Started with 4 cokes and a lemonade……all flat as tap water. 1 of them had a floating hairball only discovered as the ice melted. 5 Sunday roasts, you’d think out of 5 people one would say that was ok or nice, but no, reheated potato’s, under cooked veg, awful Yorkshire puddings, all bathed in the most awful tasting gravy ever. £80 down the drain. Lesson learned, if your the only people in there, there’s a good reason why.

Hate giving poor reviews but this really was incredible. Ordered 3 lunches - vegan roast was lovely however …. Two roast chickens were very undercooked and we sent them back . They came back again seriously red so we asked for a takeaway box so we can cook them at home. Politely asked about whether the chef was a different one to normal and got got told no but he is having a really bad day today. No offer of refund, guy behind the bar started getting angry we had politely complained . Should have guessed there was a reason they had a table free on Mother’s Day ….. avoid at all costs 😬

Brilliant evening out at the Queen Vic. The pub has been carefully and atmospherically divided into different seating areas so we felt totally free of covid concerns with drinks ordered online and delivered to the table. The staff were friendly, the atmosphere and decor were amazing and the drinks selection was immense - real ales and a massive selection of gins and mixers.. The Christmas tree is worth a trip alone. Totally recommend a visit.

We chose to have lunch at the Queen Vic on the wildest, wettest autumn day possible - and we couldn't have chosen better. The pies are amazing! - real proper homemade pies, made with shortcrust pastry and accompanied by gravy in lovely traditional little jugs ( it could have been a little thicker and darker, but tasted great). The chorizo and white bean stew was really good too. The desserts (dark chocolate brownie with caramel sauce, or warm cinnamon bun with cream cheese frosting) were both fantastic. We loved the atmospheric Victorian decor, and were impressed by the service from the friendly waiter. Our thanks to him and the chef for a really great lunch.

The Pub looks small from the front but goes back a long way. I read what others have written but did not experience anything near other reviewers concerns. We called in for a drink during the Christmas week and was firstly surprised how large it is, and secondly, how original the internal features are given the pubs age. It hasn't been altered over the years and was nice to sit by a log fire looking around the bar in it's original untouched state. The old photos on the back wall are quite interesting, these perfectly depict the town from a bygone age. I would call in again as I found it friendly and welcoming, they also served the drinks we asked for on that particular evening.

I never normally write bad reviews but this was just too bad not too! The food was so bland, overcooked and clearly frozen but also had a horrible aftertaste that made us feel quite sick! God knows what it had been cooked in. The worse thing was when I was going to put my bag on the floor I noticed how disgusting it was. Thick with dust and dog hair under our table that you could move around with your boot. How long that must have been there accumulating without even a hoover been run around let alone a mop is really quite disturbing! I even wiped down a chair with my hand and a cloud of dust rose up!!! We didn't want to make a fuss as we were celebrating with a group of older people and didn't want to put a dampener on the day for them!! Safe to say, we'll never return and the place needs inspecting and closing for a thorough clean.

Go drinking in Rottingdean about four times a year, and always look forward to finishing the evening in the Victoria. The last visit I was disappointed to see a choice of only two cask ales. Emphasis seems to be now on craft beer, but then ran out of the one we were drinking. It's still a pub of great character, but hand dryer not working in toilet seems to indicate a general malaise that has afflicted the pub since last visit. Landlord has come in for some criticism from previous reviews, but seems a reasonable fellow

The best thing about this pub is the open fire. The attitude of the staff and Management was awful. I never complain but when I ordered a lager shandy I was told we’ve no lemonade ... but we’ve just popped out to get a bottle .. ok fair enough then we ordered a Malibu ... No sorry we don’t do Malibu but we do a coconut rum. Ok that will do with a Diet Coke please . When my friend tasted her drink she said the Coke Zero was flat ... Take it back then ... So she did .. The barmaid said oh really I can only top you up with full fat Coke as we’ve no more Coke Zero or coconut rum .My friend said I’m a diabetic it has to be Coke Zero well that’s all I can do is top you up with Coke .... So my friend sat back down and drunk her drink . When I complained to the manager he didn’t want to know only kept saying you’ve drunk it ... He didn’t listen to the fact we had complained earlier but was offered no alternative. I’m very open and easy to resolve any issues but the bombastic attitude of the management was awful and was asked to leave . My friend lives in Rottingdean and for the sake of £3 for a refund of the flat drink he argued with us but had no intention of accepting any responsibility . Where was the customer care ... There was none ... I will spend my money else where in future.... So disappointed in this pub ... AVOID

