Pulse in Cardiff

Got kicked out having a conversation with a friend even though they served me and my friend a plenty of drinks. We were happily drinking in the bar before being asked to leave. Seemed bizarre to us both

Overcharged my friend at the door by double, when he realised 20 minutes later the girl claimed not to remember us (the place was dead at this point, so I doubt it) so he must have asked for the longer stay option (we all came in at the same time and asked for the same) we were told there was nothing they could do and to deal with it

Asked the owner and a bouncer if they could wait two minutes whilst i figured out if one of the housekeys that was handed in was my friends and they were highly aggressive and threatening to attack me, dont worry will be going to the police with evidence

If you want sticky floors, pretentious bar staff and flaky security then head here for your watered down, overpriced drinks in flimsy cup. Even If you can begin tolerate the awful repetitive music and the stale stench of the place it is half decent although the venue lacks character or charm behind its ever changing facade. It’s alright for a one hit wonder but in terms of contribution to the “community” they offer nothing short of a pebble in the ocean.

Great place for music and drinks, and the bouncers are pretty friendly, but the staff service is pretty awful and always moody towards their customers also people take inside the place as I got offered it.

Will not be coming here again. Getting assaulted and having my glasses and property stolen and only offered to be returned while on the phone to the police is unacceptable. The security staff are unprofessional and should all go. I will be pressing charges… I should also add. They owe me a new pair of glasses

Paid for me and my party of 8 to go in (at £9 a head)to be told none of us can come in and no refund would be given, stamped our hands took our money ruined the night of my birthday as they where swearing and disrespecting me as I left, and I’ve got video of security and “stamp” girl being completely rude and disrespectful to a customer who has already paid but been turned away after, scammers I will be taking this further

Me and my friend try to come inside and security men said straight away NO, they are totally rasist because they they didn't want to let many people in, especially black people and who they don't like the way they look. They event CAN’T explain why.. just said “no because no” …

got stamped the colour stamp was a pinky colour. i have a darker skin tone than everyone else and my stamp wasn’t as visible as everyone else’s however you could still see the stamp and knew i had already been stamped. The bouncers were having none of it and we had to pay again for my entry even though we had paid already. it was clearly stamped but didn’t show up on my skin colour. very upset as i come here often.

lost a phone and wallet here last weekend, have tried calling, emailing and using the lost property sections of their sites but have had no response at all. went to the club tonight to query about getting my phone back and was rudely dismissed and shooed away by staff. i just want my stuff back or to be told if it is or isn’t there (my phone certainly is)

The actual inside is great but the door staff are some of the worst I have encountered. I was brutally assaulted for wanting to get back in because my phone was broken and I needed to find my friend. Staff pushed me towards a wall and I cracked my head, blood everywhere. According to a witness, the bouncer just walked away like nothing had happened. It's lucky there were so many nice pedestrians around to help me or I would've been in a bad situation. I spent the night in A&E and am continuing to have bad headaches.

Incredible atmosphere and so much better music than the the average club such a safe place

I didn't appreciate the door staff accusing me of starting a fight with my best friend and giving me a final warning when I've only been to the been to the venue ONCE until close, so it was very degrading being told I had been kicked out when I was not. Additionally I was given no reason, evidence or proof to why I had a final warning, so unless you actually have evidence don't point fingers at random people... That's just unprofessional as a business and in that case, no wonder your venue has 3 stars... Reading past reviews I've seen alot of people have problems with the door staff... so as a suggestion in the future please hire more professional door staff or take a photo of the offending people, or not to jump to conclusions so you don't mix up it up with other people and say the wrong thing! This has really affected me as a gay person who felt safe in Pulse during the one night I was there.

This club appears to own the pavement outside. Door staff refuse to let people walk past to the rail station in the evening even if there is no queue. I did not appreciate having to backtrack, walk round the block and nearly miss my train. Have a bit of sense ffs.

Great place for friends. Ambience was as expected for a nightclub...music was good too... Not sure what the negative reviews on here are about, the doorstaff were lovely to me and my friends and appeared to take great care of guests who were within the venue. The best club currently in Cardiff in my opinion.

Awful pride experience. Paid £10 entry, got stamped, and asked could we come back and skip the queue. We were told yes by staff. Went to the partner venue across the road, The Kings, paid another £10, came back and were told we had to queue again. This was despite other people with stamps being let in depending if staff knew them or not. When I politely raised with security that this was unfair I was told to be quiet or I won’t be allowed in.

