Best carvery I've had in a long time! Also catered well for our noisy family as its lovely and big and we had the conservatory room to ourselves

This pub is ok if you need food and a drink in an area pretty devoid of good pubs and eating places. There is a nice large outside space with plenty picnic benches and booths. Inside, the pub is quite lively with locals and tourists with plenty tables and seating areas. There is an extensive pub meal menu serving ready meals from the catering supplier but beware, the pub cooks put the vegetables on at the same time the main courses are heating up so they arrive woefully overcooked. The breakfast is dire: Cheap ingredients- Bacon, Sausages, tinned tomatoes, Baked beans - none of which stand up to being kept under a heat lamp for hours. Served with cheap cardboard bread for toast. For the cost you can have as much as you like, but unfortunately after you have eaten your first plate you don’t want to return for any more. There are much better quality breakfasts in the cafes in Bampton - The Toucan and The Old Bakery which both use fresh top quality ingredients and charge less. All in all this pub is good for a drink sitting outside but would recommend moving on if you want a good meal

A last minute dinner date at this beautiful and quaint country pub! An extremely secluded and intimate venue that served traditional English style pub food. We tried the fish and chips which were cooked to perfection… delightful! Our waitress was welcoming and the service was quick! A recommendation to visit.

Just had meal (carvery) the girl behind the bar was rude shouted at us because we were at the wrong till then slammed our drinks down on the bar. We found a table which none had been cleared and very dirty. The carving itself had ran out of gammon then we had to wait in the queue for over 20 minutes for the next joint of beef to come out. Most people didn’t bother and just had pork.

Using the camping facility which l found to be more than acceptable although the toilet and shower facilities are a little basic they were clean. As l was on site on a Wednesday, l chose to take advantage-of the Venus catering facility and the carvery which was available that day. The food was well presented, hot and tasty, unlike many similar venues the vegetables were NOT over cooked. As would be expected a wide selection of meat and vegetables to meet all expectations was available. The staff received me professionally and were most helpful and courteous in all a first class visit. As it is said the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and in the question would l return. The answer is a big Yes . Well done to sll involved. JB 28.08.2024

Possibly the worst service we've ever had. Paid for drinks & lunch, was told there was a delay as only one chef but more than one hour later, still no lunch. Complained at the bar & told it would be ten minutes or so. Food did eventually arrive & to be honest not the best. Couldn't wait to leave & certainly won't be back.

Arrived with family for drinks and bar snacks, we were served by a rude and grumpy woman at the bar who had not heard of the words please and thankyou! Asked if we could have some cheesy chips and were told they could only serve chips without the cheese! (For some odd reason) as they still had the snack menu advertised it was quite obvious she didn't want to bother with our request,(having looked at the prices i think we had a lucky escape!) Only bottled beers left, childrens orange and apple juices were disgusting (should have gone to Aldi!) Childrens play area grim and long forgotten about, i would suggest to anyone keep driving and look for somewhere better.

Excellent pub for an evening out. Drinks very nice and enjoyed a few games of pool before ordering food. It took a little while longer than expected (however it was busy so I can't complain about that) everything we ordered was absolutely lovely. Hot hearty pub grub...can't be beaten! Not sure why there are so many bad reviews. Staff were lovely and chatty, we thoroughly enjoyed every aspect.

Arrived for breakfast buffet at ten past nine, (breakfast starts at nine) and paid almost £26 for two people. Only yesterday's food ready, dried up crusty hash browns, burnt sausages and congealed beans. Glasses for juice were the next size up from shot glasses, presumably to stop you drinking too much! Got a refund without any real apology or explanation. Went to Chives in Watchet instead, had breakfast freshly cooked to order, amazing service and at half the price!

Had good expectations as my family used to come here for a carvery. However sadly we had a bad experience and definitely won’t be back. We came in at a quieter time, 4pm on a Sunday. The carver left the carvery unoccupied for over 10 minutes (!) leaving everyone in a long queue wondering what was going on. When he returned he said he’d be another 5 minutes. My husband wondered if he was drunk? He seemed a bit odd and unfriendly. Then when I came in for mine, it was also very slow, another 5-10 mins to serve the 3 people in front of me. I got a large hunk of beef fat as one of my slices and the rest of the food was fairly nice but the meat tasteless. All of the play equipment was out of order and so the kids were unable to play on anything and were disappointed. For £16 each I really wish we had just gone to our lovely local pub and had better service and tastier dinner and happier kids!

