Robins Pie And Mash in Basildon

I was in Basildon to pick up a car after coming down from Raunds Via London. I'm non native country boy and this was my first time in a pie and mash shop. My wife who is originally from Hackney got me into making pie and mash for her so it was nice to have the authentic meal which was really tasty with a nice strong cup of tea served on a nice retro plate. £6 bargin in authentic surroundings. I hope the new shop will have the same fittings, benches and formica tables. As Del boy would say. Luverly jubbley

Got a take away today , for later omg the pies have shrunk, and we had 5 pies and 4 apple pies 1 large liquor and 1 medium one, we never had mash as the mash there Is dreadful 🤮 so we cook our own, and it came to £32 that’s way more than we use to pay, remember it was pies and liquor ONLY, so bye bye Robbins we defo won’t be back 😡

I absolutely love this place. I come as often as I can but I now live up north. When ever I visit the family in Essex. Robins is ALWAYS my first stop and I’m never left disappointed. And like today when I drive home I will be stopping there again for lunch and the to take some back up north with me. Wish they had a shop in northumber but a girl can dream xxx Till next time x

I was shocked at how small the pies were compared to a few years ago. Thick was a take away meal ….. the pies were half the size and hardly any taste or mince in them. Potato wasn’t that great either. Very disappointed!

Had their frozen one tonight and wow that’s enough to put anyone off the famous dish for life. I seriously hope your not serving the same frozen stuff in your restaurants, if you did I’d throw it at you. Completely disgusting and a total discredit to the world famous dish. First of all the mash was lumpy then the sauce was just like stale p.ss. The pastry was passable and the filling was just salty and had no flavour. Seriously if your exporting this stuff do your country proud and don’t just serve sh.t

I just love going here..I always feel a bit guilty ordering the Pies in amounts rather than singularly..April and the Girls are always welcoming and I leave with a belly full of happiness! Morning had 2 pie and 1 mash and liguor here two weeks on the bounce was takeaway my mate bought it for me first time. was so nice I bought for him this Saturday. The stuff was so happy and so friendly calling me hulk Hogan cause I just finished me lockdown workout lol. I am happy my granddaughter loves pie and mash too so off we went for some of the best about the area they was a ten minute wait to get in due to cov19 that's not bad as the staff clean and clear the tables before we go in we both enjoy our meal only down side is that the tea in takeaway cups just not right but can understand this

with the current virus situation and new regulations the restaurant is spotlessly clean,[as it always is]and the seating is well spaced out. there are other items on the menu such as eels and as usual our choice was the pie "n" mash and liquor which was generous in size and cooked superbly.

Ordered for my parents who are in their 80’s. Unfortunately it was 32 minutes late and it was cold and the pie was flat as though it was cooked a good few hours earlier. Called to advise. Was told next order would be of better standard. Not so sure after spending £25 would like to take that risk.....

I would like to Thank Tina during this COVD19 ordering delivery ,when I questioned the delivery for £4 being a 79 yr old high risk person it was immediately cancelled and Thanked her very much ,I ordered frozen pies and liquor after I had put the phone down my son rung me and said I wouldnt mind some cooked Pies and Mash,Liquor now .I rung back and ordered 2 Cooked Pies and Mash with Liquor . Robins Pie & Mash sells the most delicious pie & mash in Essex. It always has a queue which goes way outside the door and it is almost a necessity of the residents of Romford. It's relatively cheap (around £7 for a double pie & mash with liquor/gravy) and the supply never runs out. If you don't particularly fancy eating in, they also do takeaways so you can warm up and heat up at home (which tastes just as delicious). The inside decor is exactly what you would expect of an old, east end, pie & mash shop with the standard tables and chairs. It's not pretending to be anything fancy but it doesn't need to. The ladies that serve behind the counter are always quite friendly (but you can sometimes catch them on a bad day - then you might have a different experience). I regularly eat here for tasty pie and mash. I’m from East London and have pretty much been brought up on pie and mash, and Robins is most definitely my favourite outside of London.

Good old fashioned pie mash shop. tasty pies, good mash and good liquor. For those interested in the construction, the pies had good crusty tops and soft bottoms. The filling is well browned and seasoned so if you're one of those who prefer your filling dry, pink or grey and totally bland because that's what you were unfortunate enough to be weaned on as a child then these aren't the pies for you.Pies are on the small/shallow side compared to some places but also the same size as many other places so not really a point to grumble about.Overall good experience, looking forward to visiting again.

I’ve been using this shop since my 20s, I’m now 51. It has always been consistently excellent and now come here with my daughter who’s in her 20s. She loves it too. I can’t recommend this shop enough. Although the lady that serves tends to ask you quickly what you want then asks you several times after that.Its actually quite funny and quirky. Love this place.

I was brought up on Robins pie and mash. Basildon and occasionally Romford. I love pie mash and liquor and so does my husband and our son. We no longer live in England so when we visit we always ensure we come to Robins for lunch. I stopped eating meat a year ago so I tried the vegetarian pie and it was good. I’m glad I don’t have to miss out on the tasty pastry. Always great service and smiles from the very friendly staff.

