Qismat in Moray

I’ve been a customer of the Qismat, Elgin off and on for a few decades, but have visited once a week for the last month or so. The food and service are always exceptional and the guidance of Mr Ali to extend your culinary experience is always welcomed.

Had a takeaway from here whilst working in the area, food was good but did lack a bit of flavour. Good vegetarian and vegan options and the staff were great and very helpful. Would visit again.

Went for a takeout with my family and our order was perfect chicken nice and juicy, rice soft and bursting with flavour and the sauce couldn’t be finer and when I came to pick it up the staff at the counter were very kind hearted Highly recommend

Last week I ordered a take away and specifically asked for no coriander as I have an allergy. I was told that this was no problem and they would make sure that there would be none in it. Drove home 23 miles and opened the curry to find it covered it the "green stuff". Curry not touched and wasn't driving back to complain. Just won't be going back to a place where use to be very good.

Not been for years and as good as ever. Very nice meal, friendly, helpful staff. Good choices on menu.

Two had dinner, bahjis and something else for starters and chicken and lamb curries for mains. The onion bahjis were a little floury but all the other food was very good. The mains were tasty and had good ingredients and were quite spicy. Overall very good. Service was very good. Ambience ok.

This was my first visit since lockdown was eased.I am delighted to say nothing has changed since my last visit.Superb service, a lovely meal. A varied menu and all regulations pertaining to Covid regulations were adhered to.I had been looking forward to a meal at the Qismat since the start of lockdown and I was not disappointed.

We’ve not had a Qismat curry since lockdown, but with relaxation of distance this weekend felt we could venture to Elgin. OMG forgot just how good it is. Also need to mention the slick ordering system, no hassle! Well done all staff at Qismat,

We eat at Qismat fairly regularly - but not for a long time during these lockdown days. A few weeks ago the restaurant opened for take aways and deliveries and we decided to order for home delivery. The delivery service within Elgin is free for orders over £25 or alternatively you can have a 10% discount if you collect from the restaurant. We enjoyed the food almost as much as at the restaurant but we missed the friendly service of the excellent staff. Thoroughly enjoyed !

The qismat is the best Indian restaurant in Scotland easy! Top class service from the staff and top class god every time wouldn’t go anywhere else in Elgin for an Indian apart from here.

The Qismat is the best place ever! The curries are delicious and the naan breads are the best I've ever had. All staff are so attentive and friendly. The portion size is perfect. Myself and my family won't go anywhere else. 10/10! Amazing. See you soon!

Recommend by a local business and was not disappointed! Staff were very friendly and helpful, our waiter recommended the faislabadey curry and it didn’t disappoint. Best curry in a long time.

Had a great meal a bottle of wine and everything was fine until I received a call from my credit card fraud department.

Being institutionalised, I had what I always have, which is lamb patia and a garlic nan. What can I say? It's my fave. Hadn't been here in many years, as it went downhill, but had heard it's changed hands some time ago, so thought I'd give it a shot. To have only 4 other people in at 1.30pm on a Saturday in such a big restaurant was a bit of a shock. Says outside such is from £4.99 for 2 courses. I ordered mushroom bhaji, lamb patia and a garlic nan.The mushroom bhaji was just a few soggy mushrooms and a bit of tired salad, that had seen better days. The garlic nan was very garlicky (which I like). However, it was soft like a piece of cloth. So I'm presuming they had precooked it and just kept it warm somewhere. The lamb patia (which I had to pay an extra £1, just to have lamb) was 80% a tomato sauce, with a few very tiny bits of lamb floating in it (the size of small broad beans). I ordered a half of lager, which I was charged £4 for. Total bill was almost £14, and felt completely ripped off, as left most of it anyway. Utter rubbish and I should have taken the fact it was empty as a sign of things to come anyway, so my own fault I guess. As my dear old Mam would say - "Don't do it Ethel!"

