The staff were friendly and very efficient the service was also slick and nothing was too much trouble. Even ordering a taxi for us.

I wouldn't return to this restaurant, the staff were miserable & abrupt. The food was tasteless & bland but to make matters worse my husband found a hair in his meal, we complained to a waiter & he rushed off to the kitchen & never returned. No one came to apologise or investigate our complaint! I brought it up again to another waiter who brought the bill & he said there was no manager on the premises & the owner was upstairs busy & not to be disturbed!

Its been a few years since eating at The Riverside because access became an issue which at the time was disappointing .We loved the food and not been able to get up the stairs was frustrating .So when we heard they'd move we took the opportunity to re-visit hoping it would be as good as the" old Riverside " .Well in actual fact its even nicer the staff were so friendly and welcoming .the one waiter even spent time taking photos for us .The food was a little more expensive but what do you expect after a couple of years . But we felt a was better value now because the portions and quality was far superior (which I didn't think possible) And as senior citizens these are the two main things we look for when dining out .The other things that impressed us was the design and décor .very elegant and the fact you could see the kitchen ,which looked incredibly clean and well organized ,We had the Pork with cashew nuts ,Lemon Chicken. Crispy Chilli Beef and Singapore Chow main and Lettuce Leaves with mince pork. Why so much for two ? so we could have a dogy bag to take home for lunch tomorrow lol It was so tempting to eat it all in one go but to bigger portions .

We were walking to the game and my friend’s young infant was desperate for the toilet. We politely asked the bouncers if he could use the facilities. We were abruptly told ‘no’ by the bouncers and treated like second class citizens just because we were football fans. I would like to remind the owners that the previous businesses have struggled in this location and word of mouth will be the essential to the survival of the restaurant in these testing trading environment. The way we were treated reflects badly on the restaurant and having 3 bouncers on the door does not potray a welcoming atmosphere.

We booked a table for 8 pm last night and ordered the set meal for four. It was fabulous plenty of it and great choice. However, our experience was marred by just one waiter. He was rushing us to finish our main course kept saying the the kitchen closes at 930! So we informed him we had finished then at 935 he said kitchen closed you can only have cold dessert s , included in our price was desserts hot or cold . We asked to have the hot dessert and his attitude stank starting to shout at us the kitchen closed walked off in huff saying he would see manager. He came back saying they would have to start up all the cookers etc now and it would be 15-20 mins. The desserts were brought out and again were lovely. He came over he said you happy now!!!we said had you told us when we booked the kitchen closed at 930! Which I real is early for a restaurant of this calibre. Things might have been different . This was a birthday celebration and thankfully the food was fab but not the service AND It was only related to one waiter, the rest was polite and lovely . So for that reason I’m sadly out.

1st I’ve ever been to the Riverside Cantonese & I was impressed by the interior. Nice roomy place with a large opening into the kitchen so you can see the chief cooking. There was 5 of us so we all ordered a starter each with an extra 1 so had plenty of choice as we all tried a bit of everything. It was quiet when we went so service was fast. Again ordered 6 meals so we could have a try of everything. Food was lovely & I thought enough for us all but some on our table have large appetites so would have preferred larger portions. Nice choice on the menu but watch the wine list, prices can be expensive. If you only went in for a take away, you need to see the beautiful wall. A wonderful scene which took 8 months to paint as all done by hand, 1 of the staff told me when I queried about it. Gutted I didn’t take any photos but I don’t thing they would have done it any justice. That is worth a trip in anyway.

Whilst visiting Cardiff on business, I picked this place for dim sum on the basis of the reviews on here recommending it. Well either the people that recommend the dim sum here haven’t had good dim sum (and thus have no comparison), or simply have low standards. I on the other hand am a dim sum snob! This was a poor selection, clearly not freshly made, and totally lacking in the quality, flavour and texture of good fresh dim sum. In a word, DISAPPOINTING. Not as bad as some I’ve had which have literally been the frozen dumplings you can buy yourself in a Chinese supermarket, but not really significantly better than that to even score 4 out of 10. If you’re not at all fussy about your dim sum or have never eaten it before, then you’ll probably find it ok. But if like me, you know of only a select few good dim sum places in London, Manchester and Birmingham, I was hoping the Capital of Wales might have something on a par... but if so, THIS IS NOT IT!

