Pub, superb well run pub in a butiful area of R. C. T's countryside. A very good greeting ( covid considerations adhered to) and excellent service throughout. Beer/wine superb, a few pints of one of my favourite beers, fullers ESB well kept. A fullers ESB glass to suit gave a nice touch. Food, very good in general, however my belly pork starter was the smallest portion of food I've ever seen served in a restaurant in my life. My floater coffee was cold and the remedial was to pour a fraction of hot water into it, it should have been replaced immediately, it was still cold on re serving. Conclusion, one or two below par issues but in general very good to excellent, we will go again in the future.

I visited last evening, the staff had kindly arranged tables next to each other so i could eat out with my parents but at separate tables. We easily chatted and could ask each other what delicious dishes each of had. We choose to have the set menu and we were delighted with our choices. We could not resist the dreamy desserts so had to have the 3 courses for the great price of £25. So glad this wonderful pub, with such great food is in RCT, a great consolation in the time of local lockdown. Thanks to the Red lion and their staff for such a lovely evening.

We found the Red Lion on Google maps as it was the closest pub to the hike we did (4 falls). We reserved a table last minute for lunch which was no problem. We were advised that the kitchen closed at half 2 so we reserved the table for 2 oclock. However we were delayed on the hike and weren't gonna make it until about 2.45. We called up to say we would be late and if it was possible to make our food order over the phone as to avoid missing last orders in the kitchen. It was absolutely no problem, and they were trusting enough to put the order through with only our word that we were gonna turn up. We got there about 2.45 and sat outside on some lovely tables in the shade of a tree (it was a lovely hot day!) with a great view of the hillside in a very peaceful area. The food came out shortly after and was absolutely delicious, 10/10. The bang bang cauliflower bites with chilli jam was amazing, and the fish and chips was one of the best I had ever had. My girlfriend is Spanish and had never had Fish & Chips before, it did not disappoint! Great, fast & friendly service too from the waitress. Overall it was perfect lunch experience that we were after after a hike. Thank you :)

Following a recent recommendation, I thought I would give this a try! Booked on line for 5 of us Saturday evening which was simple in itself then drove the 40 or so minutes from Llantrisant. A beautiful and very beautiful pub was waiting for us which, once inside, was very ‘olde worlde’ and cozy. Staff were very attentive, the presentation and taste of the food was outstanding and there was a nice menu to choose from. It’s the sort of place you hope to get snowed in at to be honest! I can only imagine how it looks when the log fires are roaring. You really wouldn’t want to leave!!The place is exceptionally dog friendly which is a plus especially if you have been walking the Brecon Beacons with them. Cannot recommend enough!

As we’re not local, we didn't know what to expect but the level of service and quality of the food was above and beyond anything we could have hoped for! The waitresses were attentive and friendly and made us feel welcome whilst the food arrived quickly and was genuinely some of the best we had tasted in a long time! All of this whilst being in a comfortable and warming atmosphere in a beautiful part of the country! My wife and I were staying at a nearby hotel and this pub was recommended. Covid 19 regulations were in force and made things difficult. As soon as we walked in we were asked have you booked? No welcome greeting. It didn't seen a friendly place. It felt that this was a locals pub and strangers not welcome. We decided just to have drink and were told you have to sit outside and given obscure directions to a bench. We quickly had our drinks and promptly departed.

We called in after visiting Sgwd yr Eira. It wasn't planned and we hadn't booked but they were able to accommodate our group of 6.They'd worked hard on making things safe with a one way system, track and trace and sanitisation with Penderyn Whisky hand sanitiser. The pub is really attractive inside with a cosy bar and a few other spaces for dining.Having arrived at an awkward time there was only a nibbles and sandwich menu. It was ideal for us. There was a reasonable choice at between £8 and £12. Probably a bit expensive for what it was but these are difficult times so we were reasonably happy.Drinks and food were ordered at the table and delivered to us. Friendly service, good atmosphere and a comfortable seating area. Ideal after a damp days walking.Hopefully we can go back soon for an evening meal.NB it's not the easiest place to find. We ordered starters of mushrooms, ham hock and fillet of beef and mains of sea bass, pork belly, duck and lamb. Came here on Sunday after reading all the excellent reviews. It’s a shame they dont serve anything other than roast for main as the reviews make it seem like the other food is excellent. We all had whipped goats cheese to start which was very good. Small and gone in an instant but delicious nonetheless. The roast beef was disappointing. The menu stated ‘served rare’, so when my friend asked if hers could be as rare as possible, I was expecting hers to be blue. However, both of ours arrived well done. Hardly a pink bit of beef on either plate. We were hungry and didnt want to make a fuss, but we shouldn’t have to let them know it wasnt remotely rare. Unfortunately, the caulliflower cheese was not cooked enough, the other veg was standard sunday roast veg. The gravy didnt have much flavour and our yorkshire pud came thin and as a slice of a much bigger pud - bit odd. For £12.50 the roast would have been very reasonable. Not sure about the pricing though as the goast cheese starter was £8 and pretty small. The brownie at £7 was a bit disappointing as it was dry and a bit gritty. This may be to some people’s taste as it had lots of dark chocolate but it did not seem like much of a brownie. It was quite thin and dense. I like mine with a bit more air/height, hopefully soft and gooey. I’m no brownie expert though and it tasted fine. Could hardly notice the honeycomb. The cabernet sauvignon we had at £25 a bottle was good. They staff were friendly and the food came quickly. For a pub/restaurant with three consecutive years of certicates of excellence, I expected the food to be a lot better.