Mr Ally needs to attend a disability awareness course and understand that if someone hesitates when speaking its for a reason. My friend is very ill and struggles with his words at times. Shouting Hurry Up when they can’t remember what they ordered is rude and offensive. We won’t be back.

Visited Elgin last Thursday. Noticed advertising board outside restaurant for business mans lunch £4.99 from 12-2pm. It was 1.20 soo asked if we could still get the business mans lunch. Was told yes but that they closed at 2pm. We were shown to table and given full size menus. I told the waiter we wanted the business mans lunch expecting it to be a limited menu. He pointed to the menus we had and said “yes” . I asked what options were available in the deal. He pointed out starters and 3 different lists of main courses and said “these”. We were served quickly with our food and everything was delicious. As the deal was for three courses we asked about desserts and were told only tea coffee or ice cream. We had a tea and a coffee and finished as quickly as we could as it was already 2pm and we could see they were anxious to close.when we went to pay the bill we were asked for almost £25. I said we had asked for the three course business mans lunch at £4.99 but we’re told that was for vegetarian option only. That had definitely not been mentioned at any time despite me stating three times that it was the lunch deal we were in for. We paid without making any further protests but it left us feeling we had been conned into paying for a full meal when we had made it clear three times that we wanted the £4.99 business mans lunch. We only had a soft drink each so that didn’t bump the price up. If you eat here make sure before you sit down what you will be charged.

Group of four for lunch, pre booked our table, as it was busy at lunchtime. Everyone loved our dishes and service!

Brought friends from London to have dinner and enjoyed a fantastic meal, we chose the set menu for four which gives and amazing choice of starters, mains, breads and a lovely dessert , and extremely good value too. The food, as always, was superb, The Qismat is well know for it's expertise in the use of spices and they excel in bringing out the full flavour of the food. Service, under the supervision of Mr Ali, is faultless and a most enjoyable meal is guaranteed.

Nothing negative to say. Huge menu, large portions, great service, good value, nice atmosphere. Good central location.

2nd visit this year and this time for the buffet on a Monday night. It’s famous and both sessions are full. Busy Staff as usual and the variety of food is great for all tastes. The desserts are a bit basic but that’s not really why your there is it!

Elgin is not the most blessed when it comes to good eating places, although variety and standards have certainly improved over the past few years. Quismat is one of our favourites as the surroundings, food and service are all of a very high standard.

Had a meal on Sunday evening at the Qismat in Elgin, have visited this restaurant several times and is one of the best if not the best Tandoori restaurant in the area. The service and friendliness of the staff is top rate, Mr Ali the owner is all on hand to look after you. The choice of menu is first rate and meals are prepared and presented excellently. I really enjoy their Chicken Tikka tandoori of the bone, best choice for me, mix pakora starter and mix platter was excellent, so was the peshwari Nan bread. My wife had the chicken burryanie which she really enjoyed. Will definitely be back to enjoy the food in such a warm welcoming atmosphere, it makes your meal out feel really special. Well done to Mr Ali and his team. They are very popular for take aways as well..

I had this restaurant recommended to me by a friend and since then have visited three times on every occasion the food has been tasty.

Simply a really good meal, excellent service, lovely surroundings. All at a reasonable price. What more do you want. Excellent experience.

We booked a table for four on a busy Saturday night and were not disappointed. Staff were efficient and friendly and the restaurant clean. We sat in a side booth so although the restaurant was fairly busy we had privacy and could have a good conversation without disturbing other diners! We all ordered different dishes and everything was delicious. One of our party asked for a recommendation as he doesn’t like spicy food and really enjoyed the suggested chicken mara and chicken passanda. We will definitely return when we’re in the area. The bill came to £95 which is a lot less than we’ve paid elsewhere for a good quality 2 course Indian meal, including alcoholic drinks, for 4!