This pub could be so nice - the food menu is interesting and reasonably priced, the bar staff are usually very pleasant, and it has a fire at one end of the room when the weather is cold. However, on the several occasions my husband and I have visited, the landlord's manner of dealing with anything that doesn't suit him (and quite a lot seems not to) is overbearing and off-putting. He has yet to master the basic tenet of good customer service, which has to be to make his customers feel welcome. This evening's experience was the last straw. We sat down at a round table near the fire and then ordered our food. at the bar. The table-top itself turned out to be very loose (if you leant on it, it tilted precariously) so we decided to move and asked a couple sitting at one end of a large oblong table by the wall if they minded us sitting at the other end. That was fine, and when they left we moved into their places so that we could see and enjoy the fire whilst eating. When the landlord came to give us our cutlery, he told us in a very loud, blunt manner that he would prefer us not to sit on that table because it was a table for 8, and if 8 customers came in we would be in the way. He wanted us to sit back at the round table, despite us pointing out that the table-top was loose. The only other option at the fire end of the pub was a tiny table for two positioned unappealingly near the door. Given that at that point we were the only people eating (9 o'clock on a Friday night!), and that the landlord's loud, blunt tone was inappropriate, we found the situation uncomfortable and embarrassing (No 'Would you mind . . .' or 'I'm sorry but . . .). Had a larger group of people come in and no suitable table been available, we would happily have shared the table with them, or perhaps even moved to a different table if a decent one were available. With the atmosphere for us irretrievably spoiled, we went to the bar and asked for our money back. We went on to enjoy a nice meal at another Rottingdean pub where the service and welcome were excellent. Having now read the poorer reviews of The Queen Vic on this site, we see that we are not the only customers to complain about the landlord's attitude and poor manner.

Have been coming to this pub for years, often for a Sunday roast. The food is good with big portions. Today one of the bar staff took our order and asked where we wanted to sit. When I indicated a table she asked if others come, would we be happy to share as there were only the 2 of us – we agreed. We went to sit there, but I was then told by another staff member to move to a table for 2, uncomfortably positioned by the door. Apparently, this was just in case a party of 12 arrived, or if 10 arrived and didn't want to share with us. Whilst we were there 2 other couples were asked to move places from other tables. Then one group of 4, who had sat down on the 'table for 12', were asked to move, and given the same reason.

Book for 12 people to have my birthday Sunday lunch here. The pub only set 10 covers and seemed affronted when ask to set 2 more arguing the booking was made for 10 people. It wasn’t! Having occupied an adjoining table and splitting into 2 groups we ordered our food. The last 2 members of our party arrived and whilst greeting them the landlord had a meltdown shouting you are creating a blockage and that he can’t have this disruption on a busy Sunday afternoon. Apparently the phrase the customer service doesn’t apply to this pub.

Average food, decent drink selection, friendly staff...... but absolutely diabolical behaviour from the landlord. Screaming at us for greeting friends and daring to sit down at another table because they didn’t set our table for the number of people we booked for. I’ve never in my life been treated with such contempt as a customer. Fair enough if we were raising hell but we were a table of 30/40 year olds enjoying a birthday Sunday lunch after a stroll on the beach. I’d suggest that if you can’t deal with a semi busy lunch service as a landlord of a pub, perhaps you should consider a career change.

So my friend booked for 12 people for Sunday lunch for a birthday at the pub.. turned up, small table set for 10... that’s ok cos a table next door without a reserve sign on for 4 was free so we took over both tables. As people turned up the bar staff started getting agro at our numbers.... 12 that was booked for. It was explained the other table was reserved ;no reserved sign) and we had to squeeze round one table... it was booked for 12 but they set it for 10. They then had a go at us for having and unreasonably amount of people (the amount booked for like it was our fault they had taken a booking for too many people) in the otherwise empty pub.... 10 mins later they announced we could have the other table as it was no longer reserved( was it ever reserved, probably not so that was a lie just to be difficult). We ordered drinks and food.. 2 people turned up late so 2 people got up

Service at the bar was quick and friendly, at least to start with. Our waitress was lovely, very friendly and efficient, although the food was average it did come out quickly and was excellent value for money. There was some confusion regarding our table that had been booked for 12 people but only really seated 8 comfortably ( and had been set for 10) .A neighbouring unreserved table was free so our party split only to be good the table was reserved but when my friends started moving back they were then rudely told they could sit there. The bar staff were disgruntled at there being an extra guest but isn't as if the original table was big enough for our booking anyway so not sure why this was a problem. The most memorable part of the lunch was the landlord shouting / ranting at us because 2 people stood up when 2 friends arrived. Rather embarrassing all round and I can't imagine any of our party returning.