Bouncers need to be humbled. Overweight creeps that refuse certain ethnicities & groups of people. Everytime I’ve been they’ve refused myself or some mates in so we can’t all enjoy the night together. Dreadful club.

This is not a gay bar. It used to be a gay bar. It is not no longer. Myself and some friends were refused entry even though we were all gay and told by the door staff that even though we were gay does not guarantee us entry which flies in the face of everything a gay bar is supposed to be. I guess thats what happens when you hire heterosexual door staff for what is supposedly a gay venue. I’m not the only one who has experience shocking treatment by door staff as the first comment on trip advisor complains about the same thing. It is no surprise to me why Pulse though for some reason has loads of 5 star reviews when it's reputation in cardiff in reality is abysmal. If you are gay and are let into this venue don’t be surprised to see it filled with young straight men preying on young women. It is not a safe place.

Took money from My granddaughter who went for her first ever night out with her carer and friends she is a disabled power chair user. Door staff refused her ID she is 19 years old. They were refused their money back back. When she wasn't allowed in

Music is far too loud. I had to change rooms in the leonardo hotel because it was pounding trash music until 3am on a Tuesday night.

This was my favourite nightclub in Cardiff, and yet after giving them my money and business, I get kicked out for coughing. Apparently I ‘spat on the bar’ even though I only coughed a couple of times with my hand over my mouth, and politely asked for ‘a glass of water please’. The bar tender reported me to security for something I didn’t do. I wasn’t even drunk, I’m writing this straight after the incident occurred. These people are on a power trip, kicking people out for no reason. I wouldn’t recommend, very bad customer service EDIT they made it worse, I offered for people to step in front of me at the bar as they had already stepped in front, shouted so they could heard and got kicked out for being ‘aggressive’. I constantly get called this for no reason. The emotional stress I’ve endured from going to this place is not worth it. Rude and physically aggressive security. I definitely won’t be going back

Discrimination at its finest. Certain people are only allowed in. When asked to elaborate apparently they don't have to because it's private land. So much for supporting and LGBDQ community. Absolutely disgusting instructions from the owner (which was what the door staff had told me). I will be taking the matters further for discrimination. I wasn't drunk (I don't drink) was threatened just for asking why. The establishment doesn't really support what it is supposed to stand for.

Great music,cheap drinks and most important people are behaving well. I would highly recommend if you want to party till morning.

Spent a few nights here after pre-drinks in Kings just opposite great club great music and great entertainment the drag act on Wednesday amazing and funny wish I had caught her name saw 2 of her shows if in Cardiff you have to have a night in pulse the staff and locals are so nice and welcoming they will make sure you have a great time and a special shout out to Nicole thankyou we will miss you x

Appalling security team! On a quite a few occasions I have been refused entry for "being too drunk" even though I've been completely sober for work purposes (being on call). If you ever question their decision the security team get aggressive and physical. Looking back at other reviews it seems this is a common theme. Sort it out!

Am usually a frequent visitor to pulse/kings as I’ve always enjoyed it but not anymore due to abusive and intimidating management/ door staff a few of my friends have had similar issues with management which never seems to get resolved it’s the same with the kings bar staff are lovely in both venues but having someone walking around pretending to be the big I am above everyone is not the image that will get customers which you need for such a small gay establishment. Also was in a small group on the weekend One of my friends had a sports top on on with a pair of jeans and shoes and was refused entry No where does it state a pacific dress code

Attempted to visit with a group of fellow LGBTQ+ friends after Wales' famous victory to qualify for world cup for first time in 64 years. Unfortunately barred from going in due to wearing Welsh shirts. When attempting to politely question this policy, we were met with a smirk, and refusals to provide any reasoning whatsoever. Made me feel inferior. I've heard awful stories of their approach to the Welsh language, thanks for the awful experience, sack your manager and change your policy. Ps. It wasn't a no sport shirts policy because they let in a friend in a Lions rugby top 2 minutes before us.

This place needs to train it’s door staff .my wife was checking her phone she was not taking pictures she showed them her phone to prove it .but 2 of them grabbed her by the arms and dragged her out and also threw her to the floor.I notice some other reviews you’ve received have mentioned that your doorstaff are very rude and ameteur

Such a shame......what a good night it was until the end....when after the host singing there was a person known to them (either employee or other) then it became about them and not the audience brought the mood right down to the point people started leaving or not joining in....