Awful, lazy and potentially racist. Went in on a Sunday morning with my husband and 4 year old daughter for some coffees and breakfast. Waiter was rude, refused to serve my daughter and clearly couldn’t be bothered. The pub was practically empty and yet if they choose to turn away paying guests I can only assume it was because he didn’t like the look of us as I am not white.

It was ok at best, room bed was as hard as a board. No shower just a bath with a hose, this went hot when you stood up and scalded you, then went cold, so I used it cold and got it over with quick. Room noisy due to kitchen vent outside window. Hotel was clean apart from bar area which was a bit sticky. Food was fine, decent dinner and good breakfast.

Popped in for a Sunday carvery expecting decent reasonably priced food after a busy weekend. It was quite busy but it's a large place, found a table and paid for our carvery and drinks at the bar. Drinks were fine, as expected but the queue for carvery was ridiculous. It took 50 minutes of standing in a queue that wrapped around most of the building to get our food. There was only 1 person tending to the carvery, slicing, serving, replenishing and keeping an eye on the whole thing. He would serve 5/6 people then disappear for 5 minutes to get more spoons or more meat. It was ridiculous. They need a serious time in motion study here or just more staff! The food itself was pretty good and no restrictions on how much you could pile on your plate. Not sure it was quite worth the price tag tho, there are better value for money and time locally. We shall not return in a hurry.

6 of us dinned here 22/09/23 We waited just under one hour for food. I ordered luxury beef and ale pie. When my meal eventually arrived the mash potato was luck warm. As for the beef and ale pie. Beef was in name only as kit was very scare, the rest of the contents was some kind of meat flavoured slush. Gravy which was served separately was extremely salty and full of lumps. My meal was disgusting. Won’t be eating here ever again

We were here overnight for a deluxe gourmet overnight stay bought for us by our daughter from Buy a Gift. This Inn fell very short on both counts. For a start the hotel reception was closed with cardbord boxes stacked up in it. Not welcoming. We had to go to the bar. Not a real issue but not quite the reception we were expecting. We were given a nice large room but the tap was falling off the sink and the shower attachment on the bath was barely a dribble...not fit for purpose. There were no toiletries other than a soap dispenser stuck on the wall with goodness knows what in it.Feedback given in the morning to a lady who accepted feedback on the tap but told me i had to understand that it was not really a shower!!!!!!!!! The meal that we were served was an absolute age coming to us because the team did not understand what was included in the buy a gift deal and quibbled every detail over the crowded bar in front of many other customers making me feel very uncomfortable indeed. We were entitled to a three course dinner but the team stated that this had to be to the value of £25 a head or under. As the cheapest starter was £7.95,cheapest main £14.95 and dessert £8.95 this would have been impossible. We were made to pay the difference in price before they served us. This meant that in spite of being ready to eat at 6 30 we did not finish our meal until 10pm. The food itself was extremely over priced for what we had. Prawn cocktail consisted of wet defrosted stunted prawns. The pigs in blankets in maple syrup had not a trace of maple syrup on them and out of the 7 pigs 3 of them were missing their blankets which if possibly why they were not as hot as they shoukd have been. My husbands T Bone steak priced at £32.95 was cooked ok but had clearly been left under a heater for a while. The lasagna was quite nice. Pudding was ok but the apple crumble was so small my husband ate it in three mouthfuls. The next day we were made to pay for breakfast at £11.90 each. A reasonable breakfast but it was suppised to be in with the deal. We were told that Raleghs Cross did not do breakfast as part of the deal and were charged for it on the way out. My parents used to go and stay at Raleghs Cross as they had loved its charm, character and great food. The last time they went they said that it had changed ownership and was really not good at all. We should have listened to them. This should have been a lovely night away for us but it was far from that.. When I wrote with feedback I was basically told that I had nothing to complain about. Basically they reckon that we still owed them money!!!! Having read the recent comments on trip advisor I see I am not alone . During our stay the team repeatedly told us how much they disliked the voucher system and wanted to come out of it. I see that they are no longer on Buy A Gifts list of hotels which will save other people from this sort of experience. Reputation is hard fought and easy to lose. Raleghs Cross seem to be a prime example of this.