Because her and her friends are young (19s) they ask for identification. They all show their ID and when my daughter show's her you guys refused her entry, just because she had EU identification and not British ID. This is purely racism at it's high. We still part of the European Union and even after and now, all European ID's are still valid for the reason they are. You guys are forbiding people from entering your premises based in their race, colour or religion and you should be ashamed of having your doors open. Everyone should be allowed entry if they are over age, foreigners or not, black and white or yellow, catholic, muslin or budhist etc. My daughter allways been allowed entry everywhere just showing her ID, she was very upset about this event. Just to let you guys know, I'm going to report your premises for racism and I'll go to the newspappers with this, they'll be trilled about this events that the Brexit is forming. God bless.

Please note they DO NOT accept Scottish Currency as I was told by the young barman who explained the manager/owner will only accept English. Normally I would have walked out at that stage leaving the drinks on the bar but as my friends were already seated I had to embarrassingly ask my friends for some English money to top up what I had. After two pubs refusing us because of the baby (our daughter is 4 years old), we were a bit imbarassed with the couple of friends came from Italy, invited for a traditional sunday roast: our last chance was the Queen Victoria. Finger cross, we came in and they have a nice table available for us (a bit swinging, but perfect for the ambient!). I immediately realized that was the perfect place to stay: busy enough (so not that noisy as you can't chat with anyone if you don't talk louder than the others!), nice people around, nice music (always so important for me). After choosing a nice bottle of Primitivo di Manduria - it's not that common to find good italian wines in an english pub and they have several - we had three beef roasts and a whole chicken roast to share with the little one as well: when it was served at the table in its vintage pot, we realized it was huge!!! Also the portion of the beef roast was more than enough, the meat well cooked, tasty vegetables, a huge yorkshire pudding (I really think home-made...delicious). Staff smiling and kind...just lovely! You saved our day, guys!!! Thanks!

We visited towards the end of the evening after travelling over 300 miles for a family funeral. The menu choices were good but unfortunately, there was only one steak left so we were asked to make another choice. Imagine our surprise when the message from the kitchen came back to say that chef didn't think the last steak was big enough to charge for but could we choose something else and he would add it on as an extra - and free! I mentioned that I was looking forward to the garlic mushrooms as much as the steak and would there be any chance of a couple of those as well? I knew it was rather cheeky of me to ask. We had three good meals plus a free small steak and lashings of free garlic mushrooms! This reflected the warm welcome we received and the excellent service. The house Sauvignon Blanc was excellent too although pricey. We would be happy to return - without any free food!

Popped in for lunch but as both the staff that we encountered were shockingly rude to us we didn't stay and order any food. Also the ashtrays in the garden were overflowing with cigarette butts. I wouldn't go there again.

We had Sunday lunch here and managed to get a table by the door (big mistake). Lost count of how many times we had to get up to close the door on a very cold windy day. Customers just walked in or out leaving the door swinging open. Not the pubs fault but it did spoil the meal.

It's different! Not the usual run of the mill 'pub grub' & 'throw away' beers! A VAST selection of Gins of all types & a constantly changing array of 'guest beers' make for a surprise on each visit! The owners work 'front of house', either at the bar or in the kitchen. Staff are both friendly & hardworking. Sundays are for roasts, and that's what you get! No fussy menus with goujons, onion rings, chicken wings or burgers! Just good old fashioned roasts with locally sourced meats & a veggie option. (Recommended!)

We ate here on a Friday lunchtime. There was only one barperson on duty who had to serve drinks, process food orders, collect plates, fetch food. Also there'd been a delivery which they were trying to process. The outcome was a barperson exuding stress, slightly abrupt and almost rude despite my best efforts to speak politely. Hopefully this was a one-off but the staff shouldn't have been in this position and should be taught to handle stress better nevertheless.

The ambience of this pub is very comfortable, almost like being in someone's house. Great range of gin and a really good menu to help you choose one you like and what to have with it or not. I had the ginger/cardamon one and the truffle one - both really delicious. The food was lovely with an excellent range of dishes to keep everyone happy including vegans and gluten free eaters. I am not a vegetarian but I chose a rainbow beetroot salad which was absolutely delicious. My husband had a steak which was perfectly cooked. We followed up with the cheeseboard which was generous. Would definitely eat here again.

We chose this pub because of its menu. We had seen the website and were very tempted by the choices of food and when we got to the pub, we weren't disappointed. It has a nice atmosphere, friendly staff and awesome food for us. I am vegetarian so used to being disappointed by veggie food but I had welsh rarebit and a pea dumpling broth. The broth was full of fresh beautifully cooked summer vegetables. Even the carnivore partner was impressed. Our desserts were glorious.

