As there is no mention that I can see on TA, be advised this place was closed down by Hillingdon Council as they found it was staffed by illegal immigrants living above the restaurant...!!

We have been visiting this restaurant on a fairly frequent basis for a number of years but have noticed that recently the business seems to be on decline, with fewer customers every time we visit and staff being unfriendly. To my horror I have discovered that they have recently had their licence revoked as a result of employing illegal staff. They state on the door that you can bring your own alcohol with a corgage charge. Also their stars on he door rating is zero.Oh what a pity that such a vibrant restaurant now finds itself on the brink of closure, however, I for one will not be going back now I know the circumstances.

visited 19/4/19 around 8.30 pm, all other restaurants and pub restaurants completely full, roc totally empty, so in we went. seated in chairs like something out of a dolls house, crazy low. ordered a la carte, simple stuff with 2 fried rice. food arrived about 5 mins later and dumped on table by disinterested waitress. now we found out why empty when everyone else rammed with customers. 2 luke warm lumps of i assume rice which was could only be broken up with difficulty. when tasted didnt bother and left in dishes. main courses prawn kung po and a chicken dish eatable, but inferior to iceland frozen version, and not sure about prawns. ate some, asked for bill, pointed out rice to older lady waitress. she inspected and judged ok, maybe they had served too much she said. i asked if food was fresh cooked and she said yes, which was obviously not true, about rice at least.paid overpriced bill and left.as curious i looked at hillingdon food hygiene rating website today and saw last rating for 23 feb 19. check it out.

Returned for a family meal. Last visited seven years ago! Not disappointed. Seven of us greeted warmly. Decided on a set meal with some extras. Really nice food, lovely genuine staff we were there for three and a half hours! Because we were so relaxed and enjoying the evening. Will definitely be returning and will try some of the less common dishes. Visited Saturday 16th March.

So disappointing. This was once a favourite restaurant. It was a bit dilapidated, chairs uncomfortable, but food was good. It changed hands and service was slow, food not quite so good. Haven’t been there for ages so when we saw the place had been completely refurbished we thought to give it another go and this was my birthday treat. The refurbishment focused on the large bar that now takes up most of the main room. The restaurant area feels like an afterthought. Black ceiling. Stark off-white walls. The lighting is cold and the three rings of light in the window are a pain for anyone facing that way. The restaurant used to be split with a fish tank in the centre wall. Now it is just a wall and the smaller sider looks forgotten.I am guessing this is supposed to look modern – it just looks cold and dingy – think cupboard or prison. But the chairs had changed which could surely only be a plus?. Not so. The new chairs are awful. They are so low that all of our party were taken by surprise when sitting down. Added to that they tilt you back as though in readiness for a dental examination – hardly the position you want to be in to eat (unless I guess if you have trouble with noodles and chopsticks and you want to dangle them above your head). The only plus sign re: the chairs was the amusing effect they had when people rose at the end of the meal – all found themselves walking in a bow-legged fashion from the strange seating angle, and that was at least entertaining. As a token gesture towards the festive season, a sad Christmas tree stood inside the door with a few blue lights on it and a red thing on the top. And that was that. As my daughter said, 'a travestree'.So did anyone enjoy the evening? Well yes, it appeared that the waiter did. He and his colleagues stood chatting and laughing at the bar while the waiter swigged drink from a can – very professional. And to add to this tableau of fine dining, someone decked out like a fisherman, with an apron, rubber gloves, we think wellies and a bucket hat kept marching in and out.Roc Cottage used to be very unusual in that they would give some of their dishes a Christmas theme at this festive time of year. No so now. Only the à la carte menu was available. There were three set menus and to make things easier, we chose one of these. The mixed starter contained 5 items – seaweed, spring rolls, smoked chicken. spare ribs and prawns. This was OK – nothing special and certainly not well presented. There was a ton of smoked chicken which looked as though it had been dumped on the platter. Then came the duck which was fine. The mains were again nothing special. We opted for sizzling fillet steak rather than the chilli beef that was listed. This was served as 4 chunks of meat on top of vegetables – impossible to cut with a blunt knife and with chopsticks – ‘you’re having a laugh’ (favourite phrase of a late special friend) would be appropriate. And we had just begun eating this course when the manageress came up and told us that if we wanted anything else we had to order now, as the kitchen was going home. Given the price of the food and the fact that this was not mentioned when we booked, we were not pleased. Our table was booked for 7.00pm so we were not late diners. We went without. The final word belongs to the manageress – or at least that is what I supposed her role to be. She has been there for a long while – long before the restaurant changed hands. She used to be really friendly and chat to all the customers – now she behaved as though she didn’t recognise us. We can only think that she was embarrassed by the down turn in quality of this once good eaterie. We won’t be returning.