There was just one person behind the bar who clearly didn't have a clue. A second, somewhat gormless chap was loafing around doing nothing. Three queues for service led off in 3 different directions. Hoping that these might move along quickly I went to the toilet where a swarm of flies made it apparent how much in need of a cleaner they were, The queue had got longer on my return and since I had no desire to find out how desperate for a chef they were, I decided to go elsewhere.

So we were instantly very happy :) yes the venue may be suffering a few staff shortages (it did not affect our experience) but what can you expect after a pandemic?!?!!! It’s definitely understandable that venues may struggle for staff or supplies in the given environment so you cannot penalise for that! We were recommended to try the burgers and my gosh we were glad we did! They were huge but still really fresh and flavoursome (not just size over substance). The dishes were also reasonably priced! Anyway we decided to sit outside, ordered our drinks and food and sat back down, after being told it would be a 45 minute wait by a rude young lady staff member, bear in mind we were booked in for 1.30pm. About 20 minutes passed and someone came out to say it was up to an hour and 30mins wait for food, which we were shocked at. Some of our party got their lunch in about 40 minutes, we got told to get ours at .... 3.15pm, we had waited 2 hours!!!! A beautiful setting that draws you in but a chaotic experience due to them being understaffed. A sticky dirty table was our first introduction and for the first half an hour there was one person serving at least 30 people , having to take and deliver the drinks orders and food orders. He coped admirably and was very friendly which is the only reason we stayed. The food came quickly once ordered but wasnt great. No care or thought , just warm it up and get it out. Not worth the prices that are charged. Huge potential for this pub. Sort yourselves out.

This is a really beautiful location, the food was good for standard pub food but the waitresses where run off their feet. I can only imagen this will get worse as the summer progresses. More staff needed - please don't shout at them if you're waiting as it isn't their fault.

We ate twice at the Ralegh cross as we were staying there. We had pre booked a table the week previous for the Sunday Carvery sensing it would be busy. The carvery was very nice with plenty of choice of veg and well cooked meat. It was one of the best pub Sunday roasts I'd had in a long time. We then decided to eat there again on bank holiday Monday as we couldn't find anywhere else as was all booked up, the staff were accommodating and did warn us that there would be a wait and they were selling out of dishes. After waiting a hour for our meals we were then informed that one of the dishes was sold out, we waited another 30 minutes for our dinner, whilst listening to staff continuously having to apologise to everyone about how short staffed they were. It was quite a stressful experience watching them trying to cope with it all. The food was ok but the curry I ordered was disappointing for the price we paid, small portion of rice in comparison with the meat, tiny portion of chutney and a poppadom. Judging by the other reviews of the Resterant at Ralegh the staffing issues and long waits are now a regular occurrence which is a shame, even going upto the bar to order a drink was hard work, feel like the owners really need to address this as its in real danger of not getting any repeat custom from the passing trade and a poor reputation.

Chaotic, sad, and best avoid this place. They were obviously under staffed, and some were like headless chickens. The food wasn’t great, and it wasn’t a good look having the guy who seemed to be the owner hanging around drunk. Their website looks great, but don’t be fooled. Food was ok at best, and over priced for the quality. Wouldn’t return

Great location, under staffed which showed in the level of service that they could offer. Food on this occasion was poor but we will try again as other visits we have done the food was much better. The owners need to address the staffing levels and get back to the standards they once had.

It is a lovely pub garden to sit in but the cider tasted like it had been watered down and the food wasn't all that great if im honest we asked for the exmoor cheese burgers but they came out with out chesse and when we when to ask about it we had to ask them to get us some chesse and also the salad on the burgers was slimmy and the chips was well over done to the point where there was no potato left inside I dont rate the place at all sorry We will NOT be back

The staff were helpful and friendly, it was busy but they still worked well under pressure and provided satisfactory service. The food on the other hand wasn’t very good especially for the price, we have had better quality food at other local ish pubs at similar prices. Somehow even weatherspoons provides better food. It was a shame because the location is great, big garden and nice play area for the kids. I like to give every place I go to that isn’t good (food wise) a second try before writing a negative review but this time I don’t feel the prices justify the quality provided.I personally wouldn’t return to have food but for a drink in the garden would be suitable.

