I live in Ballater, and this is my favorite cafe for day or evening . Nice outside area and classy inside. The Gavinia is very friendly and helpful.

We had light snacks/drinks on two afternoons. Luckily weather was good and we used outdoor space which was great. We tried different foods both times and have to say it was great. Service was good and staff very attentive and takes care of your requests. I hope they update their location on google maps as they have moved to new location just nearby. We saw a board on bridge street and found this place. Definitely we will come back if we visit Ballater again.

After so many Scottish breakfasts and rich seafood on our our Scottish holiday, I’d been looking for a while for somewhere that would serve me some lovely fresh, tasty sour dough toast with avocado - luckily we found Rock Salt and Snails! My sour dough, avocado and pesto breakfast with a coffee was excellent. The two twins serving us were delightful and this place was a real find.

The team were so accommodating to provide us with a last minute booking for 9. Menu has something for most tastes and ages, exquisitely located near banks of river Dee. Ideal location for ballater - standout location for its forward-thinking, contemporary bistro-style affair. Accommodating with lovely children - all ideal if you fancy a quiet drink at the bar as well We returned the following evening for a terrace drink to enjoy the sunset (note: Cali an inn doesn’t have licence without food). Right beside the river so can enjoy a leisurely stroll afterwards, thanks to davinia and team

A firm favourite whenever we are visiting Ballater. Whether its for coffee, lunch or now an evening meal we have always been impressed. Staff friendly and professional which in these very challenging times for small hospitality outlets is particularly notable. New addition of evening menu is very welcome but booking necessary.

My goats' cheese salad was fine - interestingly varied ingredients and not ungenerous though some of the leaves were a tiny bit tired. ( l really wanted quiche but they had sold out. Ah well, l suppose Ballater is at the end of a very long supply chain.)My wife's croque monsieur disappointed her - not 'smothered' in bechamel as promised and on less interesting bread than expected.I was made to jump a number of times by a sudden loud bang from behind the bar, something to do with the coffee machine, l think.Oddly, a procession of staff passed through carrying dishes and seemingly delivering them to tables at the Clachan Grill next door. I could only speculate why, but maybe that is what made the service a bit slow. One really does want to support small businesses that are working hard and which, as here, have only a three-month season in which to recover a year's costs, but there is an onus on them to deliver what they promise.

They just moved around the corner but still as amazing as ever. Looking fantastic in there, great decor. Popped in unwittingly on their soft opening day but you wouldn’t know it, they are on top of everything and running smoothly. Highly recommend the mini Victoria sponge - best I’ve ever had. We passed this cafe yesterday evening, loved the smell as we walked by and said so to the ladies. We checked the website and noted an opening time of 10am. We wandered by around 10.50 and were told to come back at 11am. We did so to find all outside tables full and only 1 left inside. My husband was told 'We'll come to you' We waited for almost 20 minutes before anyone spoke to us again. Croissant and coffee were brilliant but wouldn't go back because of the poor, arrogant service. Ps they didn't take our contact details

We continued on to Ballater where we came across this great welcoming pet friendly eatery. The quality of the food is very good with great options available on the menus. I opted for the fish goujons on ciabatta while my wife had the chicken leek and ham pie. All the food was superb and this is far more than a cafe. We were recommended to visit by friends so thought we would give it ago. Having been advised that it was table service, told to help ourselves to menus and pointed in the direction of a very visible table we then proceeded to wait for in excess of 15 minutes without so much as an acknowledgement from even one of the numerous members of staff who passed us. As the clock ticked our conversation soon changed to whether we were prepared to spend our money in a place we were made to feel so unwelcome........ so we left.

Very slow service. Dog sniffing around us whilst we tried to eat which I didn't like at all. Don't expect a shaggy dog rubbing against me whilst eating my food. The cakes we ordered were NOT FRESH by days. Scone was so stale it was inedible and the brownie was clearly not fresh either. Our coffees weren't hot and no diet drinks either for my diabetic mother. Pie was average and a tad dry. The couple on the next table left their scone and I overhead her saying her coffee was luke warm. At these prices I expect a fresh cake and a hot coffee . Never again. Plenty other coffee shops in Ballater charging way less for bigger fresher cakes at less a price. "Bean For Coffee" has tremendous home baking and homemade pies. I won't be back after trying this place a few times.

We three arrived late, close to three pm and found this gem packed with locals and were told immediately it might be an hour wait for lunch. Thankfully it was half that, but this is one popular place! Our college aged daughter ordered a panini she deemed outstanding. I loved my Heidi, a pot pie with sweet potatoes as it’s main ingredient. The pastry is simply delightful with multiple layers. It’s served with a tossed salad and small pan fried potatoes well seasoned. My vanilla latte was perfection as well. My husband ordered and devoured the perfect ham and cheese sandwich served with salad and sliced carrots, confiscated by our daughter. His freshly brewed American coffee and a huge side of the yummy potatoes topped him off. With plenty of time to study all the assorted desserts on display, we took three ample slices of lemon cheesecake home for a later bite. Just bliss... This is a terrific restaurant with kind staff. Highly recommended!

I was in at a time with about 5 other customers and there was a bit of confusion with our order. We had to tell a second waitress what filling we were after in our paninis. I assume the member of staff was maybe new so that’s ok. I had a chicken, mozzarella and cranberry panini. Due to the thickness of the bread used. The heat hadn’t fully transferred through. Leaving the cheese unmelted. No real issue just some constructive criticism. It was however tasty with a side of salad, crisps and cous cous. The Homebake Fig and plum cake was pricey at £2.50 per slice but tasted really good and was moist.

We had a lovely lunch. Everyone was very happy with their choices. Our group of 5 enjoyed paninis, salad, and the kid meal. The paninis were served with couscous, salad and crisps(potato chips).

Great choice of scones, cakes and fancy pieces which were just what was needed after a day's cycling. Lovely coffee and real tea ( no teabag) also impressed.

My wife and another couple stayed two nights in Ballater. We very much enjoyed this coffee shop and its outdoor seating. WiFi also worked well, as our AirBNB did not have Internet connectivity. And... there were no snails!

A very pleasant and relaxed lunch in a truly café environment, did not have snails on the menu but lots of interesting and mainly simple dishes, well worth a visit and truly informal.

Visited Betty's a few times since moving to Blackburn last year. We love this place! Great pub grub food, always tasty food and decent portions. The Sunday roast is honestly the best I've ever had from a restaurant - meat and trimmings cooked to perfection! The staff are always lovely too!

Booked a table with family to celebrate a special occasion, dissapointed with what we got. The choice's on the menu was adequate for what we wanted, unfortunately when it arrived the quality and presentation was poor. The food reminded me of fast food van quality, not what I expected from a restaurant. The drinks options, beer and wine, was not great either. The staff were pleasant but I will not be back, not value for money.