The food was really nice at The Roc Cottage but the waiter needs to learn some manners. He didn’t have any personality or know how to speak to customers and to be fair there wasn’t many people in there. We have been there before it was refurbished and it now needs a bit of something to make it welcoming. So yes change your staff and the decor and oh yes change the tablecloth after the customers have finished please too. Very dissapointed and I can see it closing which would be a shame considering the food is really nice. Customer service needs to be introduced to the staff!

I have been reading reviews and decided to make my own mind up on this restaurant. Firstly how anybody can say in their reviews that the staff are rude or that the service is not good, I cannot believe this, as tonight all staff could not be more accommodating, no rush, we were told in fact to take our time ordering. Perhaps we were lucky with the service, but I cannot see how the polite attentive staff could be anything other than pleasant. The food was pretty good, loved the ribs, salt and pepper squid, lemon chicken as highlights, the only one thing I thought could be better was the chicken satay, too large and the peanut sauce was too too much and too runny, but we ate it all !! The decor and ambiance I loved. Value for what we had I thought was fine and the 10pc service charge was very good as with some places it is 12.5pc. All in all a good evening, would have been five stars if they could add soft shell crabs to the menu or tempura prawns !! We will come back.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We have been coming to this restaurant for years. The place is well overdue a re-furb and it is too bright and quite basic, with dreadful chairs that are really uncomfortable, but the food was excellent. Lots of favourite Chinese dishes, and some unusual takes on dishes that were the restaurant’s own. Then just over a year ago it changed hands. The menu doesn’t look very different at first sight (and some of the front of house staff are the same). The food however is duller and not up to previous standards. It is also much pricier and less friendly. We ate in on a weekday and it was SLOW. Three tables and we waited ages. (The first time we came here after it had changed hands, the service was so slow that they gave us free wine and by the time the duck arrived we were hammered and thinking it was time to leave – it didn’t seem possible that we had hardly started the meal as two hours had passed. However, they were new management then ……)This time we ordered from the ‘Eat as much as you like’ menu, though this is now the ‘Eat as much as you like, with many provisos’ menu.Firstly you can only order 5 dishes to start with. That is OK for us, but for a larger group restricting we think. Then you can only reorder certain dishes ie. the cheaper ones. The menu never allowed for you to take home anything that was left and I guess that is fair enough, as if you had the will you could order tons and then take it all away, but now they have added a new rule. Eat all of every dish or you pay the full price for any dish that you don’t finish. Frankly that is over the top – yes some people will take advantage of an eat as much as you like deal, but most will order what they think they will enjoy. Sometimes maybe your appetite isn’t as big as usual (especially if you have become tired through waiting too long), other times maybe the dish isn’t good. Either way this is too rule bound for us.Will we go back ? No. The decider for us was their meanness. The menu was £20 per head. We ordered a few starters, some duck and one soup. These took so long to come that by the time came to order main courses we were really too tired. We ordered a couple of dishes and rice and we asked if you could have a curry sauce for our daughter. Yes, but we had to pay extra (£2.80) as this wasn’t on the’ eat as much as you like’ menu! (As my husband says, we should have ordered the vegetable curry from the ‘Eat as much as you like’ menu, and asked to have it without the vegetables.)I think they should add another rule. If they don’t serve you within 15 minutes of your order going through, they should start contributing towards your bill – say £1 for every minute you wait after that…..

The Singapore noodles were somehow "fresher" and had a bigger spice flavour but less heat; the smoked shredded chicken was crisper but otherwise seemed the same; and the pak choi in oyster sauce (always a huge favourite) was lovely as usual. We went for the buffet option, where we chose from an extensive menu and was brought as much as we wanted to the table. The food was absolutely delicious, every dish - and we have been to many other Chinese restaurants! Anything we wanted was provided for - satay chicken without the sauce, chow mein without the veg etc. and they were more than happy to accommodate all our requests. I went there with my boyfriend recently for the first time and we were very disappointed and will not be returning. When we turned up on a Saturday evening, the tables were mostly empty, and the waiter seemed totally uninterested in giving us a table and made a big thing about fitting us in. At no point whilst we were there for the next couple of hours did it get more than half full. The service wasn't particularly friendly and we didn't feel welcome. We were distinctly unimpressed with the food that followed. We had bang bang chicken as one of the starters, and this seemed to be made from economy peanut butter and reconstituted "chicken". I have tasted better chicken nuggets from a budget fast food place. We also had crab meat soup and that seemed to have been made from the sea food sticks that you can buy in packets from a supermarket. The mains were bland, in fact so bland I can barely remember what we ordered. The best thing about the meal was the still bottled water.