Finding a fresh tasting Chinese where food is cooked well has been a difficult journey here in this neck of South Wales. However Riverside has come up trumps. We started with roast chilli and salt ribs and Wun Ton soup. The ribs were wonderfully seasoned, and the soup was light, fresh, with crispy chinese leaf swimming with won ton balls, all cooked just right. These appertisers were followed with roast duck, egg fried rice, chilli salt squid and egg fried rice, all of which was full of flavour. Finished off with a lightly crisp hot banana fritter and ice cream, and sips of jasmine tea. All in all a really enjoyable meal, reasonably priced including the two beers. At last a chinese in Cardiff to visit again.

I visited to celebrate a friends birthday. The restaurant was full and noisy when I arrived which seemed fine. During the evening though, crowds were singing and then moved on to standing up chanting. They had been to football. There could be no conversation at our table. It was ridiculous to expect us to endure that kind of noise and behaviour in a reasonably high priced restaurant. Worse when I spoke to the manager and expressed my concern he told me that it was Christmas and the tables had been booked for several months. He was unsympathetic. I have been going to the Riverside Cantonese for 20 years and have always praised the restaurant and recommended it but I don’t think I’ll ever go there again.

As quite a foodie myself, plus being Chinese, Riverside Restaurant is THE restaurant I would go to whenever I go for Chinese. Apparently I'm not alone on this...I've been living in Cardiff for over 10 years. I did miss it when I wasn't in Cardiff for a while - realised how luck I had been. Honestly, the dim sums, particularly the prawn steamed rice rolls and the radish pastry, are the best, if not better than those in Hong Kong. It's always been a disappointment whenever I go else in the UK for dim sums. We (my British husband and I) are really glad that they have now moved to this new location, with parking on site. We have now decided that we will go back for our Chinese New Year Eve dinner. Looking forward to some freshly steamed sea bass with ginger and spring onions...

Eleven of us recently visited the Riverside Cantonese at their new premises for a family birthday celebration. We were seated in the waiting area and bought drinks at the bar before being seated at our table. We all ordered the set meal for £24 and started with prawn crackers, bbq spare ribs and lettuce wraps. The ribs were gorgeous, fell off the bone and the sauce was to die for. The lettuce wraps were average and the prawn crackers were nice and light. For mains we shared crystal prawns, fillet steak Cantonese style, kung po pork, special stuffed duckling, special fried rice, monks vegetables and chicken with cashew nuts which we swapped as nobody likes lemon chicken. The prawns were delicious and the steak was enjoyable but was served in big chunks rather than being sliced or cut smaller. The kung po pork was nice and spicy but the pork was slightly dry. The chicken and cashew nuts lacked in colour and presentation (very dull and looked boring) and the chicken was also slightly dry. The monks vegetables were flavourless. The special fried rice was nice. The restaurant was busy when we arrived and tables were being cleared and filled almost straight away which is a good sign. The service was average (had to ask for one of our dishes as they had failed to bring it to the table and had to ask for the bill twice). Having said that the manager brought out a birthday cake that we had brought with us and provided us with free coffee and Chinese tea.Overall it was an enjoyable experience but perhaps I'll try the Happy Gathering next time.

We were in Cardiff on a Monday, looked for a good Chinese, this place was recommended as close (walking) and good for vegetarians. Firstly they have moved. A further 15 minutes out of the town centre with no clue on the door as to where. We were guided by a local takeaway, should have had their food. Ok, we are veggie, so tried the veggie menu as you would expect a balanced best they had to offer for the price. Firstly bland bland bland.....secondly no chance to relax, constant pressure to order and then eat quickly. Wine poured constantly, but water they won’t give you a carafe, a glass and they top you up on a whim.....Very disappointed, Chinese as I remember it in the 80s, water chestnuts and carrots in everything, bland all the same in every dish flavors. Msg rules.

