restaurant is nice but the food could be easily improved. Felt like I was on an episode of Gordon Ramsey kitchen nightmares and was thinking what he would say throughout the evening. Overall I’d recommend visiting one of the other many restaurants in the town, or just staying at home with a frozen pizza.

Had a truly awful experience. Food was very poor 3 starters- prawn piccanti, cheap tomato sauce no taste, ribs in good and a deep fried fishcake where the oil made a puddle on the plate 4 mains- sea bass very good, carbonara bland and egg less, steak Rossini burnt croutons and overly sweet sauce. Vitello was like no veal ever seen before 3 puddings- ice cream, an overly sickly almond cake and an un pleasant cheesecake Drinks- Gavi was good. Negroni wasn't, good or a Negroni Service rushed, sloppy and taken away before food finished. I guess they had taken too many reservations Why 2 stars not one. Because we finished up laughing at how bad it was and it has made us appreciate how good all the other village restaurants are We were last in in 1997 and we can remember why we hadn't been since

It's a long time since I've been to Romulus because my recollection was that it was alright but no more than that. I've changed my view after a visit during the last week. The service was very quick and the food was excellent. The chicken chasseur was as good as I could have made myself! And the cost was reasonable. The only criticism is that it was noisy. But that is a generic problem with many restaurants where the fashion is to have bare floors so there is nothing to absorb the noise. Conversation is not impossible but it is harder than it should be.

Food OK but not exceptional. Rather bijou so can become quite crowded.

Most wonderful atmosphere and service. It was our 2nd anniversary. It was Sunday and the restaurant was packed, and no wonder. Best quality Italian food ever. Superb service from staff and management. Great family atmosphere in traditional Italian style with plenty of children. Both myself and my wife will return soon. Poped in for a last minute decision to have a meal out. Fully intended to eat off the main menu but when we arrived the early doors menu was still on…… wow it was fabulous selection. We all found our choice of food on there and it was delicious. Service was perfect, staff polite, attentive and friendly. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for great Italian food. Thank you

Went for our anniversary dinner and have to say it was absolutely brilliant from start to finish. Amazing staff. Very friendly, absolutely gorgeous food. Went here for the early bird special and it was terrific. Service and food was fab. Great atmosphere. Only negative was no cider:( , however everything else was spot on. Went for drinks in Bramhall afterwards. Very vibrant village stmosphere.

One of Bramhall's longest established businesses and I can certainly see why! The staff are just great, so attentive but not in your face but also friendly. The food is fantasic, we especially like the fillet steak with peppercorn sauce and fish dishes that are on the Special menu. We will be back again soon and it is great to see the village with life again after the lockdowns. Keep up the good work.

Excellent service. Old fashioned dated Italian food. Need to use far better, fresh ingredients. To make really good taste. Looked like brought in desserts, these could have been home made. The other 3 friends agreed not a memorable meal. Just been A Tavola scillian. Wow, wow chef needs to eat there to really see what good food tastes like. Staff fanastic at Romulas but honestly could not recommend food wise. Oh and if the garlic bread had been much thinner we could have seen the plate through it. Serious over haul needex

Fab early bird menu great choice and value for money.

Really nice family favourite, great friendly service and good menu choice without being overwhelmed. We have come here a lot over many years, it's quite cosy so we don't get here so much now the youngest has a larger wheelchair but my wife and me can enjoy a night here very easily. Have also enjoyed 6 of us sat round a big table, always a good atmosphere and attentive staff. Only complaint, they stopped doing the Romulus house take on Eton Mess 😉😁

It's not authentic. If you arent a good cook and want some hearty foods its ok, but nothing to write home about. Friendly staff but more like a cafe. Pizza base was pre-made, not freshly made each day. Not terrible, just average.

Visited here for early tea - 2 x adults and 2 x kids- the food was amazing and only bettered by the fantastic friendly service! We shared starters and then had a mix of pasta and pizza mains followed by salted caramel cheesecake, tiramisu and creme brûlée- absolutely delicious- washed down with traditional Limoncellos- Read one review on here that rated one star and said there was no flavour? Clearly visited a different restaurant as there is no way it belongs to Romulus!!!

A family run busines I believe been in bramhall for many years. Their service is superb , nothing is to much trouble. The standard of cooking/food speaks for it's sell with a very large client base of regular clients. When you speak to people in Bramhal very few have not had a meal at Romulus.

Been a while since our last visit due to CV sadly, but our return was so worth it! Dined with friends who we’d long promised to take here and they weren’t disappointed.. thoroughly enjoyed our barbecue spare ribs so delicious and gamberoni piccanti starters followed by the peppered steak & pollo Diane! Perfect choice red wine and desserts with customary ambience and service we know so well! Great to see Salvatore and the team again and see you all soon!