There is a consistency about this place. Huge menu ( too big?) but whatever you select arrives well presented and cooked NaN bread excellent. Will return

Just back from a family meal at Qismat. 2 years ago we had a fantastic meal here but tonight was the complete opposite. It was buffet night but we ordered from the menu. Poppadom were soft. Pakora were few.dansak and veg balti we could not eat. Chilli chicken had no chilli. Would not recommend

Have visited Qismat a few times with both family and friends. The food is always excellent and the staff are always friendly and informative about the menu. My favourite is the Chicken Tikka garlic chilli and the Peshawari Naan. Look forward to going back 😁

Ate here on Monday. I have eaten here before, in Elgin on business regularly. Monday is buffet night and I am not usually a fan of buffets. I am sure they would have made me a dish from the menu but I thought I would give the buffet a go. Had two lamb dishes and a lentil one, both were great. Best thing, as ever, was the staff. I am sure they didn't need a solo walk in on a really busy night but they were happy to accommodate me. This is a business that is really trying. Good luck and see you soon.

Good restaurant serving tandoori and mughlai food. Ambience is good we coming back from Highlands and spotted this restaurant.

The staff were great at accommodating a group of 5 folks who hadn't seen each other in years and took ages to decide what to have and then would have talked all arvo!! The food was fabulous and much appreciated.

Booked a table for the four of us on Saturday. Glad I did as it was so busy at 6pm. Always smart clean and an inviting place to go to eat. We only had main courses as we know how large the portions are. . My husband and I had Murgha masala which was brilliant. It does have a kick but does not blow your head off also no after taste. I got towels to wipe hands and face a fee your meal. It is the same standard as it was when it first opened. Brilliant .

Overall, the four of us were extremely satisfied with our meal and, dining experience as a whole.

A group of local customers both business and social turned up at 2130 and were turned down for table service We are your lifeblood Why would you do that when takeaway was available??

I chose this restaurant out of quite a few available in Elgin. The service was efficient but not particularly friendly. The menu was very varied with a number of specialities listed I was able to choose a meal I’d never tried before. Sadly I can’t recall it’s unusual title. Sorry! However everywhere was clean and despite being quite busy service was very quick. The naans were huge and the portion size was excellent. I was unable to eat all my meal but this didn’t reflect on the quality.

Love the buffet here, always a wide selection on offer and it's always hot and fresh Booking is essential though

Visited here after being away for 20odd yrs. the service was brilliant. The young lads knee their stuff and offered advice on what to have. They noticed stuff and were always on the move and serving. The ambience was great and the place was busy. The food was excellent with a freshness and the fusion of the spices and the freshly cooked chicken were the highlight. Overall loved it and wasn't disappointed and the menu was wide ranging.

This place use to be good for Indian cuisine but not anymore. service was great but food was blind no test at all, good value for buffet lots of curry and starters what point if you don't find any flavour in Indian so I'm sorry I can't give you more then 2 star

Visit here every time I'm up on business. Never fails to impress. Friendly polite staff but more importantly, excellent food every time. Wide choice of dishes and accompaniments, something to suit all tastes. If you're not going early you'll needs to book,it gets busy...always a good sign!

Torn on this review....4 if us visited here. 3 ordered different curries and 1 ordered fish and chips. I know what your thinking 'why order fish & chips at an Indian'. But due to being outnumbered and not liking Idian food, you have to go with the majority. Anyway, the staff were brilliant, very helpful. The curries were very good. However, the fish & chips was shocking.

Read the reviews this is suppose to be morays number1 indian restaurant well if it is id hate to taste the worst,went for a takeaway when we got home part of the order was wrong the chicken jalfrezie was bland the garlic bread had brown slimey stuff on it which made the bread sopping wet just went straight into bin,i think they need to send their cooks to the ashoka in glasgow to learn how to cook indian cuisine,do yourself a favour save your money go to marks n spencer and buy yourself an indian meal deal much better.they only got one point as the premises seem clean and staff were polite.