I've visited the Riverside Cantonese since 1983. It was always a "must do" night out and worthy of its reputation. HOWEVER our latest visit to the new premises, last night, was very disappointing and one we will not be repeating, given the better alternatives available in Cardiff. We ordered the "Riverside Chef's Special" for £35 per head. Our experience included: We were told there were no deserts, of any description, available, even though they were included in the "Riverside Chef's Special" choice. How difficult is this? Food warmers were not provided, alllowing the food to go cold before it was eaten. Other tables near us all had food warmers. Food portions for the lettuce wraps and hot hors d'oeuvres did not allow even portions. (e.g. 8 prawn toasts and 8 lettuce leaves for 5 people) Portions were mean, given the £35 price tag. (e.g. 2 king prawns each with the Szechuan King Prawns)Special fried rice lacked the density of additional ingredients like pork and Prawns, than was the case on previous visits. After being provided with imperial mints, staff appeared to have forgotten the China tea and coffee, included with our choice and had to be reminded. The decor was clean and neat but the acoustics were poor, because of echoing, making it difficult to hear conversation at the table. There are no soft furnishings to absorb sound. The website, for weeks, has given little information and does not offer a menu. On a positive note, the staff were helpful and pleasant. Given the positive comments we made to our guests before the visit, the experience was somewhat disappointing and embarrassing. It wouldn't be difficult to rectify the problems, but if management can't even organise simple deserts, I fear the problem is much more deep rooted.

Excellent Chinese restaurant. Food is authentic and really well done. No different to Hong Kong as the chefs are from Hong kong.

We booked a table for 6pm as there was nothing available any later. It was busy when we arrived and it just got busier. Atmosphere was brilliant, new venue is wonderful. Open plan, view of kitchen. Same attentive staff, same menu. Food was excellent, really tasty. I would recommend booking. We can't wait to go back!

Came here for a meal where there was 9 of us. The food was really nice when it came which was pleasing and the staff were really friendly. However the time between starter and main was very long however which was frustrating! This place has a car park which is a bonus when it comes to restaurants in this area.

We chose this restaurant because it has a car park and is easily accessible with no stairs. We knew the food would be good and we were not disappointed. Whilst the space is large and the interior design contemporary, it has been fitted out with quality furniture and soft lighting. The kitchen is on view and everything looks spotlessly clean. The service was excellent. My only reservation is that, because it is so big and open, the acoustics make it difficult to hear conversation across the table. This is especially the case when there are a few larger groups in the restaurant.

Wonderful food, lots of nice flavours, nice size portions. Friendly staff. Nice new clean restaurant. Only reason I gave this place a four is because food took a little longer than expected to arrive and at the end of our meal I think we were the only table they didn’t give hot towels to.

We ordered the set menu, the food was plentiful and well cooked, however the fillet steak dish with onions and the king prawn dishes were both disappointing and tasteless!! The bill with drinks and tip came to £350 so NOT a cheap place to dine, overall an average dining experience, would NOT rush back or recommend.

Visited riverside Chinese restaurant Saturday 23rd September.First impression as we walked in was it looked beautiful in there. Very well decorated, complete difference from the pub it use to be. There were 12 of us attending for a family birthday so ordered what we thought was a lot to cover us all. Bill being £285 so was not a cheap order. All the meals came out with the rice coming out last for some reason which was extremely strange. The meals that came out were tiny portions. Crispy beef came out with what I could only describe as a child's portion and for some reason a side salad filling up most of the plate. Most meals were of the same size bulked out with veg and hardly any meat. Then came half 8 when the restaurant had booked in 5 tables of doctors who were extremely loud and placed them right by us. Was so loud that we finished our food extremely quickly to leave as non of us could hear any of what the other was saying even when sat next to each other. Advised the staff of this to which they were extremely rude. There were plenty of other places they could have put us. Would not recommend to anyone. Overpriced food, tiny portions, miserable and rude staff.

