The best restaurant in Saffron Walden and I have tried most of them. The food is sensational, fabulous wine list choice. Relaxing and perfect ambience. The chef is fantastic, friendly, has great customer service and cares about his business and customers. A very rare find these days. Will definitely be going back and definitely recommend this to anyone.

We decided to treat ourselves to dinner. It was our first time. The evening started well. Starters were nice. Service was good, maybe a bit more training would be nice when it comes to food questions. Mains were very disappointing. Bland, fish was dry, not fresh, microwave heated beans that were mushy, lamb cold in the middle. For the price of food the quality is not reflected. We found this disappointing and a waste of money. There was a large table adjacent ours that looked like a staff meal was had and not cleaned up. Not the nicest view to have an expensive dinner.

My wife and I went to the restaurant for dinner to celebrate her birthday. Front of course staff were attentive and courteous and knowledgable about the menu. We have three courses, all three were well prepared, nicely presented and very tasty. The restaurant is nicely decorated inside with nicely set tables, pleasant background music, but not too loud so easy to have conversation. All in all a very nice restaurant.

Nice enough but not really worth the money. Tbh I did have a tasty steak. Few things let it down overall though. The ‘crust’ on the steak was mustard mixed with brown sugar and the sugar was grainy, it needed to be cooked in some way. It was also a shame that my potatoes were burnt and when the attentive young lady asked how our meal was I told her, but she didn’t know what to say and just kinda backed off sheepishly. The veg was cooked well but just piled on. The chocolate fondant was tasteless but the creme anglaise was so good. With a little attention and fines this could be an absolutely amazing restaurant, but I won’t be going back any time soon I’m afraid.

Really nice evening out and felt good to support this local business that has been going many years and which I don’t visit enough. Both wines we had were good value and presentation of food and balance of flavours put the menu ahead of anything I’ve had in Walden for a long while!

After visiting The Restaurant occasionally for nearly two decades, last night's visit will be my final time there. With only three couples in the place on a Friday night, you'd think the chef proprietor could get the meat right, but I had chewy pigeon - it was so rubbery I could get it down only with spinach on the same fork - followed by chewy lamb served with unpleasant, clearly recycled potatoes which tasted only of vegetable oil. Since it was my other's birthday I didn't complain - near-inedible meat I've been served there in the past has been replaced or deducted from my bill - but this time I give up. Never again.

We had a lovely meal here this week. It was a Thursday evening and we were the only people at the restaurant, which is a shame as it was a really nice venue and the food was very tasty. The waitress was friendly and attentive but not intrusive. There was fresh bread, from the bakery next door, and olives while we waited for our starters. The food was freshly cooked and nicely presented. Portions were plentiful and there was a good selection of wines to choose from. The food menu also had ample choices available. The white linen and service make this venue a bit more special than some of the other options in town. A good restaurant with lots of character and charm, we would definitely visit again.

It was the first week of indoor opening and sadly the place was a little empty. I don't know why, because it felt like a very safe place with plenty of separation between tables, and the food was excellent. We were offered a prosecco on the house to celebrate their reopening, which was appreciated! We had asparagus and smoked duck breast starters, both very precisely prepared. Both the mains were excellent - duck breast with a pomegranate jus, broccoli and roast sweet potatoes for me, a beautifully cooked sirloin steak & chips with curly kale for Deena. Service was excellent but the ambience was, sadly, a bit dead owing to the lack of customers.

It was a great shame that 2 other tables had cancelled the night we were there, but the cosy ambience meant that it wasn't completely devoid of atmosphere. Roll on the day when all restaurant bookings require a deposit! It is hard for a traditional style of restaurant to compete with all the local pubs that seem able to push out high quality imaginative food. We enjoyed our meal here (merguez very good, swordfish very good, lamb a little over for my taste, creme brulee decent) and found Hassan a charming host. The service was fine. Sometimes I find that service strangely declines when a restaurant is less full. That wasn't the case here. Wine list is fairly short but reasonably priced - the Primitivo was a decent example with medium weight and a fruity mellowness to it that worked well with all the dishes.I guess the food at trocs is pretty safe and could be said to lack pizzazz, but somehow I didn't mind that. I don't wish this to be "damning with faint praise" and we'd definitely go back with friends (which must be the ultimate test).