I visited here as a party of 10, all of us ate from the 'special offer' menu and shared the mixed starter which was generally tasty but disappointingly the ribs and satay I was looking forward to were each somewhat dry and lacking in flavour. The smoked chicken and prawns were very tasty indeed. 'Bang bang' chicken was pretty weird, it tasted like a partially thawed frozen meal.We moved on to a duck course and the waiters ensured we were kept topped up with hot pancakes and extra sauce so we could mop it all up. Can't fault the service. We ordered a real variety of mains, my char siu pork was excellent and tried a few others that were equally as good.So why 2 stars? Well, of 10 diners 9 felt quite ill the following morning and 2 of those decidedly so. Nobody was drinking heavily; clear heads all round but badly knotted stomachs. Too much of a coincidence to forgive or chalk up as a fluke.

I base my view on two visits: two people in October 2014; five people in December 2014. Has a bargain price eat-as-much-as-you-want menu with plenty of choices, thus ideal for a group. All dishes selected are cooked freshly for you.We couldn't fault the food at all. Service was prompt and polite. There was only minimal delays despite there being two other larger groups present. An a la carte menu is also available. I was surprised and annoyed to see two adverse reviews on this site (they only have good reviews elsewhere). Some people seem to expect too much and should look elsewhere and pay easily twice as much. This place may not be fancy but it is more than adequate and in our book represents GOOD VALUE.

I have NEVER left a review before and I have eaten out for many years, so this shows just how TERRIBLE this restaurant is and if I could give 0 out of 5 I would do! To start the decor is very dated and I personally judge a restaurants kitchen on the cleanliness of its loo's - If they keep their loo's clean then I expect they will keep their kitchen clean (that’s just my rule)... The loo's were dated and disgusting, the smell in the gents was rancid and everything I touched was sticky! The customer service is non-existent and the staff (who I believe were the owners) were extremely rude - We ordered from the 'all you can eat' buffet menu at £18 a head. The lady rushed us to order our starters and automatically tried to bring our duck out when we said we wanted to wait a while... For the main my friend ordered a dish with the lady, but asked to have no mushrooms in it, but when it came to the table it had mushrooms in it, so my friend asked for it to be taken back and changed - However to our absolute amazement the man came over and TOLD my friend to just IGNORE the mushrooms and eat the rest!! My friend obviously refused and asked them to change it, which the man unwillingly did, but when he same back to the table he simply slopped it on the table and didn't even have the decency to look at or acknowledge us! The food itself while it was ok, was nothing to write home about and was pretty tasteless. I have to admit I am seriously amazed at how this restaurant has any repeat customers! I will NEVER go back and suffice to say they didn't get a service tip!!

It used to be a popular restaurant due to their speciality dishes such as their smoked chicken etc... However in recent years its has been " hit and miss". I sent my son down there a few weeks ago for a takeaway and the food looked like the dregs of an old chip pot. Either they could not be bothered to create a fresh batch and thought - lets just dish up what we have and see if anyone complains. Or... they have just gone to seed. This used to be a destination eatery for miles around. Such a shame that it has let its standards slip. Also, its not cheap by any means. My advice is to avoid.

This used to be my favourite restaurant and would go regularly. However, recently, it's gone massively downhill. The food used to be very tasty but it's now a bit dull and tasteless. The prawn crackers were stale, the lemon chicken was cold and gelatinous and the Kung po chilli prawns were full of diced cheap vegetables and few prawns. It's a shame as this used to be an amazing restaurant. Oh well

3 of us went in to restaurant for dinner one of us was vegetarian we asked if the we cud have to buffet menu's as our friend only wanted to eat rice to which she rudely said No either everyone have buffet menu or no one! We said £18 for a rice doesn't warrant buffet she then snatched buffet menu away and gave us normal menu we ordered our food and ordered 3 bottles of water when we asked for the bill they charged us £12 for 3 waters we said surely there was a mistake she said no that's the price you pay! We felt very uncomfortable we worked it out that of we'd paid 3 buffet menu that it amounted to the price on the bill £54 would never dream of going in there again disgusting service and very rude owner!!! Boycott this restaurant

Recently moved into the area and after a day trip thought we'd try some Chinese. The starters were quick to come, but for the main course we had to wait for a long time. We ordered some drinks, and were expecting to be offered water, but that didn't come unless we asked. The food was ok...but unfortunately after having a dish (which only I had) I took ill the same night. Will never look at the restaurant again!

The restaurant is quite dated but the tables are well set out which enough space to move around. We opted for the buffet dinner which is a set price and there is a variety of food available. As there was a large group of us, we was lucky enough to share food and try a selection of food. Beware if the food isn't eaten they will charge you.

