We were given a voucher for this restaurant as an anniversary present, so booked a night in Cockermouth and made our visit there. It is amazing! From the moment you arrive, where you are shown to a lovely little sitting area, where you can enjoy a pre-dinner drink and peruse the menus in a leisurely way, to the lovely, calm atmosphere in the dining area to the superb cuisine - the whole experience is very special. The food was served in a very attractive way and tasted absolutely delicious. The tiny buckwheat pancake, with mushrooms and a delicate salad was a great starter, whilst my husband relished the cheese souffle. We struggled to choose which main courses to have, but I opted for the spiced lentils and roots dish which was a fascinating combination of flavours and wonderfully tasty. My husband was equally pleased with his balsamic beetroot and borlotti bean filo parcels with halloumi and other extras. The dishes were light but quite filling, but we decided we just had to find room for desserts, and were so glad we did. I absolutely loved the summer pudding - which looked and tasted outstanding - and i enjoyed a taste of my other half's passionfruit panna cotta! We returned to the cosy and attractive sitting room to enjoy coffee and fanstastic chocolates. There was an interesting wine list - we opted for a very good Fairtrade chenin blanc. It was lovely to get the chance to talk to talk to Louisa at the end of the evening and to learn about the way they had combined two houses to create such a lovely restaurant. This really is a superb restaurant and deserves its excellent reputation. I wish we lived nearer - but hopefully we will be back before too long!

The Restaurant at The Cottage in the Wood

08/10/2019: This was my second visit to The Cottage in the Wood having eaten here 3 months ago while on a walking trip with friends. This time I visited with my wife and if anything it was better than before and confirmed my views that this is a great ‘fine dining’ restaurant. The location is a little off the beaten track being part way along the Whinlatter Pass very near the Forestry Visitor Centre but it’s worth the drive. We sat in the pleasant conservatory part of the restaurant with views of Skiddaw in the distance. The (silver) service was spot on throughout our meal, being friendly and informal. There are just 2 menu options, a £50 a head 3 course with about 6 or so choices per course covering most tastes, or a full tasting menu at £70 with optional wine flight. As with my first visit, my wife and I went for the 3 course option and thoroughly enjoyed everything we had. Portions are small but superbly cooked and presented with an imaginative use of ingredients to compliment the meat or fish. We had lamb and halibut on this visit. I noticed vegetarian options. The wine list is thankfully short but has most styles to match the food. All in all a great meal and we are bound to return when we are next in The Lakes.
03/01/2020: Nos hemos alojado en los lagos durante años, pero nunca había encontrado este lugar antes. Nos quedamos a las afueras de Braithwaite, así que también estaba muy cerca.

The Fairydust Emporium

16/01/2020: Lovely little dog & people friendly place. On this visit my husband had the rainbow cake & I had a fab toasted cheese scone with chilli jam(my favourite), & a huge pot a tea to wash it all down.
07/12/2019: The Fairydust Emporium Cafe is distinctly over the top in terms of decor - and with such a name - so it should be. It’s sort of a cross between a vintage tearoom and a little girls playroom, and with a third addition of Christmas decorations there is glitter everywhere!