I don't really like kicking someone when they're down, but our recent experience here was distinctly average. It's a little frustrating because the venue has potential, but the a la carte menu promised great things but generally underdelivered and the service could only be described as friendly but not very slick. Our starters were quite good. Cathy's red mullet main was nice but my Angus steak presented a fine hunk of meat that was ruined by the inappropriate demerera crust. The puds were quite nice for the banana dish but frankly poor for the chocolate fondant. Our D'Arenberg red wine was okay. In these times where there's a focus on sanitisation, it was not impressive to see a floor basket brimming with used hand-towels in the gents loos.We have taken up their midweek deal in years gone by and had hoped for a wonderful a la carte experience pre-lockdown; sadly, the overall quality failed to meet expectations for a higher price-tag.

Not the most auspicious first impression of this restaurant: a pack of wet wipes dangling from the handle of the front door and then a yucky sticky handrail going down the stairs to the restaurant - I was grateful for the hand sanitizer waiting on a table at the bottom! The restaurant is in a cellar and pretty gloomy - could do with better lighting. There were three staff on duty and though they were very pleasant and polite, they were young and inexperienced: salt cellar on the table was empty; informed what was not available before we'd even sat down; didn't know what drinks from the bar were available (and clearly not much choice). A bit of a wait for our meals to be served but not too bad. When they were finally served, unfortunately my swordfish was overcooked and under seasoned, the prawns slightly under cooked and, like the swordfish, had zero seasoning or marinade so were completely tasteless. Just a pop of chilli jam on them would have made such a difference. The worst part of the dish was the julienne of courgettes and mixed peppers which I have a sneaking suspicion came from a big pot on the stove which was constantly reheated so the end result was a grey pile of unrecognizable vegetables that was covered in oil. Also served was a large boiled potato cut in half, sprinkled with parsley and which could have done with a few more minutes of cooking. It was a bit like eating a meal your grandmother had cooked. My husband's fillet steak was a good piece of meat but overcooked with the centre being a pale blush colour rather than pink with a hint of red and not enough sauce served. This dish came with bog standard vegetables prepared with very little imagination. We were disappointed at the lack of flair and expertise shown with the food produced and found it very dated.

We had spoken to Hassan, the owner/manager/chef, earlier in the week and he had promised to "do us proud" as this was a special occasion. We were given a room to ourselves, which was probably just as well for other diners as we may have been a little bit noisy. The service from the two young lads who waited on us was friendly and efficient and the food was excellent. Highlights were the asparagus and the fillet steaks, both delicious and cooked to perfection, and the extremely tasty Malbec from Salta in Argentina. Service was timed just right and the three courses we chose were excellent as was the wine list - and not too expensive. There is an excellent mid week menu for two or three courses but we opted for the a la carte. My only criticism was that as a non-meat eater I would have liked to have seen more choice of fish on the a la carte (I actually opted to have the fish from the mid-week menu which was very good). This was my 3rd visit and the food was excellent, as it has been on every visit. However what lets it down is the front of house service. A young girl who was very pleasant but could obviously benefit from some training as we frequently had to ask for things including bread despite there being butter in the table, also there were no side plates which I would have expected of a restaurant of this quality. Is it the service or lack of frontage that keeps people away? As everytime I have been (always Friday nights) there have only been 1-2 other tables occupied. Such a shame as it wouldn't take much for this to get 5 stars from me and probably more customers

Chef Owner does a great job ,great value. One of the few restuarants that always has a very personal .always great food, well presented.Quaint rustic cellar ,few covers and therefore intimate and can be romantic.Did Christmas day lunch last year, it was the best in Saffron Walden.