I love food. Everything to do with it, especially eating. We came to The Red Lion Inn on a Wednesday evening.First impressions on this establishment is WoW. The vintage original look and feeling is fantastic. (Due to covid19 restrictions, I was very impressed with what they are able to do)The staff are very friendly, Nothing is to much for them. Very attentive,The owner is really lovely and has plenty of time for her customers and from what I seen also her staff.Hand sanitiser on every table. The startersWe had was monkfish scampi and peppered fillet steakThe monkfish was very nice according to my wife.(would not allow me a bite, so must of been good)The Welsh peppered fillet was perfectly cooked to a medium rare temperature. The steak was very tender. The accompanying slaw was very tasty. Only negative for me is the steak was advertised as peppered but only had a small amount of seasoning and i feel would benefit from adding more cracked black pepper. The mainsI had the Lamb cutlets with crispy belly, The flavour and seasoning on the crispy belly is divine. The overall presentation, quality and taste of meal was to a very high standard. The olive oil mashed potato is full of flavour. The lamb itself was again cooked perfectly. Nice and pink, overall a very tasty and very well executed meal.My wife had the Duck breast, this was a very beautiful plate. The breast was perfectly cooked with a perfect pink consistency throughout the plate. The raspberries and other accompanying fruit/veg went very well with the duck. Yet again another very good plateI very rarely go to a restaurant and enjoy it to the standard I have here. The portion size is very big and for me would benefit both the customer and the establishment if they was slightly smaller, perhaps then i could of fitted in a desert. Thanks again to all the staff and chefs at The Red Lion Inn Penderyn.

We love the Red Lion and have recommended the food to many people. However, on this occasion (7th March) we were a little disappointed. We were a table of four booked for 7.30pm. The waitresses were busy but we didn't mind waiting for our order to be taken. Unfortunately, every course was luke warm. We didn't want to make a fuss as we were with friends but when we got home, my husband and I discussed how disappointed we were on this occasion. We paid £80 a couple. If just us as a couple, we would have made our dissatisfaction known. We are hoping this evening is a one off as we really love this place and go there for all special occasions. I'm nearly at a loss for words - called in today for a drink with a group of about 15 people after a walk. I was served by, I assume, the owner. Very miserable and although she did serve me with a hot chocolate she obviously didn't want to do it - hot chocolate and a glass of Diet Coke was nearly £6! She was then overheard saying we were too noisy for he pub. Then she proceeded to tell us that they don't like groups of more that 12 unless they are pre-warned so they can put an extra bar person on. I notice she didn't tell us we weren't welcome before she took our money!!Needless to say, we didn't stop. I also visited the pub with another group about a month ago. The same unwelcoming attitude happened then too.

On entering we were greeted by a massive roaring fire at one end of the pub. There were a few locals in but made to feel welcome very quickly. I have returned a few times over the years and have always been made to feel welcome.Beware make sure you have a designated driver if you go by car, the ales on offer are not for the faint hearted.

For desert we both had the Treacle and Raspberry tart which was absolutely delicious. We had a lovely bottle of the house Merlot which complemented the beef. Beautiful old pub, massive log fire in the bar, lovely restaurant area. The food was delicious and well cooked, no complaints from any of our party. Maybe just one issue that was raised by several of us, a simpler dessert e.g. Sticky toffee pud or apple pie etc. Included on the menu? The desserts on offer were a little OTT ( but tasty all the same ) a few of our group declined them. That said can't wait to go back, maybe for Sunday lunch.