We are three adults and our little dog, fortunate enough to to have had a very enjoyable eating out experience. The food was superb to say the least. Tasty and plenty of it as well as reasonably priced. Served by polite and friendly staff in very comfortable surroundings. Even our dog was given a little treat after we had finished every delicious morsel of our meals. We have been before and will most definitely put Raleghs cross at the top of our list for future dining out. Thank you Frank, Pamela, Mavis and Jazzie

I was visiting Devon and Somerset with my mother (92 years) in my caravan. My mother and my father had spent many happy years visiting this area and as they had celebrated New Years many years before at this establishment we just had to visit it once again. We called in and asked a very surly member of staff if we could stay for a drink we had not booked a table for lunch. In an almost aggressive manner she waved her hand at us and offered some bar stalls close to a window. She clearly did not recognise that my mother would not have been able to get on the seat offered. I was very angry and decided it was best to leave immediately which we did. Service nil points, friendliness nil points. No we will not return.

We arrived late evening for a family carvery. A very good selection of meat and vegetables, considering we arrived late evening. Exemplary service from the staff carving the meat, bringing both extra gravy and extra cheese sauce to our table. The pub has steadily improved under the current owners. We have been frequenting the pub for food for a number of years, and it has got a lot better recently.

Just had a Sunday carvery here and it was amazing. The meat choices were beef, pork, lamb and turkey. I had beef and turkey and my partner had the lamb. All the meats were tender and tasty, and portions were generous. The veg choices were potatoes that had been roasted with garlic and rosemary (and were delicious) plus roast parsnips, peas, fresh carrots, fresh green beans, cauli cheese, red cabbage and swede (this was so smooth and the chef confirmed that they purée it with butter and double cream(!) - yummy. There were also stuffing balls and Yorkshire puds, plus beef gravy and a gluten free gravy. The Covid-19 guidelines were being adhered to and it felt very safe. For £11.95 you should give it a go - but it’s only £9.95 in the week!!

Just returned from 4 night stay. Considerable improvements have been made since last visited over a year ago. Decor nice, and constantly being updated. Staff were friendly, nothing was too much trouble during our stay and Covid-19 arrangements were good. Food was good quality at a reasonable price. First time away this year due to Covid-19. We felt comfortable being away and would certainly visit again.

Visited for lunch on 18.09.2020 - it was obvious we were a table of six having been to a funeral. Woman behind bar was rude, advising us 'six only' with no other welcome. We stayed as unfotunately no other pub in area open after 2pm - ordered food which was nothing more than mediocre - and not worth the prices requested. It felt very much like this place is trying to claw back monies, with no thought of giving good food or customer service. Won't be coming here again.

A nice large caravan /campsite at reasonable overnight cost £10 without electric £15 with, no overcrowding, site managed by Sam whose pet ferret Rodney a big talking point. The pub has a reasonable range menu but the food is excellent and generous the Sunday /Wednesday roast has to to be the best we have ever had. The staff are helpful and friendly and Michelle the bar manager is an excellent host. Only downside if you like real ale its only Exmoor Bitter and not tooo specialThe owner is often in the bar but does not interact with his customers or pop behind bar to help if it gets busy

Arrived with the plan to sit outside as we haven't been in anywhere yet since pandemic. Found a place in one of the lovely outside shelters that they have built recently but it needed clearing so my husband put on his mask and went inside to look at meny (on blackboard inside) and to ask if the table could be cleared. A man came out to take the glasses off the table and I asked him if he could wipe the table for us he replied 'we don't wipe the tables outside because they are out in the fresh air' I wasn't impressed at this reply and still did not sit at the table. Then a different man came out with antibac spray and a cloth and cleaned the table for us. There were lots of others sitting outside and I felt they thought I was making a fuss as they were staring at me. We shouldn't have to ask to be kept safe as this is part of the responsibilities of the pubs being allowed to reopen. My husband ordered our food and was not asked to fill in a track and trace form which I thought were compulsory. I asked the waitress about this when she brought out food and she said that they were by the till if we wanted to fill one in. We didn't bother as it would have meant going back inside again which we really didn't want to do. We live locally so no doubt will hear if there is an incident here. We have been shielding and only just started to go out. We are horrified about how lots of people are behaving as far as the pandemic are concerned but most people aren't worried about it as we are. The food came in about half an hour which we thought was good as the pub was very busy and my husband had been told when he ordered that there was a delay on food. The food was really good and we thought it was good value for money.