We visited here last night for a birthday meal. Arrived early but received a friendly welcome & invited to sit at a nice table with a fresh red rose & tealight. The young waiting staff were very attentive, we decided to go for the July special of £16.95 for 3 courses. I had falafel which was very well presented & tasty, we both had the pork dish for mains & this was deliciously tender with fresh veg in a sauce full of flavour. For dessert we dipped into one another's - North African pastries & ice cream with fudge sauce. The entire meal was excellent, as indeed was the service. The ambience in the cellar of a very old building is very romantic & we will not hesitate to return. Even the gents loos have pot pourri! Don't be put off by negative reviews, our experience was memorable. This small restaurant has been here for at least 10 years & wouldn't have survived so long if it was rubbish. It is a delight to go to an individual restaurant which is not part of a large chain.

Was pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. Ate from the 3 course for £16.95 restaurant and food was all excellent with a good choice. Two very good young waiting staff - polite and professional. Lovely intimate surroundings and tables not too close together so you can have privacy. Would definitely recommend and I will return.

Restaurant is in the basement of an old building and accessed by stairs. Inside the setting is intimate with taped music playing. Tables very inviting with flowers, tablecloths, nice glasses etc. Staff are friendly and very helpful. We had dinner which was cooked very well and beautifully presented. I had the impression that meals are cooked to order (rather than cooked and re-heated) because I asked for a change to my meal and this was accommodated. Good selection of wines. Price was what I would expect for the quality of food, service and setting. Toilets were clean and had a good selection of toiletries. I would recommend this venue.

We have eaten here on a few special occasions and the food has been both interesting and excellent, it appears everything is prepared from scratch so don't be in a hurry. Service is fine and the wines excellent. It just lacks atmosphere and it is not cheap but I suppose you get what you pay for.

We had a walk round before deciding to pop into this one. Down the stairs to the basement /cellar. A warm welcome by two charming new to the job waiters. What good friendly polite service.Ok to the food. Everything was home cooked it reminded me more of a wine bar, very quaint but the ingredients very fresh regarding the food. We had fish for starters and I had pork loin. My husband had lamb. Summer pudding was exquisite and the chocolate dessert melt in the mouth. It was an excellent meal and we were happy with the price (starters mains pud coffee one soft drink one glass wine £70+) we were stuffed. Yes we would go back and it beats any of the awful chain restaurants that have sprung up. Thank you to the new waiters you did a great job, oh and the chef of course! Great find.

Couldn't believe the low ranking of this excellent restaurant and decided to write a review. My wife wanted to celebrate our wedding anniversary and decided that we wanted something different from Chinese, Indian and Italian that seem to dominate the local restaurant scene, as such we decided to try out The Restaurant on Church Street. The menu was varied and we struggled to decide which dishes we would order. My wife chose scallops whilst I went for the red mullet fillet which was served with fresh fennel and an orange salad. for our mains my wife chose pan fried sea bass with king prawn, coriander and lemon butter sauce, julienne of courgettes, mixed peppers and new potatoes. I chose the rump of lamb roasted with cumin, with pistachio and rosemary jus with garlic scented roast potatoes, butter bean and tomato cassoulet; this was complimented with a superb Argentinian Malbec rose from the Mendoza region. All in all the meal was superb, the service excellent, the setting intimate and a rating which is far too low! There is also a small annexe room for private parties which I will remember for future events.

Sadly unknown and still undiscovered. I have visited this restaurant several times now and find it surprisingly quiet. It truly is a hidden gem. Unique basement location. intimate and welcoming interior. The proprietor is the very talented and creative chef. Each time I have eaten here the food has been excellent both in quality and presentation. Last night was no exception. Give it a try, you will not be dissapointed .

First of all, it looks as though there are reviews for other restaurants getting mixed up here. This one is actually called The Restaurant on Church Street, I believe.Anyway, we ate here tonight and were very disappointed. My first thought when our main courses finally came was that I could have cooked that myself (except I would have provided more than one boring vegetable)We found the menu uninspiring and dull and the food seriously overpriced. It is quite fair to say that we have had many more interesting and imaginative meals in chain restaurants. We will definitely not be returning to The so-called Restaurant.