The croquette starter was good and our mains of chicken was perfectly cooked and in a pleasant sauce. Good choice of wines and beers make this well worth the drive, as it is a little off the beaten track. Service wasn’t quite as good as previous as we were asked multiple times if we wanted drinks but it took ages for them to come, but that’s being picky as it was still acceptable for many places. Had friends staying from Kent and we booked here for dinner as it has always been reliable - good food and service. However, the only table we could get was in the bar (not a problem) and the place was jam packed with large parties for dinner. It was clearly a step too far as the service was no where near as good as it had been on previous visits and the lamb that was ordered by 2 of the table came out so pink it was still baa-ing. No-one came to check if our meals were ok and when they eventually came to clear the table, I said that 2 of the 4 meals had been inedible, which they had been. Someone else came over and asked if the 2 whose meals were uneaten would like to order something else, but there was little point as half the party had finished their meals. It put a real damper on the night as we had all been at the coast for the day and arrived with big appetites (after we had said how great the food was) and then it was awful. The pub did not charge for the 2 meals and gave the 2 people free desserts, but the night had been ruined. I gave 1 star because they did make some effort to apologise, but we will definitely not be back, nor would we recommend this to anyone. If it was a busy night, they should have staffed accordingly or not accepted so many bookings as we weren`t the only ones who we left underwhelmed by our night out.

We visited this pub for our last meal and was a little surprised at how spendy their menu was. However-the food was fantastic and well worth it! My partner had duck and I had the veggie strudel. The presentation was impeccable, the staff friendly and I would highly recommend this pub!

When visiting our home town of Aberdare - we went out with a group of 12 family and friends to the Red Lion Inn. We prebooked and also due to the number also preselected meals. Food was great and service was just right. Food arrived hot and was really tasty - no complaints all round. I had lamb and my wife has the seabass - both was excellent. Our group had the Venison, salmon, cajun chicken from grill and everybody was satisfied. Also good beer selection with wine and prosecco. When we are back in Wales we will definitely visit again.

We stopped for dinner after driving around in the national park. This pub is wonderfully placed within nature, with great decor. They seated us even without a reservation, service was excellent and the food was really delicious. I would definitely recommend visiting, and it is no wonder it features in the top pubs in Wales.

Visited today with my partner looking forward to Sunday lunch. We booked in advance but were sat in the bar which was very crowded. Starters were limited so had creamy garlic mushrooms which were bland. The bread was delicious but wasn’t toasted which I would have preferred. I had lamb which was ok. The Yorkshire pudding was lovely, as was the gravy and the vegetables. My boyfriend had beef which he didn’t like. I tried it and thought it was bland. The cauliflower cheese was underdone and bland, the roast potatoes tasted reheated and were hard. £38 for the two courses and a drink each - can’t say I’d go here again.

We popped into the Red Lion Inn before we went for a hike to the nearby waterfalls, and I’m very, very glad we did. We had the lunchtime set menu, which looks a bit pricier than other set menus I’ve seen but is well worth it. I had the Bang Bang Chicken, chicken with noodles in a peanut sauce, and got a very hearty portion which was absolutely delicious. And then there was dessert - called a ‘Chocolate Nemesis’ which I think tells you enough about its contents! It was absolutely gorgeous. If we pop by this way again we will definitely be coming back.

Myself and my family came here for Sunday lunch whilst staying on holiday in the area. We all had a roast - three of us had lamb and two had beef and it was absolutely delicious! The meat was melt in the mouth together with a good selection of vegetables. We also all had desserts which were fabulous! Would love to return if in the area again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

We visited here for my dads birthday, place was a bit crammed but generally an OK atmosphere. Food was very average but paid the same as what you would in Central London. I ordered a glass of white wine (Sauvignon Blanc) and was disgusted when the bill came as it was £9.40 per glass..... yes £9.40!!! It came to a total of £180 between 5 of us, with no starters and only 2 desserts. The staff were not extremely friendly (apart from the 1 exception) and to be honest I feel there are plenty of places that you can go (within a 10 mile radius) that are much better value for money and a lot more friendly. Unfortunately we will not be returning....

Not a cheap restaurant by any means … and this is a proper restaurant, not pub food. But if you feel like treating yourself, then the Red Lion was for us a highlight of our Welsh trip. Really good food - the lamb was outstanding - and generous portions.

Popped in for lunch en route from the West Midlands to Pembrokeshire - we had been delayed by traffic and arrived ten minutes before they were due to stop serving but staff were very a accommodating and managed to seat us in the bar area (as we had our dog) and promptly brought us some menus. The sandwiches (BLT and a Club) were delicious - chargrilled for extra flavour! The setting is just gorgeous - opposite a crumbling church, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, although only a couple of miles detour (up a tiny single track road) from the main route. Friendly staff, a cosy, welcoming interior and immaculate loos. We will definitely return, although will book ahead next time as this hidden gem seems to be very popular, not quite as secret as it may appear!