There are few things nicer on a hot summer evening than a tasty lobster salad. And although stocks are limited lobster is back on the Queen Vic's summer menu. Sadly local crab supplies are badly depleted this year so perhaps this is the reason why the seafood menu is not so widely advertised. Quite simply this is the best lobster I have tasted in this country at a price that is very reasonable. Lobster can so often be disappointing because it can be far less tasty than other more widely available shellfish such as langoustines. Served simply with a deliciously dressed salad and brown bread and butter it is a meal which stays in the memory for a long time. If you like lobster this is the place to come!

Recently visited having had excellent meal and service previously. Were told we could only have a table if we shared with other people. There were free tables which were being kept in case big groups came in! Had other people come in and had to share with us , it would have been fine - there was plenty of room but we needed to have a private conversation and the tables we would have had to share were small and would have been very cramped. The manager was incredibly rude and (I'm sure he won't lose sleep over this!) needless to say we will not be returning. A shame because we had planned a big event which we would have loved to have been held there.

I popped into the pub late one evening recently. I found that the price of the Guinness is far too expensive and above the norm especially when considering the state of the place. There is a difference in a pub with character and a pub which is dark and dingy in appearance. The garden is unkempt with rotting chairs and tables and quite honestly it was filthy with flaking paint and hanging old abandoned electrical wires. The girl who poured me out my Guinness offered me the pint with a inch and a qtr head on it of which I said to her.."Fill it up and I will pay for it" .. I believe she was in a hurry to get back chatting to other people at the bar. On a positive side, I will say the Guinness was looked after ok . I doubt if I or the people I associate with would venture to go there again due to the drinks being over priced , the unfriendliness of the staff, and the state of the place. CG.

Somehow this venue couldn't get warm, we ordered the roasts (lamb) but the plates weren't warm enough to maintain the food temperature. With very cold air the food got cold very quickly. Yorkshires were hard, the vegetables ok. Not in a big rush to go back.

We stopped at the Queen Vic after walking over the South Downs from Lewes. In spite of our walking attire, the Queen Vic team was warm and welcoming, even for our dog. We sat in the back, and enjoyed a few pints of excellent local ale, before ordering some food. I went for pork pie, with mash and peas. My wife had butternut squash. Other friends had the ploughman's. All were excellent. My pie, in particular, was delicious, with excellent gravy added to my own taste. The staff was friendly, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stop there before heading on to Brighton.

Took my mother for dinner, third of the menu was crossed out, ordered steak but no steak at 7pm, ordered pork belly with a change of vegetables, chef refused. We decided to cancel the order and leave the pub, to hear the manager talking behind our back. This was the second time to this place, last time we ordered toad in the hole, which was burnt, took over an hour to get the food to the table and when it came to deserts, we were told the chef had closed the kitchen and that was that. Go to the Coach House, good traditional hot food with very friendly staff.

The Queen Vic is a hidden gem in a beautiful village. The fire was blazing and the staff were friendly and keen to share their knowledge of the interesting array of ale, cider and gin (of which they have around 40 options!). The menu is impressive and specialises in modern English cuisine. With fresh fish from local fisherman, we couldn't have asked for more.We had a great time and were back the next day for a second helping. Thanks Queen Vic!

Visited on Monday and we almost walked past the pub just because it looked dark from the outside. But inside was bright great lighting and the feeling of a traditional pub. Games stacked ready to be played all from risk, battleships and guess who. Cribbage, backgammon. Lovely fire and dog friendly even selling chews for the furry four legged companions. great selection of ales and ciders we had the Seacider with blood orange very nice. And food was great smoked ox cheek, potatoes and broccoli spears, also duck hash with a fried egg was ordered. They also had pie and a tipple for a tenner which looked promising. Nice place.

We enjoyed listening to Matt Wilson the guitarist at a jazz brunch - this one was held after lunch on a Saturday. Plenty of room with large tables, and two log fires in the bar. No TV so not disturbed by anyone wanting to watch Six Nations rugby. Dog and child friendly. Clean toilets with driers which worked as they should. Obliging chef who went to trouble to make sure our order was done to our taste. If we lived here I would make it my local.

With bare wooden floors and a largely original interior this is a proper pub, The staff are attentive, there is a good range of real ales but the surprise is in the quality of there food - excellent. Four of us ate there the other lunch time; we have four very different dishes but a unanimous opinion, spot on. This is restaurant quality food, not the usual pub-grub. AND there is a range of vegetarian dishes (possibly even vegan).