We love Indian/Pakistani food so specifically chose this place. As soon as we looked at the menu we should have left. The starters resembled a typical Indian/Pakistani but the mains were incomprehensible. We just hoped the dishes had a regional history new to us. Very few recognisable dish names and descriptions. We ordered two lamb dishes with strange names, one claiming to be ginger based, the other coriander based. Neither had one whole spice in evidence Both had mushrooms and no other veg except onion. One which claimed to have a bhoona base,reminded us of a cheap jar of Italian arrabiata sauce but with less flavour. Truly inedible as tomatoes were not expected in such quantity. The other had no fresh chillies or spices in sight but clearly had alot of chilli powder or similar chucked in. The lamb was chewy and had clearly not been cooked in either sauce. Neither dish was really edible. The naan was okay but we suspect bought in. The rice came on one of the dinner plates despite us saying we would share rice and bread. Surely a restaurant can find a separate dish for rice? The waiting staff were very smart and professional. The environment was very pleasant. Sadly, if you truly like real Indian food find another restaurant. It was also expensive whether the food was edible or not.

I visited tonight, booked on a recommendation. I normally do not like to go out and eat because I'm so particular, however, this place is utterly delicious. We had the buffet and it was fresh, hot, and the flavors were so much more than the run of the mill. I was impressed, service was fantastic, all the staff were impeccably dressed, friendly, and not intrusive. I will definitely recommend you, and be back sharpish!!

We had booked a table well in advance for Friday evening, but due to heavy traffic driving up from Aberdeen we had to phone a couple of times to let them know we would be delayed. That was no problem, and we were warmly greeted when we eventually arrived. The restaurant was very busy with festive diners, however service was great and speedy! We asked for recommendations and our waiter was very helpful. We shared an onion bhaji, which came with a delicious sauce and a garlic prawn & mushroom puri - both very nice! And then we had the Murgh Khan puri and the Chicken Tikka Lashkara for mains with egg rice and an onion& garlic nan. The curries were medium and medium hot and quite different but both very tasty! The only negative I would say was that the serving of rice was on the small side, however the nan was huge, so altogether between the two of us, it was plenty! I have to apologize for not leaving a tip, but we had arrived from Norway and had not been to a cash machine so we had no British cash and it wasn’t possible to add a tip on the card. So sorry about that! We will tip generously on our next visit!

Dinner here is a lovely experience. Getting a wee bit too busy for comfort due to the season but that is to be expected of such a good place with great food

I visited this restaurant on the recommendation of a local hotelier. He wasn’t wrong! The food was fabulous and the service was exceptional. They have a very large menu, so I asked for a recommendation. The waiter was more than happy to sit down with me and go through my likes and dislikes (there are no dislikes!) and have the chef produce something bespoke. Wonderful!

You cannot beat the service and food of this restaurant. Opened in the late 80’s but still the best.

Cautious eater here enjoying a few days with a Scottish friend in his home town. Friday night is end of week, went here with work colleagues of his for a regular curry. It was busy as his usual place was closed for a week undergoing building work. Five of us there. I passed on the starter and no fish for Bry so made do with onion bargii. I had lamb tikka targii which was a new on for me but a nice 'thick' curry on the medium hot side. Mango Lassi was essential, small or large sir? This was a pleasant surprise, I was served a latte coffee in one Indian. Staff very good 2 pilau rice for our table was no problem. After the food was bought they quickly removed the serving plates. Well the five of us were on a bay of 4. The menu has chicken whatever but generally a lamb option was available. I know young things obsess about chicken but most Indians layout the menu as X with chicken or lamb. This cautious eater was worried for a while. We accidentally got pakora Nann but I was stuffed! Friends liked their meals too.

The food, the service the atmosphere all excellent. I was visiting from Canada with friends who had said this was the place to go. Wow the freshness and it comes piping hot. Got to meet the owners son who helps run the business. He was lovely. He is carrying on the family business with his father that started 32 years ago.

