Never before has a roast dinner rendered me speechless but everything was spectacular across the board. Between us we tried all of the roast options, no complaints from anyone, everything cooked to perfection and the biggest Yorkshire puds I’ve ever seen. Looking forward to returning!

Booked here for Sunday lunch . No children’s menu but 25% off for small portion of roast . Beef was £16 so a kids beef would be £12 . So we opted for a spare plate as he is 2 years old . Ordered beef , pork belly and lamb shoulder which came promptly . It was ok ! Presentation average slightly dried gravy on the meat . Yorkshire soggy and potatoes hard . Veg was nice but lacking in quantity. Had to get up and ask for horseradish as no sauces were offered , my wife’s beef came with no Yorkshire so when it arrived on a separate cold plate we used that for our baby’s lunch as the spare plate we requested never arrived . The horseradish however did arrive in a bowl with no spoon . Salt pot was empty and the pepper although full did not come out as the lid was congealed . At no stage were we offered more drinks . No one welcomed us and no one said goodbye . The drinks were lovely the food average . The staff were pleasant and did try but the waitress cleared two peoples plates whilst two more were still eating . Don’t do that . We will use this lovely pub again as we have never been disappointed before . But “guys “ you need to re-think this Sunday thing .

Lovely pub with very friendly staff (always). Today I had the cod and chips and it was honestly the best I’ve had in many years... perhaps EVER from a pub. The fish was perfectly cooked and tender which went so well with the crispy batter which was not oily at all. The tartar sauce was spot on - full of flavour, great crunch, perfectly balanced and not too rich. The mushy peas served as a kind of sauce under the fish and really brought the meal alive. I was even impressed with the burnt lemon and how I was able to juice it so effortlessly. Finally, the chips were very homemade and fresh but could’ve been a bit crisper, warmer, and would’ve benefited (in my opinion) with more flavour/spice/salt. My partner however LOVED the chips so maybe it’s just down to personal opinion. I’ll be recommending and will be back for sure!

Was taken here for a first date. Great quirky pub with open fire and great fixtures and fittings. Loved the whole look of it. Womens toilets disappointing after I heard about the men's but that's not the reason I went. Waiter was lovely, but the food was awful. I was so let down, the menu sounded amazing. If I was eating with my eyes wow... but sadly my imagination was not meet. Starters we shared was bread with olive oil and baked camembert, the bread was so hard!! The Camembert was baked beautifully. Main was so bad we didn't eat them. I had venison burger, it was dry beyond belief and the dipping chips which sounded amazing was well nothing to note. My date had chilli, he didn't eat it, so poor in quality. So with hope we went onto pudding Kew Lime Pie... the base was so hard I couldn't put my spoon through it and just scraped the cheesecake off, that tasted really good I have to add. Due to being a first date I didn't want to complain. I wish I did it was expensive for food I actually couldn't eat. Such a let down, I will not be going back which is a shame as its local to me. Guys fix this, prime location, bad food.

Gastropub prices - quality = 2 for a fiver. Took friends here on separate occasions - each time the food was awful, over cooked, bland, and nasty. We complained and the chef's responsewas ignorant and arrogant - no responsibility taken at all. Shame cos the pub looks nice and the bar staff are nice too.

We visited for Sunday lunch and were very disappointed with the quality and quantity of the food. I had roast lamb, which was very fatty and a very small serving. The roast potatoes were the frozen ones and rock hard. For some strange reason I also had a frozen yorkshire pudding. The mint sauce was thin and mainly vinegar. My wife had the roast beef, which was better quality and quantity, but with very poor gravy. This lot came to £31. Very poor value

Having eaten here before sometime ago we thought as we where driving by and were starving we’d stop.Tables for a Sunday lunchtime were plentiful, no reservation signs on any tables that I could see and the big dinning hall seemed to be closed. Not a good sign. DO NOT be fooled by the beautiful pictures, the food was nothing like it and I didn’t see any meal come out looking anything like the lovely enticing pictures. Plain, ‘something I might throw together at home’ would sum it up. I had a sweet potato with Mediterranean veg, goats cheese and l think was a salad although chopped lettuce on its own is not what I would call a salad. I think it had been prepared sometime before as the edges were dark green and bruised. It cost £12.50 I believe. My partner had chilli which he said was ‘ alright’ hardly a glowing compliment. It was not a memorable meal, will not venture back anytime soon.