Bar staff are lovely. Terrible customer service from the door staff. Wanting to hand in lost property of a friend who had already left, so that they could retrieve it. Girl on the door could not care less - very unhelpful as was security. Despite being on crutches for an injury told they couldn’t take it, I would have to go downstairs - with limited mobility due to crutches - to hand it in. Asked if they could take it, looked at me as if I was dirt on their shoe. No alternative offered. No helpful suggestion. Despite being sat in a booth where there was clearly space for it until someone could take it down. No explanation just a stinking attitude. Disgusting customer service. And no, I am not intoxicated.

Overpriced! I paid £11 for two cokes (no alcohol). and a single vodka lemonade. The sizes were half of that at other places. Atmosphere was dead as well.

I was spiked last night, in no way am I saying that it's the fault of the club, I've been there quite a few times and always had an amazing night. Just wanted to post a thank you to the awesome security that looked after me, I'm so glad they took the time to look after me and make sure I got home safe! xxx

Dissapointed, the bouncers refused me and my friends to let go in but let in the other group. Sadly, we came to enjoy our night but refused us to let in but thankfully other clubs welcomed us heartily. Pls be polite to each everyone as we are from different cultures but at or inside the club or at the end of the day we come together as to enjoy/ stress out our hard life. The only reason i didn’t give it a 5 stars is because i fell down the stairs because it was slippy lmao. Disgusted to hear that this establishment apparently declined entry to people for speaking Welsh in Wales. That would be illegal and a bit of a PR disaster. Hopefully it was some type of misunderstanding. Otherwise, shocking and upsetting. We are a country with two wonderful languages and the type of behaviour reported has no place in our society.

Hire better bouncers, or change your policies. To refuse someone entry for speaking Welsh in WALES is not only illegal, it's moronic. Are you seriously going to insult the people of Wales while being in it? Save yourself the trouble, stay away from this anti-Welsh venue.

Came here on Saturday the 13th. The Bouncer firstly accused my friend of being on drugs when he wasn’t at all. He asked us where we had been, we told him truthfully and he claimed not to know where we were talking about. He then refused my friends paper covid passport demanding an electronic version despite explaining his phone was out of battery. My other friend then tried to argue his case and he refused us entry despite saying nothing offensive. But no you should definitely come here if you want bouncers who are on a massive power trip and make pre conceptions of people before they’ve walked through the door. Wouldn’t mind but we were practically sober since it was so hard to get in anywhere. A group of girls waltzed straight in without having to show any covid passport which I think just about sums the place up. Supervisor was about as much use as a chocolate teapot as well. Won’t be coming back in a hurry and would like to speak to management to discuss the threats we received. Look forward to hearing from you.

Disappointed is an understatement. A group of friends and I was told we couldn't enter due to being too drunk, which we weren't and was unable to enter another club (Kings) due to door staff communicating via radio and using the same excuse of being excessively intoxicated.

First time in Pulse Cardiff got smashed by the Drag Queen but walking in on their act will always get that reaction, the place was clean plentiful bar. The act was fantastic even if it kept going off track made us laugh and made our night even more enjoyable. Staff were freindly and a shout out to the bouncer she dealt with a situation in a calm and friendly way, whiched wa good to see.

Lovely place. Really felt comfortable and had a brilliant time. Only have been on the first entrance floor so am excited to discover the whole floor plan. The music was great tho and the atmosphere was fab!

Hi, I didnt mind being told we weren't allowed in, thats more than welcome as it's their job as bouncers. But, upon asking why we weren't allowed in, we didn't expect to be threatened with being beat up (the same as another man who got aggressively thrown to the floor - to the point where two of us had to wait for police to complain and will be taking it further tomorrow because of this. He bragged about saying out complaint won't go anywhere because you guys apparently get so many complaints, according to him anyway. Now, I dont know if this is true but if it is, you need to sort yourself out. We asked a staff number and he wouldn't give us anything other than 007. That's funny, especially with the new film coming out, almost as if his job allows him the comfort to do whatever he wants and allows him to lie. He even bragged about how audio isn't recorded so he can do whatever. I dont know if this is true but if it is, whats wrong with you?? He can do whatever he wants because we weren't recording audio. I've got some video of this man. He's horrid, he threatened me because I wanted to complain, am I ever safe there again?? Can I get in without him ever targeting me if he recognises me? In light of recent events with the police, now we can't trust our bouncers anymore without being threatened, and now also are told if a lone officer arrests you - you should run. Great, an abusive bouncer is fantastic for you! You must be very proud of your staff, and by that I mean you must be ashamed and disgusted. You employ this man to do what he does and allow him the ability to get away with anything to the point of bragging because all a camera will show is him squaring up to me with no audio to confirm what I'm saying. All I tried asking, for context for yourself, was what does "too drunk" mean, to which the staff replied its up to the staff on the door which is more than fair enough, threats however are not. I'll make sure from now on any student I know will never step foot in this building as how can I expect anybody I know to feel safe when YOUR STAFF are the ones threatening people for literally asking "thats fair enough, but what is "too drunk?", this is okay to ask at least right? Its just a question so we don't know what to mess up next time. A threat though? Unreal, is this how you are happy to operate?? He wouldn't give us a contact number and laughed at the possibility of us complaining. Clearly he feels untouchable for a reason. Hopefully you guys improve, everyone else working was fair - there was a woman by the door and she calmly explained which is fair, we just wanted the man who threatened me to answer for himself without smiling like a grinning monster who knows he can do whatever he wants and get away with it. Please give me a contact number to discuss this and this man is clearly verbally and physically abusive beyond his means, and I believe this is worth discussing. Still as filthy and dirty as it was before lockdown. I don’t feel comfortable using the toilets are they are disgusting beyond belief.