Had an elderly relative with me and the staff couldnt do enough to see we were taken care of and had the appropirate seating etc. Great little area of military memorabilia too. Nice to have a decent country pub like this in South Wales.

This delightful inn will remain a very happy memory of a mid-week holiday in Penderyn. We loved the decor, the staff were very friendly and the food couldn't be faulted. We both had the Welsh lamb which was excellent. Every dish I saw go by our table looked good. We went back for dinner a second time and booked an interesting table near the bar. We could look out the window at the church and graveyard and tried different dishes. On the advice of one of the waitresses we tried a Welsh red wine from Monmouthshire. We all agreed it was very good and went perfectly with the dishes we chose. I think their cheese platter is one of the most interesting I have had in a long time, especially the black charcoal cheese. The cheeses were mostly local and we noticed they could be purchased at the amazing Penderyn distillery in the village. If this place is busy on the weekends, I am not in the least bit surprised.

Off the beaten winding track, this secret find is an amalgam of all that is best in this uncertain world- nestled amongst the unforgiving, epic Brecon hills, sympathetically renovated, and a reassuring celebration of our cultural institution- a great Welsh Pub. But so much more. The food is exquisite, seasonal and beautifully presented, the wine and beer portfolio carefully curated to compliment the menu and satisfy anyone from a cask ale aficionado to those desiring a craft beer. The staff are efficient and welcoming and there is a wonderful atmosphere in the building borne out of a steady, local trade and diners happily ensconced in the restaurant area. At one stage a group of gents burst into celebratory song and the cosy, candle lit bar was alive with conversation. This is why we should go out more, this is why good pubs survive. Top drawer.

Lovely place and location great. Staff friendly and helpful but expected better fayre. I thought that it was over priced for what I had. Because I cannot eat large meals my colleague and I went for the light lunch. Light was the operative word! It was a tiny portion (anticipating that it might be very small we ordered side of chips) well presented but miniscule. The chips were hard and not very tasty at all and like the frugal meal, there were not many at all. The total cost of this plus a small drink was over £14.00 .

We were enjoying a family camping trip in the Brecon Beacons, when we found this amazing place for dinner. The staff were attentive, professional yet friendly. The menu was very unexpectedly innovative and when the meals arrived, well executed! My youngest son enjoyed Venison with a chocolate sauce and sides, which he described as "an amazing synergy of flavours" ha ha. My other son loved the fish and chips and my husband said the steak was sublime. The vegetarian option was a pie with leaks, asparagus, cream etc and it was delicious. We had cheese for dessert and the selection of welsh cheeses were fabulous. Would love to return. Thanks guys for a wonderful eating experience.

The restaurant is understaffed. It took 30 minutes for the cashier to serve two people in front of me. She had to interrupt her work to replenish the coffee machine, then to refill serviette dispenser. Morrison’s loyalty card reader not working so she has to type in the long card number. Crumpets and jam served without jam because they were too understaffed to fetch more from the stores. Queue behind me stretching out the door because the cashier doing everything bar cashier role. The loyalty card reader has been broken for weeks with no sign of it being fixed.

The Bunch of Grapeslocation-iconYnysangharad RoadOther cuisines

It's been a few years since I was last at the Bunch of Grapes, and the food has always been very good. Some colleagues arranged lunch on Friday 8th. The menu was really disappointing, just burgers, wraps and light bites, nothing like the menu I remember from my previous visits. I opted for the chicken Gyros, which I imagined would be kebab style barbecued chicken with salad and tsatziki on a fresh, fluffy flatbread, with chips. When it arrived, it literally looked like someone had opened a chicken wrap from Tesco, warmed it up and put it on a dinner plate. Pale chicken with some leaf and tsatziki in a wrap, no salad, no sense of a genuine Gyros. The chips arrived a few minutes later in a bowl, very pale and undercooked. And all this for £12!! It wasn't inedible, but it was massively underwhelming and very poor for a pub that has had such a good reputation. The beer from its own micro brewery is great and the recent renovation works look good. Shame about the food.

Food was fine. Was told at 9pm that last orders for drinks in the bar was 9.45pm. Took 15 minutes to pay my food bill as there Internet would not work. Had to pay by Internet banking off my phone in end. £90 for food. Then was told at 9.40pm that they was not serving no more for drinks. New owners are a joke. Was a regular place for my family for meals and drinks but will never use this pub again after tonight how we were treated. Shame really as last owners were brilliant .