Chef even changed a dish to accommodate personal preference, nothing too much trouble, even homemade chips food especially the king prawn tagliatelli delicious and homemade mackerel pate lovely. After 9 minutes, at 11.59 a lady approached us and said that there were no menus yet as the printer was out of ink but that the kitchen didn’t open until 12 anyway! She was pleasant and offered to get us drinks, but why take bookings if they don’t want people there at that time?

Went to the Roebuck with my wife and two friends. We were seated on arrival but we sat at the table for over ten minutes and nobody brought us the menus.I went to the bar and collected some. A waitress came and took our orders. The food arrived quite quickly. My wife had brie with vegetables and my friends wife had brie with chips the meals were well presented and quite a reasonable size. My friend had ham egg and chips but you couldn't sea the ham and eggs as they were covered in a layer of chips. I had paella which when it arrived was miniscule, my friends thought it was my starter! The price of the meals was very high at £12.50. The wives ordered puddings which were also expensive. When they arrived they had run out of spoons! The did manage to find one tea spoon and a table spoon. The lagers that my friend and I had were London prices at £5.50 per pint, the most expensive I have had in this area.We will certainly not be returning.

From the road the pub looks a bit lack lustre and uninviting, being on a series of bends in the road it is easy to pass it by, but don't. On entering the phrase less is more has not been heeded and visually it is a bit busy; but this is some of its charm. The other qualities are a warm welcome, an excellent range of beers on tap, a very comprehensive menu and a nothing is too much trouble attitude from the staff. The food was wholesome, tasty and plentiful and whilst not setting the world alight I really can't fault the pub at all. If it were mine I'd try and make the exterior a little more eye-catching and colourful particularly at this dull time of year to enable passers by to quickly make the decision to stop and enjoy.

Worth making a detour to find this pub. Quirky Steampunk decor with a decent menu and lots of choice. It is our local and when so many pubs are closing it is great to have this on the doorstep. The food is reliable and sourced locally. The beers are the best though - try Zamzama from the Gun Brewery or a pint of Aurora from Firle-based Burning Sky Brewery - but make sure your friend can drive you home.

Pub grub, sensible prices and good selection. Had a lunch here after booking in advance to save a table, and it’s dog friendly so a real plus. Ordered the Camembert first off as a starter, so expected to have to wait a while so it would be melted all the way through. Nothing beats dunking bread into melted cheese. Not to be, the person who served us seemed to have forgotten it, then on arrival it was hard in the middle and throughout most of it, so fail. Ordered the Irish stew. The looks on my friends faces on arrival said it all. Think I had a bad day as all the other meals looked fine. So I’m giving 4 for the prices and atmosphere.

We had a large family Sunday lunch with nine of us. The room we dined in was the large hall to the side of the pub, very grand, avoid the wicker chairs though! The roasts were very good and came quite promptly. The staff were all friendly, but either it seemed to be their first day, or they were teenagers, and there was much confusion about what we were supposed to get for our money. I had to debate the young man serving our vegetables to persuade him that his 'one serving between two' formula didn't match the number he'd given us. Later when we ordered tea we were given a single small tea pot for three people which only had just enough tea for two cups. When I asked the young woman serving for more tea, she said they'd run out of tea pots! Eventually more tea appeared, but we shouldn't have had to argue for it.

I had the last serving of short ribs and my wife had the steak burger. Mine was served with cabbage, mushrooms in wine sauce and mashed potatoes. It was really good and the flavours worked well. Really fancied the puddings but no room! When the bill turned up so did some wine and lager (what we had been drinking) with complements for our anniversary! Message to the Gun. We gathered one waitress was very new - she told us she'd been washing dishes until that evening, and had been moved to waitressing - with no training... poor lass. I had booked a table for 7 for a family get together at 2.00 p.m. on 22nd October. I booked online two weeks prior to the visit following recommendations re menu choice and consulting the menus online as we had 2 vegetarians and one vegan in our party. The visit didn't start well as a simple gin and tonic request (gin menu provided) revealed that the first two choices of gin were both sold out. Fruit ciders were also all sold out. The pint of Plateau IPA which was poured for my husband was a peculiar colour and had a bad smell and we all urged him to return it. The server stated it should not have been served at all, but in actual fact it had been him who served it! We were pleased to note we were not charged for that drink. The Roebuck Inn prides itself on serving locally produced meats and since my husband is an agricultural contractor he was looking forward to some local lamb. They had run out! The waiting staff appeared to have no knowledge of any of the dishes served and all questions had to be directed to the kitchen. Having said all that, the meals we did eventually choose were tasty and well presented and everyone enjoyed their main course and desserts (we had chosen to forego starters). When I settle the bill and was asked if everything was OK, I mentioned that they seemed to have run out of a lot of things. "Oh yes" I was told, "that always happens on Sundays". Well if it always happens on Sundays how about doing something about it?