I don’t like giving bad reviews but sadly I wouldn’t want others to waste their time and money. We booked a table here for dinner on a weekday. We were sent to a table in an area that looked like it was under refurbishment. It took over an hour and a half to get our starters. (I understand with less staff etc but considering we had to book a specific time, it would make sense for them to take less bookings if they can’t handle the numbers) When collecting the plates the lady said it ‘shouldn’t be too long’ for our mains. Sadly it was at least another half an hour after finishing the starters that the mains arrived. When they did the steak and ale pie ordered with mash came with chips, we asked if this could be swapped and were told probably best not to as it would take a long time!! We then discovered it was a chicken pie and it had a bone in it (obviously we knew it wasn’t even worth mentioning!!!). The food was hot but definitely not worth the price tag. A shame as the place looks lovely from the outside. We weren’t the only ones and I am certainly not picky, lots of people getting up to leave/ask how long/ask for refunds! I think our 2 hour wait was good compared to others.

The staff service was great. But my steak and ale pie wasn't great. The pastry and gravy were lovely, but the meat was way too fatty. I don't mind a bit of fat, but these were quite big lumps and meat was lacking. I would go back, as it's in a lovely location, but I wouldn't have the pie again.

I am sorry to have to write this email as I know that we are all coming out of a very difficult situation, so we were so looking forward to our family meal out for the first time in 4 months. We have visited Raleghs Cross many times for a meal as you are local to us including Christmas day for dinner as we trust your service. We arrived for dinner having booked a table for 7pm, that was all fine. Ordered drinks, sadly the bar staff were not very welcoming or happy but maybe understandable, it must be very stressful at the moment. I should mention that not once were our information taken for track and trace. We ordered our food at 7.40pm, a curry, scampi and 2 steaks at a cost of £64. On the more expensive side but we like to support local independent pubs and if the food is good quality then no problem. We were told it would be 45 mins wait, again no problem, 2 hours later my husband had to go ask as we were going to leave, we were told it was being prepared now. It did arrive 15 mins later. For £10.95 I got 8 small scampi and frozen chips and my hubby a small silver dish half full of curry with 3 small lumps of chicken and a dome of rice. I am not complaining about the staff because I can completely understand how stressful it must be, but I am complaining about the quality and quantity of the food and I don't think we will be returning any time soon.

The menu for Boxing Day was a mixture of meatballs, mac and cheese, liquidise carrot and turnip, sweetcorn and peas, oven chip and dried out onion ring plus chicken. Upon booking was told that it would be rotisserie chicken, roast pots and all the trimmings. The family were disappointed and one family member went to convey this to a member of staff; didnt care! £10.95 each would be acceptable for a roast dinner and not left overs from the day before.

We used to go here quite often, lately it seems to have gone down hill. We booked a Sunday carvery for a table of 7. We were put on a table which was very unstable, out in the conference room, up several steps. One of our party was obviously disabled, but that didn't seem to make any difference. Carvery, was at best "basic".. Thought we would try it again, being that we live within easy driving distance. This time a table for 9, specifically asked for a table near to the carvery.. Again we were put up the stairs in to the conference room, again with an obviously disabled member of our group! When questioned the reply was "have no tables for 9 down here"!!! So we queued up for our meal like a herd of cattle, 5 of our party were served (at the carvery) then 2 men pushed in front of us (ladies) and were happily served whilst we had to wait.. Food again was basic, with a choice of only 3 meats, which for the price was very poor! . Can't complain about the service as there wasn't any... !!!! Will not be going back..

I have now reached the 56 year mark and after the time I have had since April I value every day far more than I did and take each day as it comes and expect to be taken as I am by others. In all my visits to Exmoor with my parents when I was growing up and when I returned back down with my lovely wife and various dogs over the years we have never been in the White Horse. As we were staying at Court Farm in Snowdrop we took the chance on a filthy night to venture in to the bar at the White Horse. I really liked the set up=looked like church or chapel pews and plenty of country pictures and items on the walls-how it should be. The gentleman serving says Mark on the receipt was a lovely gent pleasant and hosting without any airs or graces-helpful and considerate. Meal wise we had One Trout in Almonds served with new potatoes and seasonal veg well cooked and well presented and One Flat Iron Steak cooked medium which again was very well cooked and well presented. Managed one sticky toffee pudding and one raspberry brulee washed down with Guiness and Exmoor ale, the waiting staff were pleasant and effecient and the chef has an odd sense of humour but having come from that background I enjoyed that. Excellent meal in wonderful surroundings
