Absolutely awful, soggy, cold and undercooked chips. Fish was more batter than fish. One member of staff was rude and had an attitude. Waste of money as most of the food went in the bin. Expensive mistake, would not recommend at all.

Came on a Saturday lunchtime. Got served quickly and politely. Ordered the lunch time special sausage chips and gravy £5. Asked for extra gravy as very dry when you don't get much. Chose red salt instead of normal. Repeated plenty of gravy request when server asked if I wanted on top of in a tub. Got back to my house 2 mins away and was disappointed by the limited gravy. Box was dry at the bottom and only the chips on top got gravy. Would have given 5 stars but for this. Parking is a pain had to drive round 4 times till a space was available outside.

Visited this excellent chippy during a trip from Hertfordshire to see family in Lancaster. We particularly wanted fishcake and chips as the fishcakes are amazing and not like any we get at home. Although we got there only 15 minutes before closing, the staff were really friendly and cooked our food specially. I thoroughly recommend!

Ordered for 3 of us at a cost of over £30 for below average lukewarm (if that) food. Positives -- friendly service and arrived within the stated time (well 90+% of it) Negatives. Cold to lukewarm food Certain items swimming in grease. Ordered Scampi and chips. Chips didn't arrive. Rang the shop to let them know and was told "so sorry about that, we will send you another scampi and chips up". So I gave my delivered scampi away as I had another order being delivered. Fair play 15mins later my order arrived minus the scampi. So so disappointed with Quays. Never again for delivery.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

This used to be my go to chippy in Lancaster and used to drive past another fish and chip shop to go. Ordered from the lunchtime menu £3.95 for sausage chips and a side. Pretty much similar to the last offer they used to have. I should point out that I think there has been a change of ownership since it closed down in March when it used to get all the great reviews. They now use cardboard to serve their offerings for sustainable reasons (very comendable) and maybe thought they d only use these for the fish and chips not orders requiring gravy and such. There is now no other option but to receive the gravy in one of those polystyrene tubs (not sustainable) which offers a meager portion to say the least. It also means that you get less chips as the tub takes up a bit of room in the box rather than having gravy lathered all over the chips. I got home literally 4 mins in the car and the meal was hardly piping hot. I used to get back after said short frive and have to leave the chips a minute or 2 as they were so hot. Well sadly not this time. I'd say they were warm at best. Now for the actual food. I could be wrong but the sausage didn't actually taste of anything and would hazard a guess they are different than the ones they used to sell. I could be wrong, maybe it was just because it was so anaemic looking and not as stated piping hot. Chips werent too bad but I noticed when he was putting them in the box they appeared to have been sat there a good while and was proved right as I earlier stated they weren't piping hot. Same could probably be said for the sausage. Gravy was distinctly average and I ran out way before I'd finished my meal. These are not tubs that are freshly poured out of a bain marie but pre filled and kept warm. Now if the place was serving customer after customer I could understand this practice but I was the only one in the shop. So all in all a disappointment to say the least and that chippy I ve been driving past to get here. Well its probably gonna get 1 more customer than it used to have because sadly I won't be returning to Quays any time in the future. If it ain't broke why try fix it?

I’ve been to this chippy numerous times now and I’m never disappointed. Sometimes there’s a bit of a wait, which of course is a good sign as it’s so busy! It’s the only chip shop we use now. A few days ago they posted on Facebook that they were closing early due to the red hot weather. It was too hot for the staff to be in that environment. That made me like the place even more! It WAS too hot to be working over fryers! My auntie was visiting from Italy and the next day, as we were passing, I told her they had closed the previous day due to the heat. She promptly decided to go there and buy our tea! She said “any manager who puts their staff first is worthy of my money”. So we got our food and then sat on the canal side and stuffed our faces! Excellent chip shop!! (Make sure you ask for red salt!)

Visited this place for the first time today. Is nicely laid out in a pleasant location. Clean and hygeinic the portion sizes are generous and the quality of the food is better than the average these days. Let down by the bad attitude of one of the men behind the counter. After finishing our meal inside I stopped to thank them and when I was already out the door the man shouted 'excuse me. excuse me!'. I turned to see what he wanted and he very rudely asked me to put the trays in the bin outside of the chip shop. There was no bin inside the chip shop which we could have used and no signage asking customers to dispose of their own trays. The only bin was outside of the chip shop and it was not Quays' bin it was a local Council bin. Really mortified. Learn some manners and be grateful for the custom which you attract. I had fish, chips and curry sauce. The fish was a decent size, and the batter was nice. Not the perfect crispy type, a little soggy inside but far from being bad. The chips were hot, no excess oil so had a nice crisp bite to them. The curry sauce wasn't the traditional chip shop type, it was more the runnier more peppery Chinese style. It was the best of that kind I've had, but I wish chip shops would stick to the good old gloopy yellow stuff with raisins! Staff were pleasant, and the place was extremely clean.

