Prezzo in York

I’ve been here before for lunch and had pizza which was always excellent. Nice base and very juicy. Came in the evening this time and the food was excellent. The char grilled burger was excellent. Tasted like it should and didn’t come in a huge tower which you then spend all night deconstructing. The lasagne was also delicious. Service quick and polite. Beer was icy cold. Coffees were nice and strong. Nothing to fault it and excellent value. Having been to a Michelin star owners restaurant a few weeks ago and paid through the nose this was different class food. We will be back.

We had a table booked for 5.30PM on Saturday which was part of my birthday treat (a day out in York which included a trip to the theatre opposite). When we arrived, we were informed that there were only two chefs and a trainee on duty. Consequently, there could be a 30-minute wait for food. As 30 minutes didn’t seem too bad (and we didn’t stand much chance of getting in anywhere else at that time) we decided it wouldn’t be an issue. We ordered starters and main courses just as another couple arrived and sat at the next table. After about 25 minutes the other couples starter arrived and then ours. Didn’t think anything of it at the time. Sadly, our starter was lukewarm at best. Our server appeared and asked us if everything was ok. She timed it beautifully to ensure that we both had our mouths full and turned away without a second glance! Then we waited and waited. A total of 1 hour and 40 minutes to be precise. No apology or explanation. More annoyingly the couple at the next table who had arrived after us were halfway through their main course! Fortunately, we had been given some Prezzo vouchers for Xmas and my wife is entitled to Blue Light discount, so we didn’t pay the full price (about £60.00). If we had then I may have complained there and then but we were past caring by then. To finish off. Prezzo never responds to TripAdvisor reviews, so I have also completed their own on-line survey. Be interested to see if they bother about that!

Ate here on our family trip to York. Dropped in on the Sunday but they were busy so booked for the Monday. My daughter-in-law has a severe coeliac intolerance, Tobias really put her mind at rest. Not only was the food amazing, the service was wonderful. Tobias even went as far as personally seeing that her food was not at risk of cross contamination. Tough to find service like this, Tobias went above and beyond, he really made us feel valued! Four wonderful starters and mains. Highly recommend.

Lovely waitresses - friendly, attentive, really did their best for us. They were excellent. The decor is modern and clean. BUT the food is not good. The pork and fennel pasta dish was bland and heavy. The foccacia with chicken was stale and inedible. Lovely waitress consulted the 'chef' - aka the person who warms up the pre-prepared sandwiches that are trucked in. The bread was clearly at least two days old - tough and dry - but we were told that all the others had arrived 'in the same batch' so there was no point them serving us another one. I was shocked, to be honest. I hadn't realised that almost nothing is prepared fresh - it's shipped in from elsewhere and just warmed up in the kitchen. The two waitresses who helped us were lovely - they clearly were embarrassed and trying to help. But the bottom line is this is bad food. Avoid.

I've eaten at many Prezzo restaurants over the years. I think they're a great, fairly inexpensive & casual Italian dining chain. I'm not blown away very often but nor do I ever leave one of their restaurants disappointed. The food and service are decent and sometimes that's all we want. Unfortunately on this particular occasion at this restaurant (first time here) the service was incredibly slow and that greatly impacted our experience. I got the feeling that perhaps they were understaffed and if that is the case and it was not intentional (e.g through staff absence rather then from poor management) we have to take that into account. The waitress was very friendly and smiley (when we saw her). In terms of food it was a little sub-par for Prezzo. The Chicken Alfredo was very 'meh' and I felt a little disappointed that it was nowhere near its equivalent at Vapiano for example, nor was it even close to what I can do myself at home. A 2.5 out of 5 dish here really, when generally Prezzo dishes would probably average out around 3.5 to 4 if I was scoring all the ones I've had in the past. This might be how it is across the chain though, I don't know. The other dishes my family had were all fine with nothing significant to mention one way or the other.

My friend and I visitored Prezzo before a play at the theatre at The Grand Opera House in York. We left ourselves plenty of time before the play started which is just as well. The service at Prezzo was appalling. We waited at least 15 minutes before our order was taken and a further 20 minutes before the meal arrived. We got the impression that this was deliberate as most of the diners were theatre goers and I think the idea was we would buy more drinks while we waited. The meal was excellent when it did arrive but was spoilt by poor service.

Prezzo suffers like most chains in that it’s formula is average to start with. The food was ok but nothing special. Pizzas and pasta were standard and slightly overpriced when compared with independent Italian restaurants. The staff were busy but very courteous and efficient.