The breakfast was the best pub breakfast we have ever enjoyed whether going for continental or cooked.....or both! Go there! Enjoy!!

We had reserved a room for B&B around a visit to Glyndebourne. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, the Roebuck was delightful. We were welcomed by the host who showed us to our room, stocked the fridge with fresh milk, and then, for a quick bar lunch, rustled up some tasty chicken noodle soup. The bar staff were friendly relaxed and efficient. In our room the welcome tray was full of tasty home baked biscuits and drinks. My wife particularly liked the pomegranate tea (and the biscuits). After a day at the opera, Radio 3 on a Roberts DAB set made a welcome change to News At Ten.The breakfast buffet, freshly squeezed orange juice, toast made from artisan bread, as well as the home made jams were delicious. The scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and the veggie breakfast of halloumi, mushrooms, tomatoes, poached eggs and baked beans were as they should be, cooked to order and extremely tasty. This establishment exudes generosity of spirit and we thoroughly recommended it.

With it's wooden floors and comfy kitchen chairs the Roebuck Inn is a charming tavern deep in the heart of the Sussex countryside. My wife and I ordered liver and bacon which came with a delicious gravy. A sprig of green decked the dish which gave it a posh appearance Dessert was ice cream, two scoops. We requested some chocolate sauce which arrive in good time for the sauce had been specially made as it was not part of the dessert and was not from a bottle, it was home made. With two glasses of Chardonnay and orange soft drink followed by delicious herbal tea, the bill came to £38:48. Excellent service from a young lady who was most anxious to please. Reserve a table and arrive early to avoid the crowds which were not in evidence on the day we were there. A cautionary note on leaving the car park - be careful when re-entering the road! A most enjoyable meal at an affordable price.

We had been to The Roebuck Inn before but only for lunch. We wanted a traditional breakfast to celebrate our anniversary and, as a pub with rooms, The Roebuck is currently serving breakfast every day to non-residents. A good variety of breakfasts is on offer. We had a traditional full English and an Eggs Benedict. There was no problem in swapping the muffin for sourdough toast with the Eggs Benedict and both breakfasts arrived promptly, following a 'starter' of freshly squeezed orange juice (which was genuinely freshly squeezed). The quality was excellent and when we expressed an interest in some more sourdough toast a fresh basket was brought, complete with more butter and some jams, for no extra charge. We rounded off our breakfast with two flat white coffees, which were also good but could have been just a little bit hotter. (We both like our coffee very hot.) It was a sunny morning and we were able to eat outside, not far from the pigs and free range chickens in the lovely pub garden.

We came to The Roebuck Inn for a midweek lunch with friends solely on the basis of the quality of the bacon sandwich I had on a previous visit. On a Thursday lunchtime it was busy but not packed, which was just as well as we hadn't booked. We were all hungry so went for starters. These were generous portions and extremely good. The mains too were excellent, though perhaps not as generous, but the quality of the home-cooked chips more than made up for any other deficiencies. Some of us even managed puddings (for research purposes only of course) and these were also very good, with a special mention needed for the home-made ice cream. Throughout the meal the staff were attentive and helpful. For a couple of us, the extensive range of real ales and craft beers ensured that a very pleasurable afternoon was spent while the rain hammered down outside.

My wife and I (with dog) stayed the night after a hike on the South Downs. We were greeted warmly by the staff, all of whom were genuinely lovely and friendly, and after a restorative pint were shown to our accommodation. The room was great, newly renovated, warm and spotless. The tea station was well equipped (cafetière coffee, not instant) with loads of free biscuits and treats. The bed super comfy. The dinner menu was varied and interesting and the food we had was delicious and cooked to an extremely high standard. In my view, the Inn is not a pub, it is a proper restaurant that just happens to look like a pub - hence i thought was not overpriced at all (as other reviewers have commented). The atmosphere was quirky, relaxed and above all friendly. Chatting to one of the landlords and regulars, it is obvious how passionate they are about the inn, the food, the people. Breakfast was incredible. I can't recommend this place enough.