There are very few non pub restaurants in Saffron Walden but this one is a gem!It has a street door and a side window but is very understated. It is actually in the basement and accessed by a fairly steep stair. It is small but cosy. The meal we had was excellent and topped with complementary bread, tailed with complementary chocolates and strawberries plus an invitation to share a port with the chef.Undoubtedly, the best steak I have ever had!Service was delightful with an eager to please and very polite waiter.

Went there for our wedding anniversary. Called before to book a table and left a message to book table, but no one came back to us. Surprising, as it was virtually empty when we arrived. Long wait for drinks order to be taken and for drinks to arrive. There was only one waiter there. Food was ok but greater attention could have been paid to presentation. Waiter obviously not experienced as he never offered for us to try the wine. He just brought a open bottle over and plonked it down on the table. Tried to partially clear table whilst we were still eating as well. What should have been a special evening was only just satisfactory and we will not be returning soon.

We visited for the first time this week and had a lovely evening. The room itself is lovely - an attractive, characterful, warm cellar. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The menu was interesting with a number of items that we were keen to try. The wine list was fairly short, but included a good range of options, well priced. Overall, we really enjoyed the food - fresh, delicious and well presented. However...there were a number of niggles over the evening that led to us feeling that there were cutting too many corners in order to keep costs down. Firstly, they had discontinued the wine we ordered, but not bothered to reprint the wine list. Secondly, we had both ordered chicken tagine with vegetable couscous. What we received was grilled chicken with casseroled vegetables, with couscous on the side. When we asked the waiter what had happened to the chicken tagine, he said that the kitchen had switched the recipe in order to economise/avoid waste, but they hadn't updated the menu. Finally, the espresso that we ordered was so bitter and strangely frothy as to be undrinkable (the waiter agreed and apologised), and tasted like excessively strong instant coffee rather than freshly prepared espresso. Overall the meal and the wine were extremely cheap. However, we would have preferred to pay a bit more and to have enjoyed greater attention to detail. It is a shame, because the setting, the menu, the service and the cooking skills are all there - with only a little more effort this place could be fantastic. It would be great to see a first rate restaurant in Saffron Walden and of all the places we have eaten locally, this has the best potential. We would recommend and we would definitely return.

We ate here for the first time recently. The venue is a cellar, it's attractively if simply furnished, and warm. The night we went it was pretty much full. There is a set menu at £26 or an a la carte, upon which mains range from £15-£25. Reasonable wine list, some by the glass. Food when it came was very tasty, well cooked. The issue we had was chaotic service, with lost wines, missing cutlery, dishes arriving at different times. Overall a three blob rating - four for the food and venue, two for the service.

My wife and I went to 'The Restaurant' for the first time on Saturday 29 September. The cellar restaurant is spacious and well laid out. There were some different dishes on the menu and I was excited to try something new.We both had the Merguez sausages with salad, cous cous and mint riatha to start...gorgeous !!for main I had the cumin roasted lamb with butter beans in a light tomato sauce and a cheesy, creamy potato slice...simply the best lamb I have ever eaten !!my lamb and my wife's fillet steak were cooked to perfection and we chose the morrocan red to wash it down, this was a gamble and i was intrigued, for the fact that I have never heard of morrocan wine before. It was amazing, and at £20 well worth the experience. You must try the baked fudge bananas with mango sorbet for desert, incredible !! especialy with the house desert wine (£5 per glass) which balanced out with the sweetness of the desert perfectly. My wife went for the Port and cheese board and it looked very well done and was an ample serving.Thank you as well to Jane, who waited on us and impressed us with her knowledge of the wines and menuHassan the chef/owner came and sat with us at the end of the evening for a chat and a glass of wine which was the perfect end to a perfect evening.Saffron Walden diners, do yourselves a favor and get down there for some amazing food

My husband & I were visiting family in the area and we ate here with them on Saturday night - the food was really good and the summer special was very good value - 3 courses for £15. I liked the different choices on the main menu as well - so will be back to try them. I enjoyed every course. My husband had no complaints over the wine he ordered. It had a very relaxed atmosphere, service not overly fast but we didn't mind that.