We'd booked in advance. No complaint about service. Food was delivered very quickly. Then we figured out why: it seemed to have been put in the microwave for too short a time. You can't make decent risotto in 5 minutes and they sure didn't. Spaghetti bolognese sauce was too little for the noodles, rather tasteless, and barely warm. We would rather have waited 40 minutes for great food than 5 minutes for bad food. Our displeasure was perhaps greater because we'd dined the night before at Enoteca at 5 Bridge Street; now that was a fine Italian restaurant!

Food delicious, staff excellent - really helpful and polite + would 100% come again and recommend to anyone - visited evening of 2.1.24

I could not fault the staff, they were very good. Then it comes to the food. On the whole pretty abysmal I ordered bass. This was supposed to come on a bed of Mediterranean roasted vegetables. What I got, was an overdone fillet,on top of mashed up tinned tomatoes, with the odd slice of pepper. My partner had what was supposed to be a chicken Caesar salad. This was in name only. As I said,I could not fault the staff, they were just caught in the middle. But there was certainly a problem in the kitchen. My partners problem was mentioned, and was sorted. I did eat mine, as every where was busy, and it was better than looking elsewhere in the rain.

We ordered two kids meals- pizza was okay but chicken burger was quite dry. The adults ordered two pasta meals which was tasty enough but it was served lukewarm. Service was incredibly, painfully slow. Had to chase up a couple of times- as kids were getting restless. Pudding took about 20mins to arrive which was a lifetime for a 5 year old!

I’m writing this review whilst waiting for my food!! So can’t possibly comment on the quality of the meal. The problem started from the moment we entered the restaurant for our booking which was made 6 weeks prior. We were told that our table would be in a ‘nice booth’ upstairs when we had specifically requested a table downstairs at booking. There has been zero effort from the management to rectify the issue (other than move us to an other table upstairs) or to attempt in any way to make it better. Add to this a 1hr plus wait for our mains (still waiting) and altogether we have had a terrible experience.

Absolutely freezing customer sat with coats on. Food was terrible, sent one meal back. Left as soon as possible. Manager needs to pick his feet up when he’s walking he slides around the restaurant it’s really annoying!

Glad we booked very busy near Christmas. Pleasant staff and nice menu. The starters came quickly, but then main courses took a while, and it took three attempts to get any water to be brought to the table. My crab spaghetti dish was OK but not particularly tasty. Arancinni starter was good

The reason for 3 stars is due to the length of time and table service. Waited a long time for drinks and then they were wrong. Waited over an hour for light starters - this was ok as we were not in a huge rush but might not be acceptable for everyone. Then waited ages for the main courses. This was annoying as we were really hungry by now. Food was very good when we got it. We were offered Parmesan and both said yes. More waiting but the waiter didn’t return. The takeaway delivery people were in and out a lot and I wonder if the takeaway service is prioritised over those in the restaurant. I also think simple table management is lacking. The young staff are very presentable, warm and friendly but we’re unsure of what was happening at each table. Twice we were asked if we wanted the bill - we hadn’t yet eaten! It is a shame that it isn’t better run because it’s in a great location and the restaurant is lovely inside. Seating not crammed and nice soft lighting. (Toilets not a great experience. No way of knowing if in use or not - have to push the doors to find out. Also very unhygienic - sanitary bins overflowing that the lid is open for all to see)

We stopped by here after a 4hr drive up from down South as a pit stop before checking in to our hotel for the weekend. We wished we hadn't. They have no lunch menu just the standard menu so for lunch it was an expensive stop. We should have looked at the menu before going in. Hubby opted for the 'new' saltimbocco. The portion is very small for the price and the sauce just tasted like white wine had been poured over the dish. The chicken, 2 breasts, was tough and not able to cut with a knife. We sent it back after 1 mouthful and it returned with 1 breast still not Tender but edible but long after I had finished my meal. I opted for the Chicken Alfredo Rigatoni pasta and while the portion size was better then hubby's I only had 2 small pieces of chicken in it. It definitely wasn't worth the money and tasted very bland. We were so disappointed with our visit and would not return.