There are few meals in life that comfort and fulfill quite like the aroma and taste of perfectly cooked fish and chips. Fortunately for the residents of Lancashire, Quays is a fine example of everything that it should be. We popped in here the other day as we were passing. The service was a bit slower but at least it was cooked fresh. We felt that compared to others in the area it was expensive considering the portions. On the whole the food was really nice

Being a vegetarian, I've struggled to find a chip shop that keeps their meat separate from the fish produce but here does it! Staff were very welcoming and friendly which added to the stunning building. We ordered a large amount of food (feeding a family of 8) but they managed to get our order done super quick and didn't miss a thing off of it. Will definitely be making regular visits and the homemade tartare sauce is delicious!

Unfortunately I have visited this fish and chips shop twice, and on both occasions the chips and fish have been very dry. Almost like they have been sitting around for days and re-heated. The potato also seems to be a very tasteless type of potato used for the chips. Such a shame, because this place could be a gem. I presume this could be down to bad experience from management. Alternatively, I recommend going to Neptunes fish and chip takeaway, which Is located on the A6, about 2 minutes drive from Quays.

Since Quays has been open my family and I have visited several times and enjoyed freshly cooked fish, chips and sausages. All four of us really enjoy the red salt (ask for it at the counter) and the curry sauce we've enjoyed too. Personally I only ever buy two large portions of chips which serves four of us perfectly well. On the way home from a late football match we called in on the off chance that we could get chips and even though it was 2 minutes before closing we were served fresh chips, curry sauce and sausages. I always used to make my own chips but now I don't bother. The staff I have encountered have always been friendly and nice to deal with. The shop is very clean and has been refurbished to a high standard and I wish them success.

Tried this chippy for the first time last night and I was very impressed. The service was very good, and fairly quick, and they have bar stools to sit on and papers to read whilst you are waiting.A very good idea is the fact that they sell beer and wine along side the usual tins of pop. I've not seen this in a chippy before, but it makes perfect sense! As for the food, the chips were some of the best I've ever tasted, and the fish, whilst perhaps on the small side, was also very good.Well done to the owners for diversifying their business. Good luck to you, and I'll be back.

Tried Quays for th first time this evening and was massively disappointed!Portion sizes are very small and prices are therefore high for what you get for your money. Service is sloth slow and not very friendly - tonight it was mainly staffed by teenagers whose friends were visiting them at work and they were more interested in sorting their social lives than serving customers.Chips were barely warm and over cooked, mushy peas were also so thick I could've plastered the walls with them. The booze is also so over priced it makes a petrol station garage look like the pound shop!Such a disappointment, but luckily there are other great Chip Shops in Lancaster - Hobsons & Bowerham in particular!Wouldn't visit here's again!

Have visited twice. Slow and disorganised service the first time. This may have been new staff getting to grips with the idea of serving customers. On second visit more staff and better service. But quality of fish and chips is not that good. Only just warm on both occasions. It is new and possibly early days - but needs to get the basics right.

I know the area very well, the current owner of the "Quays" chippie used to be the owner of the corner shop that was there for as long as I can remember, more than 40 years! (several owners)Unfortunately the supermarkets have ended these little convenience stores so I presume the current owner decided to try a hand at running a chippie?I called here around mid-day mid-week the first time and it was really busy, so I thought this is a good sign, I waited 10 minutes but because I had limited time I couldn't wait any longer and the queue hadn't moved, so I had to leave. Second time I called there was only me, I just ordered chips, the staff where really friendly, the place looks fresh and new as it has obviously just been converted from the shop to a chippie, well I'm afraid the chips where terrible, cooked too long as they had that dark brown look to them but they where not crispy brown, they where soggy brown. I know you have to start somewhere but the guy has a bit more experience to find before he can turn from shopkeeper to friar (Fryer), maybe I just got the tail ends of the day, either way they where not good.Maybe worth a third visit in a few months?

I went to this place for the first time today at 7.55 with an advertised closing time of 8pm only to get to a locked door - asked if I could be served I was told "sorry mate we're closed" - luckily no traffic onwards to hodgsons where I got the best fish and chips ever - they close at 8 too but at 8.01 they were still open! Therefore No rating given for the food but poor show for the service.

Very disappointed, small portions and top end of the price bracket for fish and chips in the Lancaster area. Service was very slow it took 25 minutes for me to get served although there was only 2 people in front of me. Students behind getting served cheesy chips while my fish and the gentlemens in front of me were in the hot cupboard, then a lady came in who had obviously placed a telephone order and also got served before the 2 of us. Finally got served.Sorry will not be recommending the Quays and most certainly will not be going back.

Worst haddock I have ever had. Over cooked synthetic piece of fish worse than a school dinner. This chippy used to be the best. Now it's the worst. Stay clear.