A friend suggested The Roebuck Inn for lunch as a mid meeting point. It was ideal. Although booked for the restaurant, we chose to eat in the bar area. Good varied menu options, including a "value" menu - £2.99 for starters (fish goujons) and £4.99 for main (beef chilli) - certainly plenty to chose from and reasonable portion size.It seems a popular place as all the tables quickly filled up but the service level remained high & prompt. Friendly staff in a nice atmosphere so happy to meet there again

This is a great pub in Laughton, not far from Lewis. Garden out back complete with 2 pigs, hens and some quirky touches. We arrived early evening 4 adults 1 child - were made to feel very welcome. Good comfortable seating nice and warm on a cold winter night and friendly service. We had starters of antipasto, hummus olives, 5 different main courses (2 vegetarian) and all the food was delicious. We had to take a break it find room for desserts which were excellent - homemade ice cream was best ever. Good wine and beer too, reasonable prices. Highly recommend.

Eating here was a long-shot, as we had never been before! What a fantastic place it is... Whilst there we tried to describe the decor and sum it up in a few words... failed to fully justify this amazing place! The nearest I got was 'Art-Deco' with touch of old colonial and slightly bizarre... You must go and see for yourselves, you should not be disappointed. There is a lot to see and take in, including mechanical displays. Oh yes! and the food was excellent too, great friendly staff who were also very helpful. We will go back again asap as it was a delight to be there. They have jazz some days of the week too, but we could not be there this time for that, so can't comment! Good big car park with free parking. Good selection on the menu. Eating here truly is a entertaining, amazing and a very enjoyable experience.. Try it for yourselves, but please leave space my my family to go again.... NB. Disabled, should check for easy access as we did not notice any facilities, although I am sure that there must be!

We stayed with our family of three for two nights and had a great stay! Dinner is typically pub style but clearly they use good quality ingredients. The sirloin steak was very good! The room we stayed in was recently renovated and very nice. Even though the place is close to the road, we didn't experience much noise from it. Breakfast was amazing! Very nice products, everything plenty available and great service all along. We would definitely come back.

Perfectly OK food, clearly home made and I so wanted to love this place, but so let down on the details. If you're going to have piped music, and your speakers cut out every few notes, then do something about it........If you are aiming for the higher end pub food market, then more than one veg is normal with a lump of (nice) lamb. It all feels a bit basic, and with a bit more thought this could be really good.Until then, I'd skip it.

Visited the Roebuck today for a family lunch, the pub is in a lovely setting and is itself a very interesting building, if a little garishly decorated for my taste. Most of the party ordered Sunday lunch of varying kinds - rather disappointing despite the giant Yorkshire pudding. All the vegetables were strangely tasteless, the meat sparse and a bit tough and a meagre portion of gravy though more was made available when requested. The roast potatoes were clearly reheated and also rather tasteless and tough. The meal was somewhat redeemed by the puddings which were tasty. I wouldn't go here again

I looked forward to trying out this pub, as I live locally and took my partner and daughter for a birthday meal. The pub is beautiful- if you are just going for a drink, it's cosy, interesting and stylish. The staff are pleasant and friendly. However, I can't recommend the food. The portions aren't generous but the meals didn't seem fresh either. For a minimum of £12 a meal it's definitely overpriced. It was a quiet Wednesday but there's too much on offer for it all to be fresh to order. We ordered a burger which smelt off (and although offered an alternative my partner, who is a chef, couldn't face eating anything then) a duck breast which was underwhelming -I'm not a confident cook but even I could have made it better, and my daughter thought the sausages were a bit pink. At the time I thought she was just being over fussy but she was sick this morning (36 hours later) and I am not sure if that was the cause or not. We did complain at the time (which I can't remember ever having done before) and we weren't charged for the burger or child's meal. Shame as the pub is just what I like but I certainly won't be eating there again.

The Half Moon Publocation-iconDitchling RoadBritish

Looking at the website of the Half Moon the menu looks good - more gastro-pub; however the reality is different. We were a party of eight and our lunch-time meal of two courses took 2.5 hours due to slow service. Also, with respect to service, on arrival the barmaid only served us seven drinks for eight people who had all ordered drinks. My glass of Rioja was £7.60 which seemed excessive. There was no sea-bass available, so I took the substitute of salmon which proved to be a small portion for which the charge was £18! Also, for all eight of us the main course was not hot enough. I had a cheesecake desert but it had little resemblance to a cheesecake and the honeycomb stick was so hard I risked breaking a tooth on it.

Very disappointed after a 20k hike to be told at 11:30 on a sunny Saturday that the cafe was not offering food. Apparently they had a busy morning and no food was available, not even sandwiches or cake. Not helpful when you are walking and 10k from the next stop. Best we could get was a chocolate bar. Poor.