This was my first and last trip to Romulus. The food is over priced and tasteless. For starter we ordered the bruschetta, which was okay but the bread wasn’t fresh and the portion was tiny for the price. For mains I ordered pasta which was bland and basically a tin of chopped tomatoes with no seasoning. My partner ordered a pizza which was laughable. The menu stated that pizza dough was made fresh daily. It was obviously a ready made pizza base with very little effort thrown in with toppings. I can’t understand the positive reviews, this is by far the worst Italian restaurant I’ve ever been to. Avoid if you want fresh home cooked Italian food! You can get better ready meals from the supermarket!

We had tried (unsuccessfully) to eat here many times over recent years, but only calling in on the off chance that a table would be available. This time we had the foresight to book in advance - and were not disappointed. Unobtrusive screens separated tables to ensure social distancing requirements adhered to did not spoil the ambience. A typical Italian menu, but everything prepared, cooked and served is top notch. We will be back soon - as long as we remember to book a table

Wonderful experience, first time when I actually had fun, good vibes and I have been impressed by staff, Mae to be more specific, acting professional, made me feel welcomed, she was very efficient, made me feel like home. 5 star for restaurant, 5 star for Mae and staff.

Went here with my Mum during the "eat out to help out" scheme. It's a small restaurant...nicely decorated and with Covid measures in place...screens where needed and staff wearing masks, hand gel readily available...spot on.We were there early so were able to take advantage of the early bird menu...£13.95 for a starter, main and a coffee...fantastic value even without the eat out to help out discount!The calamari was our least favourite...it wasn't terrible but I've had better...a couple of slightly chewy bits and the batter looked a bit anaemic...not the worst I've ever had though. The ribs were lovely...fell off the bone and the sauce was very tasty. Perfect for dipping the cheesy garlic bread in...nom!The house red is perfect...nice and fruity.I had the pollo a la creme and my mum had the chicken in pepper and brandy sauce, both of which were lovely. The vegetables were just right...baby new potatoes, green beans and julienne carrots...not overcooked and just the right amount. We went for afagatto for dessert...you can't really go wrong with that. The coffee was particularly nice...very nutty...I even asked the brand do I could look at sourcing some myself...it's Alfredo apparently.The staff were all lovely...attentive enough without being in your face...nice and chatty and very polite and helpful. It was apparent that they're happy in their job. This makes a big difference to the atmosphere in a place and it did make it feel very friendly and homely.We'll definitely be back and will be taking other family members when the restrictions are eased again.Great value for money and a lovely atmosphere...perfect thanks

This was my first visit for probably 25 years, not for want of trying but every time I’ve thought about going, they’ve been full!Firstly, excellent social distancing measures with screens between tables which ensured they probably aren’t operating at reduced capacity. These screens didn’t seem instrusive. Starters were whitebait and spicy prawns. Both were fairly standard but done wellMains were lobster ravioli and veal saltimbocca and were both excellent. Desserts were pistachio ice cream and frozen raspberry pavlova. The menu is standard Italian fayre but it’s good very well, the service friendly and the atmosphere was good. It won’t be 25 years before I go again

Felt completely relaxed and safe, mainly because all the staff were wearing masks, despite the heat! Tables well spaced and plastic screens between. Gusto in Cheadle Hulme could learn a thing or two.Food freshly cooked and piping hot. Particularly recommend the garlic mushrooms. Staff very professional: always there when you want them, not if you don't.We've booked again for next Monday - I think that says it all

Food and service was excellent plus it was value for money

Visited on the first Monday of the Eat Out to Help Out scheme.Maybe most importantly - felt safe throughout the meal and time tehre, plenty of hand sanitizer available, staff were wearing face masks, large plastic screen between tables (which were well spaced out). Not worried about safety at all - good effort!Secondly - the food and service were stellar. Didn't feel ignored or oo heavily focused on, the staff keep an eye out and if you need them they will be over shortly. The three members of staff we interacted with were all very professional, friendly, and top-quality all around.Food was amazing (especially for the price), and I would highly recommend the penne with smoked salmon and crayfish (though this is not in the lunch/early evening offer).We will certainly be revisiting.

A lovely little Italian restaurant tucked away. It is only small but they will fit you in where they can. The food is exceptional and the staff are lovely. My only criticism is that I wish they had better Rose wine as the one they have isn’t very nice to

Why did we leave it so long?It’s years since we have been, but went for my birthday meal on Friday. And frankly it was one of the nicest Italians I’ve had. Comparable to a top Italian in Manchester. Great food, great service and at a very reasonable price, I can’t fault the whole experience, certainly we will be back soon. I can’t wait. Highly recommended

Revisited as a group of 15 to celebrate my birthday on Sat 25th Jan. Excellent food, ab quality as usual . Restaurant was full and everyone had a great time. Whether your a small group or a huge party , service and standards are impeccable.Book yourself a table and you won't be disappointed.

Good food but had lasagna and although tasted nice was more like cannelloni hardly any pasta on a bed of tomato juice , Would have something different next time
