Ristorante Villaggio in Cardiff

The last time we went to this place, it was good, but this time the service was more than a bit slow, yet we still had a service charge included on the bill.

Food and drinks were good. Just so others are aware the only downside was the 10% service charge which was quite a lot as there were 9 of us dining. So we ended up paying over £200 for pasta and pizza meals.

Busy Italian restaurant booking advised, this is a statement in itself! Tasty food. Polite staff. Location in Whitchurch village, within Cardiff. They can diversify form couples to very large groups with the same polite manner. All good in my book.

We have been here and to the restaurant in Whitchurch and unfortunately won’t be returning to either venue again. Went with friends mid- week. The pizzas we had weren’t very nice the service was slow. They then added service charge on top for rubbish food and service. We won’t be back.

Didn’t have a good experience, despite booking a table in the main restaurant area our table was in the bar area and we were surrounded by people collecting takeaways and had people constantly walking past us. Pizza was OK, one of the toppings was missing, and they added a service charge to the bill automatically even though there was only two of us.

Turned up without a booking and they still managed to fit us in. We've eaten there and had deliveries before and have never been disappointed. The pizzas on this visit were just perfect.

What a very good night with the family excellent food and excellent friendly service! Highly recommended we will definitely going back and making regular visits! The atmosphere was very good and nothing was a problem for the friendly staff. Very good price as well! KERP THE GOOD WORK UP GUYS!!

We were on a three day beak in the Cardiff area and we discovered this wonderful restaurant on the Monday evening. We had a delicious meal which was tasty and very filling. The atmosphere was really lovely and the staff were friendly and attentive. We enjoyed ourselves so much we booked a table for the next evening. The restaurant is very popular and is often very busy so it's essential that you book in advance. It's good value for money and an all round enjoyable experience.

Lovely food but terrible service. Waiters and waitresses don't smile, have no sense of humour and look overwhelmed.

Haven't been to this restaurant for several years but decided to pop in for lunch with a friend. We weren't disappointed. The food was delicious...I had pasta, my friend had pizza. We also both had Tiramisu which was one of the nicest I have ever had!!! There is also a 20% discount off all food during lunchtime which was an added bonus. Service was great too. It’s deservedly reputable and has a great place in Lakeside too. This place is loud and lively with quick and efficient service and excellent pizza and wine. I would suggest hiding the wizened stregona that stands and growls at arriving customers- there are better looks than this!

Was offered a table for 55 minutes then told they couldn't guarantee we would get our meal in that time as they were serving a large party. So we left. Have eaten at this restaurant for 35 years but no more.

Spent the evening here with daughter who is at university in Cardiff. Walked in on a wet Wednesday evening and the place was heaving ! And I can understand why! The food we both enjoyed was amazing! We had two courses and shared dessert. Was so impressed with the bill too ! Cannot recommend highly enough and hope to be returning soon.

I am a strong believer that judging the book (and the restaurant) by its cover it's an effective system. If you are walking around looking for a restaurant and you come across: a) a clean and well presented eatery, full of seemingly happy customers or b) a joint that looks like a former heroin den, where people inside are clearly more confident with money laundering rather than cuisine, which one would you choose? There are exceptions obviously, but not that many.Thankfully, Pizzeria Villaggio lives up to its promising appearance, revealing itself as a pleasant book with a good cover. The room is a nice place to be, maybe a bit noisy when very crowded. I always appreciate in an Italian restaurant a slightly subtle Italian theme in the decor, something modern without being tacky. The environment must transmit a sensation of comfort and familiarity, not the feeling that you are about to get mugged and stabbed in a Sicilian alley. One little quirk of mine and a life hack which you can thank me later for: don't trust places with a menu that is dirty OR contains spelling mistakes! If the menu is filthy AND full of grammar/translation errors, I strongly suggest you to run because you'll probably spend the next 3 days as a main character of a TV series called “Game of ceramic thrones” (if not slaughtered,chopped up and served to the next round of guests). I mean, if bro-the-restaurant-owner can't be bothered to do a bit of google translate, proofreading or wipe the document that is basically his business card, what can you expect in terms of compliance to HACCP regulations? Villaggio’s menu is nice, correct and solidly based on pizza and pasta. The host flirts a bit with some "britalian" and italian-american classics such as Alfredo, spag bol (existing everywhere in the word BUT Bologna), etc. but I don’t see anything wrong when the demand meets the offer and they “lived happily ever after…”. But let’s move to the money shot: we decided to respect the classics and we went for a combo bruschetta and pizza. I got the roasted pepper and goat cheese because I felt less “vanilla” than my friends who got the tomato and basil one. All very well executed, fast and as expected. The warm goat cheese combined with the red pepper is a love hug, the one you get from your Mum when you finally do something good at school. Minor suggestion: the bread should have been more toasted and crunchy but perfection, as that hairdresser that f*****d up your haircut irreparably can probably confirm, is not for this Word but for the afterlife in Heaven. I also ordered a “focaccia with balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil” as a side and I received what it looked more like an “honest bread with balsamic vinegar and extra virgin olive oil”; it was a bit like going on a blind date expecting to meet Beyonce`and finding your college sweetheart you haven’t seen for 15 years. It was a good experience anyway, just different. On with the pizza. I won't annoy you to death with a nerdy explanation on the difference between roman and neapolitan styles, flours, dough, and proofing time. It’s like asking a man if he prefers breasts or buttocks, it's a debate without solution. It’s enough to say that it is a good pizza and you won’t be disappointed. It comes with a thick, quite bread-y rather than airy crust, probably a bit more gluten development would have helped the crunchiness. The sauce is spot on, perfect balance between acidity and sweetness, an Italian Sunday lunch flavour kind of situation. Toppings are nice and fresh and they don’t go too crazy with them which is a good thing; because with pizza “less is more” and you don’t need to chuck an entire aisle of a convenience shop on top to make it delicious. For the record we chose a Marinara (red pizza without mozzarella), Napolitana and Diavola. A few little touches I appreciated: you can have a carbonara with or without cream (which is the original way to make it) and a nice “affogato” as a dessert which is a shot or two of espresso on vanilla ice cream. And yes, for the people that love gory details “affogato” means “drowned”. The staff is super friendly and efficient and the waitress that helped us can uncork a bottle with military precision, no hesitations, straight to the point like a Prussian general. Should I say anything else? Well, if you need more details to be convinced to book a table right now, you are probably hopeless and you are better off to your local Subway/Greggs. Villaggio is good value for your money and, If you don't believe me, go ahead and try the place for yourself. Who knows, maybe you'll be the lucky one to find a dirty menu or a hair in your pizza, proving me wrong!