The Riverside has been the main Cantonese restaurant in Cardiff for many years. Once it was just outside the bus and train station. Now it's nearer the Cardiff City Stadium - but not so close that you would hear the crowd on the night of a match. Now it is at its new location, there is parking and easy access for wheelchairs to add to the excellent and attentive service and the great food.We reserved by email early in the week and increased the size of our party twice - starting with 6 and ending up with 8 - and both times were reassured that it would be fine. It's not something we make a habit of, but didn't feel that we were imposing by making the changes. The interior of the new restaurant is understated but stylish. The kitchen is visible, for people who need to know how their food is being cooked. For the size of room, it was fine - the place was full before we left and, unlike many places I have eaten, not too loud.Thay also managed families with older children(10+) well - something that you would expect a good restaurant to be able to do.And that is the secret to the Riverside - the attentive service. Quiet and efficient. One of our party was vegan and the waiter was able to advise on the 'what' and the 'how' on a table of 8 with a lazy Susan in the middle. So the first hurdle of the night was cleared with aplomb.A meal at a good restaurant leaves you to catch up with what has been happening - our family is doing a lot of things in different directions at the moment, and get-togethers are becoming more infrequent and the more important for that.So it was good to feel that there was space and time to enjoy a meal and enjoy conversation - and the staff are very good at this. Unobrtusive, but always at hand if you need something. It's hard to think of anything negative to say in all the visits I've made. They have all been memorable for different reasons and I would recommend a visitor to Cardiff to make sure that they find it - the old location was on the edge of the centre. The new location is a bit further out, but it won't take long for the taxis to find it - and it's on a main bus route too (the one back to the depot as it happens)The food arrives to a regular beat - and if you sit near the kitchen, the heater lights come up as soon as a dish arrives to be taken to a table - and those lights do flicker on and off throughout. There is a good selection of dishes, starters and mains. You feel like you have plenty of time to mull over a drink and decide what to have. And you can't ask for much more than that really, can you?An enduring gem. Long may it continue!

Having not visited the old restaurant for many years we decided to give the newly relocated Riverside Cantonese a try and are very glad we did. For a Thursday evening there were more than enough busy tables to create a nice atmosphere even when we arrived at 7.30 and when we left an hour later a lot more people had arrived. All our food was delicious - we had pork lettuce wraps and monkfish skewers to start and both were very good. It was obvious from my clear view of the pass that the lettuce wraps are very popular indeed. For mains we had king prawns with black bean sauce (my benchmark dish) and bbq pork with broccoli and special fried rice as sides and it was all delicious. We were defeated by the generous servings and were asked straightaway if we would like to take the left-overs home so got supper for the following day! The restaurant is very nicely decorated, the staff were very friendly and efficient and the car park is a big plus.We are already planning two return visits - one for Dim Sum and one with friends.

Visited here recently!Noticed the menu has been cut drastically - probably to pay for the new premises! No lamb dishes, no crispy duck, no monkfish!Ended up with two king prawn dishes and a beef in black bean sauce. We both agreed the beef was tough!Lacks the atmosphere of the old place and we found it cold and uninspiring!Hope it works out though, as we have used the Riverside for over 35 years!Notice Mr miserable Manager is still there!Much better parking now than the old place, which was a nightmare at times!Best of luck to the new RIVERSIDE!

Attended the new restaurant on a Wednesday evening at 7pm surprised how busy it was. I think this is mainly because of the anticipation of the sparklingly new modern premises. We were served quickly perhaps too quickly as by 7.45 we had finished our meal. Enquired about desserts and informed they did not serve them. Felt it was more like a fast food restaurant and their was no personal touches. Food was average and drinks expensive.