My girlfriend’s drink got spiked, luckily nothing happened as we noticed but when we showed the bar staff they did nothing, didn’t check the CCTV, not even an incident report.

Very rude staff. My party booking had been in Pulse for about an hour before I arrived there. I was later and arrived at 22:03 due to being stuck in traffic, and the rude boy at the door charged me £2 to get into a booking with my name on it, because I was 3mins late. Absolutely ridiculous! I had no money on me, so had to walk around to get money from my party. When I returned to the desk, they refused my money stating that it was “card only”, which is against the law as even though we are in a pandemic, cash is still legal tender. Very poor.

Nowhere does it say that they don't serve food anymore. We booked a table at 3pm for a birthday pub lunch and only when we managed to flag a server down were we told that they don't serve food anymore. Then once this happened, not one of the staff came to help amend the situation, no one apologised. The bar staff just stared at us as we walked out. The door person gave us an "oh... yeah, the kitchen's been closed for ages". As if we were supposed to somehow know this. Very disappointed in this service. My suggestion would be to add some sort of reminder on your website that you are currently not serving food like you used to. I feel like it would be common sense for a place that used to serve pub food to continue serving pub food when it has reopened. Exactly how am I supposed to know that 18 months ago you stopped serving food?

Would of given this place more stars but that "manager" "head of security" that now runs the place just makes everyone uncomfortable and intimidates people there. We were there as a couples group and was having a great time until he turned up and the whole atmosphere changed. We wasnt made to feel welcome anymore. If we didnt do as we were told then we were out. My advice to the owner would be is to GET RID. Absolute clown of a bloke

Someone acting like a manager told us we’re not allowed to enter with joggers for some reason, a place that serves the most rubbish drinks and alcohols (e.g. barefoot) on the market… ridiculous.

We came to pulse today and was taken to our table by a member of staff who was rude and was not wearing a mask bar staff lovely but come on we are in a pandemic and he should of wore his mask

Cold. Drunkenness. Not over friendly. Defiantly not my cup of tea. If you are younger and want to a social evening with drunken people it’s a place for you. We found it expensive for what it is.

Love it here but can get pricey on saturday night, good for an LGBT+ night out to meet new people and the first floor plays fun tunes. Staff have always been great and i've been going regularly for over 2 years.

Their breakfast offering of 2-4-1 was superb value and very tasty. Ample outdoor seating in the sun, but still you are away from the main buslte of Queen Street

Saturday 5/9/2020 I was taken ill outside Pulse & my carer showed my disability access card to the doorman asking if I could use their toilet facilities (this card is widely accepted by most business who are aware of Crohns & colitis & who help out in such a situation),. He refused to even look at it saying it was 'a private business, not a public toilet' and kept stating 'you wouldn't let someone use your toilet would you?' He wasn't masked up and came really close, insisting we moved away. When some young women turned up to queue and as we walked away he seemed to show off in front of them and shouted 'I would have let you in if you didn't have that attitude'. He relished intimidating us but fortunately the people I was with (ex NHS) managed to get me to the facilities at M&S. I am a disabled pensioner and certainly don't have an 'attitude problem'. This was an appalling case of discrimination which is being taken further.