Best Pie Mash this side of Canning Town. Reminds me of when I was a kid. Took Mum with me and she thoroughly enjoyed it.

Always fresh and tasty, they dont mind you asking for well done pies like I like them, always good meat no gristle super old fashioned taste and of course liquor made the propper East End way.

Robins is timeless and authentic. The taste and textures of the pies, mash and liquor take me back in time each occasion I dine. If only the price was the same as in the 70’s, I would eat there everyday.

We mostly have take away, which is never a problem with the chatty and smiling welcome from the staff. As we do not live far away, we either cannot wait to eat it straight away or we heat it up later, to eat with our granddaughters or other family members when they are visiting. Oh YES ! nearly forgot, the pie and liquor are lovely.

Lovely pie and mash, hot eels too, reasonably priced. Tastes just like it should, the pies have a good amount of filling, didnt see any gristle in the meat. Mash is scraped onto the side of the plate like it should and and good amount of liquor. The shop looks clean and staff are pleasant. Highly recommended.

What can I say it's a very tasty nice pie ma's and liquer shop. I've been going here for years.its opposite the market in basildon town centre. They make a lovely cup of tea too.

Been going here for years now. You can't beat it. Everything about this food is just delicious. Please please visit. So many shops leaving Basildon due to rent prices going through the roof. This is one shop we need to stay. Please visit . The food is well worth it

This would be my 'death row' last meal. Authentic pie, mash and liquor east end style. I'm used to Kelly's on the Roman Road but this was just as good. The lovely blonde lady with the updo was very friendly and the service is always good. Highly recommend.

Authentic Pie 'n Mash from Robins who know their stuff. Always takes me back to my childhood being treated to the same in East Ham or Upton Park. The quality of Robins is consistant and you can always be assured of what you get. However, the prices continue to creep up making this a treat rather than a staple.

My visit to Essex from Dorset was only enhanced by my visit to Robin's. Couldn't fault it. Nice staff too.

I'm dairy intolerant and also allergic to onions and garlic, this restaurant is gluten and dairy free. They help with all dietary requirements and all of the staff are very knowledgeable. pie & mash its an old Londoners food You get pie mash & green gravy------ we call liquor you must have non condiment brew vinegar salt and white pepper.its quite bland without these.Last week I went into Robins in the market had double pie mash liquor which was very nice but.Its getting over priced at £7.50.You can get a mixed grill at the local cafes for the same price .Robins and other pie shops lower you prices you will sell more I know your over heads are high but were it was an every day meal its turning into once in a blue moon treat when you have family with you.

This is a traditional East End pie and mash shop with a few extras. The standard offering is meat pies with mash and liquor or stewed eels with mash and liquor or a combination of the two. Thet also serve tea, coffee and cold drinks. Additional to the East End fare is a small selection of dessert. The food will never win a Mitchelin star, but if you are from the East End of London and raised on pie and mash from a young child - like me - it will bring back memories.

As a Scot I haven't really bought into pie and mash culture. Definitely a local thing, but I wanted to try it to see what all the fuss is about. Robins has been around for over 80 years so I reckoned must have honed their product by now. On arrival you are served by a lovely lady dressed in a shining white uniform. The place itself spotless with photos from yesteryear placed throughout. The tables are all bolted to the ground and sit you bolt upright. Can be a challenge in itself. The product for me is a bit underwhelming but in my mind I had conceived something a bit more interesting. A basic meat and gravy pie, with a dollop of mash spread on your plate with a spatula plus the insipid liquor (watery parsley sauce). If it's what you like you will be very pleased. If like me you had somehow imagined even a bit of butter in the mash, then you might feel differently. Clearly providing a product that people like and demand as the place was full when I arrived.

Do luv my pie mash and been eating it since the 1950s. Robins do serve a nice bit of grub and it does taste very much like how pie mash should be. The pies are traditional & brings back memories of how they used to taste. Can now only eat double pie & mash with liqueur, pepper & vinegar when back in the 60s I could eat a treble. Anyway the pie mash here is good.

Robin's in Basildon is the same management as Robin's in East Ham which was my local pie and mash shop when I lived in London and the Basildon shop is just as authentic and absolutely lovely.The other pie and mash shops in the area can't hold a candle to it!!!

We were delighted with our choice of Robins. Excellent home made pie and mash, very reasonably priced, lovely staff, quick service. My husband had never tasted pie and mash and is a fussy eater but he reluctantly was willing to "give it a go". He thoroughly enjoyed it and although he is a "fish and chip" man he said that on his next visit to Southend he would certainly choose Robins pita and mash rather than fish and chips. When in Southend do not miss this one.Lil

Everyone was raving about this Pie mash shop, well the crust of the pies were burnt and despite saying they use real beef, they were swamped with gravy, the potatoes were salty and I mustn't have any salt. The liquor was more green than a traditional liquor although there was plenty of spuds it didn't do much for me, I was brought up on Cooke, Nathans and a few other well known pie shops, and at 70 years old. so for me this was jus an average Pie mash shop and not to rave about.
