Sunday lunch, prebooked, so they knew exactly what we all wanted to eat. We were on time, but the food was very bland and disappointing. Meat eaters told me it was tough, both pork and beef. The roast potatoes were leathery. Other veg over-cooked. Generous portions, but who wants a lot of unappetising food? Was it all pre-cooked and left to be warmed up? The Goats cheese salad (V) starter was OK. The puddings were also large and went down well. The dining room was empty apart from us, on a summer sunday, which we thought spoke volumes... The staff were great, friendly and helpful. So we chickened-out of saying anything at the time, as you do.

This is a typical drinkers pub, great for a pint and the front of house staff were really friendly but the dining room has seen better days. There were holes all over the ceiling, where lights were missing and it generally felt a bit tired. Our dinner was okay-ish. The kids burgers and chips looked reasonable if you like big portions and simple fare. The curry tasted OK but the sauce was too thin and it was served very simply with some plain rice and a tiny side of Daal. Overall, not so bad that I'd complain but I could have cooked a nicer meal at home. In my opinion, going out should be a treat and this disappointed. I'd go back for a drink but not the food.

We were staying close by, so decided to give this place a go. Called in and booked in advance for an evening meal for 4, three coeliacs in our party. They rose to the challenge very well and we had a lovely meal. Social distancing was observed which was great in these unusual times. Definitely recommend this place

We only spent one night this time, we will be returning as it is a lovely place. I had had a nasty accident at home that morning and they were lovely changing our booked table to one more comfortable for me. The food was delicious and not too expensive. The barman was great he kept the now required distance and wore a mask to take our order and deliver it. We had a lovely room with an enormous bathroom, all clean and tidy. Breakfast was very good and filing. The landlord served us and he wore a mask and once someone left the social distanced tables he cleaned it thoroughly before the next people arrived. All in all a highly recommend place to stay, we will definitely be going back.

Our friends suggested we meet here following their visit two days previously and in several ways it proved to be an enjoyable experience. The Portway is on the A438 about 10 miles west of Hereford; it has a large car park which is well maintained and access is easy. Dinner is served from 6.00 to 9.00 and the draught beer was my very favourites, The Rev James which is usually a good start! The 'landlord' or who I took to be the landlord whilst civil was not exactly warm and welcoming but this may be something to do with me asking for me to have my pint of beer 'topped up'. Not an unreasonable request? The pub is reasonably clean and whilst we were there several guests arrived who were apparently staying overnight. The main course food was good without being exceptional; I had the fish pie, two others the stir fry with beef. The ladies finished off with a superb cheesecake which we thoroughly recommend. PLEASEIGNORE THE HOTEL RATINGS AS WE DID NOT STAY THE NIGHT.

We stayed at the Inn whilst visiting family on a bed and breakfast basis the Inn uses local produce and is excellent very well cooked and presentation. The bar area is ambient and comfortable with a fabulous fireplace. Steeped in history we would definitely recommend a visit for a lunch or evening meal or like us a stopover at this quirky little Gem.

We were a party of 8. Made welcome but felt rushed owing to a warning that another party were due and speed was of the essence. The food was hardly commented on which is unusual save the gammon defeated the diner's knife and afterwards a couple of luke warm remarks were made. It was the end of the meal that caused the most attention as the waitress adopted the school dining room method of plate collection asking for them all to be passed down to her. Unfortunately eight plates do not balance unless the cutlery and leftovers are transferred to another plate. As this step was omitted one elderly diner received a plate in her lap. This caused us to recall that when additional drinks were required there was a long wait at the bar while the food cooled down so a word to the wise plan ahead so nothing is missing from the table before starting to eat as available staff are kept busy.

Dinner service started at 6.we arrivedat 5.30had a drink and ordered.happyily played games provided in the bar. Food arrived 18.20. Pretty sure we had left overs from lunch. Everything was so overcooked. We were told before we ordered that we could get children's versions of anything. Until we went to order! Seems relying on the technology available outweighs using common sense. We took a 2 yearold. He doesnt eat meat or much at all but enjoys veg. Just wanted veg and a Yorkshire. The only way around the till to order this was to order a adults roast Beef! Apparently theres no side veg and extra Yorkshire button.more like they just want to steal my money with technology excuses. The Yorkshire was like acold biscuit anyway so shouldn't of bothered. A waste of money and a waste of food. Shame.took us over anhour to findthis place. Girl behind the bar was friendly but we wanted a good Sunday roast not a chat. Website pics misleading!

Five people, four dishes and only one had a meal they enjoyed, Restaurant cold although very seasonal. Have been to the Portway many times but will not be rushing back. Undercooked belly port is horrid to look at never mind eat. Waitress needed to be taught how to do her job. Young, so probably untrained. Don't think any of us are over fussy but we were all disappointed.