Visited the Qismat for dinner on my birthday Thursday past, very disappointing, the chicken was extremely dry and the dish was altogether very bland, not good value for money given the price point. I eat at Indian restaurants all over the UK but have to say I won't be back at the Qismat.

Have eaten here many times whilst travelling through and it has never disappointed. The chicken madras which is delicious is at the top end of my heat tolerance.....and I like a hot curry! Always pleasant efficient service too.

I love visiting the Qismat, the food is always amazing and fantastic quality, lots of curries to choose from. Always such a treat. Recently tried the buffet night on Monday, I will be back. My group of 4 loved it, very busy so definitely book but so worth it! The choices are immense, something for everyone. The starter selection is very good too, thoroughly enjoyed and will be back.

3 of us had 3 different curry's two nights on the bounce and could not fault any of it the curry's have amazing flavours and the sides and starters are out of this world if you don't visit this place when your in elgin your missing out definitely a must

Have eaten here a few times and always enjoyed it. Not a big fan of buffets but even on buffet nights they can still get you meals off the main menu. Got a take out this time, lamb buryanni and plain nan. Really tasty. Staff are always friendly and this time was no exception, will be back soon.

Nachdem unser Hotel leider kein eigenes Restaurant hatte, sind wir in der Innenstadt auf dieses Lokal gestoßen - und waren sehr zufrieden mit der Wahl. Die Speisekarte ist so umfangreich, dass man sich kaum entscheiden konnte! Es war sehr lecker, ausreichende Portionen, freundliche Bedienung, die auch auf die Schärfe des ausgewählten Gerichtes hinwies (wobei hier "scharf" für unseren geschmack durchaus angenehm erträglich war und nicht den Eigengeschmack des Gerichtes überdeckt hat). Preis angemessen.

Had friends visiting in lossie. All of us used to Indian cuisine for over 35 years. Thought we would try a change of place.

The last time we ate here, I enjoyed the flavours and variety of the dishes presented. This time, a "buffet night", there was plenty of variety, but a distinct lack of any discernible taste. I suspect there was also the absence of a chef, but if there was one, this was not his best night. The buffet should be an opportunity to showcase the cooking and make you want to return. This tired proposition is the reverse.

Had a wonderful meal at Qismat having visited Elgin for 4 days. And we had 2 days there eating! Food was hot, fresh, quick and so tasty!! Service was very good - attentive and so polite! Do visit if you are in Elgin, you won't regret it.

The Qismat was recommended to us by a regular user. We had to wait a long time for our food, but it was busy, so this did not bother us too much. My curry was good but did not merit the price, which was £10.25. My rice was brought out already dished up on a plate, which I thought unusual. I was going to award 4 or 5 stars because of the friendly staff and good service, but 2 things prompted me to only award 3. Firstly, my friend wanted a coffee after the meal, but they only had instant; no coffee machine is quite unbelievable in this day and age. Also, the toilets were in a bit of a state. It was OK but I wouldn't go back.

This was our 2nd visit but won't be back, it wasn't great the first time but we gave them the benefit of the doubt in thinking we just ordered the wrong curry, we both had different curries and both were very bland.

After hearing and seeing the good reviews on qismat, my friends and I had a visit to the qismat. It’s a hidden little gem within the heart of high Street of Elgin. As soon as we entered the restaurant there’s many trophies and awards on the wall ahead, some of the awards go back 30 years which shows that this restaurant is well established. The staff was very welcoming while they took us to a table. Looks like a family run business and it seemed very busy while we were there.

Consider myself quite knowledgable about curries as have eaten them all over the world. Decided to have the mon night buffet. This restaurant was good but not excellent or very good so that came as a disappointment. The starters were excellent and varied with not a hint of gristle in the chicken - I thought spot on - in for a treat with the curries. There was over 10 on offer. I tried the both lamb ones and was quite disapointed the lamb was not succulent and melt in the mouth. instead it was rather tough. You can get exceptional lamb in

Ordered a carry out from here as trip advisor reviews show it as No 1 Indian in Elgin. Can honestly say it was one of the most tasteless/flavourless Indian meals I’ve ever had. Surely there must be better in Elgin, would have been better getting an Asda carryout. Seriously disappointed.