On sat 22, august, myself and my partner attempted to in to pulse to spend some Quality time together for our anniversary, however we were refused entry by the door man who accused us of being intoxicated, we had just drove to Cardiff so was both sober , the door man then became very rude to us to the point where he become aggressive we felt intimidated and left to go to another gay bar Mary’s where we welcomed by friendly staff , on talking to other punters and staff around Cardiff I learned that this door man has a reputation for discriminating against people and being a bully , when he looked at me and saw I had heavy makeup on that’s when we were refused entry, I am upset and feel discriminated against not what I would expect at A gay Bar where we go to truly be ourselves, I’ve never had trouble at pulse before but they definitely need to sort out this prejudice bully on the door

I understand this brave new world with giving your details etc, but I was bemused that I had to leave once the 2hrs table allocation was up even though the outside seating area was empty. The staff was lovely, but the new manager (head of security) has changed the vibe completely

Great night out, not too busy. Entry fee is a bit steep, usually stops me from bothering to go when there are other clubs with free entry in Cardiff that cater to gay folk.

Expensive poor quality drinks and brought to you by a company that laid off all their staff as a result of COVID-19 rather than furloughing them.

Had some amazing nights out at pulse. Staff are amazing, very friendly and accommodating, all go above and beyond to ensure you recieve the best experience(Jenny). Food is amazing with a wide range for you to choose from (highly recommend a fish finger sandwich ). Entertainment is fantastic and all the acts are amazing!

We as a team visit pulse very Sunday ad they are our sponsor, amazing atmosphere, great music and some amazing people, the bar staff (jenny) are always welcoming and friendly and food is amazing, always look forward to a night out here

Came into pulse this morning for breakfast, I must say it was gorgeous best breakfast I’ve had,excellent service from Tasha and Sarah, very polite and welcoming. Nice to be greeted by the cook Tom, he’s highly amusing always up to make you feel welcome, would highly recommend this place for food and drinks.Looking forward to my next visit.

We visit pulse every week for lunch, never had a bad meal.. breakfast is amazing value and delicious! Staff (tasha and sarah) very friendly and welcoming. Would highly recommend pulse for lunch or even a quiet drink.

Breakfast was excellent. The sausages and bacon were tasty and good quality which is rare in most places selling English breakfast. The service was excellent. Beautiful Sasha and the rest of the team were excellent host. Prices exceptionally good.

Had breakfast in pulse today and we was served by Tasha she was really lovely and caring and made sure we was happy with our food and drinks food was lovely would recommended to go again thank you Tasha :)

Popped in for lunch before a night out in Cardiff, we were served by Tasha, she was very polite, helpful made us feel very welcome. So much so we came back for breakfast! Again served by Tasha along with Sarah, both very welcoming and attentive, a credit to the venue. Both meals were great and beyond good value for money.

Had the most amazing 20oz mixed grill. The meat was cooked to perfection and was absolutely delicious. There was so much on the plate it was unreal. My son had the BBQ chicken melt which was equally delicious. We followed this with fruit crumble and custard/ice cream and a coffee. Could not move after though lol. Would definitely recommend pulse for food. Absolutely fantastic and so, so well worth the money (very reasonable). Tashas cooking was just beautiful and Jenny the waitress couldn’t do enough to make us feel very welcome. Fantastic staff, fantastic food what more could you want. They had an extensive menu to choose from which suits all tastes. Can not wait to come back to Cardiff to try your all you can eat breakfasts as after my mixed grill you know I can pack it away lol. Came to Cardiff for 5finger death punch Concert, and was staying near by so me and friends thought we would try it... I must say I was really surprised by how cheap the place was. Really good quality and value for money, and been a group from we was surprised to see the Yorkshire pudding wrap on the menu, the all you can eat breakfast was a great way to start the following day ready for a 4 hour drive home. Big thanks to jenny who did try playing some 5fdp songs before the gig before the manager asked her to turn it off. It was a great surprise.

Vistited pulse on Saturday I must say staff are very friendly and helpful especially Natasha, she’s very bubbly and a joy to see working behind the bar, always smiling and willing to help if needed,

Went to pulse for food must say absolutely lovely along with the staff Tasha is so polite and helpful will definitely be going there again tom is a scream two full of life and energy lovely place to eat can’t wait for my next visit

Come to Cardiff quite often, always come here for breakfast, it’s the best one in Cardiff, freshly cooked food, friendly staff, Jenny has always been lovely, very attentive always seeing if we want more, would never go anywhere else, £5.00 all you can eat, excellent, keep up the great work xx

I visited pulse this week and had a really great time and the staff were really great to especially Natasha she is so friendly and helpful she made the visit very comfortable for myself and my friends it was our first time at pulse but would recommend to other friends hopefully they will pick a day when Natasha is working