We booked a table for our family to go to the Portway Inn for lunch. Upon arrival we ordered drinks, one of which was spilt all over the bar and all down my Nan (this is fair enough, happens to us all). The young gentleman who made the drink didn't apologize and left the young lady on the bar to clear it up. We were told the lemonade was flat BUT only AFTER we had ordered the drink and sat down at the table to drink it. Ordering the meals, two of my family members ordered the roast beef of which was really stringy. We werent offered steak knives and had to ask for them as it was difficult to cut. We normally love coming to this restaurant and haven't been for a while. Upon coming back, we felt we were terribly let down by the customer service and even furtherly shocked to have not been offered any discount whatsoever. We are not a family to complain whatsoever but we felt let down by our visit this weekend.

We popped in for lunch while on a day out in the area. The staff were friendly, and the food was lovely (I'll be copying the chicken salad with grapes, walnuts and a raspberry dressing at home!). From the outside the building is a little tired and we weren't sure it was open - but we were very glad we investigated, and found a warm welcome inside.

This is an excellent venue for lunch, and we regularly drop in en route to/from Hereford. There is sometimes a special meal for oldies like us, but generally we ignore it and go for the regular menu. It is quiet (compared to the cafeteria of Oakchurch, which is close by) and the service is good and unobtrusive. We have only eaten in the bar, which does accept dogs, and sometimes we take the dog in with us. It is frequented also by a few locals at lunch time, who are quite friendly and not at all rowdy.

I was visiting my Father in Warwickshire and he suggested we go here for dinner, I can just say I am grateful he did, it was just fantastic. Quite traditional interior, very friendly staff, a menu that leaves no choice left wanting (I am told the menu does change with specials and seasonal offerings) but it was tick box heaven for me. The food very generous in portions, well served, and all round good dinner out. Well worth a drop in is all I can say, you'll not be disappointed.

Chose the pub as they offer a 6-9pm sitting for dinner on a Sunday. A lot of choice but only offered one options for vegetarian. Luckily I like goats cheese so give for me. Was a tasty plateful of polenta vegetarian goats cheese parcels. Although lacked a vegetable accompaniment, which ended up paying extra for. Having said that, all very tasty and the meat eaters roast potion was ample. Puddings also delicious. Nice choice of desserts. Staff attentive and friendly also. Well worth a visit for home cooked food with local produce but would like to see maybe an additional vegetarian option with veg!

Staying at Mrs Higgs Lodge (also amazing) we wanted a meal out one evening. We were not disappointed. Locally sourced where possible the food was definitely more than just pub grub. The waitress was lovely - not intrusive but very pleasant with a good sense of humour. We ordered the rump of lamb with broad beans, fondant potato and peaches - it took a little while to arrive but I don't mind waiting for good food. It was presented very well and the lamb was melt in the mouth and cooked pink which is just to my taste. It looked excellent and tasted even better.

We came here several times and sat in the pub/bar area for snacks, drinks. Free wifi came in handy. Dined in the restaurant once and never came back. The food was good, but the service was slow. Seemed like we were forgotten back in the restaurant area. Not sure why; maybe it was just that waiter and that evening. Otherwise, service in the pub/bar area was great. We were there with our two children, 12 and 15 which was fine. Not sure I'd be comfortable with small children although there were high chairs.

A good place to stay in a quiet part of Herefordshire. Great welcome and up rickety stairs to a room with a floor that sloped. \All part of the charm of the place. Comfortable beds kettle and good en-suite made the stay good. The breakfast was varied and met with our slimming requirements. Very chatty staff both in the morning and evening. The restaurant meals are reasonably priced and presented well on the plate. The hake in particular was scrumptious. For a stay in the area close to the Welsh Border there can be nowhere better.

We were passing through the area and realised that places to get lunch might be few and far between. We saw this pub and weren't too sure, as it was being painted on the outside. I was a bit put off by seeing a sign saying 'lunch for under £5.', but we drove in and looked for some kind of menu. Nothing outside so we cautiously went inside and decided to chance it. I normally wouldn't go for the Seniors menu despite being eligible (just), but we went for the steak pie and the pork in cider, both of which were really nice and such good value, especially as we didn't want enormous helpings. Tea or coffee were included! I went for the rice pudding for dessert which was ok but I wished I'd had something off the normal menu. Service was pleasant and toilets spotlessly clean. We went on our way congratulating ourselves that we'd found such a reasonable pub serving good quality food.

Walk-in at 6.00 on a Saturday evening, as we happened to be in the area and lived the look of the menu. Nobody greeted us, but we asked the lady who appeared to be in charge whether they were serving food that evening. She rolled her eyes. The conversation then went as follows: Her: Have you booked? Us: no, I'm afraid we haven't. Her: Huh. (Rolls eyes again, goes over to the bookings list). It's very quiet, but I don't really want to do any more today. Us:... Her: I suppose I could do 7 o'clock... Us: Don't worry, bye! Her: Huh. No way were we going to give our business to somewhere with such a bad attitude. But it turned out well for us - we ended up at the Lal Bagh Bangladeshi restaurant down the road, and had possibly the best curry we've ever eaten!