This place hasn’t changed since I was last here. When busy it feels all a bit cramped. Service was good. Menu was a bit long winded and drinks menu didn’t contain all options that were available as we found out when paying the bill at the bar. Food was good but to be honest after reading some reviews I expected a bit more. Far from the best Indian I have ever had.

I stopped in while tromping about Elgin, and had a delicious and flavorful meal. The staff was friendly and the food was nicely spiced.

I had dinner with two friends and we were all impressed with the food and the service. It was early evening and it wasn't busy but as the evening progressed the restaurant filled. Our food was served quickly and it was really nice. I think the restaurant could do with an upgrade but we were happy with what we had and would go back.

A cosy restaurant with lots of customers but I was very disappointed with the quality of the food, especially after reading all the positive reviews. Maybe they were having an off night but it was the worst Indian meal I’ve had in a long time. The poppadoms were burnt, they ran out of boiled rice and the replacement pilau was an overcooked, soggy mess dumped on the plate instead of in a seperate dish, the chef’s special dish turned out to be a sickly chicken patia with too much sugar and very tough chicken and the cauliflower side dish was crunchy and coated in some kind of tomato sauce with very few spices. Frankly, both dishes suggested tomato ketchup to me. On the plus side, the service was very good; the waiters were really friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about special diets. But I won’t be going back. No matter how many people say it’s great!

If this is 'the best Indian in Elgin', I dread to think what the others are like!

Visited here for a business lunch with my wife. As a non meat eater there are good choices here. Hard to believe I can get a 3 course meal for under a fiver ie starter, main course with rice finished with ice cream. Service and staff brilliant and surroundings plush with clean toilets. Best Indian restaurant for miles around

Wonderful food what more can anyone want? Always a pleasure to go here. Sometimes it’s best to check the availability as it’s a very popular restaurant.

I opted for the chicken tikka Chasni garlic nan and chips. Chicken tikka Chasni is one my favourite dishes and the Akash in Elgin make a very tasty thick creamy Chasni. The Quismat Chasni however was a huge letdown. It simply had no flavour, a crime for any Indian dish, and it was also far too runny. It was not its usual red colour either, it was almost pink. Very disappointing. I found the garlic nan a bit too strong on the garlic front but it was otherwise fine, as were the chips and popodoms. The popodoms didn't come with any dips.

Had a lovely lunch here agai,last week. Great welcome from staff,as usual. The pakora starters are lovely and spicy, and the range of curries are excellent,something for everyone's palate. We love the Pashwari nan. Well worth a visit,enjoy.

We came here for the buffet as a few people had recommended it. The place is small but the food of fab. Great selection and everything tasted lovely. The staff were very nice and quick at clearing plates and replenishing drinks. We booked a table as we heard it was busy for the buffet on a Monday and it was full when we went.

Have been a customer of this place for many years and it has consistently produced great food and provided quick and cheery service. The menu is vast with some unusual dishes you won’t see in other curry houses, the one with gin and cashews is probably my favourite!

We eat here regularly, one of the best Indian Restaurants we have eaten in. The quality of the food is always excellent as is the service.

This was my first visit to the Qismat for some time and I am pleased to say nothing has changed. The restaurant was immaculately laid out, the extensive menu catered for every taste, service was first class, as always, under the personal supervision of the proprietor Mr Ali and finally the food was excellent

It’s been a while since we last visited the Qismat and like all visits we thoroughly enjoyed the Service and Food we received in this clean and well managed Restaurant.

Had a great family meal here for celebration. Very good service and good choice of food. My daughter has requested a return visit for her birthday next month.

Visited with 3 generations of our family for birthday celebrations. Monday night buffet was wonderful and we look forward to returning to either a buffet or menu evening.