Was invited for a Sunday buffet - reasonable set price for all you can eat, and the drinks price was average too. Luckily there was parking on a side street. Staff were friendly - it was a quiet day so not busy at all - there were 5 occupied tables. The food was limited, not as much variety as we have experienced elsewhere - however this is a small restaurant. The food was okay I guess, nothing outstanding, nothing bad. For the price I think it was okay - 2 soups, starters included spring rolls/satay chicken strips/ prawn toast/ seaweed/ fried wings. Mains included beef/ chicken/ ss prawns/chicken and noodles/rice. The hot and sour soup, while okay, was more hot than sour, the battered chicken was more batter than chicken. The battered prawns however were tasty as were the chicken wings. Dumplings on offer for desert. . On the positive it is a smallish restaurant, so ideal if you looking for a quiet place to have a bite to eat (on a Sunday that is - cant speak for any other day). Did I enjoy the afternoon? Yes was a nice venue and friendly people. Did it wow me to want to go back imminently? Sadly not.

Ordered one main course and a seafood chow mein. The noodles weren't separating and hard in middle. Undercooked. Main dish ok. I told waiter and he said that's how there cooked. Had the same dish several times before there so I knew they weren't cooked properly. Waiter cleared the table and offered something else. I list interest with his attitude and asked for the bill. Charged us 50% of the meal. We hadn't eaten any so complained that they had also taken our main course so wasn't going to pay for it. Paid for the drinks and was told not to come there again. Plenty more Chinese restaurants in the area.

Eight of us went for an evening meal. Some of us wanted the a la carte, others the set menu. We were told we all had to order from the same menu. We decided on the set menu, which offered all you could eat for about £17 (a discount). This menu said that any uneaten food had to be paid for at full price, and no uneaten food could be taken away.We ordered our starters. The amount that arrived was enormous. Mindful of the small print we struggled through it. Then we ordered our mains - much smaller portions arrived (for 7 of us). The eighth never received her order! No one came to check if we all had what we wanted. We asked for water, but not everyone was given a water glass. The food seemed to take ages to arrive - I wondered why they wouldn't take the mains order at the start of the meal. The starter was tasty, but the chicken in the main chicken dishes was ghastly - it tasted like the cheapest, rubbery sort of chicken - a foul fowl! I think they might be hoping we would fill up on the starter and not have much of the mains?? The ladies' loo was desperately in need of a good clean. It's very local to me, but I'm not planning to go there again.

The quality of the food here is always very good and the service is also good. The portions are quite large but of such good quality that invariably you end up eating too much. Best value is on a Sunday when they have a one price "eat what you can" menu.

Not surprised to see the inconsistent reviews already posted as this has also been our experience in the many (too many to remember) years we have visited Roc Cottage. This review is based on our last visit - quite infrequent now we have moved away from Ickenham - and we enjoyed our meal. At its best, you will not get better Chinese food and service outside of Chinatown. At its worst....you will begrudge paying. I think this is a problem of management and staff turnover as we have seen many staff come and go over the years. But, more importantly, they must keep changing chefs as the menu has not changed in years and we have eaten the same food and found it to be both wonderful and awful on different occassions.

A party of 9 of us to celebrate a 60th birthday. We we welcomed, drinks orders dealt with and then opted for the £16.50 all you can eat menu. This was the usual hors d'ouvres, crispy duck and a selection of dishes to follow. Nothing special on the menu, but the food was superbly cooked, well presented and the service attentive. There are, of course, some dishes not available on this option as is usual, but having done this at a number of Chinese restaurants, can say the food is definitely a cut above. We will be returning although it is some distance to travel and would absolutely recommend to anyone reasonably local.

I have been to Roc Cottage many times, as it is my local Chinese Restaurant. With my husband for anniversaries, with friends for a chat and birthdays too.The service is always friendly and attentive, even when the restaurant is full. The menu is varied and very good in my opinion - they have a special offer on Thursdays, where you can eat as much as you like from a reduced (but still huge) menu, for £16.50 per adult. I always order the Crispy Chilli Beef as it is my favourite, but all of the other mains and sides that I have tried, are very delicious. A meal for two. with a beer each usually comes to around £40, which is very reasonable considering the great service and food.I will return again and again.

Situated near Northwood Hills roundabout, parking was available outside in surrounding streets. On reading the latest disappointing reviews, I thought it can't be that bad, but I was wrong. We ordered the mixed starter which came quite quickly but the food was very salty. After a while we were asked if we ready for the main coarse... which replied that we were. Nothing arrived for a good 20 mins. even after 2 prompts to the waitresses The food described and presented as Chinese but did not taste Chinese. The rice was congealed and sweet ... more like rice pudding. Shame, I was disappointed, they need to up their game to survive Cannesdid .... surfingsyd