Our family visited the newly refurbished and newly sited Riverside restaurant here for Sunday dim sum. We used to visit the Riverside regularly when I was a child at their Tudor street location. First impressions- lovely layout with parking round the back. Anyone who's ever visited the old location knows parking was always a nightmare!Impeccably designed, everything still smelled 'new'. They were very accommodating considering we hadn't booked and Sundays are always busy as traditionally, that's when Chinese families always go out for Sunday dinner. Food was fabulous, freshly cooked and not too heavy. I always find, dim sum, if not freshly prepared can be heavy and caked in grease but this was not the case. Big portions, very filling and good service to boot- considering we only had an hour as they needed the table back for a pre reserved booking. Although I did enjoy it, I think I may have enjoyed it more, had I not felt so rushed

Came to dine in the new premises at Leckwith for my Mother's birthday - on arrival we were all impressed with the exterior and interior of the restaurant, certainly compared to what it had been before. We were greeted very courteously and shown our, booked, table. The restaurant was quite quiet and we were asked for our drinks order and then our food order fairly quickly. Our starters arrived and it was very enjoyable but as the restaurant started filling up it became apparent that there was inadequate serving staff - three to every 20 people and that's being conservative. After waiting and waiting and trying to be patient for our mains and seeing how hard the staff were working we decided an hour was enough - and seeing people who were seated an hour after us tucking into their main courses we asked what was happening. The waitress apologised and within 10 minutes we had our mains. Upon presentation of the bill we enquired as to the delay to be informed that the kitchen had lost our order. My conclusion to this is that the food is excellent but if they wish to build on their reputation in new premises they need adequate staffing levels as three waiting staff and two chefs was completely inadequate to do their jobs well and so they were making mistakes which made the time for our meal 2/12 hours for a two course meal.

We decided to visit the newly-relocated restaurant having had good experiences at their old premises, and were able to park right outside in the new car park. The staff were lovely and polite throughout, but the rather more expensive menu - which seems to offer less choice than many Chinese restaurants - suggested the dishes might be of a high standard.Having tried most of Cardiff's Chinese restaurants by now, the food here was, unfortunately, pretty boring. The Fillet Steak Cantonese-style consisted of large chunks of beef which weren't as tender as we'd have liked, or in enough sauce to prove tasty. The Chicken with Cashew Nuts and Chicken Curry were acceptable, but lacked real flavour or finesse. For a family of four (two adults and two little ones) the bill came to almost £50, with no starters included. We'd be happy to pay such a price for a top-quality meal, or for a 3-course meal, but this was one course, one beer and three fizzy drinks. The restaurant is nicely decorated, looks impeccably clean, but needs a little more music to create a nicer atmosphere.Unfortunately, we wouldn't rush back to pay such a high price for unremarkable food. Again, there was nothing to 'complain' about as all was acceptable, but the overpriced bill came as rather a surprise and, in all honesty, was not worth the price.

I am convinced this is the best Chinese Restaurant in Cardiff! In terms of food, service and ambience it is top notch. The manager is absolutely fantastic, very friendly and efficient. Food comes quick and the dim sum dishes are really good! Crispy seafood noodles, chilli squid, fried rice, and the duck are excellent. I've never been dissapointed with anything I've had frankly, and I think I must have been here about 100 times! Prices are reasonable too. This restaurant deserves to be in the top 30 best restaurants in Cardiff in Tripadvisor! They used to be on Tudor Street, it was already excellent then, now with the new restaurant near Leckwith it has even better interior ambience to match the amazing food, and parking is no longer a problem at this new premise. I am a happy regular!

Me and my friends came to visit the restaurant like in their closing time already. We entered and ask if they are still open as it is almost midnight. I think most of the food are kept and the stove are off. When we said that it was so sad as we really wanted to have indian food. They immediately accomodated us. They switched on everything and took our orders. The manager and the staff are very friendly and nice. And the foodddddd, it is AMAZING!!!! I’ve been to india couple of times and I can say it is a real homecooked taste, felt like I am literally in India. The restaurant is clean and pleasant. The staff are organized and efficient. Since we really liked the food, the next day we decided to go again and tried the other dishes they have, and guess what? It didn’t disappoint! It is all DELICIOUS! We will definitely come back when we visit Cardiff again. Kudos to the whole team of Flaming Dragon Cardiff.