Very clean and organised restaurant. Taken upstairs by a server who was still buttoning up her blouse and had an unwashed aroma about her. We went to a lovely table in the window and introduced to our server Josh. The menu was easy to read with excellent descriptions and calorific content which I like. Sadly the amount of food did not reflect the price we paid ! Very small portions per pound. They had run out of a popular white wine but Josh did recommend a good alternative. We were in a hurry at the end as we were due at theatre but we did ask for our Gourmey society membership card to scanned , only when we got to theatre did we realise it had not been discounted off our bill! Making this a lot less value for money! Josh did your company proud. He was polite, friendly and was knowledgeable. I’d struggle to recommend Prezzo purely on this lack of value for money.

Greeted warmly by staff and seated in a warm area which was welcoming coming in from the cold. The starter I wanted had white wine, the chef was kind enough to make the same starter without the wine, it was delicious, it was the king prawn and gnocchi. Overall our experience was really good with the food arriving on time and most definitely value for money. If you come to York, pay Prezzo a visit you will not be disappointed.

We were met by the friendly staff and shown to a nice table for 5 near the window. We were the first in the restaurant and it stayed quiet. Drinks and food served in good time and overall the food was very good. Pleasant clean dining area. Toilets down rather steep steps but a disabled toilet on the ground floor.

Great service, was welcomed with warm & lovely staff. Food was well priced with what we had. We will definitely be back when in york again

The food was ok but took a little time to arrive. The price for drinks was extortionate. £6.95 for half a pint of larger, nearly £14.00 a pint is just too much, I would normally have two or three pint’s with my meal but decided to have tap water on this occasion. We won’t be rushing back.

We had a delicious lunch today after visiting York Castle Museum. Friendly staff and great service. My own personal disappointment is that you no longer accept cash but I didn't let that spoil my day.

The pizza ok not great BUT the Malbac wine insipid ,lacklustre dont know how they dare serve it especially at that price . Had better Malbac from Aldi

We stopped late afternoon for something to eat. Service was good, food was nice but I feel overpriced for the pasta dish -chicken alfredo-which was a little skimpy on ingredients (mostly pasta very little chicken, tomato) and the peppers in the dish were raw? Not roasted . Overall ok but disappointing as this was a special occasion treat.

Arrived at 6:20 pm. Order taken quickly and starters arrived by around 6:50 pm. We were then waiting until 8 pm when we had to flag down our waiter to ask where our mains were. Waiter had not provided us with an update prior to this and was a shame we had to flag him down for an update. Mains then came out at about 8:05 pm after an hour of waiting, and alongside this we were given a free portion of olives, – this could have come out prior to our main course as by which point we were starving and just wanted to eat our mains and leave. No money was knocked off the bill for the inconvenience of having to wait for such a long time. However, after asking for money off we were able to get 20% off which we felt was fair for the long wait time. Waiter was very nice and tried to handle the situation as best he could however sadly it a disappointing experience at Prezzo. Such a shame as I’ve always enjoyed coming to Prezzo prior to this!

For a large, well respected chain of restaurants this particular Prezzo leaves a bit to be desired! The staff are friendly and our order was taken quickly. Unfortunately that's where the positive comments end. The starters arrived within about 20 minutes but the main course did not appear. We chased it with our waiter who said "your mains will be out in a minute". 25 minutes later I asked the manager if he could chase them up for us. He checked on the system, went to the kitchen and then said "they are now in the oven so should be about f5-10 minutes". I d They did then arrive about 10 minutes later so I would suspect they had not been started until the manager was made aware. The meals were fine but nothing amazing and not particularly warm however there was nothing "wrong" with it as such. No apology for the long delay, and no offer of a discount etc, which is disappointing, and my only regret is that we didn't decide to use one of the many independent restaurants in York city centre instead, but wanted to stick with something we knew (well, thought we did !) Unfortunately, I checked the reviews after we had ordered as several reviewers have made the same comments as me.

This was our first experience at Prezzo, and it was somewhat underwhelming. While the atmosphere was pleasant and the menu options were diverse, the service proved to be lacking. It took around 15 minutes for our order to be taken and another 20 minutes before our food arrived. Although the pizza was still warm, it wasn’t exactly hot. The dough also was incredibly stretched, making it very thin with a hole in the middle. Despite all this, we still ordered a dessert and a second drink, but there were issues in this as well. The wrong dessert was brought to us, and the extra drink we ordered was forgotten entirely. The staff admitted he’d forgotten to make the drink and promptly removed it from the bill, along with our earlier drink. I don’t know if this was a mistake on their part or some compensation, either way it was appreciated. Sadly I don’t think I’d go to a Prezzo again.
